Writing Directions

CLB Level: 3/4 Method: 1. Vocabulary necessary for the activities should be pretaught: Go south, turn left, head north, go straight, landmarks, etc. 2. Using a map of Downtown Winnipeg, teacher whites out a few streets on the map. Looking at a map as a model, students have to write the streets that are missing. This will help the students get familiarized with the area. 3. Students make a list of the landmarks downtown and their location. 4. After finding and writing the missing streets and learning about landmarks, students practice as a whole group on how to give directions/on how to get from one street to another. As students give directions, the teacher writes them on the board. Students review the written instructions together. 5. Looking at the map of downtown Winnipeg, students write simple directions. Students might use landmarks if they remember. Teacher provides the map with a starting point (e.g.: point A) and a destination point (e.g.: point B) so students can do activity A. Activity B can be used as assessment. Follow Up: Students write directions on how to get home from school or from school to home. Students could make a list of the places they want to learn how to get to and practice giving directions. Debrief/Transfer: Students talk about what they learned in class and in which situations they would need to use those skills. Students could gage from 1 to 3 how useful this learning experience was for them: One being I would not use this again; Two being I might use it sometimes; and three being very helpful and Ill use this a lot.
