Introduction We offer nether pay, nor quarters, nor food; we offer only huger, thirst, forced, marches, battles,

and death (Garibaldi). In a world of wealth, poverty has always existed throughout history. Many dont see world hunger as a problem but its beyond that. Poverty has been increasing every year due to different reasons. Among the reasons almost 18 million people die each year, while some celebrate power and success. Millions of families fight every day to survive another day in this world. They didnt choose to be born in dirt, when the rest are showered in gold. Even knowing there is no one to blame for this global issue, there are people who can help prevent world hunger. Throughout the years many organizations have put their work together to decrease the number of hungry people, but do to the high number of causes it has made it difficult to overcome it. What are the causes of world poverty?

Poverty is the world where most humans live. There are many factors that contribute to world poverty, but most likely the main cause is due a low economy. Many are born poor, others become poor, and die poor with all the many factors its a challenge to prevent people from suffering world hunger. Millions live with hunger because they simply cannot afford to buy enough food, cannot afford nutritious foods, or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to grow enough food for their own. People do not only suffer because of hunger but also to make a living, health problems and not enough education.

Facts Almost half the world, which is over 3 billion people, lives on less than $2.50 a day. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. 640 million are without adequate shelter (1 in 3). 400 million have no access to safe water (1 in 5). 270 million have no access to health services (1 in 7). (Shah) Lack of education The opportunity of education is very low in some countries. Of 61 million children who arent going to school around the world, 95% live in developing countries (Cason). Due to the low economy education is very common in poor countries. Its

difficult for governments to afford public schools, especially in rare countries. Poor people often quit schooling in order to concentrate on making a minimal living. In addition, developing countries tend to have few employment opportunities, especially for women. People may see little reason to go to school. On the other hand those who have the opportunity to attend school dont always take advantage, which leads to fewer graduates and the chances of getting a decent job. Not enough jobs The world faces a serious job problem. There are around 200 million unemployed people in the world. In countries with high populations the percentage of unemployment is much higher, which points that millions of working-age people cannot find work and earn a decent income. Many people are over worked for what they get paid. Others arent able to find enough work or earn wages that are too low to support themselves. In order to help with these issue 600 million productive jobs most be created in the next decade to lower the number of families living below two dollars a day (Global Employment Trends). Over priced products Living expenses nowadays are more than what people earn yearly. People are hungry not only because the population is growing so fast that food is becoming limited, but because people cannot afford it (Dayen). Food may be tight, but it is international trade, economic policies and the

control of land that have led to poverty and hunger. Therefore families have less access to food not due to over population, but because everything cost more than what they have. Number of hungry people

Weather and Climate Change Natural disasters leave dramatic impact in cultivable lands. Between droughts, floods, and tropical storms, weather can be unpredictable and harsh. Although a natural disaster may strike quickly, long-term damage can be possible. In many developing countries, farmers depend on one small plot of land. If this land is destroyed by natural disaster, their source of food and living is washed away with it (Stoitz). Over population In many countries population growth is the reason why people are poor nowadays. Especially in developing countries the population growth has hit them hard. As the populations of countries rise, so does the demand for food. Its becoming

more difficult to match food production rates with population growth rates (Stoitz). Also, bigger families require more expenses due to health and clothing reasons. Raising a big family with such a low income is not enough to cover all the expenses that are required. Consequences of poverty The poorest people have less access to health, education, and other things. Mainly poor people catch diseases more often and dont have sufficient nutrition. The poorest are also often ignored by society and have little representation or voice in public and political debates, making it even harder to escape poverty. Lack of Water

children annually. The World Bank has estimated that by 2035, three billion people who currently live in severe-water-scarcity areas especially in Africa, the Middle East or South Asia - will have no access to safe water, period. (In-depth)

Global locations of 783 million people without access to safe water More than 40 percent of the global population is without access to safe water, most of the people live in subSaharan Africa. The graph below shows where11 percent of the world population is without the benefit of good water (Rose).

Who are the most affected? The lack of clean water is a daily issue in most poor countries. Almost 1.1 billion people in developing countries don t have access to water, and 2.6-billion lack basic sanitation. Every 15 seconds, a child dies of a preventable waterborne disease, amounting to 2 million There are many negative effects of hunger on a childs life, not only physical but also mental. To start with, almost 30,000 children die everyday, especially in Africa and India due to poverty, hunger, water, and poor health conditions (Love). Furthermore, every poor child is at a

greater risk for several negative outcomes such as poor academic achievement, school dropout, abuse, and neglect. This leads many to become homeless, have insufficient nutrition and no motivation to do something with their lives.

Health decisions are often ignored in these countries. In the 10 nations with the highest poverty rates, HIV prevalence is extremely high. Five of the eight countries for which data are available were in the top 25 (out of more than 200 countries) for HIV cases among people 15 to 49. These include Zimbabwe, which has the fifthhighest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate at 14.3%, and Swaziland, which has the highest recorded rate at 25.9%. In the United States the rate is just 0.78% (Mannino). What is being done?

Which countries are the most affected? Even knowing campaigns and programs are doing their best to improve their help, not every country is being benefited equally. Three countries dropped the rate of help from 2010. These three countries were Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Worlds Poorest Countries).

Although poverty is not an easy issue to deal with many organizations are working very hard to accomplish their goals of putting end to this issue. Each organization has a different deadline to achieve their goals to help with childrens health, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability, access to education, and the most important of all, ending hunger(Mannino). Also, many campaigns are linking between one another to have strong sources to combat poverty. World Bank

Figure 7 Becker

Jim Kim, president of World Bank, is willing to do what ever it takes to end world hunger. A World Bank study of 19 poor countries concluded that every 1% increase in national income per head translates into a 1.3% fall in extreme poverty (Becker). Kim admits that it will be extremely difficult but he hopes achieve his goal of ending world poverty by 2030. Also knowing that developing countries keep increasing, he counts on wealthy countries to contribute. Kim also hopes that the Development Committee, one of the other biggest organizations, joins the World Bank to accomplish their goals together. Whats being currently done? At the moment there have been a lot of donors for schoolbuilding projects, but longterm support is needed (Lucas). Between 1970 and 2010, school enrollment climbed from 55% to 70% of all primary and secondary schoolage children (Worlds Poorest Countries). Each year, billions of dollars of official and private development aid are spent on food aid, transportation infrastructure, insecticidetreated bed nets, and vaccine development for tropical diseases (Shah).

association, and government to participate. Birth rates cant keep escalating, especially in developing countries. Families should limit the number of children they have. Another helpful move, the governments could lower the taxes for the poor and provide full time jobs with better salaries. In addition, people can join organizations to do volunteering work to support the poor. Also, contribute financially by donating a dollar each day can really make a different. More donations of cloths and shoes can be very helpful for those who dont have much to wear or walk barefoot.

Conclusion In conclusion, even knowing poverty is often ignored, it is a very serious problem that has affected people for centuries. While the problem of how to end hunger and poverty in the world is complex, it is clear as water that it will take much longer then the expected time for everyone to have an equal life. Unfortunately, wealthy countries dont contribute enough to put an end to human suffering. If the rich were involved in helping more, than having power, the world would be in peace.

How can it be prevented? In order to prevent poverty it s necessary for every individual,
