TABLE TENNIS RULES

SECTION I: GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

A. PERSONAL AND TEAM CONDUCT

1. Participants are required to represent themselves and their respective schools with respect and
dignity.

2. Any team or individual involved in destructive or negative conduct at Post-Secondary Games 2009
events or venues, including hotels, will be ejected from the tournament at the discretion of the Advisory
Committee. Spirit Deposits may also be forfeited.

3. For a list of all on court violations leading to suspension or disqualification, please refer to the
Registration Package.

4. The Advisory Committee reserves the right to disqualify any team based on the behaviour of any
given team member of that particular team.

B. CHECK-IN PROCEDURES

1. Each member of the team is required to hand in provided lanyards with their student card and Spirit
Deposit Coupon to officials at the score table prior to the game. An individual who fails to do so is
defined as INELIGIBLE to play in that game. Failure to comply will result in a FORFEIT and the loss of
half the Spirit Deposit ($10).

C. STARTING TIME OF THE GAMES

1. All teams are required to be at their games five minutes prior to start time.

2. All games will start on time.

3. A late team will be given a grace period of five (5) minutes past the scheduled start time, which will be
deducted from the total playing time.

4. If a team fails to meet the minimum number of players, as per sport specific rules (below), after the
grace period, the team will be required to default and a win will be awarded to the opposing team.

5. If both teams are late, both will default and no points will be awarded.

6. Teams defaulting a game for any reason will have half their Spirit Deposit forfeited.

SECTION II: THE GAME

A. SCORING

1. A match is played best 2 of 3 games. For each game, the first player to reach 11 points wins that
game, however a game must be won by at least a two point margin.

2. Playoff games will be best 3 out of 5 games.

3. A point is scored after each ball is put into play

4. Unless the rally is a let, a player shall score a point:

a) if his opponent fails to make a good service;
b) if his opponent fails to make a good return;
c) if, after he has made a good service or a good return, the ball touches anything other than the
net assembly before being struck by his opponent;
d) if the ball passes beyond his end line without touching his court, after being struck by his
opponent;
e) if his opponent obstructs the ball;
f) if his opponent strikes the ball twice successively;
g) if his opponent, or anything his opponent wears or carries, moves the playing surface;
h) if his opponent, or anything his opponent wears or carries, touches the net assembly;
i) if his opponent's free hand touches the playing surface;
j) if a doubles opponent strikes the ball out of the sequence established by the first server and first
receiver

5. The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface, but not the sides.

B. FLOW OF THE MATCH

1. Each player serves two points in a row and then switch server.

2. However, if a score of 10-10 is reached in any game, then each server serves only one point and then
the server is switched.

3. After each game, the players switch side of the table. In the final game (ie 5th game), the players
switch side again after either player reaches 5 points.

C. LEGAL SERVICE

1. The ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so
the ball first bounces on the server's side and then the opponent's side.

-2-
2. If the serve is legal except that it touches the net, it is called a let serve. Let serves are not scored and
are reserved.

D. A LET

1. The rally shall be a let

a) if in service the ball, in passing over or around the net assembly, touches it, provided the service
is otherwise good or the ball is obstructed by the receiver or his partner;
b) if the service is delivered when the receiving player or pair is not ready, provided that neither
the receiver nor his partner attempts to strike the ball;
c) if failure to make a good service or a good return or otherwise to comply with the Laws is due to
a disturbance outside the control of the player;
d) if play is interrupted by the umpire or assistant umpire.
