Practice Problem (6)

1. For the crane system of the figure below, determine the hydraulic cylinder force required to lift the 2000 lb load.

Solution:
Equating moments about fixed pin A due to the cylinder force F and the 1000 lb weight yields: 2000 x perpend. dist. AG = F x perpend. dist. AE

From trigonometry of right triangles we have:

2000 x 5.30 = F x 1.25 Hence F = 8480 lb

2. Solve Example 6.2 of the course notes, if the weight is to accelerate from a zero velocity to a velocity of 5 ft/s in 0.5 s. Solution:
Per Newtons Law we have

F = ma

where

a=

5 ft

s = 10 ft s2 0.5 s

Summing forces on the 6000 lb weight and using values determined in the solution to Exercise 6-23 we have p Ap 3779 lb =

6000 lb 10 ft 2 = 1863 lb ft s 32.2 s2

p Ap = Fcyl = 5642 lb

3. Change the data of Example 6.5 of the class notes to metric units and solve for the maximum pressure developed by the cushion. Solution:
The following metric data are applicable: Coefficient of friction = 0.15

= 3450 kPa We now first calculate the steady state piston velocity (V) prior to deceleration.

Next we calculate the acceleration (a) of the piston during the 0.0254m displacement using the constant acceleration (or deceleration) equation.

Substituting into Newtons Law of Motion Equation and solving for p2 yields:
