FRIDAY 22nd MARCH 2013

Thank you for a great term As we approach Easter and the end of the second term in this academic year, there seems to be so much to be grateful for: Thank you to Mrs Smith and the band of diggers and dredgers who gave time last Saturday to begin work on the Wildlife Wonder Zone; it is looking much tidier and we can now enjoy watching the frogs from cleared pathways this spring time, as well as being able to plan further improvements as funding allows. Thank you to those who have been donating dried and tinned foods for the Leominster Community Larder; several boxes laden with essential groceries have been gratefully received and distributed to those in need in the local area. Thank you for joining the School Councils Red Nose Wear something to make someone smile day and coming to the PTA discos. 118.20 was raised in school on the day. Thank you to Philippa and Warren Alexander, Meg Thorpe and Katie Cave-Browne-Cave for their incredible enthusiasm and support in preparing the children for the Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival this week; they have given a great deal of time to make this weeks successes possible. Thank you to all of you for attending a Parents Evening and working with us to ensure that your child learns to love and loves to learn. Thank you to Mr Jack Pierce who has been helping voluntarily in every class since October. We are thrilled that Mr Pierce has been accepted to train as a teacher at Bedford University next year and are very excited that, in changing educational times, committed and new teachers like Mr Pierce will inspire children in the next generation. Mr Pierce is joining a group going to Tanzania on 15th April; he will be visiting Moivaro Primary School and other schools in the area and we do hope that he has a safe and exciting adventure. Thank you also to the family of Emma Thorpe who have been busy knitting school jumpers for the children at Moivaro that Mr Pierce will deliver by hand. Thank you to everyone who is already responding to our plea to reduce absence which is the outcome of holidays taken in term time. Thank you to Carl Beebee who gives of his time and skills to help voluntarily with our school website. Thank you to Bryony Woodcock, Helga Douthwaite, Ben Woodcock, Katie Cave-Browne-Cave and Mrs Canning who have started a fantastic new Art Club this term. Thank you to Jason Powell, of Powell & Co. Construction, for a very generous donation of 350 which will enable us to replace the rather holey cricket nets ready for the new season (hopefully we shall have the weather to match eventually !) Thank you to everyone who supports the school in so many ways. All the staff and I wish you a blessed and peaceful Eastertime.

In the Summer Term:

There will be an exciting opportunity for us all (children, staff, parents, members of the local community) to perform JONAH MAN JAZZ in Kingsland Church. Start practising those arpeggios. more details to follow next term! Please try and avoid being away on Friday 12th July.

Some important things to read and note

The time of our Maundy Thursday Family Service in Kingsland Church has been CHANGED from 9.30am to 2pm. The Service will be led by our new interim vicar, Rev Julie Read, and everyone is most welcome. Some of you may remember the fantastic Easter Experience that the children went to in Kingsland Church two years ago. We are hoping that local volunteers will prepare and present a Pentecost Experience day in Kingsland Church on 17th May this year. There will be a planning meeting at Kingsland Church on Tuesday 16th April at 7pm for anyone who might be interested in helping in any way. Along with this newsletter you should receive a copy of the Parents acceptance form, which is part of our recently established e-safety Policy. Please sign this document and return it to school before the end of term. There is also a sheet for you to read through and sign with KS1 pupils. The entire e-safety policy will be available to read in school or on the school website. The menu of After School Clubs for the Summer Term should also be with this newsletter. Please return this on Monday 25th March should your child wish to attend. Please notify the school office immediately should there be any change in your childs health needs e.g. if asthma or any other condition has been diagnosed.

Class 4 take us down under !

Yesterday Class 4 donned their cork hats, picked up their didgeridoos and boomerangs and waltzed with Matilda in a sensational class assembly. The class have been learning about Australia and it was wonderful to see their amazing art work, to hear how much history they have understood and to marvel at the excellent writing that this topic has inspired. Well done, Class 4!

The very first North Herefordshire Schools Orchestral Day

On Wednesday 51 musical children from Kingsland, Luston, Leintwardine, Orleton, Wigmore and Shobdon Schools came together at Luctonians to make music! Mr Debenham organised and conducted the first event of its kind and it was an absolute delight for the children to share their talents together. The days rehearsals of music, from the 1500s to the Flintstones, culminated in a concert attended by parents and teachers from across the county. We are very grateful to the Margaret Allen Foundation who sponsored this event and to Luctonians for allowing us to use the club as the venue for the day.

Plenty to Celebrate
A March Music Concert On Wednesday 13th March the schools steel band introduced and concluded an evening of musical variety and talent in our school hall. Over thirty children played solos on various string, brass and woodwind instruments as well as piano and drums. The standard was superb and it was a joy to celebrate the childrens confidence, talent and sense of commitment. Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival 2013 This was a wonderful opportunity for all the children as they demonstrated the courage and skill to recite poetry, act, sight-read or read from the Bible. Over 100 entries into the Festival came from our school. Every child was amazing and grew in confidence through this experience. There were some exceptional performances: Max Lavey was awarded the Thomas Cup in the 6 and under Poetry Speaking Class; Emily Harris came 3rd in the Age 7 Poetry Speaking Class; Cassie Alexander was awarded a trophy for Sight Reading 6 years and under; Vida Thorpe, Lily Baker and Ellie Runacus excelled in the Age 9 Poetry Speaking; Danielle McQueen and Annie Sparey came 1st in the Age 9 Share a Poem; Isobel Mason and Fran Wictome came 3rd in the Age 7 Share a Poem class; May, Lucy and Elsie came 2nd with their scene from Hamlet; Lucy and Elsie were 2nd in the Under 11 Share a Poem; Charlotte Grundy, Eleanor Corbett and Emily Pudge were 2nd in Age 8 Share a Poem. The Choral Speaking group, which was a team of 24 children from Year 1 to Year 4, gave enthralling performances of two poems. The adjudicator was bowled over by the standard of all the entries in the class and went on to award first place to Kingsland CE Primary School! The group has also been invited to perform in the Courtyard at the Gala Concert tomorrow evening. Twenty-Four Game: Ellie Runacus, Hebe Garbutt, Jake Boho and Ned Loveridge represented our school in the annual Herefordshire Maths 24-Game competition held at Broadlands School on Tuesday. Jake came 4th out of the 72 amazingly fast mathematicians who were there .

Sports round-up
Football: On Tuesday 5th March the A and B football teams went to Orleton Primary School to play their teams. Both sides played very well but Orleton came out on top with a 3-1 victory. Kingslands amazing goalkeeper saved a penalty. Ben Carter Despite a torrential downpour before the game a young Kingsland side travelled to Luston Primary. It was a close game with Kingsland having most of the chances. The first goal came from an expertly struck corner which was buried in the net by Marshall. Luston scrambled back with a scruffy goal before halftime. Kingsland then continued to dominate the game with Barcelona style passing and were rewarded with a fantastic Jesse strike. The match ended 2:1 to Kingsland. Thank you Mr Powell and Mr Pierce for organising a great game. Joe Corrick On Thursday 14th March, Kingslands A team went to play in the Hereford City football tournament. We played as a team and managed to get to the final, from communicating, encouraging and working hard with our greatest efforts. We are very thankful to Mr Powell and Mr Pierce for taking us and giving us an opportunity to get outside and have a great game. Marshall Steadman. Mrs Daniel would like to add that this was an incredible achievement with Kingsland losing only 1:0 in the final to St Pauls CE Primary. 28 Herefordshire schools played in this tournament. Mitchell Hamer Netball Matches: It is very unusual for a netball match to be won in the first six minutes, but that is what happened when our Kingsland A team met Orleton on the 5th March! By the end of the first quarter, with superb passing around the D, Lucy, Hebe and Sophie had worked together to notch up an impressive 7 goals to 1. Orleton tried hard to catch up during the remainder of the match but unfortunately failed to gain control, and the match ended with Kingsland winning 14-9. Well done to our players: Sophie, May, Elsie, Jamie, Lucy, Hebe and Hannah. Our B team then took to the court against a very experienced Orleton team. Despite all their best efforts, they lost 14-0. Well done to Polly, Georgia, Jade, Vida, Ellie and Isla.
