Commentary—
REMEMBERING THE 80S, SORT OF
Have you ever taken that long, hot shower in the
morning and forgot something? You know those
mornings for the briefest of moments when you are
not so sure whose house your in? Not those mornings
after a night of hooting it up that happens rarer and
rarer these days because your body just can take it
any more, even though your mind thinks differently.
“Go on, have another” your mind says in that brief
moment of clarity while the lamp shade is adjusted on
your head. No, I am talking about those other morn-
ings.
The day before was hard. You didn’t even know it
was hard. You went through your paces, but the little
things in the universe were not just working your way.
The tire was flat. Getting the spare out was even
more irritating as it seemed to have melded to the car,
the lug nuts now just rusted posts. You carried on
even though you were a little behind. Yet the phone
keeps ringing...this or that needs attention, more so
now that you are running behind. You pick up the mail
and—low and behold - all the bills in the world arrived
at once; or at least it felt that way. You get through
the day, finally, and a home cooked meal is only what
takes less time to thaw from the freezer. Tired and
drained, you finally find a little peace in the few hours
of sleep.
You get up early the next day with only one foot
planted in the here and now with the other left behind
in the day you just survived. The alarm clock sounds
even more annoying this morning. You walk to the
bathroom somewhat bouncing off either side of the
hallway. Not really, but you certainly are not walking a
straight line. Finally, the start of the new day begins
with a shower. You do your routine, one you’ve been
doing for decades; the particulars are to each own, but
suddenly it dawns on you soon thereafter with the first
hurdle and mental thud of the day. The poignant mo-
ment of aged mental unsobriety and the cause to
question ones acuity: “Did I wash my hair?”
This, or something like it has happened to all of us.
We forget the most basic thing. Off in Never Never
Land may be true but it can also be a comfortable
crutch. At least when the story is told to friends and
family. But Never Never Land may be taking up too
much space in our mental cubicle we call are head-
quarters of thought and command. For the brain may
be a wonderful, mysteries thing, the last great frontier
to some, but we may be getting closer to understand-
ing at what time in our lives admission to Never, Never
Land is possible.
A recent study released in the pages of that often
sought after newsstand rag, Neurobiology of Aging,
suggest that the clock is ticking on memory and cogni-
tive skills, much more early than previously thought.
Essentially, “brain decline” begins as early as 27.
Tests used to solve puzzles, recall words, story de-
tails, and spot patterns in letters and symbols, were
used on 2000 healthy people aged 18-60. Research-
ers found that “Things like memory stayed intact until
the age of 37” according to the BBC report [did you
really think I read the Journal of Neurobiology of Aging
myself?], “While abilities based on accumulated
knowledge...increased until the age of 60.” That’s the
good news. Here’s the big, big thud: “The first age at
which there was a marked decline was at 27 in tests of
brain speed, reasoning and visual puzzle-solving abil-
ity.”
The problem is...I can’t remember what I was think-
ing when I was 27. I can’t even recall where I was. TT

"Hoke" is a back-formation
of "hokum," which was probably created as a blend of
"hocus-pocus" and "bunkum." "Hokum" is a word for the
theatrical devices used to evoke a desired audience
response. The verb "hoke" appeared in the early 20th
century and was originally used (as it still can be today)
when actors performed in an exaggerated or overly
sentimental way. Today, it is often used adjectivally in
the form "hoked-up," as in "hoked-up dialogue." The
related word "hokey" was coined soon after "hoke" to

discovery and excavation, the Frenchman Formation
Terrestrial Ecosystem Conference will be held in
Eastend, Saskatchewan. Attendees from across North
America will present research on the wealth of fossils
found in southwest Saskatchewan, including “Scotty” the
T. rex.
The organizers of this event are the T. rex Discovery
Centre, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, and the
University of Alberta.
