Spring Bling April 18
Area ladies are invited out on the town for a special event entitled "Spring Bling...A 70's Thing." The outing, set for Thursday, April 18 from Noon to 9 p.m., will feature 14 West Bend area shops, 7 restaurants and 2 salons. Shoppers can begin at any of the participating businesses and enjoy free trolley rides to the other locations from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. The 2013 edition of Spring Bling has a 70's theme. Anyone dressing in 70's attire will receive an extra door prize ticket at the Welcome Center, which is located in the River Shores lobby. Each store will be offering specials and activities, and most will be serving hors d'oeuvres and appetizers. Museum of Wisconsin Art opens new facility
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Museum of Wisconsin Art officially opened the doors on its new 31,700-square-foot facility April 6. For the staff, the volunteers and the board (of directors), this has been an eight-year labor of love, museum board President Dale Kent said at the start of the formal program. It was built on the backs of dreamers and by the hands of doers. This is to me just another example of the can-do, bootstrap attitude of this community up here in West Bend. The new facility is located at 205 Veterans Avenue in West Bend. It is the most recent evolution of a facility that started as the West Bend Gallery of Fine Art in 1961 with collections from artist Carl Von Marr from the Pick family. Kent noted the facility has grown to become a regional art facility that showcases Wisconsin art. What we hope we built is a gathering spot for artists, art lovers in the community we want this place to be vibrant and fun, Kent said. We want this to be every artists home away from home and we want the entire West Bend area to be so proud of this building that whenever you have out of town guests at your home you make it a point to drive by here and show this place off as a measure of pride you have in your hometown. West Bend Mayor Kraig Sadownikow said he sought to come up with words to describe the new facility and ended up with wow, congratulations, and thank you. Wow is pretty obvious. From the exterior architecture, landmark building thats been created here to maybe more importantly the arts thats hanging on the wall, the conversation and camaraderie that will take place in here for generations, Sadownikow said. George Tzougros, executive director of the Wisconsin Arts Board, said the new facility became possible due to the commitment from the museum years ago to collect Wisconsin art. The work that this museum has done to support Wisconsin art has been (known) already, and this space is only going to leap that into the stratosphere, Tzougros said. Tzougros also cited the creativity of the art from the early days of the state to the present. Why is that important? For two reasons: Soon there will be children streaming through this building and their creativity will be inspired. Who knows what theyre going to do, whether theyre going to become artists or theyre going to become any other employee or entrepreneur in the state,

What common car noises mean

(BPT) - "What is that rattling? Is it serious?" We all can get a little paranoid about a new sound our car is making. Those sounds can certainly be annoying, but what people don't realize is sometimes those sounds may be linked to something more serious. About 7 percent of car crashes are caused by some kind of vehicle failure, with tire degradation and brake system failures topping the list, according to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But tire and brake failure aren't the only types of vehicle problems that can lead to accidents - engine, steering system and suspension failures also cause crashes. "Getting your oil changed, tires rotated and brake pads checked regularly not only helps keep your car running smoothly, but it also helps keep you and your family safe," says Matt Myers, senior vice president of claims with Erie Insurance. "It's also important to check your car's transmission fluids and get the 50,000-mile and 100,000-mile checks. It might sound like a lot, but regular preventative maintenance is the best way to keep those strange car noises - and accidents - to a minimum." Here are six common car noises people hear and what they could mean: Humming or groaning When you hear humming while driving at faster speeds, it's a sign there probably is some wear on your tires, which can lead to serious issues. It could be located on the insides of your tires, which is hard to diagnose on your own, but not having it checked is a risk, because the steel belts in the tire might be coming apart. Growling This noise could change or even go away when you turn the wheel, but it is usually caused by a defective front wheel bearing. The change in noise could be a result of the shift in the weight of the car as you turn. Whining and creaking You might hear these noises backing up or turning. It could be the result of a ball joint or tie rod seizing up. Squeaking This can be a high-pitched, steady annoyance that lets you know it's time to get your brake pads checked or replaced. Grinding This sound means two pieces of metal are touching when they shouldn't be. This sound could be a multitude of things: brakes, powertrain, suspension or something else. Whatever the case, a grinding sound means you need to get your car checked out as soon as possible. Hissing A hissing sound might occur after you turn off your ignition and can sometimes be followed by smoke from under your hood. The next time you hear strange noises coming from your car, don't just turn up the radio to drown them out - get them checked by a mechanic. Slow down and save this spring

By Craig W. Armstrong The snow and ice have melted, the roads are clear and spring is here. Winter driving can be dangerous and very frustrating. Going to the store or getting to work during the winter takes planning. You have to allow for road conditions, traffic and the stress of taking to the ice roads. Once spring arrives, most people just want to relax behind the wheel and enjoy the open road. But there is something else to consider that you might not have thought about during the winter monthsgas. Getting from place to place in the winter is enough to occupy your mind, but once the roads are clear, you want to drive farther and faster, and that means using more gas. Here are a few ways to save on gas as you spend more time in your vehicle. Slow down and save. The faster you go, the fewer miles you will get to the gallon. Driving over 60 mph will decrease your gas mileage. It has been estimated that every 5 mph over 60 you drive, you are going to consume more fuel. Besides how fast you are driving, consider HOW you are driving. If you rapidly accelerate or brake, you are using more gas and will lower your mileage by more than 30%. Keep the pressure under control. Correct tire pressure is crucial to good gas mileage. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated. The correct PSI (pounds per square inch) can be found on the tire, on the sticker on the door or in your owner's manual. Change your oil regularly. The classic rule of thumb is to change your oil every three months or 3,000 miles. This rule is a source of great debate. The point at which oil breaks down has improved over the years and many experts feel today's oil lasts longer. The best way to judge when your oil needs to be changed is by consulting the vehicle owner's manual. Pace yourself. If you do a lot of highway driving, use your cruise control. This will allow you to keep a constant rate of speed and improve your gas mileage. Lighten your load. During the winter months, you may have put bags of salt or sand in your trunk for added weight and traction. Now is the time to get rid of them. A lighter vehicle is a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Drag on your vehicle decreases its efficiency by 2%. Get rid of any nonessential items in your car and save some money on gas. Spring is the time to shake off the cold of winter and enjoy the warmer weather. Just remember it may be warmer outside, but gas prices are still the same.

Describing a problem to a mechanic

By Craig W. Armstrong "It's like a muffled squeak followed by a high-pitched bong, and sometimes it just hums. It almost sounds like it's humming that old ABBA song...oh, I can't remember the name of it, but it sounds like that." Is this how you explain to your mechanic the noise your vehicle is making? Have you ever used the word "galonk"? Have you ever imitated a Madagascar hissing cockroach when describing a noise or mentioned anything about what it would sound like if someone squeezed a duck...really hard? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably need help conveying troublesome sounds coming from your vehicle. Cars and trucks make lots of sounds; some are normal and some are a definite indication that something is not functioning properly. Most people have a good idea of which sounds are normal and which ones need to be checked out. The important thing is to be as accurate as possible when describing those abnormal noises to your mechanic. Like doctors, mechanics need to have a reasonable and thorough explanation of the "patient's" symptoms; they will rely on you to give them that information. Be able to explain when you hear the noise. Is it at start-up or when you turn off the vehicle, when you are going uphill or around a curve, when you're braking or when the gears shift? Be specific in your explanation. Next describe the location of the sound. Rather than using the terms "right" or "left" side of the vehicle, you can avoid confusion by referring to the "driver's side" and the "passenger's side." Is the noise coming from the engine, underneath the car, from the rear, around the tires? You may even want to draw a diagram indicating the troublesome spot. Often a mechanic will test-drive your vehicle and listen for sounds so they can accurately diagnose the problem, but how many times have you taken in your car and it won't make the noise or "do that thing" for the mechanic? The main way to avoid this frustration is to be an expert, prepared witness. Explain any and all known "maladies" associated with the noise. There may be vibration or leaking fluid. Explain where you feel the vibration-in the steering wheel, under your feet, etc. Indicate the location of any leak and the color of the fluid if possible. Are there any other noticeable differences in how the vehicle is riding or handling? To repeat: Be thorough and specific in your explanation. Mechanics expect a certain amount of charades from customers (and they probably enjoy them sometimes), but accuracy in your explanation will help them do a better job of repairing your vehicle and getting you back on the road faster.

The best shops understand that not all drivers know what a tune-up is and request one on the assumption that it will fix whatever is wrong with their vehicle. They will ask why you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go from there. You may discover that what you really need are new battery cables rather than new spark plugs. Once you have several estimates, sit down and compare them. Select the shop whose estimate includes a fairly thorough inspection at a fair price. You want to make sure that when you drive away from the shop your vehicle is running smoothly and efficiently. The term "tune-up" means different things to different people. Keep that in mind as you shop around for estimates. Know what you are getting before you take your vehicle in, and if you are getting a tune-up for any reason other than maintenance issues, relay that information to the shop. If you don't, you could end up paying for a tune-up plus a repair.

Things you didnt know about buying a home

By Sam Erickson Home buying is a complicated process, so most people spend time preparing themselves by getting to know the market and researching a good team. Research can only take you so far, though. Here are some things that might surprise you during your home buying process. The paperwork. After the bad lending habits that led to the recent housing crash, there is more paperwork than ever. There will be paperwork when you sign an agreement with your real estate agent. There will be paperwork when you make an offer, and there will be lots of paperwork when you go for closing. There will even be paperwork that verifies that your paperwork is your paperwork. It can be dizzying and confusing, but you should never sign paperwork that you dont understand. Experts have a tendency to move through paperwork quickly because they know what it is, but youve got the right to demand explanation. The home inspection can derail a home purchase. After a long search, youve finally put an offer in that has been accepted, and youre elated. Now youre waiting only on the home inspection. Be prepared, the home inspector will find problems. If it comes back with lots of problems, there will be negotiation. A bad inspection doesnt spell the death knell for a deal, but if there are significant problems or the seller is unwilling to negotiate in ways that you think are reasonable, then a bad home inspection can lead you to pull out of an impending deal. Extra expenses. While youve been saving for the down payment, there are always going to be some extra expenses in the home buying process. You might need to pay for additional home inspections. You might need to pay for some estimates for repairs, whether structural or cosmetic. You might need to rent a storage unit for a few days. Stash away some extra cash to meet these needs. Things will not go as you expect. With so many moving parts to a housing deal, buyer, seller, agents, lenders, inspectors and the like) there is always the possibility that someone will make a decision that will put a bump into the road to your new home. Trying to be flexible and available can help you meet the everevolving needs of this diverse group and keep you on track. The process is complex, but the reward is just as great, so its worth going through some unexpected hurdles to get into your first home.

Statewide tornado drill set for April 18 The City of West Bend, in cooperation with Washington County Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service, will be participating in a Statewide Tornado Drill on Thursday, April 18. A 1 p.m. the National Weather Service will issue a mock Tornado Watch. The drill will continue with a mock Tornado Warning at 1:45 p.m. At that time, the City of West Bend Emergency Sirens will activate for three minutes as if this was an actual Tornado Warning. The drill will conclude at 2 p.m. with an all clear. The drill tests the notification procedures that take place during a severe weather event. If actual severe weather occurs anywhere in the State on April 18, the drill will be postponed until Friday, April 19. Appraiser coming to Slinger Library April 20 Expert appraiser Mark Moran will come to the Slinger Community Librarylocated at 220 Slinger RoadSaturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, to offer appraisals for patrons. Sabin wins shot put at state TFA meet

West Bend West finished 10th while Slinger finished 14th at the Wisconsin Track and Field Association (TFA) state indoor championship at UW-Whitewater April 6. Slinger's Kiley Sabin won the shot put with a toss of 40 feet 9.5 inches. For West, Erica Wanie finished fourth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.64 and fifth in the long jump with a distance of 169 0.25 inches. The West 4x400 meter relay team of Kayla Janto, Celina Wanta, Kyra Gudex and Wanie finished fourth in the event with a time of 4:11.15.
