COCKPIT SEATS DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

PILOT SEATS Seat movements adjusted. can be electrically or manually BACKREST Pull the control handle marked "R" to adjust the backrest position. The system is controlled via two cables. A gas cylinder acts as a return spring for the backwards movement of the backrest. LUMBAR REST Two coaxial knobs enable vertical and horizontal lumbar rest adjustment. Rotation of the triangular knob ensures depth adjustment of the lumbar rest. Rotation of the second serrated knob ensures vertical movement of the lumbar rest. INBOARD ARMREST The inboard armrest can be raised vertically and stowed behind the backrest. The inboard armrest is located on the pedestal side Height adjustment is made using a knob located on the front.

VERTICAL TRAVEL To adjust the seat upwards or downwards, pull the control handle marked "V"to unlock the seat. Manual control : - Take your weight off the seat and adjust the seat to the required position. - Release the handle to lock the seat. - To adjust the seat downwards the procedure is similar, your weight is sufficient to move the seat downwards. - The down movement of the seat is slowed down by means of a gas cylinder. Electrical control : - For vertical electrical control, place the control switch in the UP or DOWN position until the seat reaches the required position. HORIZONTAL TRAVEL To move the seat forwards or backwards pull the control handle marked "H"to unlock the seat. Manual control : - When the desired position is reached, release the handle to lock the seat. Electrical control : - For horizontal electrical control, place the control switch in the FORWARD or REAR position until the seat reaches the required position. NOTE: Horizontal travel indicators give the longitudinal position of the seat.

COCKPIT SEATS DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

PILOT SEATS SIDESTICK ARMREST The sidestick armrest comprises the fixed arm, the carrier arm and the sidestick table. The fixed arm is attached to the seat pan. It supports the carrier arm and sidestick table assembly. Sidestick table height adjustment is controlled by a knob located on the armrest. Armrest table tilt angle is controlled by a knob located on the front of the armrest. A position indicator fitted on top of the table shows the table tilt. A wheel avoids interference between the armrest and the lateral console when the seat is moved forwards with the table fully inclined. SAFETY HARNESS The shoulder harness is fitted on an inertia reel which can be locked by a control lever, located behind the backrest. THIRD OCCUPANT SEAT Seat movements are manually adjusted. A manual control enables the seat to be moved from its stowage. A second control serves to unlock the headrest. The headrest can be folded down so that the circuit breaker panel can be opened while the seat is in its stowed position. A compartment closed by VELCRO tapes and containing a life vest is provided in the lower part of the seat. The safety harness includes straps and an inertia reel controlled by a handle located on the left of the seat, which serves to lock or unlock the inertia reel. FOURTH OCCUPANT SEAT The fourth occupant seat is a non- adjustable folding seat. The seat cushion is folded down into place and returns to its stowed position by pressing it upwards and against the partition. The lower section of the seat is provided with a compartment containing a life vest and closed by VELCRO tapes. The safety harness includes straps and an inertia reel, locking control located in the coat storage compartment. The fourth occupant seat is optionally installed.

PASSENGER DOOR ESCAPE SLIDE DESCRIPTION/DEPLOYMENT

Passenger Door Escape Slide Description/Deployment A slide deployment can be initiated when ever the door is opened in the emergency configuration When the slide is armed it can be checked on a red indicator, located on the button of the slide decorative cover. As soon as the door handle is lifted the door opens and the escape slide is ejected from its container and the inflation system is activated. The deployment and inflation sequence is automatically initiated when the cabin door is opened. The slide deploys into its final usable position within 3 seconds. The escape slide is connected to the cabin floor by a girt extension which is attached to the girt bar at the door sill. Should the escape slide not inflate automatically a red manual inflation handle must be pulled. This handle is located on the girt extension. Lets have a look at the inflation system. The system is automatically activated as soon as the slide is ejected from its container. The valve regulator assembly incorporates a direct reading, temperature compensated pressure gage, which indicates the gas charge in the inflation reservoir, relative to ambient temperature. The gas stored within the inflation reservoir is discharged into the inflatable through flexible hoses and an aspirator. Ambient air is drawn in, through the flaps of the aspirator by the partial vacuum, created by the high velocity in the venturi. Then the flaps close and the remaining gas charge tops the inflatable up to its operating pressure. Inflation is therefore rapid and reservoir size is maintained at minimum. Restraint devices are used to control the deployment sequence. The primary restraint mechanism is a precision fuse frangible link, which separates at a predetermined force value. In case of pressure loss, no fail handles, located on both side of the runway end, allow the inflation to be used as a hand-held evacuation chute. In the event of a ditching, grasp lines are fitted around the outside of the inflatable to facilitate the use of slide as a flotation device. The slide is equipped with a lighting system. The lights located along the side tubes and across the runway, are supplied from the aircraft emergency power supply units. The lights are automatically supplied with power when the slide is deployed. The escape slide can be disconnected from the aircraft floor whenever necessary. For the disconnection the following steps must be taken. Lift the flap of the girt extension to gain access to the white disconnect handle. Pull the handle. The girt extension incorporates a quick release feature, a daisy chain, which permits rapid detachment of the inflatable from the aircraft.

Once detached from the floor the inflatable drops from the aircraft but remains attached to the girt bar by means of a string, which must be cut by using the knife located next to it, on the girt extension. The inflatable is then completely disconnected from the aircraft.

PASSENGER DOOR ESCAPE SLIDE RAFT DESCRIPTION / DEPLOYMENT

NOTE : In this module the PASSENGER DOOR SLIDE DESCRIPTION / DEPLOYMENT is described on the A320 but the principle is the same for the A319 and the A321. DESCRIPTION The forward and rear cabin doors of the A320 are equipped with slide rafts. The inflation and deployment sequence is automatically initiated when the door is opened in armed configuration. The slide raft is ejected out of its container, and remains folded by restraint devices which break at determined pressure points to allow correct deployment. The slide raft is stowed in a container connected to the cabin door. NORMAL OPERATION As soon as the door handle is lifted, the door is pneumatically pushed open and the slide raft, fixed with a girt bar to the cabin floor, is pulled out of the container, drops down and inflates automatically. As the inflatable falls down, the inflation system is activated. The gas stored in the inflation cylinder is discharged through flexible hoses to the aspirators. The aspirator flaps open and ambient air is drawn in under partial vaccum, created by the high velocity in the venturi. Then the flaps close and the remaining gas, tops up the inflatable to its operational pressure. Should the automatic inflation system fail, the slide raft must be inflated manually. MANUAL OPERATION For that, the red manual inflation handle located on the right hand side of the girt extension must be pulled. A lighting system is fitted on both sides and on the runway end of the inflatable. The power supply for this lighting system is provided by the cabin emergency power supply units. Two assist handles are located on both sides at the lower end of the inflatable, to allow assisting people to hold on. In case of a ditching, prior to door opening the survival kit must be connected to the slide raft. The survival kit is stored in the nearest overhead bin. Place the survival kit on the floor, forward of the door, detach the lanyard from the girt bar. Pull the lanyard and the hook, to snap on front of the survival kit. Then open the door. The slide raft drops out of the container and deploys.

OFFWING ESCAPE SLIDE DEPLOYMENT

NOTE : In this module the OFFWING ESCAPE SLIDE DEPLOYMENT is described on the A320 but the principle is the same for the A319. The offwing escape slide is packed in a container assembly, which in turn is mounted into the centre fuselage belly fairing. Two type "3" exits are located over each wing and are always in armed configuration. Two emergency lights underneath the wing exits light the escape way leading to the escape slide which is pointed out with red fluorescent arrows. The opening of one wing exit will initiate the deployment sequence. The escape slide is ejected out of its, container and deploys in approximately four seconds. The inflation system consists of an inflation cylinder, which is located in the aft cargo compartment. Activation of the release mechanism initiates the inflation sequence. The gas stored in the cylinder is discharged to the inflatable slide through flexible hoses and an aspirator. The aspirator flaps open and ambient air is drawn into the slide. The slide remains folded by restraint devices, which break at a predetermined force, to permit correct deployment. Two black arrows located on the ramp section indicate the direction of the escape route. A lighting system is provided on the slide. The lights are located on the ramps along the side tubes and across the runway end. A red manual inflation handle, located in each exit frame, must be pulled to manually activate the inflation and deployment sequence, in case of automatic release failure. If the slide is deployed but not inflated, it still can be used as a hand-held escape chute. On the ramp section top, a hook is located and this hook must be connected to an attachment fitting on the wing. Two red NO FAIL HANDLES are located on both sides of the escape slide on the runway end. Four able bodied men must hold the deflated slide extended, by means of the no fail handles, to allow the passengers on the wing to descend.

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT/ EMERGENCY EXIT ESCAPE SLIDE

DESCRIPTION/DEPLOYMENT The escape slide for the type "C" doors, is stored underneath the door inside the fuselage. The inflation cylinder is located in the overhead bin, over the door. The cylinder is in a protection box and can be seen through a plexiglass window. The pressure can be checked on the pressure level indicator. For correct pressure the needle must be in the green section. To initiate the slide deployment, the door must be opened in the armed configuration. To open the door, uncover the control handle, lift the handle fully up, and release! The door opens outwards. The escape slide in the meantime inflates and deploys completely. The escape slide is ready for use when the door is locked in the fully open position. Should the door open but the escape slide not inflate, a red handle for manual inflation is located in the door upper right hand frame. The transparent protective cover must be taken off and the red handle pulled to initiate the manual slide inflation. The escape slide for the type "C" doors is stowed in a special compartment in the fuselage, underneath the door. The deployment sequence starts as soon as the door is opened in armed configuration. One aspirator is connected to the inflation cylinder by means of a flexible hose. During the door opening the inflation cylinder regulator value is actuated, and primary gas is supplied to the aspirator. The aspirator flaps open and outside air is drawn in. The flaps close as soon as the correct pressure is reached. The slide has a single lane sliding surface with a brake path at the bottom end, which slows down the speed of the evacuees.

DISCONNECTION The disconnect handle and a knife are located on the girt extension close to the door step. The knife is on the left hand side in a clearly marked pouch. A disconnect handle is located under a velcro flap marked "FOR DITCHING USE". To release the slide, lift the flap, grasp the white handle and pull. Should the slide not drop immediately, push down on the girt extension. The daisy-chain on the packboard releases, and the slide is free to drop. The slide remains attached to the aircraft by means of a mooring line. This line must be cut by means of the hook knife.

CARGO COMPARTMENT PRESENTATION

GENERAL The lower deck is divided into three cargo compartments. The different cargo compartments are: - The FWD cargo, - The AFT cargo, - The Bulk cargo compartment. The FWD and AFT cargo compartments can be optionally equipped with a semi-automatic cargo loading system. Basically they have tie-down/attachment points for the nets and straps which keep the bulk cargo in place. FWD CARGO COMPARTMENT The FWD cargo compartment is basically equipped to be loaded with bulk and loose baggage. The optional semi-automatic cargo loading system transports pallets and containers and is operated from a control panel installed on the cargo door. AFT CARGO COMPARTMENT The AFT cargo compartment is basically equipped to be loaded with bulk and loose baggage. The optional semi-automatic cargo loading system transports pallets and containers and is operated from a control panel installed on the cargo door. BULK CARGO COMPARTMENT The Bulk cargo compartment can only be loaded with bulk and loose baggage A divider net with a screen separates the bulk cargo compartment from the AFT cargo compartment. ACCESS Access to the FWD, Aft and Bulk cargo compartments is gained by two outwards opening doors. Access to the bulk cargo compartment can also be gained by the optional bulk cargo door, if it is installed. The cargo doors are located on the right hand side of the fuselage. The FWD and AFT cargo doors are operated upward by two hydraulic actuators with pressure provided by the yellow electric pump (normal operation) or by a hand pump (manual operation).

CARGO LOADING OPERATIONS

CARGO LOADING The cargo compartments can be loaded with different types of containers : - full size container. - half size container. - pallet. The FWD cargo compartment of the A320 can receive three containers or pallets and the Aft cargo compartment four. Lets have a look to the A320 aft compartment loading and unloading. Switch on the compartment lights. Lower the two manual sill latches. Lower the XZ-latches. Switch on the power on the control panel. The cargo loading system is ready to be used. The container itself lowers the overridable sill latches. When the container is over the lateral Power Drive Unit, move the joystick to the "IN" position. At the end of the lateral travel, move the joystick to the longitudinal position. The longitudinal Power Drive Units move the container. When the container is in position, lift the corresponding XZ-latch. It locks the container and de-energizes the PDU underneath it. Load the other containers by following the same procedure. When the last container is loaded, lift up the two manual sill latches then check that the two overridable sill latches are up. When the cargo loading is completed, the power can be switched off. CARGO UNLOADING For the cargo unloading, first of all, lower the manual sill latches, then switch the power ON. Lower and hold down the sill latch switch, the overridable sill latches lower. Move the joystick to the "OUT" position, the first container moves out. Lower the XZ-latch locking the next container. The associated PDU is available. Unload the container using the joystick. Do not forget to lower the overridable sill latches before moving the joystick to "OUT". Unload the other containers using the same procedure. When the cargo compartment is empty, switch off the power and lift-up the manual sill latches.

MANUAL LOADING For the manual cargo loading, the compartment preparation is the same as that for cargo loading with the automatic system. The containers are pushed by hand instead of using the PDUs. MANUAL UNLOADING For manual unloading, lower the two manual sill latches, then lower the overridable sill latches using the override handle. The containers are unloaded by hand instead of using the PDUs. At the end of the manual unloading, do not forget to release the overridable sill latches by pushing the handle, then to lift up the manual sill latches.
