Course Description This course prepares students to address the concepts of personnel development as managers. Students learn criteria for developing effective job analysis, appraisal systems, and appropriate career development plans for employees. Other topics include personnel selection, employee compensation, benefits, training, workplace diversity, discipline, employee rights, unions, and management behaviors. University policies are subject to change. Be sure to read the policies at the beginning of each class. Policies may be slightly different depending on the modality in which you attend class. Choose an organization with which you are familiar that is currently unionized. Outline the organization chosen by including the following: Provide brief background information on your chosen organization. Identify legal issues and obstacles that this organization could encounter. 10

Determine which federal, state, or local laws could be broken because of these legal issues and why. Provide recommendations to minimize possible litigation. Write a paper of no more than 700 words discussing the effects of the union on the chosen organization. Address the following questions: What are the organizations benefits of joining a union? What is the unionization process? How does a union bargain? What effects does union bargaining have on the organization? Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines. Discuss the various compensation strategies presented in the video. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of choosing one compensation strategy over the other. Resource: Making a Difference video Watch the Making a Difference video Answer the following questions after watching the video: What are some compensation strategies you have witnessed at previous places of employment? Why must an organization define its culture when deciding on a compensation and benefits plan? What are the repercussions of choosing a compensation and benefits plan that does not align with the organizations culture? Option 1: Functions of a Job Description Identify an operational gap within your current or past employment opportunity. Write a memo to the organizations hiring manager that includes an analysis of no more than 1,400 words. Identify the requirements needed to fulfill this operational gap within the organization. Include the following job description functions in your analysis: Identify responsibilities for the position. List minimum attributes required by the position. o What would the position details be? o What would the duties be? o What are the performance requirements of the position? o What knowledge and skills are required for the position? Determine the organizational positioning of the opportunity and how the opportunity is consistent with the organizations strategic goals. Option 2: Creating a Job Posting for Your Small Business Interview a small-business owner within your community. Address the following questions in your interview: How and when would you determine the need to create a job position within your business? What strategy would use to outline the positions details? What would the duties be? What would the performance requirements for the position be? 15

What preexisting knowledge and skills would be required for the position? Create a job description for the small business using the answers provided during the interview. Include a description of the organization and the rationale for the choices made when constructing the job description for the smallbusiness owner. Option 3: Rewriting a Job Description Locate a job description using a popular website for job seekers. Analyze the job posting you selected. Consider the following criteria: How and when would you determine the need to create a job position within your business? What strategy would use to outline the positions details? What would the duties be? What would the performance requirements for the position be? What preexisting knowledge and skills would be required for the position? Rewrite the job posting chosen. Complete the following in your proposal: Justify your chosen approach. Identify any obstacles or resistant you foresee if the compensation and benefits plan were to be implemented. Individual Growing Your Staff Presentation

You currently work as a human resource management consultant, and you have scheduled a presentation to pitch your organizations value to a company that you have worked for in the past. Prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that will be used to pitch the need for your consultant services. Include the following components in your presentation: Identify the organizations operational gap or need for the human resource management services. Provide any relevant background information within the speaker notes. Determine why a training or employee development plan is needed and why it will fill the organizational gap identified. Provide an outline of the proposed training or employee development plan. Create a performance improvement plan worksheet and integrate it into the presentation. Complete the following in your presentation: Convey the benefits of using your performance improvement plan over more standard, similarly used forms. Explain how your performance improvement plan should be used. Determine what impact your proposed services will have on the organization and its goals. Explain how these changes might affect the companys Equal Employment Opportunity standing and its overall diversity-related issues.

Individual Final Examination

You are allowed one attempt to complete the exam, which is timed and must be completed in 3 hours. Results are auto graded and sent to your instructor.
