To undertake research in line with the Schools research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to the Schools administration/outreach activity. Informal enquiries may be made to: Dr Simao Marques, email: s.marques@qub.ac.uk MAJOR DUTIES: Research: 1. Participate in research activity in aerodynamics, aircraft design and flight mechanics. 2. Continue to build the research activity in conjunction with the relevant Directors of Research and colleagues within the School. 3. Present results of research work at conferences and publish results in appropriate journals, etc. 4. Source and secure external funding from the relevant funding bodies, in collaboration with other School staff, to ensure continued growth of the Schools research profile. 5. Collaborate on original research with colleagues in other institutions. 6. Supervise research students according to university regulations. 7. Develop and contribute to the research strategies of the School and maintain a reputation as an expert in own subject area. 8. Direct, coach and develop research staff, where appropriate. 9. Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget. 10. Senior Lecturer: Act as referee and contribute to peer assessment of research. 11. Manage research activity and lead funding proposals. 12. Develop and maintain a high level international profile in aeronautics research. Teaching: 1. Deliver teaching and assessment activities in the areas of aerodynamics and related areas as assigned by the Director of Education. This will include formal lectures, tutorials, assignments, coursework, project supervision and general student monitoring at undergraduate and postgraduate level. 2. Provide constructive feedback to students. Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching methods and obtaining and analysing feedback. 3. Contribute to the design and revision of course units. 4. Contribute to curriculum development. 5. Routinely communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media. 6. Develop the teaching activities of the School by pursuing new and innovative teaching approaches taking the responsibility for the quality of course units and delivering a range of teaching and assessment activities including lectures, setting/marking coursework, practicals, and fieldwork. 7. Be responsible for the record-keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials. 8. Contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching within the subject, school or faculty, ensuring that course design and delivery comply with the appropriate benchmarks and regulations.

9. Senior Lecturer: Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods. 10. Act as internal and external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate students and programmes. 11. Lead major elements of programme development, including new courses and curricula. 12. Manage major teaching administrative functions such as accreditation and quality enhancement. 13. May act as external examiner for undergraduate programmes or PhD theses. Administration/Contribution to the Community: 1. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure, as far as practicable, that relevant issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner. 2. May sit on major University committees. 3. Contribute to the Schools outreach strategy by designing or delivering Community outreach programmes and developing external links. 4. Contribute where appropriate to the Schools Executive Education Portfolio. 5. Contribute significantly to the development and running of the School/area by taking on appropriate School co-ordinating roles. Such duties may include, for example, Advisor of Studies, QAA Aspect Co-ordinator, Module/Year/Programme Co-ordinator or other recognised official University roles. 6. Senior Lecturer: Act as mentor or appraiser to colleagues, including Teaching Assistants, advising on their personal development and ensuring that that they are meeting the standards required. 7. Develop and lead initiatives in administrative activities such as student recruitment, publicity, web pages. Planning and Organising: 1. Plan and set teaching and research objectives over a number of years. 2. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials. 3. Prepare research proposals for submission to external funding. 4. Senior Lecturer: Be involved in strategic planning for the School/work unit and contribute to the Universitys strategic planning process. 5. Plan and deliver research, teaching and consultancy or similar programmes and ensure that resources are available. 6. Contribute to the management of quality, audit and other external assessments. Resource Management Responsibilities: 1. Provide academic leadership to those working within programme areas, as course leader or equivalent, by for example co-ordinating the work of others to ensure that courses are delivered effectively or organising the work of a team by agreeing objectives and work plans. 2. Develop and manage staff and resources, in support of major research, teaching and administrative activities. 3. Senior Lecturer: Contribute to the overall management of the School/work unit, in areas such as budget and business planning. Internal and External Relationships: 1. Lead and develop internal networks for example by participating in University committee/s. 2. Lead and develop links with external networks, for example, with external examiners and assessors. 3. Develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies, employers, and professional bodies to foster collaboration. ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: 1. Honours Degree or Equivalent in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering. 2. Lecturer: Hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD in aerospace related aerodynamics. 3. Senior Lecturer: Hold a PhD in aerospace related aerodynamics. 4. Lecturer: Minimum of 3 years experience in either research or investigative work in a relevant subject area. 5. Research interests that are sustainable and which complement or enhance existing activities within the school. 6. Record of high quality, relevant, research publications or internal reports, proportional to stage of career.

7. Senior Lecturer: An outstanding research record within an academic or industrial environment. The research record must contribute directly to the research profile of the University as measured in the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework. 8. Sustained track record of research publications of international standard. 9. Sustained record of obtaining research funding, proportional to stage of career. 10. Lecturer: Relevant experience of tutoring and demonstrating at university level. 11. Senior Lecturer: Minimum 5 years experience of teaching (including delivery and assessment) at University. 12. Evidence of Co-ordination of modules and curriculum development. 13. Lecturer: Evidence of appropriate administrative experience. 14. Senior Lecturer: Evidence of appropriate administrative and leadership experience at a strategic level. 15. Ability to advance the research and teaching goals of the School. 16. To strengthen the Schools national and international research networks. 17. Must demonstrate evidence of ability to communicate clearly and effectively to students, academic colleagues and to professional bodies and managers/executives. 18. Ability to provide effective leadership. 19. Evidence of good interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. DESIRABLE CRITERIA: 1. Chartered Engineer. 2. Lecturer: Evidence of sourcing and securing funding from recognised funding bodies. 3. Relevant industrial experience or relevant experience of cooperative work with industry. 4. Sustained record of high quality journal publications, proportional to stage of career. 5. Senior Lecturer: Evidence of leadership in successful collaborative funding proposals. 6. Lecturer: Evidence of development, delivery and assessment of undergraduate courses. 7. Senior Lecturer: Programme leadership including management of major aspects of the teaching delivery.
