November 2009 Next Meeting November 24 Potrero Hill Neighborhood House 953 DeHaro Street (at Southern Heights)

6:45 pm 7:00 pm Social Business Meeting Introductions / Welcome to New Members Police Report Neighborhood News and Updates The New Boosters Website (preview) Starr King Open Space contribution (discussion and vote) Connecting Potrero Hill Open Spaces: A Potrero Greenway? with Shawn Gorman, Brian Liles, Cris Rys
Also at the Boosters meeting on Tuesday, well be discussing and voting on making a major contribution $3,000 to the Starr King Openspace. This is a much larger contribution than the Boosters normally give to anything, and it is a substantial portion of our modest bank account. The Boosters Executive Committee voted to recommend the contribution to the Boosters membership because of the unique nature of the openspace, its collective ownership by the residents of the Hill, and the unique need of the openspace to build its financial reserves at this time.
A big contribution to Starr King Open Space

The Starr King Openspace Board writes: As many of you know, the Starr King Openspace Board elected May 2009 has been active on many fronts. Starr King Openspace now has its own website and Yahoo! Group, and has restored public Board meetings which have been well attended. Community outreach at the Potrero Festival and History Night received enthusiastic response, and new volunteers signed up for work days. An op-ed piece about wildlife and wildflowers appeared in the November Potrero View, following an in-depth story in the October View. The Board is currently planning a community fundraising event for the New Year. One of the Board's biggest projects has been dealing with the proposed development at 1321 De Haro. The Board, the Boosters and other community members showed up in force at the October 15th Planning Commission hearing. The Commission voted to remove the 1321 garage from the Openspace side, and gave directives to project owners and architects to more carefully consider building impacts on the Openspace. The Commission decision and subsequent negotiations may end the 25 year struggle to remove cars from the Openspace, important steps towards bringing protection of the Openspace and residential development into balance.

Presidents Message
During the long, long process of re-zoning the Eastern Neighborhoods, we were reminded constantly of the lack of well-designed, connected open spaces serving our neighborhood. It isnt that there is no land available for open space around here; between the Port (from Pier 64 to Warm Water Cove and Islais Creek), Mission Bay (and its existing plans for parks on the Bay and along Mariposa Street), Caltrans property (near the highways) and the rebuild of Potrero Hills public housing, there are numerous opportunities for new open spaces of all kinds on the Hill, and an almost unlimited potential to link those open spaces in a way that makes the entire Hill more walkable and livable. But once again in our neighborhood, one big challenge is in the planning connecting land owned by different public agencies and some private owners into a shared network of green spaces, trails, paths and streets. Think of the beautiful and inspiring Visitacion Valley Greenway, on a larger scale.
At Tuesdays meeting - A New Potrero Greenway?

All Hill residents jointly own Starr King Openspace; we all share a responsibility for ensuring proper management and care. The Boosters Executive Committee has voted to provide financial support to Starr King Openspace, pending Boosters membership consent. The Boosters financial assistance would help build long term sustainability of this neighborhood resource.

This is a really huge idea; the Visitacion Valley Greenway took 14 years of negotiations, fundraising and construction, and its only six blocks long! But with everything, there is a beginning. Well be presenting a draft of this work at the next Boosters meeting on Tuesday. Its ready for your opinions, and the sketch will certainly change based on your feedback, so come join us!

Thats where the Boosters come in. Booster members Shawn Gorman, Brian Liles, and Cris Rys Shawn during the Plan Potrero Hill workshops, the others on their own sketched independent ideas of connecting Hill open spaces in the past couple of years. Weve tried to combine their similar ideas into a shared vision for future open space on the Hill.

When: Wednesday, December 2, 6-8 pm. Where: Fiore Hall at Golden Gate Disposal and Recycling (Norcal), 900 7th St. @ Berry St. For More Information: showplace.sfplanning.org

This meeting will be a culmination of the work so far, including conceptual designs for the open space sites presented by the Planning Department at earlier meetings. At the workshop, the Department will also ask us to help us prioritize the potential open space projects (theyll have rough cost estimates for everything).

The Showplace Square Open Space Planning workshops are drawing to a close, with the next (final?) meeting on Wednesday, December 2 from 6 to 8 pm.

The Boosters are finally upgrading their website, and part of that will be links to as many Potrero Hill neighborhood associations as we can - neighborhood organizations, block associations, advocacy groups, garden clubs, HOAs, online discussion groups, everybody. Make sure your group(s) are linked on our site! Email your groups info and any online links to president@potreroboosters.org.
