EcoEfficient Optimised

Environmental Performance

As a global leader in rail technology, Bombardier places environmental sustainability firmly at the top of the agenda. EcoEfficient Optimised Environmental Performance forms part of Bombardiers ECO4* product range. ECO4 energy, efficiency, economy and ecology Addressing the growing challenges among operators to reduce Energy consumption, improve Efficiency, protect the Ecology while making sense Economically, ECO4 is the concrete manifestation of Bombardiers declaration The Climate is Right for Trains*. EcoEfficient Optimised Environmental Performance ensures an optimal environmental efficiency and carbon footprint as well as a maximised recyclability and recoverability rate. This is communicated with full transparency through externally certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

The Climate is Right for Trains

To address global challenges and promote sustainable mobility, Bombardier places emphasis on product design with minimal environmental impact as its guiding principle. Our unique Design for Environment (DfE) approach is central to our product responsibility strategy. By considering the potential environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle at the very beginning of the design process, DfE takes an overall approach towards developing EcoEfficient products that contribute to sustainable mobility.

EcoEfficient optimisation through a life cycle perspective

At Bombardier we apply a life cycle perspective to the design of our EcoEfficient products, highlighting the significance of the different design options and illustrating the true overall environmental impact these options have. Life cycle thinking is integrated into the design process at Bombardier. We apply the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology following the ISO 14040 standard to analyse our products environmental impact throughout all stages of their life cycle. The unique transparency that an LCA provides allows us to identify key factors of our design choices and enables us to optimise the environmental efficiency and minimise the carbon footprint of our products.

Eliminating hazardous substances

We are committed to eliminating the presence of hazardous substances as well as related toxic emissions in our EcoEfficient products, providing a safer environment for our customers, passengers and employees. To achieve this goal, we have developed the Bombardier Prohibited and Restricted Substances list enabling our product designers to screen out such substances in their designs, identify them throughout our supply chain and actively work towards eliminating them from our products. The Bombardier Prohibited and Restricted Substances list is available at: http://www.bombardier.com/en/ transportation/sustainability/downloads

Design choices are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) where raw material extraction, manufacturing, operation and the end of life treatment of the product as well as all intervening transport steps form the product system.

Maximising recyclability and recoverability

Recycling is a top priority when designing Bombardier EcoEfficient products. We are continuously increasing the recyclability and recoverability rate of our products by influencing product design at the very early stages of the design process. Bombardiers EcoEfficient products feature materials with high recyclability and a high content of recycled material. We mark plastic components according to ISO 11469 and associated standards and batteries according to the Battery Directive 2006/66/EC, to facilitate identification for recycling.

Transparent communication of environmental efficiency

We communicate the environmental efficiency of our EcoEfficient products through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) with complete transparency, applying the ISO 14025 standard and the guiding principles of the international EPD system. Bombardier EcoEfficient products are delivered with an EPD. An EPD is a communication tool providing relevant, verified and comparable information to meet customer and market requirements.

Material Recycling Energy Recovery Residues/Disposal The EcoEfficient Optimised BOMBARDIER* INNOVIA* ART 200 vehicle operating in the city of Vancouver, Canada, has a carbon footprint of only 9.1 grams per passenger/km through all phases of the vehicles life cycle.

The EcoEfficient Optimised BOMBARDIER* SPACIUM* regional train is projected to achieve a recyclability and recoverability rate of 93 per cent and 98 per cent respectively.

Our EcoEfficient products have a recoverability rate of 95 per cent or more, easily achieving the target value set by the European ELV End of Life Vehicle Directive for 2015. We ensure complete transparency when reporting product recyclability and recoverability rates by applying the ISO 22628 standard. Bombardier EcoEfficient products are also delivered with a Recycling Manual which facilitates the end of life treatment and ensures that the recycling process follows a high standard in terms of quality and safety.

EPDs give an insight into the environmental efficiency of our products through all phases of the product cycle. They follow ISO 14025:2006 as well as the Product Category Rules for Rail Vehicles1 developed by UNIFE 2 in order to ensure complete transparency and comparability. They are validated by an independent external verifier approved by the technical committee of the international EPD system 3. In 1999 Bombardier became the first manufacturer in the rail industry to develop an EPD and since then a number of EPDs have been produced on both vehicle and component level.
