EcoEfficient Optimised
Environmental Performance
As a global leader in rail technology, Bombardier places environmental sustainability firmly at the top of the agenda. EcoEfficient Optimised Environmental Performance forms part of Bombardiers ECO4* product range. ECO4 energy, efficiency, economy and ecology Addressing the growing challenges among operators to reduce Energy consumption, improve Efficiency, protect the Ecology while making sense Economically, ECO4 is the concrete manifestation of Bombardiers declaration The Climate is Right for Trains*. EcoEfficient Optimised Environmental Performance ensures an optimal environmental efficiency and carbon footprint as well as a maximised recyclability and recoverability rate. This is communicated with full transparency through externally certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Design choices are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) where raw material extraction, manufacturing, operation and the end of life treatment of the product as well as all intervening transport steps form the product system.

Material Recycling Energy Recovery Residues/Disposal The EcoEfficient Optimised BOMBARDIER* INNOVIA* ART 200 vehicle operating in the city of Vancouver, Canada, has a carbon footprint of only 9.1 grams per passenger/km through all phases of the vehicles life cycle.
The EcoEfficient Optimised BOMBARDIER* SPACIUM* regional train is projected to achieve a recyclability and recoverability rate of 93 per cent and 98 per cent respectively.
Our EcoEfficient products have a recoverability rate of 95 per cent or more, easily achieving the target value set by the European ELV End of Life Vehicle Directive for 2015. We ensure complete transparency when reporting product recyclability and recoverability rates by applying the ISO 22628 standard. Bombardier EcoEfficient products are also delivered with a Recycling Manual which facilitates the end of life treatment and ensures that the recycling process follows a high standard in terms of quality and safety.
EPDs give an insight into the environmental efficiency of our products through all phases of the product cycle. They follow ISO 14025:2006 as well as the Product Category Rules for Rail Vehicles1 developed by UNIFE 2 in order to ensure complete transparency and comparability. They are validated by an independent external verifier approved by the technical committee of the international EPD system 3. In 1999 Bombardier became the first manufacturer in the rail industry to develop an EPD and since then a number of EPDs have been produced on both vehicle and component level. They are available at: http://www.bombardier.com/ en/transportation/sustainability/downloads
