Zero Leak Slide Gate Damper Specification

Zero Leak Slide Gate Damper Specification

1.0 Scope 1.1 The damper specification detailed here serves as a benchmark for the engineering, design and fabrication of utility grade zero leak slide gate dampers. The Damper manufacturer holds responsibility for the engineering, design and fabrication services necessary for completion of the specified damper. Suggested manufacturer is Fox Equipment, LLC., Jacksonville, Florida. All necessary components, such as actuators and limit switches, will be provided and mounted by the damper manufacturer. The supplier shall test all zero leak slide gate dampers to ensure appropriate operation prior to shipping. 1.3.1 Every damper will be cycled through its full operating stroke, open to closed position, five (5) times. All zero leak slide gate dampers must be tested for seal air system performance. While the fan is in operation, the seal air pressure shall be measured with a suitable pressure gauge that is installed as far as possible from the seal air blower discharge within the seal air chamber. This test should be run for a minimum of five (5) minutes to ensure that the chamber is pressurized to at least 3 w.g. above system operating pressure. Written verification of operational testing will be maintained at the manufacturers facility unless requested by the field in another section of this specification.

Submittal Drawings 2.1 Comprehensive submittal drawings will be completed by the zero leak slide gate damper manufacturer and provided to the customer for review and approval. Fabrication shall start only when submittal drawings have customers final approval. Submittal drawings shall include all system design parameters, accessories and performance data, as well as a bill of material that details major components and interface dimensions.

3.0

Construction 3.1 The client will specify construction materials that are appropriate for the temperature, pressure, corrosive environment and abrasive environment of the system. Damper Frames 3.2.1 Damper frames shall be constructed from structural shapes or formed plates with integrated flanges that are engineered for the system environment as well as construction and transportation loadings. The zero leak slide gate damper unit shall require no external supports or bracing. Stress shall not exceed 60% of yield strength as specified in the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

3.2.2

3.3

Damper Blades 3.3.1 All slide gate damper blades will be manufactured as single thickness solid plate where appropriate and are engineered to limit their deflection to one three hundred and sixtieth (1/360th) of the span at operating conditions using the two sided support theory. The stress at system design conditions shall not exceed 60% of yield strength as specified in AISC steel construction manual. Design shall accommodate differential expansion and contraction of the damper blade. Axial, compressive and bending stress on the blade shall be calculated based upon the design pressure and stall torque of the actuator.

Drive System 3.4.1 All drive system components, including the actuator, shall be sized with a three (3) live load plus a three (3) dead load safety factor minimum. The design torque (including safety factor) of the actuator shall fall within the recommended torque range set forth by the actuator manufacturer.

3.4.2

3.4.3

A suitable drive system shall be used that is capable of operating the blade in a uniform and balanced manner. Chains and sprockets, jackscrews, or pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders are acceptable drive systems. The damper manufacturer shall ensure that each damper is supplied with an actuator that is mounted out of the gas stream. This actuator shall be mounted in shop prior to final inspection so that the manufacturer may link the actuator and operate the damper with all components in place. The strength of the actuator mount in any mode of stress must be adequate to withstand up to 30% of the yield strength based on the necessary actuator torque.

3.4.4

3.5

Seal Air System 3.5.1 The seal air system is supplied by the slide gate manufacturer and consists of a seal air blower, connecting ductwork and blower isolation valve all designed to allow zero leakage flue gas downstream of the closed slide gate blade during operation of the seal air blower. The seal air system includes a blower capable of providing safety factors for both seal air volume and pressure. Pressure will be at least 3.0 w.g. above operating pressure, and volume capacity will be at least 200% of calculated volume at 3.0 w.g. above operating pressure. Seals shall be constructed of metallic material and shall be sweeping in nature. Seals shall be bolted to the damper frame. The seal system is designed to eliminate reverse flexing. The seal system includes three (3) pieces: the seal, the retainer, and the back-up bar. Seal is to be constructed from twenty-four (24)-gauge minimum single ply stainless steel. Retainer is to be constructed from eleven (11)-gauge minimum material. Back-up bar is to be constructed from three-eighths inch (3/8) minimum material.

Welding 4.1 All welding shall be performed in accordance with the American Welding Society Procedure D1.1 ASME Section IX.

Quality Program

5.1

5.2

All engineering, design, material procurement, fabrication and final shipment of the zero leak slide gate damper shall conform to a written Quality Control Program that will be available to the client upon request. The client shall have access to the facility where the fabrication of the zero leak slide gate damper is to be performed. The client will be given at least ten (10) days notice prior to final equipment inspection and testing.
