Runar Brännlund, professor of economics

Runar’s overall field of research includes the economics of the

with green tax reform and the choice of control mechanisms for
environmental policies, including climate policies. Other important

research fields outlined on the following
page.
Bo Kågström, professor of numerical analysis and parallel
computing, director of HPC2N
Bo’s research focuses on the development of effective methods
and software for various computational problems in science and
engineering. One area is linear algebra with applications in control
systems. Another, in collaboration with IBM T.J. Watson Research
Center, is innovative methods, techniques and library software to
make the use of supercomputers with deep memory hierarchies
both simpler and more efficient. New and emerging research
directions include bioinformatics, grid-based systems and inter-
active simulation methods.

Fredrik Almqvist, senior lecturer in inorganic chemistry

Using small molecules, Fredrik is attempting to understand how
certain diseases arise and how bacteria, for example, infect their
host organisms. The substances he obtains can be manipulated
and developed by computer-based design techniques and synthetic
organic chemistry and put to use in practical medical applications.
Examples include projects targeting a new class of substance for
the prevention of blood clots, and compounds affecting the formation
of protein aggregates associated with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s
disease and neuropathic heredofamilial amyloidosis.

Elisabeth Sauer Eriksson, professor of structural biology

Much of Elisabeth’s research is based on X-ray crystallography, a tech-
nique enabling her to study bio-molecules at such high resolutions
that the individual atoms of the molecule can be distinguished. In one
of her projects she studies the protein transthyretin, which for reasons
as yet unknown can undergo structural changes leading to disease.
The project aims at providing a detailed description of these changes
to increase our chances of developing effective medicines that are
able to prevent these changes from occurring in the first place.

Mikael’s research centres on three central aspects of labour market
participation and welfare from both a Swedish and an international
perspective. These are the psychosocial consequences of unemploy-

wage-earning parents, and labour market participation and welfare
among the elderly. His emphasis is on quantitative empirical studies,
e.g. the construction and analysis of surveys and the processing
of large bodies of statistical data.

Sun Nyunt Wai, senior lecturer in medical microbiology

Sun is doing research on how disease causing bacteria are changing
properties and interact with their environment and host organisms.
She is focusing on the bacterium causing Cholera, Vibrio cholerae,
and on different E. coli and has among other things shown how
they can export toxins and other proteins via some blebs (vesicles)
of the outer membrane. The bacteria are global problems with respect
to diarrheal diseases and increased knowledge about their molecular
mechanisms is important for the possibilities to find new ways to
prevent and treat infections.

Peter Sköld, professor of history and Sami social

development and culture
Peter’s research area is historical demography, within which he
has developed a particular interest in Sami population history.
He has, for example, stressed the close relationship between the
cultural understanding of diseases and mortality. Based on an
internationally unique population database, Peter has now begun
an extensive study concerning the consequences of colonization
for Sami settlement, livelihood, family composition, migration,
and health. Peter is also director of the Centre for Sami Research
(CeSam).

List of terms
The academic world uses its own terms and concepts. Many of these date back to the universities
in medieval times and are used internationally. Others are more recent additions to the bounty
of terms and are specific to Swedish universities. Below is a brief list of terms with some of the
most commonly used words.
