We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics: 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. A safe place to learn and grow 3. A healthy start and healthy future 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation 5. A chance to give back to peers and community.

We are pleased to announce that there are currently 20 students at Campus Community who are seeing a mentor at least once a week. Mentors supply the supportive, caring, one-to-one adult interaction that many children need to thrive. The mentoring relationship may support the mentees academic or social growth and development. We are looking for adults, especially males, who are able to commit to 30 minutes to an hour, once a week for the remainder of the school year. Through our partnership with Connecting Generations, there is no charge for the training, background screenings or preliminary interviews required to volunteer to be a mentor. The positive impact on both the mentor and the mentee is beyond measure. Contact Gail Garner at 302-736-0403 ext 108 for more information and to complete an application. If you wish to get an electronic copy of the application, send an email to gail.garner@ccs.k12.de.us.

Student Spotlight

Grace Kennedy
Grace has been a student at Campus Community School since eighth grade. Her parents were so pleased with her brothers experience at CCS that they wanted Grace to attend as well. She says, Its cool. If she were able to give one piece of advice to her 8th grade self, Grace would say, It doesnt matter what other people think. If they dont want to be your friends then, oh well, get over it. This is in perfect alignment to her personal motto, It doesnt matter what people think, stick with those who support your efforts. Grace plans to attend the University of Delaware to major in Athletic Training. She gained experience this year as an intern with the athletic department at Wesley College. She shines in both academics and leadership. Currently serving as class president, Grace has also been SGA Secretary, served on the Mock Trial Team, and is a member of the Odyssey of the Mind Team this year. Her skills have been recognized in a Coachs Award for soccer and a DCAS Scholarship for Reading scores.

Community Partner Spotlight

Christa Cooper & Sky Phillips of the WDSD Morning Crew visit with a Delaware Friend.

Crazy, quirky, curious, sometimes silly, sometimes ditzythat would be Christa Cooper from the WDSD Morning Crew. Her side kick, Leah Rizzo is the quieter of the two, but you know what they say about the quiet ones. Their antics are the source of a wise and well-informed chuckle from news anchor Phil Feliceangeli. The sum total of this mayhem, and the task of keeping everyone in line falls to Sky Phillips, who often fails wonderfully at keeping everyone on task and focused, much to the enjoyment of their listeners. As a community partner, there is no finer group of people. They are committed to giving back to the community; total involvement in many projects to improve and provide for the needs of Delaware residents. Without hesitation, they have worked with the Food Bank of Delaware on an annual basis to provide meals for those in need. They joined with, and expanded Operation Christmas Wish to include hundreds of children and their families. One thing that you will notice with the Morning Crew is the amount of joy and caring they have for their listeners.... Sky is known for doing last minute partnerships that explode in positive ways. He believes that the microphone was put in his hand for a reason and it was to make others aware of what's really going on!

Volunteer Spotlight

Can you match the parent to the students?

She is the mother of two, handsome boys at Campus Community School, one in Kindergarten, and one in second grade. On any given day, you might meet this enthusiastic volunteer in the office, the cafeteria, or a classroom. She volunteers because she is available and able to do so. She exemplifies the spirit of teamwork that makes Campus a true Community. When asked, Why Campus? she responds with three points of accolade. 1) The feeling and spirit of teamwork that permeates the school, 2) The goal of every teacher to meet the individual needs of every student, and 3) The philosophy of honoring each students unique way of learning. This volunteer relates that, given the opportunity to choose, she decided to stay in this area because of her positive experiences at Campus. She feels the needs of her two, young boys have

Semester of Service
Campus Community School staff and students are about to embark on a journey of service together. Our Semester of Service begins on Martin Luther King Day, January 21, and concludes on Earth Day, April 22. This will be an exciting time for all students as we will be beta testing the new academic curriculum created for the Food Bank of Delaware by students at Wesley College. Students will be involved in a series of 5 focused, themed food drives during this time. Each drive will be preceded by an instructional component consisting of a minimum of 2 lessons. The goal is to make a food drive more than an opportunity to clean out the cupboard. Students and families will be asked to make thoughtful contributions and Feed them as you would your own. Grades K-1, Grades 2-3, Grades 4-5, and Grades 6-8 will each look at the concept of hunger from a different perspective, and then sponsor a themed food drive based on that perspective. Look for more details on each food drive as soon as they are scheduled. The fifth food drive is a Dover Community-wide event involving CCS, Wesley College, Delaware State University, the Downtown Dover Partnership, the WDSD Morning Crew, and the Food Bank of Delaware. In addition to a neighborhood food collection, the food Bank will be setting up a remote distribution site, and WDSD will be broadcasting live from CCS. For more information, or to get involved, please contact Gail Garner.
