The Earths Exterior The Earths Exterior is made up of land masses and water bodies.

A land mass is a large area of land and is broken up into continents and islands. There are seven continents Go to page 52 in the Longman Caribbean Atlas and list them below 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________

An island is a land mass smaller than a continent and surrounded by water. Name 5 islands in the Caribbean 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ___________________ ___________________ ___________________ ___________________ ___________________

Landforms are natural features of the landscape; natural physical features of the Earth's surface, for example, valleys, plateaus, mountains, plains and hills. Lands that are very high above sea level are called highlands and lands that are below sea level are called lowlands. There are different types of Highlands e.g. hills and mountains. Hills are highlands that do not usually rise above 500 metres. Mountains rise above 1000 metres; therefore, a mountain is higher than a hill. Each continent has landforms and water bodies. Locate the highest mountain and the longest river in each continent and write the height and the length of the features Continent Highest Mountain Longest River

Look at a map of Jamaica and locate a mountain in St. Andrew ________________________________ There are many different types of lowland e.g. valleys and plain. Plains and valleys do not rise above 150 metres and also differ in sizes. Plains are very large areas of level or flat land and extend from the coast to the bottom of a hill or mountain. Valleys are lowlands between hills and mountains. Name three oceans ____________________________________________________ A river is a natural water course, usually fresh water, flowing toward an ocean, lake, sea or another river. A lake is a standing body of water and includes natural lakes (formed by glaciers, ox bows in rivers or other natural phenomena) and impoundments or human-made lakes such as reservoirs and farm ponds. a usually extensive land area having a relatively level surface raised sharply above adjacent land on at least one side

In geology and earth science, a plateau ( /plto/ or /plto/; plural plateaus or rarely plateaux), also called a high plain or tableland, is an area of highland, usually consisting of relatively flat terrain.

Plateaus can be formed by a number of processes, including upwelling of volcanic magma, extrusion of lava, and erosion by water and glaciers. Magma rises from the mantle causing the ground to swell upward, in this way large, flat areas of rock are uplifted. Plateaus can also be built up by lava spreading outward from cracks and weak areas in the crust. Plateaus can also be formed by the erosional processes of glaciers on mountain ranges, leaving them sitting between the mountain ranges. Water can also erode mountains and other landforms down into plateaus. Plateaus are classified according to their surrounding environment.

Intermontane plateaus are the highest in the world, bordered by mountains. The Tibetan Plateau is one such plateau. Piedmont plateaus are bordered on one side by mountains and on the other by a plain or sea. Continental plateaus are bordered on all sides by the plains or seas, forming away from mountains. Volcanic plateaus are produced by volcanic activity. The Columbia Plateau in the northwestern United States of America is one such plateau. Dissected plateaus are highly eroded plateaus cut by rivers and broken by deep narrow valleys.
