may never have met but for our
involvement in ethical and envi
ronmental projects. We havent
just saved carbon by sharing an
oven, or avoided sweatshops by
organising clothes swaps, but we
also gained some epic memories

festivals arent often the greenest
of places, but some are far better
than others. Glastonbury is the
largest open air music and arts
festival in the world, with a huge
piopoition of its piofits going to

Greenman and Latitude, try to

promote sustainability, while oth

els have made us the most con
gested country in Europe; all this
has a considerable environmental
impact, with transport currently
being responsible for 53% of ni
trogen oxide emissions, 74% of
carbon monoxide, and 15% of

rather that we should all ques

things, its important to consider
the packaging that comes with
it. Buying loose fruit and vegeta
bles and opting for larger cartons
to share with friends instead of
buying lots of individual ones can
help reduce the amount that gets

Be aware of storage; opening
salad bags before putting them
in the fridge and putting veg in

beensourcedfromrenewablesand
othergreentariffsarenowavail
able from a number of different
power companies, although usu

However, while green tariffs do

tricity, there is no guarantee that
your money will actually go into
funding the expansion of renew

make much of a difference. But

If making a small change is not
enough, then you can do more.
Through making connections,
campaigning and protesting, dra
matic changes can be made, even
withonlylimitedresourcesandfew
people. Two years ago, for exam
ple, People & Planet managed to
winbackthejobsof1800Hondu
ranworkerswithfullunionrights
after they had been dismissed for
establishingatradeunionthrough
aninternationalboycott.Thisisone
example of small groups of grass
rootscampaignershavingamajor
positiveeffect.
