MAE Capstone Design Project Introduction and Overview

Prof. Jeremy Lalibert MAE Capstone Project Coordinator jlaliber@mae.carleton.ca

Winter 2012

Outline
Background and administrative information Learning Objectives Project list and sign-up process Individual project summaries and discussion

Capstone Project Background

Based on Cranfield University Group Design Project Originally two projects (1992)
Aircraft and Spacecraft

Success of team-style projects led to adoption across Department (early 2000s) Evolved into multi-year projects often with external collaborators and links to graduate research Widely emulated (e.g. Ryerson, RMC, Ecole Poly.)

Administrative Info
Capstone Project Coordinator
Prof. Jeremy Lalibert (jlaliber@mae.carleton.ca) Ext 1128, rm 3148ME

Learning Objectives
Provide a realistic design learning environment to expose students to the complexities of modern engineering design processes, tools and practices.

Each project has its own corporate approach dictated by the industry-specific design process

MAE Capstone Design Project

Total of 8 projects aligned to programs/streams Aerospace (AERO 4907A, B, C)
Fixed Wing UAV, Helicopter UAV and Spacecraft

Mechanical (MECH 4907A, B, C)

Gas turbine, FSAE Hybrid and CUSP

Biomedical-Mechanical (MECH 4917A)

Crash test dummy

Sustainable and Renewable Energy (SREE 4907A)

High efficiency house

Sign up Process
Web-based sign-up (open 26 March-27 April)
Link to be posted on MAE website and emailed to 3rd year, 4th year and co-op mailing lists Select 1st, 2nd, 3rd preference

Sign-up even if you might be on co-op

In May-June you can decline and postpone to next year

Assignments based on:

Degree program, project needs, scheduling, time of sign-up, volunteer experience Each project will be restricted first to those students in that specific program/stream then opened up if space/schedule permits

Selection Website and Assignment Process

Login using Connect userid/password Time stamped entries List will be posted and students assigned to specific project sections by Deans Office when registration opens up in June

Undergraduate Directed Study MAAE 4917 (0.5 credit)

For students seeking additional research experience Calendar description:
Student carries out a study, analysis, and solution of an engineering problem. Results presented in the form of a written report. Carried out under the close supervision of a faculty member. Intended for students interested in pursuing graduate studies. Requires supervising faculty member and proposal from student. Prerequisite: permission of the Department and completion of, or concurrent registration in, AERO 4907 or MECH 4907.

Approach individual faculty in your area of interest first

Carleton University Fixed Wing UAV Project

Prof. Jeremy Lalibert jlaliber@mae.carleton.ca http://uav.mae.carleton.ca

What is a UAV?
Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle
No on-board pilot
Controlled remotely or autonomously

Can be very large or very small May be less expensive than a piloted aircraft Dull, dirty, dangerous jobs
