Fundamental Stick Techniques of the Kukishinden Tradition

Kukishinden Ryu Hanbo


Postures Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae Otonashi No Kamae Munen Muso No Kamae (two-hand, in front) (two-hand, behind) (walking stick position)

1. Sayu Kuridashi Gata


(a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step (forward or back) and pivot while sliding the hanbo through the hands to strike around at the opponent with the extended end. Strike 8 ways: high, middle, low, straight down at the head and straight up at the groin. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) KASUMI UCHI (punch defence & striking) Against a right punch. Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back and around while blocking with the right end of the hanbo. Opponent continues by stepping in with left punch. Defender steps to left side and pivots while releasing left grip to strike out (onehanded) at opponents head. KOSHI ORI (punch defence & limb control) Against a right punch. Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) steps to the right side (internally) and pivots while striking into the ribs with the left end of the hanbo (one-handed) and catching the punching arm with his left hand, then quickly crossing the hanbo over and on top of the captured arm, the opponent will be forced backward and down to the ground. Defender then pressures captured arm across own knee and/or strikes with the hanbo.

2. Sayu Uchiage Gata


(a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae)

BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Pivot back 45 degrees, while sliding the stick through the hands to strike under and up at the target with the extended end. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST BOKKEN With your partner striking straight down at the head pivot back around while striking up into the hands. F.A.D. (with another strike or kick). AGAINST A RIGHT-HAND KNIFE THRUST Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back 45 degrees while striking under and up into the attacking hand with the left end of the hanbo, then turns the hanbo over in the left hand into a two-hand sword grip to strike down on the knife arm. F.A.D.

3. Sayu Hanten Uchi Gata


(a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step to the side while turning the stick over in one hand into a two-hand sword grip to strike down at the target with the extended end. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN With your partner striking straight down at the head, evade to the left side and release the left hand grip to strike up into the opponents hands, then quickly step in with the right foot and take the hanbo down and around to strike across the opponents chest area with a 2-hand sword grip. F.A.D. AGAINST A BOKKEN Against a straight thrust at the body, evade sideways while striking down onto the bokken blade, then quickly move into opponent to extend and thrust the same end of the hanbo at the head. F.A.D.

4. Sayu Kaeshi Uchi Gata


(a one-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION

Step sideways while releasing the grip of one hand to extend the hanbo and strike around at the opponents body. Strike high, middle and low. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) TUKE IRI - AGAINST A RIGHT HAND KNIFE THRUST Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) steps to the left side (externally) and pivots while striking into the ribs with the right end of the hanbo (one-handed) and catching the knife arm with his right hand, then quickly crossing the hanbo over and on top of the captured arm, the opponent will be forced forward and down to ground. F.A.D. KICK DEFENCE Against a kick, defender (Hirai Ichimonji) evades to the inside while catching the attacking leg with the left end of the hanbo, then steps in and throws the opponent over and down to strike by extending the hanbo in one hand. F.A.D.

5. Sayu Mawashi Uchi Gata


(a one-handed technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step diagonally forward while twisting and releasing the hanbo in one hand to strike over and down at opponents head with an extended one-hand grip. THEN EXERCISE THESE DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN Against a thrust to the body, step diagonally back while striking down at bokken woth a two-hand deflection, then quickly move into the opponent to strike over and down at the head with the inside hand. F.A.D. AGAINST A KICK Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back and around while twisting and releasing the hanbo to strike down on the attacking leg, with an extended one-hand strike, then move in with a two-hand thrust. F.A.D.

6. Taguri Tsuki Kata


(a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step sideways while extending the hanbo to thrust into the attackers body. Thrust high, middle and low.

THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN With your partner striking straight down, evade sideways or diagonally forward while turning hanbo over in a blocking motion, then thrust at the opponent. F.A.D. AGAINST A DOUBLE LAPEL GRAB Against a double lapel grab, defender (Hirai Ichimonji) thrusts the end of the hanbo up under the opponents chin, then raises the hanbo up into both wrists to break the opponents grip, then step forward and push the hanbo against the opponents chest to knock him back and away.

7. Morote Shiho Uke Gata


(two-hand blocking techniques from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THESE INTRODUCTIONS 1. Step (forward and back) with a two-hand high-section horizontal block. 2. Step (forward and back) with a two-hand low-section horizontal block. 3. Step diagonally forward (right & left) and pivot slightly, with a two-hand vertical block. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN 1. Against a downward strike, step forward with a high-section horizontal block, then kick. 2. Against a diagonal strike up across the body, step back with a low-section block, then release one hand to strike over and down, then onto the opponents hands. 3. Against a diagonal strike down across the body, step in harmony with the direction of the attack with a high-section diagonal block, then strike head with butt, and kick. FINALLY, FREE FORM DEFENCES AGAINST WEAPON ATTACKS (Instructor should nominate attacks)

8. Hoshi Furi Gata


(a one-hand technique from Munen Muso No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION

1. Striking over & down at opponent. 2. Striking straight up at opponent. 3. Striking around at opponent. 4. Dropping to half-kneel to strike around. THEN EXERCISE THIS SOLO PRACTICE FORM Strike straight up to the left with a pivot. Step and pivot with back-hand horizontal strike to the right. Step and pivot with diagonal downward strike across body to the left. Step and pivot with diagonal upward strike across body to the right. Pivot around to the right with diagonal downward strike to rear.

FINALLY, FREE FORM DEFENCES AGAINST UNARMED ATTACKS (Instructor should nominate kick, punch, grab etc.)

9. Katate Uchi Gata


(a one-hand technique from munen Muso No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXCERCISE THESE INTRODUCTIONS From Munen Muso No Kamae, step to the side and pivot while: 1. Striking over & down at opponent 2. Striking straight up at opponent 3. Striking around at opponent 4. Dropping to half-kneel to strike around THEN EXCERCISE THESE DEFENSES AGAINST A BOKKEN (2+2 TIMES RIGHT & LEFT) With your partner striking straight down from Munen Muso No Kamae, evade to side and pivot while: 1. Striking over & down onto bokken blade - F.A.D. 2. Striking straight up into bokken blade - F.A.D. 3. Striking straight up into opponents groin - F.A.D. 4. Striking around at opponents head - F.A.D. 5. Striking around at opponents knee from a half-kneel posture - F.A.D.

10. Grabbing Defence


KATATE DORI - GRAB DEFENCE Opponent steps forward and grabs defenders right wrist with left hand (defender in Hira Ichimonji No Kamae). Defender immediately positions the right end of the hanbo on top of the opponents wrist. Opponent then steps in with left punch at head Defender steps diagonally back, while blocking/striking up into punching arm with the left end of the hanbo, then feeling the opponents grip release, the defender quickly changes feet to step in with the right foot and strike in the ribs with the right end of the weapon. BEAR-HUG DEFENCE Against a bear hug, pressure across opponents hands, stomp, then drop and raise both arms, then quickly release (one grip on the hanbo)and move around beside opponent while positioning hanbo across ribs to apply pressure. Then drop to a half-kneel and throw opponent over and down to the ground. MAWASHI DORI - GRAB & PUNCH DEFENCE Against an attempted right grab. Defender (Hira Ichimonji) pivots back and around while blocking with the right end of the hanbo (two-handed) Opponent retreats slightly and defender resumes Hira Ichimonji No Kamae. Opponent then steps in with left punch Defender steps diagonally forward to the left while blocking the punch with the left end of the hanbo (two-handed), then spirals the attacking arm down and around to turn the opponent and break balance, then slides and extends the hanbo through the hands to thrust into the opponents back. Variation This defence and counter-attack can be performed (with reverse angling) by first blocking the punches EXTERNALLY, then thrusting into chest area.

Kukishinden Ryu Shoden No Henka Kata


Hanbo Jutsu against Tanto
(Tori: Kata Yaburi No Kamae)

1. Kata Te Uchi
Uke: Left mune dori, tsuki to heart or overhead jodan strike (reverse grip)

Tori: 45 degree back right striking both hoshi by raising hanbo straight upwards. Release left hand then two handed jodan strike or slide strike through right hand to jodan. Henka Strike to Ukes right hoshi from underneath, control lapel grab by placing hanbo on top of Ukes left hand and crossing your arms underneath (Ude Garami).

2. Kao Kudaki
Uke: Left Ichimonji, tanto on hip, step forward tsuki.

Tori: Step to left, release left hand and strike to Ukes wrist with two handed gri (left hand on bottom). Return other end of hanbo to left hand and step forward left leg, sliding hanbothrough your right hand to strike Ukes men. Henka 1 Right end of hanbo to Ukes throat, push down 45 degrees to take down, strike to open target. Henka 2 Continue pressure down on wrist to pin wrist to Ukes thigh, walk through to takeUke down locking Ukes hip.

3. Nagare Dori
Uke: Left Ichimonji, tanto on hip, step forward tsuki.

Tori: Step 45 degrees forward right striking with hanbo to men (right end high, left end 45 degrees across Ukes body blocking at hoshi to control tanto). Left hand secures Ukes right wrist to apply koshi ori (right hand on Ukes wrist, left end of hanbo rear of Ukes hip. Pressure down to throw).

4. Kasumi Gake
Uke: Left Ichimonji, tanto on hip, step forward tsuki.

Tori: Steps to left allowing right foot to turn and face other direction, releasing right hand and strike with hanbo to Ukes face (hanbo under Ukes arm). Right hand grabs wrist, Tsuki Iri (free end of hanbo 45 degrees across Ukes waist, pressure on tricep). Walk forward to take down.

5. Iki Chigae
Uke and Tori walking towards each other: Uke: Tanto behind back in right hand. When Tori is just past, turns on right foot and tsuki to kidneys, palm up and forearm movig in semi-circle with hoshi as a fixed point.

Tori: Turns to catch with same motion as Uke (thumb on top of wrist/hand). Swings right end of hanbo up and under Ukes arm to strike men. Omote gyaku to take down. Henka Strike to men, then tsuki iri.

6. Ate Kaeshi
Uke: Left mune dori, tsuki to heart or overhead jodan strike (reverse grip)

Tori: Drops to right knee, thrusting right end of hanbo into solar plexus. Henka Slam hanbo down onto Ukes lead foot, kick to wrist to clear knife.

7. Saka Otoshi
Uke: Left mune dori, tsuki to heart or overhead jodan strike (reverse grip)

Tori: Steps to left, slide strike to bottom of Ukes wrist with right end of hanbo. Sanshin motion step to strike the top of Ukes wrist with left end of hanbo, not releasing the original grip. Cross step passing left end of hanbo across the front of Ukes neck. Reach behind Ukes neck with your right hand, crossing forearms and grip the left end of the hanbo to choke Uke, placing your forehead on the back of Ukes head pressing forward.
