Ligne Roset
A Legacy of Creation
Ligne Roset is the story of a family business started over 150 years ago. The story of this family legacy speaks volumes about the high standards and the passion with which Michel and Pierre Roset run the business-respecting what was passed down to them, but endeavoring to go even further and leave their mark. Text Constance Rubini Photos Vincent Leroux
Since its inception, Ligne Roset has been located in the countryside of Ain, in the Bugey region.

Rosets Origins In 1860, Antoine Roset created a small factory of parasol shafts in Oussiat, in the department of Ain. The business grew and, in 1892, he purchased a property on the banks of the Brivaz river in order to install paddle wheels to chop his wood. By then, he employed thirty workers. However, just as the company was taking off, it fell victim to the changes in fashion, as women, at the turn of the century, ceased to carry parasols. Antoine Roset bounced back by using his wood turners to design chair legs and bars. This heralded the beginning of the furniture company, marked by
the strong personality of Marie-Victorine, who succeeded her deceased husband in 1893 and passed on the reigns to their son Emile Roset (18821946) in the 1910s. Until the end of the 1930s, the company Etablissements Veuve A. Roset manufactured colonnade chairs, cane chairs and reproduction period chairs. In 1936, the company produced its first upholstered chairs, primarily in leather. Emile died shortly after the war, in 1946, and his son Jean inherited the company. During this period of reconstruction, the business, which now employed around fifty workers, quickly turned industrial by developing contract furniture.

Design, Manufacture, Distribution Jean Roset was a man ahead of his time. Amidst a quickly evolving world, he aspired to approach designers. He collaborated with architects and designers to invigorate his line of upholstery. At the Lyon fair in 1954, he was introduced to designer Michel Ducaroy. This meeting revolutionized his business. Roset brought him on-board as a freelancer before hiring him as a full-time employee of the company in 1960. In the spirit of integrating the various areas of the business, Jean Roset put in place all he could to support Ducaroy in his work. A design department and prototyping studio were created for Ducaroy as he researched the best technical solutions for the creation of his pieces.
During a time when all upholsteryhad a solid frame, Michel Ducaroy was developing seats made entirely of foam, allowing for real ergonomic progress. The factory in Briord became dedicated to creating these seats by developing machines for cutting foam, stretching, and padding. A contemporary of designers such as Pierre Paulin or Olivier Mourgue, Ducaroy was an unassuming creator, a designer through and through, and one of the driving forces of French innovation. In 1973, his new creation, Togo, whose look invokes comfort and tenderness, won the Ren-Gabriel prize, awarded each year to the most innovative furniture. Though its visual comfort seems simple and obvious, Togo is the result of sophisticated expertise. Its struc-

ture, which combines three foams of various densities, is upholstered with a generously quilted cover. Its tapestry is the result of the unique and precise movements that shape its identifiable folds. Togo, whose 40th year of production we are celebrating this year, is perhaps Ligne Rosets most recognizable piece. Looking for way to broadcast this creation, Jean Roset, a visionary, appealed to Roux Sgula of the Jacques Sgula agency. A few memorable television commercials expressed the freedom of this new modernity and popularized these early foam creations. The great achievement of Jean Roset was that he had the intuition and intelligence to integrate creation, production and distribution. A distribution network was actualized in 1973 with the opening of the first two stores. With the design of a logo, the Ligne Roset brand name was formally created and placed on store fronts. Today, Roset counts 760 retail outlets across the world, towards which it exports 70% of its production. At the foot of the mountains Ligne Roset began placing importance on environmental responsibility as early as the 1970s. Waste is sorted and put to use. At its cabinet factory, for instance, wood scraps are used to heat the almost 500,000 sq. ft. facility. Leather scraps from the Briord factory are sold to be recycled and used by the shoe industry, and leftover foam is recycled into agglomerate foam. The finished pieces produced by Roset are themselves conceived for easy disassembly in order to facilitate their recycling. Furthermore, Pierre Roset is a member of a steering committee on the recycling of home furnishing products. For him, sustainable development goes handin-hand with effective management and financial objectives. As such, the company has made investments, in order to acquire or develop programs and machines that ration energy expenditures, optimize the use of materials, and avoid waste. The effects of these decisions will be felt only in the long term, but that frightens nobody in this family business. Likewise, when Ligne Roset started the production of furniture in 1973 to complete the collection of seating in its new stores, the company hired a chemist to work on possible innovations in the treatments of surfaces, material uses and their application. As a result, the company began to use varnishes without solvents and quick-dry glosses with ultraviolet coatings that save time, manpower, and energy. These products cost more, but are used more sparingly and are more resilient. Their primary virtue, however, was their improvement of working conditions. As such, the company, with the help of ergonomists, carries out programs to limit handling, avoid repetitive movements, and promote versatility among the workers, innovations that create a flexible work environment equally suitable to the needs of production. Because the production line requires the transportation from one factory to another, the five production sites are within proximity to each other. For the production of bedroom, living room, and office furniture, Saint Jean le Vieux does the manufacturing; the surface treatments are carried out at Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey, and the furniture is then returned to Saint Jean le Vieux for assembly and shipment. As for the seating, it is produced in Briord, in a large workshop where the majority of the work is done by hand. Two upholsterers are in charge of training new employees, teaching the precise movements and dexterity necessary for the craft. The interns go through one year of training that focuses on workmanship and guarantees the quality of the products. Bourgoin-Jallieu and Saint-Georges de Reneins are the other two sites that house seamstresses. A skilled workforce preserves the know-how that is the cornerstone of the business. With the exception of a few items contracted out, Ligne Roset furniture is created deep in the French countryside, at the foot of the Bugey mountains.

Commitment to Design
Interview with Chantal Hamide
Chantal Hamaide is the editorin-chief of Intramuros Magazine. She has long observed the creative scene, both in France and throughout the world. Chantal, is there a particularly French approach to furniture? France is very attached to the tradi-tion of furniture: more than 25 regional styles have been identified. In France, following the experimentation with Art Nouveau, the Exposition des Arts Dcoratifs in 1925 initiated a new approach to furniture. Emile Ruhlmann was able to find equilibrium between a structural perspective and the use of precious woods. Meanwhile, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier claimed their affiliation to the modernist movement and generated solutions for French furniture that were more industrial and democratic. During the Post-War era, emerging during the Salon des Arts Mnager were Ren Caillette, Joseph Andr Motte, Pierre Garriche, and Pierre Paulin, who was later entrusted with furnishing the private apartments of President Georges Pompidou at the Elyse Palace. The family model is now even more relevant to the philosophy of the company in order to maintain its supply of high-end products. Ligne Rosets financial autonomy grants them independence, benefitting the creativity of their collections. Their loyal collaboration with two generations of French designers has made them promoters of French design, whose quality they guarantee, and for which they provide international visibility. What about Ligne Rosets commitment with regards to young designers? Young emerging talent is monitored thanks to the help of the VIA (Valorisation de lInnovation dans lAmeublement) a genuine holding tank of French design, as well as through an annual competition offered to students and young professionals. The success of the collections designed by Pagnon & Pelhatre, Eric Jourdan, Franois Bauchet, Didier Gomez, bears the French touch that Ligne Roset promotes. Reaching out to the next generation Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Inga Semp, Philippe Nigro is in line with the companys commitment to design. Designers have thus found an attentive ear in this business that invests 4% of its yearly sales in innovation. We are convinced that by developing unique creations with French designers over the long term, we are guaranteeing the durability of our business, emphasizes Michel Roset. And what about collaboration with foreign designers? Ligne Roset collaborates closely with them as well, as is evident in the many pieces of the collection created by both established and young designers of diverse origins.
Interview Thomas Edelmann
Chantal Hamaide
There is no theme more international than design for it feeds off exchange. This is why the bilingual journal Intramuros, published in French and English, is rightfully regarded as a design magazine of international scale. The cover pages that it dedicates to portraits of designers are a sign of the journals recognition. But it also offers a particularly French perspective on the world of design. After having started the magazine, which has remained independent since its creation in 1985, journalist Chantal Hamaide later became its editor-in-chief and manager. If she sometimes approaches design from a commercial angle, she is first and foremost interested in all of its diverse cultural aspects. Chantal Hamaide is the appointed journalist for French design, she is an active participant on numerous judges panels, and has organized various exhibitions, conferences and events on current issues in design. In 2000, Laurent Fabius, then the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, awarded her the Legion of Honor.
Looking at French influences as they specifically relate to Ligne Roset, how do they play out in favor of its products? Ligne Roset upholds a French tradition of quality manufacturing that is in continuation with the culture of decorative arts, cabinetmakers and upholsterers. At Ligne Roset, particular care is given to the materials and to the industrial capabilities of the business.

Philippe Nigro continued his love for repetition and variation on a basic shape with the creation of Cuts, a stackable system that plays with concepts of straight lines and angles. The double-sided piece has an irregularly-cut
shape, but its depth remains the same, enabling multiple modules to be placed side-by-side. Reverse or ip it for different shapes in varying ways. Stack or place end-to-end to create bookcases to your desired dimensions. It comes in

Service
Upholstery fabrics, leather, and good advice. We will be happy to assist you.
Make your innermost wishes a reality. Ligne Roset offers you a wide selection of upholstery for designing your living space according to your individual tastes and needs. We have more than 500 options with different fabric blends, colors and features; whether it is appearance, style, durability, or a specic kind of care you are looking for. Flat-weave cottons, jacquards, velours, wool fabrics and microbers in a rainbow of shades, both understated and colorful, are all carefully selected, tested and nished by Ligne Roset. Not to be overlooked are our high-quality leathers from European tanneries. When choosing the right upholstery for your new furniture, why not consult our knowledgeable sales staff for advice? They will see to it that your investment brings you pleasure for many years and will provide practical tips on the use and durability of the upholstery. This is especially important if you have children or pets, or if you are dealing with special lighting conditions and habitual use. Remember that Ligne Roset favors a pleasantly soft nish with a slight sheen for its upholstery. That is why the upholstery on many of our pieces is rather loose and not meant to t tightly. The resulting folds that form, which may be more or less pronounced depending on the model, are intentional and make up the personality of the furniture. To ensure years of enjoyment from your Ligne Roset upholstery, we recommend following the care instructions included with each model. They contain further tips on the upholstery and its care, spot removal and cleaning.
Live according to your taste. Ligne Roset will indulge it whatever it takes!
It is our ongoing mission to complement our impressive collection with comprehensive service, going beyond what it takes to satisfy you.
