Year of Faith
The goal of our Lenten journey is to renew and deepen our relationship with God. May we seek to grow stronger spiritually by resisting temptation and by repenting of our sins. As we turn away from sin, we will come to love the Lord more fully. That love will flow from us into all aspects of our lives and subsequently affect the lives of others Welcome New Families to Christ the King Parish! Pope Benedict XVI on Music The Primacy of Singing THE IMPORTANCE of music in biblical religion is shown very simply by the fact that the verb to sing (with related words such as song, and. so forth) is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible. It occurs309 times in the Old Testament and thirty-six in the New. When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not enough. Areas of his existence are awakened that spontaneously turn into song. Indeed, mans own being is insufficient for what he has to express, and so he in-vites the whole of creation to become a song with him: Awake, my soul! Awake, 0 harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I will give thanks to you, 0 Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithful-ness to the clouds (Ps 57:8f.). We find the first mention of singing in the Bible after the crossing of the Red Sea. Israel has now been definitively delivered from slavery. In a desperate situation, it has had an overwhelming experi-ence of Gods saving power. Just as Moses as a baby was taken from the Nile and only then really received the gift of life, so Israel now feels as if it has been, so to speak, taken out of the water: it is free, newly endowed with the gift of itself from Gods own hands. In the biblical ac-count, the peoples reaction to the foundational event of salvation is described in this sentence: [T]hey believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses (Ex 14:31). But then follows a second reaction, which soars up from the first with elemental force: "Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord (i 5: i). Year by year, at the Easter Vigil, Christians join in the singing of this song. They sing it in a new way as their song, because they know that they have been taken out of the water by Gods power, set free by God for authentic life. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 136] The singing of the Church comes ultimately out of love. It is the utter depth of love that produces the singing. Cantare amantis est, says St. Augustine, singing is a lovers thing. In so saying, we come again to the trinitarian interpretation of Church music. The Holy Spirit is love, and it is he who produces the singing. He is the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit who draws us into love for Christ and so leads to the Father. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 142] In liturgical music, based as it is on biblical faith, there is, therefore, a clear dominance of the Word; this music is a higher form of proclama-tion. Ultimately, it rises up out of the love that responds to Gods love made flesh in Christ, the love that for us went unto death. After the Resurrection, the Cross is by no means a thing of the past, and so this love is always marked by pain at the hiddenness of God, by the cry that rises up from the depths of anguish, Kyrie eleison, by hope and by supplication. But it also has the privilege, by anticipation, of experiencing the reality of the Resur-rection, and so it brings with it the joy of being loved, that gladness of heart that Haydn said came upon him when he set liturgical texts to music. Thus the relation of liturgical music to logos means, first of all, simply its relation to words. That is why singing in the liturgy has priority over instrumental music, though it does not in any way exclude it. It goes without saying that the biblical and liturgical texts are the normative words from which liturgical music has to take its bearings. This does not rule out the continuing creation of new songs, but in-stead inspires them and assures them of a firm grounding in Gods love for mankind and his work of redemption.
The Spirit of Liturgy [SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000], p. 149]

(even if you've been told not to!)

Tuesday, February 26 from 7-9pm Do you wish you felt confident singing in church? We want to help! Director of Music, Bill Runge, and cantor and local singing teacher, Jennifer McCormick, invite all adult parishioners to a group singing class geared to help those who like to sing but aren't sure how. EVERYONE is invited to this fun, safe class, especially if your first thought is, "I'm a terrible singer." You will learn a little about how to sing louder and prouder, and then we'll learn as a group some of the music for upcoming Masses. So bring your smile, a hand mirror if you have one, and your vocal chords, and learn to love your voice!

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP R. DANIEL CONLON

February 11, 2013 Pope Benedict XVIs decision to resign came as a surprise to all of us. Yet, it is consistent with the humble disposition that I have come to recognize in him, both in my brief personal encounters with him and in his deportment generally as earthly shepherd of the Church. He recognized that he no longer had the physical gifts necessary to carry out an office that becomes increasingly demanding. The Holy Father has been a true blessing to us. He has been able to express the truths of faith in ways that are comprehensible for our times. He has been a steady and calm presence in the face of tumult in the world. He has persevered in Blessed John Paul IIs determination to confront the scandal of child abuse in the Church. Because the Church was founded by Christ and lives by the Holy Spirit, we have no reason to worry about the future. The College of Cardinals will be convened a few days after February 28 and elect a new Bishop of Rome in accord with existing norms. Our task, as members of the Body of Christ, is to seek the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit for the cardinals and to pray for a peaceful future for Pope Benedict.

Celebrate Presidents Day with the CCW on February 18

In God we Trust- is the theme of our Presidents Day Bingo party which will be held at Lexington Square Lombard at 555 Foxworth Blvd. Plan to join us on Monday the 18th for an interesting evening. You may even learn something about the lives of our Presidents and go away with a prize! Come and bring a friend. The fun begins at 6:30 PM. We are told that we should always start the day with a good breakfast. The Christ the King Knights of Columbus would like to help you get your day off to a good start by inviting you to the parishs annual Pancake breakfast on Sunday, February 17. The knights will be serving breakfast from 7:30 11:30AM. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice, coffee, de-caf coffee, and a sweets table. Made-to-order omelets are available at an additional charge of $2.00. Tickets are also available at the door, with adult tickets priced at $7.00 and seniors priced at $6.00. Proceeds will benefit Sacred Heart, Hopkins Park, IL, service project, a worthy cause our RE folks are working with that will assist families in one of the poorest sections in our Diocesan area. We hope to see everyone stop by after mass to enjoy a great meal. The motto In God we Trust printed on our currency has an interesting history that goes back to 1884. Some think of the words as a message for each one of us to trust God!

An initiative of the Council of Catholic Women EVERYONE IS IRISH ON ST. PARTICKS DAY

Nominations needed
Each spring, the Council of Catholic Women is asked to select a woman to represent the Parish at the annual Woman of the Year Mass at the Cathedral in Joliet. It is time again to select someone from our Parish for that honor. In addition, for the past several years, a man has been nominated to receive the Good Egg Award for his contribution to the Parish. Happily we are not running out of candidates who could be nominated. But, we would like you to help us in making the selection. If you would like to make a suggestion, please drop a note at the rectory addressed to CCW, or email your suggestion to Mary Ellen at mimiclish48@sbcglobal.net Along with the nominees name, include the reason you think she or he should receive the honor. All nominations must be received no later that February 24. A committee will meet with Fr. Peter later that week to select the honorees. Thank you for your help! The CCW Board

CTK SIMBANG GABI GROUP DOES IT AGAIN

On June 24, 2012 the CTK Simbang Gabi Group sponsored a Spring Dance which netted $8,350.00 for the CTK Building Fund which included a $1,000.00 anonymous donation. On December 16, 2012 the Simbang Gabi mass was held at CTK and was able to raise $1,000.00 on the second collection for the Diocese of Joliet College Mission to the Philippines represented by Fr. Mario Quejadas. The first collection on that date amounted to $587.00 which was given to Christ the King Curch on December 22, 2012. On top of this collection, the group gave an additional amount of $1,513.00 which included a substantial donation from another person who also did not want his/her name mentioned in this announcement. Overall, the total donation to CTK on account of the CTK Simbang Gabi Group during the year, for Christ The King after combining the Spring Dance and the Simbang Gabi Mass amounted to $10,450.00. We thank all the parishioners and non-parishioners who attended the CTK Simbang Gabi mass and contributed to the worthy causes during the collection for their generosity. We especially thank the donors of $1,000.00 each which we mentioned previously in the preceding paragraph. We thank our supportive pastor Fr. Peter Jarosz and all the members of the CTK staff for allowing our Filipino Simbang Gabi tradition to be celebrated at Christ The King Church!!! We likewise, wish to thank Victor Mandin and all those who helped set up the school gym for the reception after the mass & Cris Crisostomo for the music provided during the reception. May our ever loving Lord Jesus Christ bless all of you!!! Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year to all of you!!! Incidentally, Bishop Daniel Conlon is going to the Philippines with Fr. Mario Quejadas to see and ascertain the progress of this financial assistance to the province of Negros.

Catholicism DVD Series

Wednesday Mornings after the 8:30 am Mass All are welcome to come to one or all 10! We meet in the parish life center after the Wednesday 8:30 am Mass. Feb 20, 2013 Week 7: Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven - The Churchs Sacrament & Worship. Father Barron explores the notion that all value is summed up in the liturgy, the supreme act by which we commune with God. Considered by the Catholic Faith to be the source and summit of its identity and mission, the Eucharist is the central practice of the Churchs culture. Feb 27, 2013 Week 8: A Vast Company of WitnessesThe Communion of Saints - Father Barron gives consideration to some of the Churchs greatest heroes, and demonstrates their extraordinary examples display both the passion and the creative potential of the Catholic Church. Highlighting Katherine Drexl, Therese of Liseux, Edith Stein, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father Barron tells the story of the church as a vast company of witnesses who are called by Christ to be a communion of saints. March 6, 2013 Week 9: The Fire of His Love-Prayer and the Life of the Spirit-In this lesson, Father Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on prayer. As the catechism of the Catholic Church state, Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and heart to God.

Enlivening Our Faith In the Year of Faith Parish Mission March 18-20 ___________________________________ 8th Grade Confirmation Retreat March 3 at 8:45 am in The East Room of Rectory Catechism Corner
The human heart is heavy and hardened. God must give man a new heart. Conversion is first of all a work of the grace of God who makes our hearts return to him: Restore us to thyself, O LORD, that we may be restored! God gives us the strength to begin anew. It is in discovering the greatness of Gods love that our heart is shaken by the horror and weight of sin and begins to fear offending God by sin and being separated from him. The human heart is converted by looking upon him whom our sins have pierced. (CCC, n. 1432) We are no longer accepting Ultra receipts until they run the program again next school year. We appreciate your support! Please continue to collect Box Tops and Campbells soup labels. Containers are in the Narthex.

THE 2013 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL

THE LORD SUSTAINS HIS PEOPLE This week, you are asked to review the Annual Appeal tabloid that you will receive with your bulletin today. The Annual Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable over 10 months. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on Gods gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. He never forgets you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

New Envelope Program: Giving Back to God for All He Has Given to Us
Our new envelope program has had favorable reviews! The new envelopes our providing our parish both cost and administrative efficiencies savings and the appearance of the envelopes is also superior. Both colorful and with quotes based on scripture, preparing our envelope can be an effort in prayer and reflection on sharing our gifts with God who has first been generous to us. Another significant change is simplification of our envelopes. The gold has been eliminated and the green has been reduced to once a month AND IS NO LONGER GREEN (It is now called Debt Reduction). St Vincent DePaul and holy day envelopes will continue to be recieved monthly. The intent is to simplify your giving while allowing you to be as generous as you were in the past, and if your situation allows you to be more generous. What you gave to the gold in the past can be used in the NEW "green" or Sunday offering envelopes based on your preference. Green envelopes (now called Debt Reduction) will continue to be a restricted fund used for debt reduction. Paying off our debt remains a top priority for our parish. Just like you pay your personal bills monthly, we ask you to allocate a generous monthly giving to the green envelope in an amount equal or greater to what you previously gave per month. The children of our Religious education families and academy are doing envelopes to learn about time, talent and treasure. To date we are 8% behind on our monthly offering goals. Please try to help us make this up by reviewing your situation and if possible increase your giving with our new simplified offertory program. Electronic giving also remains an option, please see our parish web site or contact Elaine Ward for more in-formation if you feel this might be a better option for you. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this change in our offering envelope program. If you have any questions contact the Parish Office at 630.629.1717 or email the Finance council at Finance@ctklombard.org. Thank you for your continued generous support of Christ the King Parish. Because of your gifts to our parish offertory, we are able to minister to so many people every year. Together, we are the Body of Christ. Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.
