Year of Faith
The goal of our Lenten journey is to renew and deepen our relationship with God. May we seek to grow stronger spiritually by resisting temptation and by repenting of our sins. As we turn away from sin, we will come to love the Lord more fully. That love will flow from us into all aspects of our lives and subsequently affect the lives of others Welcome New Families to Christ the King Parish! Rest in Peace
Our condolences to the family and friends of Audrey Lantvit and Ignatius Piekarz

Pope Benedict XVI on Music The Primacy of Singing THE IMPORTANCE of music in biblical religion is shown very simply by the fact that the verb to sing (with related words such as song, and. so forth) is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible. It occurs309 times in the Old Testament and thirty-six in the New. When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not enough. Areas of his existence are awakened that spontaneously turn into song. Indeed, mans own being is insufficient for what he has to express, and so he in-vites the whole of creation to become a song with him: Awake, my soul! Awake, 0 harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I will give thanks to you, 0 Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithful-ness to the clouds (Ps 57:8f.). We find the first mention of singing in the Bible after the crossing of the Red Sea. Israel has now been definitively delivered from slavery. In a desperate situation, it has had an overwhelming experi-ence of Gods saving power. Just as Moses as a baby was taken from the Nile and only then really received the gift of life, so Israel now feels as if it has been, so to speak, taken out of the water: it is free, newly endowed with the gift of itself from Gods own hands. In the biblical ac-count, the peoples reaction to the foundational event of salvation is described in this sentence: [T]hey believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses (Ex 14:31). But then follows a second reaction, which soars up from the first with elemental force: "Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord (i 5: i). Year by year, at the Easter Vigil, Christians join in the singing of this song. They sing it in a new way as their song, because they know that they have been taken out of the water by Gods power, set free by God for authentic life. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 136] The singing of the Church comes ultimately out of love. It is the utter depth of love that produces the singing. Cantare amantis est, says St. Augustine, singing is a lovers thing. In so saying, we come again to the trinitarian interpretation of Church music. The Holy Spirit is love, and it is he who produces the singing. He is the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit who draws us into love for Christ and so leads to the Father. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 142] In liturgical music, based as it is on biblical faith, there is, therefore, a clear dominance of the Word; this music is a higher form of proclama-tion. Ultimately, it rises up out of the love that responds to Gods love made flesh in Christ, the love that for us went unto death. After the Resurrection, the Cross is by no means a thing of the past, and so this love is always marked by pain at the hiddenness of God, by the cry that rises up from the depths of anguish, Kyrie eleison, by hope and by supplication. But it also has the privilege, by anticipation, of experiencing the reality of the Resur-rection, and so it brings with it the joy of being loved, that gladness of heart that Haydn said came upon him when he set liturgical texts to music. Thus the relation of liturgical music to logos means, first of all, simply its relation to words. That is why singing in the liturgy has priority over instrumental music, though it does not in any way exclude it. It goes without saying that the biblical and liturgical texts are the normative words from which liturgical music has to take its bearings. This does not rule out the continuing creation of new songs, but in-stead inspires them and assures them of a firm grounding in Gods love for mankind and his work of redemption.

Nominations needed
Each spring, the Council of Catholic Women is asked to select a woman to represent the Parish at the annual Woman of the Year Mass at the Cathedral in Joliet. It is time again to select someone from our Parish for that honor. In addition, for the past several years, a man has been nominated to receive the Good Egg Award for his contribution to the Parish. Happily we are not running out of candidates who could be nominated. But, we would like you to help us in making the selection. If you would like to make a suggestion, please drop a note at the rectory addressed to CCW, or email your suggestion to Mary Ellen at mimiclish48@sbcglobal.net Along with the nominees name, include the reason you think she or he should receive the honor. All nominations must be received no later that February 24. A committee will meet with Fr. Peter later that week to select the honorees. Thank you for your help! The CCW Board

The human heart is heavy and hardened. God must give man a new heart. Conversion is first of all a work of the grace of God who makes our hearts return to him: Restore us to thyself, O LORD, that we may be restored! God gives us the strength to begin anew. It is in discovering the greatness of Gods love that our heart is shaken by the horror and weight of sin and begins to fear offending God by sin and being separated from him. The human heart is converted by looking upon him whom our sins have pierced. (CCC, n. 1432) We are no longer accepting Ultra receipts until they run the program again next school year. We appreciate your support! Please continue to collect Box Tops and Campbells soup labels. Containers are in the Narthex.

New Envelope Program: Giving Back to God for All He Has Given to Us
Our new envelope program has had favorable reviews! The new envelopes our providing our parish both cost and administrative efficiencies savings and the appearance of the envelopes is also superior. Both colorful and with quotes based on scripture, preparing our envelope can be an effort in prayer and reflection on sharing our gifts with God who has first been generous to us. Another significant change is simplification of our envelopes. The gold has been eliminated and the green has been reduced to once a month AND IS NO LONGER GREEN (It is now called Debt Reduction). St Vincent DePaul and holy day envelopes will continue to be recieved monthly. The intent is to simplify your giving while allowing you to be as generous as you were in the past, and if your situation allows you to be more generous. What you gave to the gold in the past can be used in the NEW "green" or Sunday offering envelopes based on your preference. Green envelopes (now called Debt Reduction) will continue to be a restricted fund used for debt reduction. Paying off our debt remains a top priority for our parish. Just like you pay your personal bills monthly, we ask you to allocate a generous monthly giving to the green envelope in an amount equal or greater to what you previously gave per month. The children of our Religious education families and academy are doing envelopes to learn about time, talent and treasure. To date we are 8% behind on our monthly offering goals. Please try to help us make this up by reviewing your situation and if possible increase your giving with our new simplified offertory program. Electronic giving also remains an option, please see our parish web site or contact Elaine Ward for more in-formation if you feel this might be a better option for you. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this change in our offering envelope program. If you have any questions contact the Parish Office at 630.629.1717 or email the Finance council at Finance@ctklombard.org. Thank you for your continued generous support of Christ the King Parish. Because of your gifts to our parish offertory, we are able to minister to so many people every year. Together, we are the Body of Christ.
