Thepoemscoverallfourtypesofclingingclingingtosensuality,toviews,to practicesandprecepts,andtodoctrinesoftheselfwithaspecialemphasison thefirsttwo.Theydescribewhatconstitutesthenatureoftheclingingineach particularcase,thedrawbacksoftheclinging,theadvantagesofabandoning clinging,waystoabandonclinging,andthesubtleparadoxesofwhatitmeans nottocling. ThislastpointistouchedoninmanydiscoursesinthePaliCanon,asthe Buddhistteachingsonnonclingingallcontainacentralparadox:theobjectsof clingingthatmustultimatelybeabandonedformpartofthepathtotheir abandoning.Acertainamountofsensualpleasureisneededinthepathtogo beyondsensualpleasure;RightViewisneededtoovercomeattachmenttoviews; aregimenofpreceptsandpracticesisneededtoovercomeattachmentto preceptsandpractices;astrongsenseofselfresponsibilityisneededto overcomeattachmenttodoctrinesoftheself. Theargumentfortakingtheparadoxesatfacevalueisbasedonamajor assumption:thattheAtthakaishistoricallypriortotherestofthePaliCanon. Fromthisassumption,theargumentgoesontoconcludethatthesepoems containtheearliestrecordedteachingsoftheBuddha,andthatiftheyconflict withotherpassagesintheCanon,thatissimplybecausethoseotherpassagesare lesstruetotheBuddhasoriginalmessage.Thisargument,however,contains severalweaknesses.Tobeginwith,onlytwopiecesofevidenceareofferedfor therelativeageofthesepoems:(1)theAtthakaVagga,asaset,ismentionedat

TheargumentthatthemeaningoftheAtthakasparadoxesmustbe inferredthattheywereintentionallystatedinobscuretermsisbasedonfirmer ground.Tobeginwith,thisistheinterpretationthatBuddhisttraditionhas advancedfromitsearliestcenturies.Anextendedcommentary,entitledthe Mahaniddesa(Nd.I),reconcilingthecontentofthepoemswiththeteachingsin therestofthediscourses,wascompiledearlyenoughtobeincludedinthe Canonitself.AlthoughsomeoftheexplanationsgivenintheMahaniddesamay seemalittletoopatandpedantic,theymakeclearthepointthatBuddhistsnear thetimeoftheBuddhafoundmanyusefullevelsofmeaningbelowthesurface levelofthepoems.
