Thank you for participating in the Introduction to Canvas Learning Management System training course. This course is designed and facilitated by Michigan Techs eLearning team. Although the course is self-paced, please know that support is always available within the Canvas training course, via the conversations messaging system, or through external email or phone contact directly to the eLearning team.

Course Information
This training course is open to all instructors at Michigan Technological University. The Canvas learning management system (LMS) by Instructure, Inc., will be replacing WebCT, the LMS currently used by instructors and students to access course materials, collaborate or submit class assignments, and provide assessment instruments and grade information to students. Canvas offers an intuitive workflow, a clean design, and a modern system architecture that fully leverages modern web browsers and the evolving web language standard, HTML5. This training course is designed for selfpaced delivery, with learners advancing through the various course modules upon completion of the various learning objectives contained within. The primary instructional method is instructional video tutorials. Learners will have access to their own test

course to explore the Canvas LMS interface and complete the learning activities. Having the training course delivered within Canvas will further advance the learning opportunities for participants as they experience a course from the student perspective. Feedback and technical assistance will be available within your training course by eLearning team members. We trust this training will be a worthwhile investment of your time as you prepare for Michigan Techs next generation LMS.

Course Location
This online course is delivered in the new Canvas LMS. All university instructors are automatically enrolled in this training course. To access Canvas go to http://courses.mtu.edu. Enter your ISO credentials (the same as for all other university supported online resources). Once you are in Canvas you will find the online training course listed in the courses menu drop-down selection (see image below)

Course Goals
The following are the baseline training goals for this online course: Module 1: Become familiar with the Canvas user interface and navigation structure. Complete your user profile within the Canvas LMS. Module 2: Complete the configuration of your sample Canvas course, including selection of course layout format. Review various course layout options, including communication streams, custom html pages, modules, and assignment lists. Module 3: Become familiar with the Canvas communication tools, used to engage your students. These include course conversations, discussions, chat, and conferences. Apply your new skills by creating a sample discussion, and configuring the chat and conference tools. Module 4: Learn about the various types of course content that be associated with your course. Add assignments, files, content pages, and external links to your sample course. Module 5: Learn about practice and graded assessments tools and how these are configured. Understand what type of assessment is best to measure the learning outcomes of your students.

Required Course Materials


There are no required course texts or other resources. Additional supplemental training resources will be provided as linked content at the end of each training module. These supplemental resources will draw from the extensive library of materials from Instructure, and some third-party resources made available by other Canvas institutions.

Technical Requirements
A modern computer with speakers, an integrated or external web-cam, and high speed Internet access are required to complete the training course. A built-in microphone or external USB microphone is also required. A USB headset with built-in microphone is recommended. This peripheral will allow you to more easily accomplish the audio and video related activities in the course. PC users should be running Windows XP or Windows 7. Mac users should be running OS 10.5x (Leopard), 10.6x (Snow Leopard), or 10.7x (Lion). Canvas uses the HTML5 web language. A modern browser that

supports HTML5 is required. Most common modern browsers will work (PC users: Internet Explorer 8 or 9, Firefox 5 (or higher), and Chrome, Mac users: Safari 5.x, Firefox 5x or higher, or Chrome.

Note: All module quizzes and activities are intended to provide practical experience with the Canvas LMS environment. There are no grades or point values associated with these training activities. Incorrect answers on quizzes will be indicated and correct answers provided.

Course Expectations
This self-paced training course is provided as an introduction and overview to the Canvas LMS. Upon completion of this training, learners should have a basic understand of the Canvas user interface, tools, course layout options, and basic tools commonly used in most courses. The eLearning team will provide additional training resources. Third-party resources from Instructure are provided to further your knowledge experience as you progress in Canvas.
