Convention

January 24-25, 2013

#MNACon13

Minnesota Newspaper Association

A Drop of Ink Makes Millions Think is this years theme. We discovered convention materials from the past century during a recent MNA office cleanout and learned that this theme first debuted in 1891 at the 7th Annual Meeting of the National Editorial Association in St. Paul. We chose to reprise the theme in 2013 because we believe that the printed word is still powerful as ever, whether it is published in the pages of our newspapers, websites or other media products. I know this years convention sessions will make you think. Not only have we rounded up experts in print media which is alive and well in Minnesota but electronic media as well. Youll find sessions in advertising, management, editorial, design, photography, circulation and more. We are confident that the sessions created by the board, committees and staff will empower you, inspire you and enable you to take home practical ideas you will use. Were also excited this year to offer a full track for circulation managers through a special partnership with the Northern States Circulation Managers Association. I often tell newspaper colleagues that the good thing about the convention is that there are so many great sessions. And, the bad thing about the convention is there are so many great sessions. Its difficult to take it all in because there are so many interesting sessions from which to choose!

Governor Mark Dayton

12 noonGrand Ballroom West and Center Dessert with Trade Show Vendors sponsored by Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Grand Ballroom East, following lunch

Democrats control the Senate, House and Governors Office for the first time in more than two decades. However, that doesnt mean that there will not be challenges. Minnesotas fiscal situation is improving, but the state still faces a projected $1.1 billion budget shortfall and owes $1.1 billion to public schools. Governor Dayton unveils his tax proposal plan for his two-year budget on Tuesday, January 22. Learn more about this proposal and what the Governor hopes to achieve in 2013 at this informative and newsworthy event. Gov. Dayton was born in Minneapolis and raised in a house in Long Lake, where his father still lives today. He has two grown sons, Eric and Andrew, and lives in St. Paul with his three German Shepherds: Mesabi, Mingo and Itasca. For more than 30 years, Gov. Dayton has served Minnesotans, as Commissioner of the Minnesota Departments of Economic Development and of Energy and Economic Development, as State Auditor, and as United States Senator. In 2010, he was elected Minnesotas 40th Governor.

Andrew Zimmern - FOOD : A Global Perspective on the State of our Food Life
Andrew Zimmern takes you with him for a whirlwind tour of his world travels, informing and entertaining as he connects the audience to both his boots on the ground experience and his philosophies of both food and life. His amazing stories cover everything from the great global food scene to how you really can change the planet one meal at a time, as hes experienced firsthand breaking bread (or other things!) with people from Syria and China to Cuba and the Kalahari desert. Inspiring, enlightening and always entertaining, Zimmern shows that the world is truly getting smaller, and that the best place to learn about it and other cultures, is at the dinner table, not in a museum. Zimmern is a James Beard award-winning TV personality, chef, food writer, teacher and is regarded as one of the most versatile and knowledgeable personalities in the food world. As the co-creator, host and consulting producer of Travel Channels hit series, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and Andrew Zimmerns Bizarre World, he travels the globe, exploring food in its own terroir.

The Search for Creativity Jim Stasiowski

A practical examination of the distinction we journalists have to make between fact-listing and actually telling a story. Too many reporters, editors and journalism professors place so much emphasis on piling up facts, they forget that readers want stories, and a story is an efficient, even engaging, way of presenting facts. Stasiowski uses specific examples that require people in the audience to read and evaluate stories.

The session on creativity was designed to shake up the audience. It is based on advice found in a book by Donald Murray, the man who invented writing coaching: An editor once said that a good reporter is forever astonished at the obvious. The premise is that really innovative stuff is right in front of us, but we are too dependent, as Murray says, on getting our story ideas from the calendar, the police radio, the competitors newspaper, the publishers second cousin, or the PR release. This session will challenge people in the audience to look at the world the way a truly creative person looks at it. Guaranteed, people will leave the room full of new ideas.

Jim Stasiowski, the writing coach for The Dolan Company, graduated in 1970 with a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Nebraska. After serving four years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, he worked on a farm in Nebraska for 1 years, then started his newspaper career in 1976 at The Breeze, a 5,000-circulation daily in Cape Coral, Fla. In his seven years at The Breeze, he worked as a photographer, reporter, editor, editorial writer and columnist. He once even painted the newsroom, with the help of his wife, Sharon. In 1982, he took a reporting job at The Columbian, a 47,000-circulation daily in Vancouver, Wash. He had a general-assignment beat, with a focus in politics. He also wrote humor and political columns. Some readers said they didnt notice the difference. In 1989, he moved back to his hometown of Baltimore, Md., and started a writing-coaching business. He traveled across the country (and even to Canada and Bermuda) to coach writing at dozens of newspapers, and he did writing seminars at conferences sponsored by state, regional and national newspaper groups. Since 2006, he has been the writing coach for The Dolan Company, a national newspaper and professional-services company with headquarters in Minneapolis. The Dolan Company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Jim and Sharon are listed in the Sparks, Nev., telephone book.

To Paywall or Not to Paywall? Presented by the MNA New Media Committee Panel Discussion

Its important for media companies to maintain high ethical standards in order to earn and keep the trust of readers. But as technology changes how we gather information, staffs grow and shrink, and information sharing spreads beyond the traditional printed pages of the newspaper, does maintaining independence and integrity become more difficult? Are there new rules for ethics in the digital age? This interactive session will explore best practices, real-world case studies, and provide solid examples and guides for ethics in print, online and social media. John Bodette, started his 38-year journalism career in 1974 as wire editor at the St. Cloud Times. He also served as city editor and news editor. In 1981, he was one of the original journalists on the prototype project that helped create USA Today. He also worked as the graphics editor at the Rochester (N.Y.) Times Union. He was named managing editor at the Times in 1986 and executive editor Dec. 23, 2005. He is a past president of the Minnesota Associated Press Managing Editors Association. He was the winner of the 2008 Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership. He is also the executive editor of www. sctimes.com and other Times Media publications and Web sites. Bodette is a graduate of St. Johns University, Collegeville, MN. To relax, he runs triathlons, duathlons, and half marathons -- none very fast. His favorite journalism quote: The cherished title of editor must be earned with every edition. -John C. Quinn, retired Gannett chief news executive.

He then served 19 years as a publisher with Lee and now Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. He has worked with news organizations in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota. John Bodette has served as the Executive Editor of the St. Cloud Times since 2005. John is also presenting Ethical Guidelines and Principles for Print, Online and Social Media on Thursday, Jan. 24. See his full bio on page 12.

Kerri Kava began her newspaper career in 2008 when a Newspapers in Education Coordinator position caught her eye. In those 4 short years, while leading the program, she has had tremendous success in bringing the program to a new place that is now open, not only to public and private school teachers, but now also to parents, grandparents and as she says, anyone who wants to learn. After a major rebranding and website revamp last summer The Forum NIE program is now known as The Learning Forum. Kerri has lead marketing efforts for The Learning Forum program in both print and media commercials to promote this transformation. legal Update Mark Anfinson

No one wants to see their community struck by a disaster, whether it be a devastating storm, epic flood, a destructive fire or a tragic shooting. But, these tragedies do happen and community newspapers often take on the role of information provider, storyteller, therapist, and sometimes first responder. What would you do when tragedy strikes? What happens when the national media roll into town? How will you use new media tools to disseminate information and tell the story of whats going on? And, how do you tell a potentially horrible story to a town you care for deeply? Hear from panelists whove covered their communities before, during and beyond a tragic event. Panelists: Dave Aeikens, St. Cloud Times Sarah McKenzie, The Journal, Minneapolis Jake Benson, Proctor Journal Moderator: Dave Pyle
