Abstract- A compact super ultra-wideband (UWB) printed
monopole antenna is proposed. A special-shaped radiation patch
and modified ground plane with two bevel is used to achieve
super ultra-wideband performance. It occupies a compact
volume of 35 x 24 x 0.8 (672 mm
3
) including the ground plane.
The 10 dB impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is from
2.88 GHz to 96.5 GHz. The design and optimization has been
carried out using the commercial software ANSYS HFSS
version 14. The antenna has been designed on a FR-4 substrate
having thickness 0.8 mm and dielectric constant 4.4. Good
radiation patterns and gains within the operating band have been
obtained.

I. INTRODUCTION
Microstrip antennas have a lot of advantages like light
weight, low volume, low cost, conformal configuration, and
compatibility with integrated circuits. However, some
disadvantages are also there in microstrip antenna and the
narrow bandwidth is one of them which limits their uses in
modern wideband wireless applications [1, 2].
After the FCC approval for frequency allocation in band
between 3.110.6 GHz, the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology
has gained a lot of popularity among researchers [3]. As ultra-
wideband (UWB) technology becomes the possible solution
for short-range, low-power indoor data communication
applications, it offers simultaneously high data rate
communication and high accuracy positioning capabilities.
Many studies have been done with different methods to
achieve wideband for printed antennas. Some of are changing
the size of the antenna, varying the radiator, adding additional
parts such as multi layers or gaps, using slot, shorting wall,
folded shorting wall, and using circular arc shaped slot on
thick substrate [4]. Recently, several antennas have been
designed in [5][9] which can achieve ultra-wide impedance
bandwidths. L. Li et al. have given a compact ultra-wideband
printed monopole antenna with different configurations
exhibiting good impedance matching, stable radiation patterns,
and high efficiency over bandwidths suitable for use with
UWB system [10].

A printed super UWB monopole antenna with smaller size is
presented in this paper. The bandwidth of the antenna
presented in this paper is from 2.88 to 96.5 GHz for S
11
< -10
dB which has too far wide bandwidth than earlier antennas. It
also displays desirable characteristics such as compact size,
low cost, and good radiation pattern like omnidirectional and
dipole like pattern in both E-plane and H-plane respectively.
The detailed design and simulated results are discussed in this
article. In section 2 the design of antenna and its dimension
has been described in detail. The radiation pattern at different
frequency and its gain are shown in section 3. The S-
parameter is also presented in that section. In section 4
conclusion has been drawn. This antenna would be very
beneficial for UWB wireless communications in the future.

design of proposed antenna was
optimized taking several
aspects into consideration of
super ultra-wide bandwidth of
the antenna. The antenna has a
compact volume of 35 x 24 x 0.8
(672 mm

) and it is designed on
FR-4 substrate with a dielectric
constant of 4.4 and loss tangent
of 0.02. The thickness of
substrate (T) taken here is 0.8
mm. It is composed of a 50-
microstrip feed line having
length L
S
= 13.73 mm and
microstrip width W
S
= 1.525
mm, a rectangular radiation
patch having L
1
= 13.5 mm and width W = 24 mm, with a
partially circular edge in feed side having circular radius R =
13.13 mm and a moderately adjusted ground plane with two
bevels to achieve a wide bandwidth. All dimension of
designed antenna are shown in Table 1.

III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The impedance bandwidth and radiation behavior of the
proposed antenna are examined using the commercial software
high-frequency structure simulation (HFSS). Fig. 2 shows the
simulated return loss against frequency for the designed super
UWB antenna. The resulted impedance bandwidth shows a
very wide band in between 2.88 to 96.5 GHz. The gain of
proposed antenna in the entire operating band is presented in
fig. 3. The 3D plot of radiation pattern is shown in fig. 4 at 4.5
GHz. The radiation pattern at different frequency like 3 GHz,
4.5 GHz, 7.2 GHz, and 10 GHz respectively are shown in fig.
5 in both E-plane and H-plane. The antenna has a good gain
response over entire band of frequency with maximum gain of
8.38 dBi at 43.8 GHz
.

IV. CONCLUSION

A simple and compact super ultra-wideband micro strip-
fed printed monopole antenna is presented which will be very
useful for ultra-wideband wireless technology. The antenna
has a very wide impedance bandwidth ranging from 2.8896.5
GHz for S
11
< -10 dB, which is too far wider than earlier
antennas. This antenna occupies compact volume of 672 mm
3
.
The results show that the antenna not only has a super ultra-
wide bandwidth but it also has a good radiation pattern. The
antenna gives good radiation characteristics in both E-plane
and H-plane across the whole band with an average gain of
3.536 dBi which makes the proposed antenna suitable for
ultra-wideband application.
