COMMUNITY
TheinhabitantsareKuriaspeakingpeopleresidinginthesouthwestofKenya.

Theirmaineconomicactivityofthelocalpopulationisfarming,wherefarmersgrowtobacco,maize,beans,sweetpotatoesandotherhorticultural crops for sale. Cattle and goat trade also take place but the volume of trade has gone very low owing to the incessant cases of cattle rustling betweentheKuriapeopleandtheMaasaiandKipsigisoftheneighboringTransMaradistrict.Theareahaslowlevelsofliteracyespeciallyamong peopleagedfrom35yearsandabove.

BACKGROUNDOFTHESCHOOL
RemanyankiPrimarySchoolwasstartedforthepurposesofacquiringknowledgeandskillsnecessarytoenableyounggenerationmakeinformed decisionsconsideringtheirlowlevelofilliteracyandmoresotoempowerthegirlchildontheconsequencesofFemaleGenitalMutilation.

THEME:GIRLCHILDEDUCATION
Girlsarepluckedfromaclassroomtobeforcefullymarriedandinmostcases,theaffectedschoolchildrenareprimaryschoolchildren. "Itisunfortunatethatwhileothercommunitiesarediscardingtraditionsthatdragdowntheirsocioeconomicdevelopment,theKuriacommunity stillembracesthecustomofmarryingofftheirchildren.Itissomethingthatshouldbestoppedbecauseitdeniesthegirlschildtherightto education." AfterrealizingthattheKenyangovernmentwastakingstringentmeasuresonparentsengagingtheirchildreninforcedmarriages,somemembersof thecommunityoftencrossintoneighboringTanzaniawheretheyperformthemarriageritualsbeforecrossingbacktoKenya.TheKenyagovernment hasoutlawedforcedteenagemarriagesanditsperpetratorscanbejailed. Whatmakesteenagemarriagesespeciallyappallingisthatitburdenstheyounggirlswithresponsibilitiesthattheyareillpreparedfor.Thisincludes childbearingandtheconcomitanthustlesoftakingcareofchildren. Theculturehasbeenadetrimenttothegirlchildandasaresultfewergirlshavetheurgetocontinuewiththeireducationastheywillbemarriedoff beforetheycompletetheireducation.ThefutureofgirlsamongtheKuriainthedistrictremainsbleakunlessthecultureisdoneawaywith.

WORK
Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Mondays to Fridays. They will be involved in brick making, awareness campaigns on girl child education,traditionaldances,teachingandhomevisits.Volunteersareadvisedtocarryworkclothsincludingrubbergloves,boots,sandals,rain coat,umbrella,torch,sleepingbags,mosquitorepellant,sunscreenlotion,donationsofeverykindandofficialclothsforspecialoccasionsetc.A personalfirstAidkitisalsoessential. Others:Sunglasses,waterbottle,musicalinstruments,waterbottle,Localfoodstuffstobesharedduringtheworkcamp,souvenir,giftsforfriends orfortheproject.

ACCOMMODATION
Volunteerswillbeaccommodatedinclassroomsattheschoolwithtwoseparateroomsformaleandfemale.Thiswillbeinaworkcampsetupwhere thereareno bedsandtheywillsleeponthefloor ontheir matsand sleepingbags toexperiencecomplexitiesofdevelopmentchallengesinrural Kenya. VolunteerswithspecialneedslikethosewhoarephysicallychallengedshouldalertKVDAonapplicationsothateffortsaremadetoaccommodate themappropriately.

Inviewofthese,communitymembersheldameeting,raisedmoneyandstartedtheSchoolinoneoftheclassroomsof MkamathiPrimarySchool.Thefirstformoneclasshad29students.In2008,whenthesecondclasswasadmitted,the SchoolrelocatedandoccupiedNkamathiSpecialSchoolunitclassrooms.InSeptember2008,thecurrentPrincipalwas postedtotheSchoolbytheTeachersServiceCommissionandbythistimetheSchoolhadenrolled72students.The firstBoardofGovernorswasappointedthesameyear.In2009,thefirsttwopermanentclassroomswereconstructed with the assistance from Igembe North Constituency Development Fund and these were built on a piece of land donatedbyNkamathivillagecommunityandtwomoreclassroomsareunderconstructionin2010. THEME:ENVIRONMENTALCONSERVATION Thestarkrealityonclimatechangehasimpactednegativelyonlivelihoods,renderingcommunitiesdestitute,devoidof nature;ashumanbeingsandwildlifecompeteforresources;eventuallydealingdeadlyblowontheEcosystem.Never thanbefore,istherealitysinkinginatthemomentaswitnessedbypersistentdrought,erraticrainsanduntoldnatural disasteroccasionedbythesuddenchangeofclimate. Itbecomesimperativetochampionthecauseoftreeplantingandsensitizationofenvironmentallyfriendlypractices that are paramount to the safeguard nature, its endowments and posterity. Environmental conservation campaigns willputintoconsiderationthebiggapoccasionbycommercialventuresandcompromisesenteredbystateandnon state actors that gravely compromise the efforts to reduce the emission of dangerous fumes with impunity. It is incumbentuponalltheplayertobeproactiveineffortstogreenmothernatureandbeeducatedonwhatittakesto

safeguardtheinterestsofposterity;includingtheurgentneedforciviceducationtotrickledowntotheSchooledand unschooledmassesinsocietytoappreciatetheimpactoftheenvironmentonourdailylives.  THECOMMUNITY Embu ethnic group are the founding community of Mount Kenya region but the smallest in population with approximately400,000inhabitantswhooccupyEmbuEastandEmbuWestdistricts. BACKGROUNDCREDOCHILDRENHOME TheCredoChildrensCentreKiaraganaisacharitablechildrensinstitutiondedicatedtoprotectionandcaremainlyto childrenfromthestreets,orphanedandthosewhoarevulnerablefromwithinandoutsideEmbucommunitywhofind themselvesinsusceptiblesituationsthatputtheirlivesandtheirfutureatrisk.Theinstitutionendeavourstofacilitate rehabilitation throughprovisionof education,careandprotectioninahumaneandlovingenvironmentinwhichthe childrenunderitscarecanthrivetobecomematureandresponsibleadults.Thisismadepossiblethroughthesupport of its parent organization THE CREDO FOUNDATION in conjunction with donors, sponsor, volunteers and other well wishers. The institution is the brain child of the chairman CREDO FOUNDATION Mtumishi, Augustine Njeru Kathangu. His visiontoprovideanalternativelifeforthestreetchildrenandothers,whohavebeendeprivedoftheirbasicrights,was actualizedin1996whenthelandownersoftheoldKiaraganamarketagreedtoleasetheplotsandthroughawork camp organized by Mr. Kathangu himself involving local and international volunteers, and the centre started. The ownersofthesaidoldmarketplotslateragreedtosellthelandtoCredoFoundation. Since then the home has managed to change the lives of many children. The institution is run by a committee identifiedbyCredoFoundationboardoftrusteeswhosesecretaryisthecentersmanageralsoappointedbythesaid Boardoftrustees.ThecurrentmanagerMr.PerminusNjuehasbeenrunningthecentresincetheyear2000andhas ablysteereditwiththehelpoftheFoundationChairmanandthecentrecommitteetoitscurrentstate. THEME:REHABILITATION Caused change of behavior and attitude from that is undesirable to that which is desirable. This programme was developedincognitionthatquiteanumberofchildrencannotattainnormalgrowthintoadulthood,eitherduetolack ofcommitmentandgoodwillonthepartofparents/guardians,ortheabsenceofanenvironmentconduciveforthe properdevelopment. Toachievethis,thefollowingstepsneedtobetaken: Conduct investigations, collect data and compile reports complete with recommendations on all the childrenadmittedtothecentreorhavethepotentialforadmissionwithaviewtoestablishinghowbesttoassist them. (ii) Ensure that all the children residing at the centre are committed fully by their parents/guardians and recommendedbyprovincialadministrationandchurchministersfromtheirhomeareaswiththeaimofpresenting themlatertothechildrenmagistratescourtforcommittaldocumentstothecentre. (iii) Createanactivelinkbetweentheparents/guardiansandthechildtoensurethatthechildwilleventually beabsolvedbacktothefamily. (iv) Providethechildwiththeentirebasicessentialsasanindividualandinstillasenseofresponsibility. (v) Monitorphysicalgrowthandlearningprogressandmakethenecessaryrecommendationsandfollowups.  THECOMMUNITY The community consists ofKuriaspeaking ethnic group. The Kuria peoplearemainlyagriculturalists and pastoralist, withtheKenyanKuriansleaningtowardsagricultureandtheTanzanianKuriansmoretowardspastoralism. TheKuriaarecloselyrelatedtotheKisiipeopleofKenyabothinlanguageandphysique.Theyaresaidtohavebeena one people until a vicious attack by the Maasai in the early 19th century scattered both populations in different directions. This apartness has ledtotheformation of distinctdialects which areclearlyunderstood by bothpeoples. TheKuriapeoplearedividedintoabout16"subtribes" BACKGROUNDOFNYAMANCHEPRIMARYSCHOOL Theschoolwasbegunin1982anditisapublicschool.ItissponsoredbyMaranataMissionofKenya.Theschoolhasa populationof584studentswith282girlsand302boys.Theschoolwasstartedwiththeaimofhavingmembersofthe community have access to education and more so the girl child. In this community, differences between man and woman dictate a difference in their social roles and this reinforces a notion that men are more superior to women. Capacity building will provide both men and women with political insight and moral support in confronting gender issues. A womans social status has led to marginalization. This was the very reason of starting the school so as to empowerthegirlchild. THEME:FOCUSONFEMALEGENITALMUTILATION Female genital mutilation is a strong tradition in this community. It is illegal. But still more than one third of the womenarecircumcisedandeachandeveryyoungwomanissubjectedtothecut. ThechurchhaspreachedagainstFGMfordecadesbutinspiteofthedeepdevoutnessthepriestsdonothaveenough poweroverthesouls. FGM has nothing to do with religion; it is a socalled culture and tradition in certain groups. The practice is deeply rooted in views on chastity, transition to womanhood, purity for marriage and basically a wish to control women sexually.Incertainareasthesurvivalandfertilityofthelocalcommunityisassumedtobethreatenedifthegirlsare notcircumcised.ManybraveyounggirlswhorefuseFGMareregardedasunmarriageableandbecomeoutcasts.  THECOMMUNITY The community is located along the equator line. It consists of Luhya speaking people. Poverty levels are high due unemploymentwithhighrateofschooldropoutsduetoearlypregnancyanddrugabuse.MasenoUniversitywhichisa centre of excellence in training and research around the world is located astride the equator. The inhabitants are agriculturalistsandgrowmaize,beansandgroundnutsforfoodcrop. BACKGROUNDOFEMUKHUYAPRIMARYSCHOOL Emukhuya Primary School is located in the Western part of Kenya. The school was founded in 1983 through the communitys initiative. Currently the school has a population of 269 pupils i.e. 139 boys and 130. Currently the school has 40 orphans of which 19 are boys and 21 girls. The school captures the motto, discipline and hard work leads to success THEME:DRUGABUSE Drug abuse is a major issue in the western part of Kenya and goes hand in hand with poverty. During the ancient period, most African practices had strict values and structures around alcohol and drug abuse. This was meant only for the elders. Recently,Drugandsubstanceabuseisamajorhindrancetodevelopmentinthisarea.Allcategoriesofthepopulation, from the youth to the old, men to women are affected. There is for instance widespread abuse of cannabis Sativa. RecentlytheuseofMandrazandmorphinederivativesbystudentsisontheincrease.Changaadrinkingandtobacco smoking is also on theincrease among theyouth. Thishasimpacted negatively on education, social behaviourand health.Ithasalsoledtolowlevelsofengagementinpositiveeconomicactivities. As a rainforest, the canopy of the trees has grown into a thin mesh of interlocking top branches that block most sunlightfromreachingthegroundbelow,resultinginlessvegetationatthegroundlevel.Withfewbushesalongthe darkenedforestfloor, themainobstacleisancient fallentreetrunks blockingthepathsbetweenthestandingtrees. More than 400 species of birds have been found in the Kakamega rainforest. The many song birds fill the air with variousbirdcalls. Thishas earnedKenyagreat honourastheleadingAfricannationin athleticsandbroughthomenumeroustrophies andrecognitionthathasremarkablybeenamarketingplanforKenyawithregardtotourismpromotion. KVDA based on these attributes is committed to involve the international community to celebrate the cultural phenomenon ofthese great people posses larger than lifeprofile in pursuit to empower themselves tobecome self reliant. Therawtalentexhibitedintheareaisahugeresourcefunctionandachallengetousthatshouldbeharnessedinthe processofalleviatingtheidentifycrisisthatcontinuetobedevilhumanityatthealtarofexpediencyandopportunism. Thisisanopportunitytodemonstratetotheyouththattheyhavethecapacitytoearnalivingbasedontheattributes oftheirtalents. WORK/STUDY VolunteerswillworkforsixhoursdailyfromMondaystoFridays.TheywillbeinvolvedinBrickMaking,construction, teaching and awareness campaign on Women enterprise development in collaboration with community based organizations and home visits.Volunteersareadvisedtocarryworkclothsincludingrubbergloves,boots,sandals, raincoat,umbrella,torch,sleepingbags,mosquitorepellant,sunscreenlotion,donationsofeverykindandofficial clothsforspecialoccasionsetc.ApersonalfirstAidkitisalsoessential. ACCOMMODATION Volunteerswillbeaccommodatedinclassroomsattheschoolwithtwoseparateroomsformaleandfemale.Thiswill beinaworkcampsetupwheretherearenobedsandtheywillsleeponthefloorontheirmatsandsleepingbagsto experiencecomplexitiesofdevelopmentchallengesinruralKenya.

VolunteerswithspecialneedslikethosewhoarephysicallychallengedshouldalertKVDAonapplicationsothatefforts aremadetoaccommodatethemappropriately. CAMPFEES/EXTRAFEES Volunteers participating in this project will be required to pay Euros 300 for a package of three weeks and this will includeAirportPickUpanddropoffaftertheworkcamp,onedayfullboardaccommodationduringtheorientation day,farestotheprojectandback,food,facilitation,certificateofparticipationandwillcaterforAdministrativecosts aswell. KISWAHILITRAININGPROGRAM{optional} Kiswahili training program is tailormade to suit volunteers preference and open to individuals keen to have basic knowledgeinKiswahilithatiswidelyspokeninEastAfricaandnowadaystaughtinprestigiousUniversitiesintheworld. The10dayprogramisorganizedinasereneatmosphereinordertoquenchforthirstamongvolunteers.Thosewilling toparticipateintheprogramshouldinformKVDAatleasttwoweeksbeforearrival.
