POPULARIZING SCIENCE.

Synopsis 1. Introduction. Science may be defined as the knowledge of fact, reason or cause behind any phenomenon. Scientist calls these fact, causes or reasons as scientific laws or scientific rules. For popularizing science we have to spread these scientific laws or scientific rules among all. Curiosity is also a major prime mover towards scientific knowledge. A curious person in quest to know the reason behind any phenomenon gathers scientific knowledge. So if every people are driven by curiosity then automatically scientific facts get known to everybody and automatically science gets popular among all. It has also been seen that Necessity is the Mother of Invention so we have to look at necessity and try to solve them with existing scientific laws. If the prevailing scientific information does not help us to solve the necessity then we have to discover newer way to solve the necessity, this in turn may lead to discovery of new scientific laws. 2. How to achieve the target of Popularizing Science. Various measures can be taken for popularizing science. For example different communication medium such as Newspaper, Compact Disk and Television can be used to spread the scientific law or scientific rules. Also by organizing scientific Events scientific temperament can be grown among all and this can help in popularizing science. 3. Advantages of Popularizing Science. If people are more aware of the scientific facts or reasons then whatever they do will have better result. Thus it will contribute to the betterment of the society. 4. Disadvantages of Popularizing Science. Some scientific knowledge can hamper the society. If the scientific knowledge of explosives gains popularity then it could be harmful for the society. Also popularity of scientific knowledge on Nuclear reaction and human cloning can also bring disaster to the society. 5. Conclusion. Nature is the actual teacher of Science. Human beings only see natures behavior and try to understand them. Then they try to describe the reason of its behavior and pen them down as scientific laws or rules. By spreading these existing scientific laws or rules we can popularize the science. We should also strive towards formulation of new scientific laws from nature, try to find their application for the betterment of society and bring them to the knowledge of all. Science will be more popular when it will be used for the benefit of Society.

Science may be defined as the knowledge of the facts, cause or reasons behind any phenomenon or any occurrences. For example from time immemorial human beings wondered how a bird can fly, so they tried to find out the reason. Later the reason was discovered and Wright Brothers modeled a system and named it aero-plane which could fly. The reason how to fly were pen down by researcher as a scientific law and today many companies uses these law to make systems which can fly. These systems can take people and goods across borders. By communicating the scientific laws that govern the universe, science can be made popular among all. Curiosity is also another major factor that helps to drive out new scientific laws of nature. For example Sir James watt saw the cover of the kettle is being lifted up and he became curious to know the scientific reason behind that phenomenon. He later found that steam was lifting the cover of kettle and later this same concept was used to drive train. Also Sir Isaac Newton saw the falling of apple and was curious to know the reason behind the falling of apple. He could ultimately find the reason and he named it The Law of Gravitation. Thus we see that people who are curious they try to understand the reason behind any phenomenon, they read all scientific laws already observed by researchers. Thus curiosity can help to formulate new scientific laws and by arousing the curiousness to know the reason behind everything we can contribute towards popularizing science. It has seen that Necessity is the Mother of Invention whenever any necessity arises human beings try to solve the necessity. For example in ancient age the need of cooking resulted in discovery of fire. Also majority of the scientific development was done as an offshoot of defense work for example internet was developed as an offshoot work of Department of Defense (USA). Also light weight artificial limbs made of light metal came out as an offshoot work when a Research organization of India was working for making light space aircraft. Also sending satellite using rocket technology is costly, so people were driven towards making a system which is light, miniaturized and compact, so this resulted in the development of miniaturized Electronic chips, and now this small chip contains all the functionality. Thus as an offshoot of satellite work resulted in miniaturization of Electronics chip containing nearly all functionality (known as System on Chip (Soc)) and they also consume less power. These chips thus found its usage in mobile phones, laptop computer, palmtop computer which human beings can carry in hands and powered on battery for days continuously. So we should try to solve the necessity and in this process we can discover new scientific laws. We can bring this scientific knowledge before all and can popularize science .Sometimes some sudden incident also brings forth scientific facts before us. For example the invention of electricity was an incident. The discoverer got a shock on a cloudy day when he was trying to fly a kite with copper wire He could finally discoverer that charges can flow through a medium. Thus electricity was discovered. Today we cant think a day without electricity. Also the famous scientific Law of sir Archimedes has found its usage in various fields of Engineering one of its usage is in the manufacturing of Ships. Science can be made popular by bringing the scientific facts or scientific laws to the knowledge of all. Curiosity has to be inculcated among all so that all become eager to know the scientific facts. For this we have to take initiative in every way. Scientific knowledge and curiosity has to be groomed from childhood level. The parents should try to teach the basic science to their children. The parents and teachers should also try to inculcate the curiosity of knowing by asking and guiding them to know the science behind the basic things. In High School the teachers should compulsorily arrange for Dipankar Nath, dipankar.nath@gmail.com DLRL(DRDO),Hyderabad Mobile:+91-9951275140

Science Exhibition. The teacher should ask students to participate in making different scientific models and demonstrating them. Newspaper can become a useful source for popularizing science. Newspaper can publish article on the explanation of different scientific phenomenon and also the biographies of different scientist. This will make awareness of science among all. For example The Hindu Newspaper of India publishes article on Science and Technology on Every Thursday. Nowadays multimedia Compact Disk (CDs) is helpful in explaining the scientific facts using animation. This animation helps in understanding the complex phenomenon in a simple way as it is rightly said that a picture is worth then a thousand words. In Indian market, Buzzers CDs explains about the behavior of universe and gives demonstration on the construction of scientific models in a much simple way. These CDs can be used in school and colleges for explaining various complex scientific phenomenons. Television is also a useful source for scientific teaching. Channels like Discovery channel are imparting scientific education and arousing curiosity of know scientific reasons but more channels has to be dedicated on specific scientific branches. These channels should be focused on different applications of science in Engineering Systems, biological systems, and astronomical system. Scientific libraries and laboratories can be setup for common people wherever possible so that all people should be aware of impact of science on their lives. These libraries should explain scientific phenomenon. The Science City of Kolkata (India) is one such place of scientific demonstration. These days cinema or movies are being watched by almost everyone, movies like A Beautiful Mind based on the true story of Nobel Laureate John Nash, Bermuda Triangle documentary movie on Bermuda Triangle can be tried to be shown on every Malls, Movie Halls, TV Channels on a regular basis and government can take measure in implementing this step. These movies have a very large impact and this can inculcate scientific temperament and scientific curiosity among all. Some Scientific events like Science talent search exam, National talent search exam on science also can be organized and good awards can be awarded. This will also foster scientific curiosity. In this Information era Internet has become a major communication and resource sharing medium. Websites like www.wikpedia.org allows people from all over the world to contribute their ideas and experiences on any topic. Thus internet can became a major source for scientific knowledge sharing. Advantages of popularizing science are many. People will be aware of the scientific causes and their effects behind every action. This will result in the betterment of society. Pollution has become a global problem and it is affecting weather and global warming. people aware about the scientific facts about pollution and its adverse effect started planting trees and using eco-friendly fuel to drive automobiles and in some places which were worse affected by pollution by doing this pollution remedy action has greatly reduced pollution in some places (for example Delhi, India). Also the popularity of the science of chemical substances for example fertilizer helped farmers to keep their crops free from insects. The science of computer technology has been popularized and it is nearly used in all the industrial process. Computer automation has resulted in accuracy and high mass production. The science of Information Technology especially in communication sector has brought about a revolution in the communication industry. Now the communication has become cheaper and faster. This has been a great help to people of all walks of life. The science of food preservation has helped the people to preserve food for longer hours. The science of medicine has also helped people to cure Dipankar Nath, dipankar.nath@gmail.com DLRL(DRDO),Hyderabad Mobile:+91-9951275140

form many diseases. Many synthetic molecules are being made and used for the betterment of people. Popularizing science can be a disadvantage to human beings. Popularity of the scientific facts about explosives can be a disaster to society. The popularity of rocket technology to all the countries has also become a problem. All the countries are sending satellites and they become unusable after its tenure. These unusable satellites are filling the space around the earth and posing problems for the placement of future satellites. If the science of human cloning gets popularity then one human beings can have many clones of him and this will create havoc to society. The popularity of nuclear science can become a Frankenstein like story where the Monster destroyed its master, the nuclear reaction has to very precisely control and if the nuclear reaction cannot be controlled in a proper manner then it will have a devastating effect on society. We see nature and try to study and understand its behavior. We tell the behavior of nature as scientific laws or rules. We found that a ray is available that could penetrate objects and it was called x-ray. This penetration behavior of x-ray has been widely used in medical field for scanning. We take everything from nature and try to find its use in our lives, for example we have found plaster of paris alias cement from nature and used its strengthening power(when mixed with water) to from big buildings. We take crude oil , Silicon, Gallium Arsenide, Iron, uranium, coal from nature and try to use it according to their properties(that is according to their scientific behavior). As Galileo has rightly said This World is a Laboratory, so we should try to understand and study nature for discovering new scientific behavior. We should also be curious to know the existing scientific laws already discovered and try to discover new scientific laws. We should bring them to the knowledge of all and find their application for humanity. Science will get more popularity when it will be used for the sake of society.
