Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Sen. Dan Patrick recently outlined more details about how they plan to use the legislative session to end public education as we know it.. We will not sit idly by as Republicans continue their efforts to rob our children of their futures. Chairman Hinojosa, you are absolutely correct, it would rob our children of their futures.. but also some very important consequences of allowing privately-owned charter schools to draw minority students away from public schools, would most-certainly bankrupt school districts. This would inevitably force school districts to shutter campuses, lay-off teachers and other school staff plus it would devastate the property value (tax base) of surrounding homes, which in many cases, would be the future homes of todays students. We need many more strong back-bones not just from our legislators, but also from civic organizations and from individual parents, who should be even more concerned regarding their childrens future, and attend SBOE hearings also, as some of our AGIF members have. ONLY THREE OF US VETERANS, INCLUDING 87-YEAR-OLD DR. C.P. GARCIA, were present at the last hearing. Some of our leaders have shamelessly accepted money from charter school proponents; thereby, selling-out the best interest and the future of our students. Dear Democrats, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Sen. Dan Patrick recently outlined more details about how they plan to use the legislative session to end public education as we know it. Public education is the key that unlocks the American Dream for the vast majority of our children. And anything that threatens that is beyond unacceptable. Through a combination of high-toned rhetoric coupled with smoke and mirrors Texas Republicans are doing everything possible to destabilize our public schools. Their most recent proposals are the next step in this endeavor. After slashing five billion in public education funding, Republicans now want to divert our tax dollars to their privatization friends. The people of Texas have made it perfectly clear that we oppose these publicly funded private school voucher schemes. The education of our children should not be a political game. The Texas Democratic Party promises determined and sustained opposition to these latest attempts. We will not sit idly by as Republicans continue their efforts to rob our children of their futures. Thank you for standing with us in these efforts. Sincerely, Gilberto Hinojosa Chair Texas Democratic Party
