Rosa and Julie quickly climbed into the school bus and by the time they found a seat together, Julie was already giggling. Why are you laughing? asked Rosa. Julie pointed to the plastic boots both of the girls were wearing and the gloves they had stuffed in their coat pockets. When have we ever been this excited about cleaning? she asked. Rosa grinned because Julie was right. Normally, cleaning was one of the things she avoided instead of volunteering to do. This was different, however, because she and the rest of her class were spending the day at Seven Seas Beach as part of their schools Coastal Cleanup Day. I cant wait to see the water and the waves, said Rosa, and Julie agreed. The beach is one of my favorite places in the whole world. Both of the girls were shocked when they arrived at Seven Seas Beach and saw all of the litter lining the shore. They had had no idea it was this bad. Armed with large plastic trash sacks and wearing their protective gloves, Julie, Rosa, and the other students made their way along the sand picking up all of the trash. Over the next few hours, they found everything from glass soda bottles and old grocery bags, to food wrappers and plastic cups. By the end of the day, the volunteers had picked up several hundred pounds of trash and cleaned over two miles of coastline. Now, thats more like it, said Julie, looking back at the beach. This time, the girls were able to see the beauty of the sparkling water and the glistening sand instead of the mess. Well, I learned one important thing today, said Julie with a chuckle. If I can do this much cleaning in one afternoon, my room should only take an hour!

Hello, new pen pal! I have heard that Puerto Rico is a wonderful place to live since it is part of Hawaii. I would like to travel there one day because I have never been to a foreign country. What countries are next to you? Do you enjoy going outside to play in the snow?

Your letter was great! It made me laugh. Puerto Rico is not part of Hawaii. Its not even anywhere close to it! It is actually in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is an island so the closest places to me are other islands. Although it is not attached to the United States, it is part of it. Therefore, I am a U.S. citizen, just like you! As for snow, I have never seen it. I know Alaska is covered in snow. Do you live in an igloo and see lots of polar bears? Do you sport fur coats when you go ice fishing? I wish I could wear winter clothes, but its always warm here.

Wow, I sure have a lot to learn about Puerto Rico! Thank you for explaining things to me. I also had to laugh at your letter because Alaska is not like you imagine. I live in the city of Fairbanks and no one lives in igloos; plus I have never seen a polar bear or attempted ice fishing. I do see a lot of snow, but there are sunny, warm times of the year here, too. We are lucky because we get to become friends and learn more about the world at the same time!
Sincerely, Jeff
