An industrial undertaking in which the investment in fixed assets in plant and machinery whether held on ownership terms on lease or on hire purchase does not exceed Rs 10 million. The small scale sector has played a very important role in the socio-economic development of the country during the past 50 years. The performance of the small scale sector, therefore, has a direct impact on the growth of the overall economy.

Worldwide, the micro and small enterprises (MSEs) have been accepted as the engine of economic growth and for promoting equitable development. The MSEs constitute over 90% of total enterprises in most of the economies and are credited with generating the highest rates of employment growth and account for a major share of industrial production and exports. In India too, the MSEs play a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of the country. It is estimated that in terms of value, the sector accounts for about 39% of the manufacturing output and around 33% of the total export of the country. Further, in recent years the MSE sector has consistently registered higher growth rate compared to the overall industrial sector. The major advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost. As per available statistics, this sector employs an estimated 31 million persons spread over

INDUSTRY PROFILE
INTRODUCTION TO EVENT MANAGEMENT

Event management refers to methods of outsourcing business occasions, social occasions, or a combination of both. There is no limit to the business development ideas for an event management business. It is possible to organize every kind of event ranging from wedding to a political rally. An event management team can be retained for any type of business meeting.

It involves a lot of hard work, long hours, odd hours, travelling to various places. Sometimes the preparations can go on endlessly for days together. If you are in charge, you ought to supervise and be sure that things are going on in accordance. On the event day itself you have to make sure that the celebrities arrive on time, their needs are looked after, the media is planned, the suppliers have provided the resources, meetings have been scheduled and solutions have been provided.

Event management is now conducted not only at national levels but at international levels too. With liberalization the influx of foreigners have made the field even competitive. Today there exists competition from local to international conglomerates. It is here that the efficient and creative will survive.

Event management is a colossal institution. It involves layers of personnel who professionalize in different tasks. Corporate event management, product launch, road shows, celebrity shows etc. are a few of them.

To make an event a grand success the people behind the curtains turn days into nights until they are sure of the seamless flow of the show. The result, a grand success..

EXTERNAL FACTORS AFFECTING EVENT MANAGEMENT BUSINESS:

Several external factors also affect the growth of the event management industry. Some of these factors are the rate of the growth of economy, lifestyle, and changing characteristics of the people living in the area. Tourism and branding activities like festivals and corporate activities such as conferences, product launches, award ceremonies, and gala dinners are under the scope of event management business. Key factors for the success of an event management business are reputation, network, service promotion, links with the suppliers, and high quality managerial skills.

EVENT MANAGEMENT IN INDIA

The economy of India is growing by leaps and bounds and there are various ever-growing industries that are contributing to increasing the nations coffers. One such industry is that of event management. This industry has come a long way in the

last five years or so and today is no less than a multi-crore industry, as a whole. And the size of the companies varies from the rather small ones that manage small events such as birthdays and weddings, to the larger players, who organize national and international events. During the early part of the 1900s the industry had spent up to Rs. 20 Crores, per annum on events. And in the last couple of years, all the event companies are spending to the tune of approximately Rs. 1,800 Crores, per annum.

The event management industry in India involves the requirement of various skills that have caused it grow the way it is in recent past. These skills include:

Organizational skills Technical knowledge Public relations Marketing Advertising Catering Logistics Decor Glamour identity Human relations

PROCESS

Understanding of laws and licenses Risk management Budgeting Study of all allied media Local and national, as well as international events

The management of events calls, largely for coordination, from stage one. The first thing required is to get the orders for the event. This process is also known as pitching for an event. Usually, whether it is for small time events (birthday parties and weddings), or then for the larger ones assigned by companies (exhibitions and trade fairs), or then the international concerts; the event manager/company is asked to submit a project report, with the finances involved. On the basis of this is the assignment given to them.

CAREERS IN EVENT MANAGEMENT

Off late event management has been considered as an exciting career option. In fact, until five to six years ago there were not too many event management companies, and as industry the turn over was no more than 18 Crores, in the early 90s.

However, things began to change and by the end of the financial year 2007-2008, the industry is expected to be worth no less than 1800 Crores.

Careers in event management seem to be alluring more and more youth. In fact, even homemakers have stepped into the industry and organize small and private events in their spare time. Also, there are event management companies that that take on consultants, who work with them on a freelance basis, as and when the need arises. Thus there is a lot of scope in the field of event management. And the event manager jobs are ever increasing.

Earlier one was employed and learnt the ropes of the trade on the job. But now there are vocational courses diploma and degree in this field. These courses provide theoretical information, which then is implemented during the internship period. And on the completion of the course, one is almost like any other seasoned event manager.

One can also select a few areas of event specialization that include :

Fashion shows Musical concerts Corporate seminars Product launching

INTRODUCTION

The questionnaire was prepared and distributed to 50 people. Due to time constraint, our research was limited to Bangalore. The following is the pattern of respondents: 41 students 3 teachers 1 counselor 1 business man 4 housewives

The main reason for having majority of the respondents as students was that the probability of them becoming our client base in future is comparatively greater. Another reason for the same is that they are much aware of the present trends and will respond accordingly.

The 50 respondents were chosen as our sample population, which according to us, acts as the most heterogeneous part of our population as a whole. This sample population is assumed to be a good and efficient representative of the population of India.

According to the analysis done by us, a greater weightage is given to wedding planners because they organise things better & professionally. Out of the 50 people, 11 of them feel that wedding planners are important to allow the people to spend more time with their families; 28 feel that they are better organizers; whereas 24 of them feel that they reduce stress and 5 feel that they help to keep up the status in society. Among all of them, a few have chosen 2-3 options, which shows that they feel that its not one reason only to choose a wedding planner. Hence we will try having an edge over the others in all the 4 aspects. We also will have as many efficient personnel to handle the weddings in the best possible manner.

Thus from the above data we interpret that majority of them think the duration of a wedding is 2-6 days. This question having a multiple choice answer, is quite different to interpret. Here people had to choose many options given to them. Venue booking is given importance by 39 of the total people i.e. 78%

feel that wedding planners must provide the service of venue booking. Accommodation is another important service because 40 people think

that this should be provided by the wedding planners. Dcor has been opted by 39 of them which mean that out of the total

population, 78% feel that we should provide them with dcor. This dcor consists of flower decoration, stage decoration, room decoration, etc.

Local transport has been thought to be important by 37 people, i.e., 74%

of the population. Catering as a service of the wedding planner has been opted by 44 of

them. This shows that 88% people want the wedding planners to provide catering with the other services. Photography has also been chosen by 88% of the respondents. Entertainment has been the choice of 43 people which consists of 86%

of the population. Ticket booking does not seem to attract many of them. It has been opted

by only 24 of the people which are only 48% of the population. Bangle makers, another service which is of least importance. Only 15 of

them, i.e., 30%, would want such services along with the others. Counseling is another important service which we intend to provide. But

the respondents do not feel its importance. Only 14 of them want us to provide a counseling service. 17 of them only feel that portrait makers are required in a wedding. Only

34% of the population wants this service. Gifts for the guests have been chosen by only 44% of the population.

This shows the lack of interest of the people towards this service. Hair braiding has been chosen by 20 of them, which consists of 40% of

the population.

Chocolate fountain being the most important service when children are

concerned has been chosen by 18 people only. This means that only 36% wants this service. Mehendi as a service has been opted by 42 people. This comprises of

84% of the population. Beauty package service has also been chosen as a service by 39 of them

i.e., 78% of the total population. Other services, was an optional answer. 6 of them have marked this and

have also given their suggestion for the same. To mention a few- photo studio, holiday package, designers, invitation cards, nuptial services, tattoo makers, etc.

From this analysis we come to the conclusion that most of the services will be provided in the weddings and also that, a choice will be given to our client for the same. The services which have gained maximum positive reply will be taken care of in the most in depth form.

Star hotels are preferred by 17 out of the 50; deluxe hotels by 11; choultry by 3 people and resorts by 21 people. This abrupt figure is reached to because 2 of the respondents wanted two types of hotels for the same wedding. From this analysis we have finalized that we will have more tie ups with resorts & star hotels.

INTERPRETATION
The study was conducted on the people residing in Bangalore and majority of them belonging to the age group of 18-25 years. The outcome of this study was that most of them wanted to outsource their wedding so that all aspects of the wedding are organized in a more systematic manner. The demand for outdoor weddings being higher, we plan to have tie ups with majority of such venues.

Most of them having the budget of 10-50 lakhs have helped us to target the upper middle class and niche strata of the society; we have to emphasis on the quality of service to be provided.

The study made us realize that the project we have chosen is feasible. Hence we will strive our best to fulfill and satisfy our customers.

These people are the ones who are new to the place & require guidance for weddings and events so big. We see the biggest opportunity to render our services to the same. Bangalore has the highest number of software companies in India-212, followed by Hyderabad - 108, Pune - 97 and most of its population is the working class. This is another reason which attracted us. Our clientele also consists of the corporates who have a very hectic schedule and hence do not find time to take the burden of big events such as a wedding. Bangalore has a booming wedding market. The city also provides all the resources needed for the establishment of such business. The cost of living indent of Bangalore is quite high and the people here tend to spend lavishly weddings, fill these facts make Bangalore the ideal place to start our Business.

QUALITY TESTING PROCEDURE

Our business being that of a service provider, it is very difficult for us to prepare quality standards and work according to the same. Also, it is very difficult to have pre

determined standards for quality control in event management industry. Hence we decided that we will appoint 2 supervisors who will take care of the quality of service provided at each step.

PRE WEDDING The client would be shown each and every materialistic thing before placing the order and if he is satisfied with the stuff, then we would place the order. As soon as orders are placed with different service providers, the 2 appointed people will guide them with the required information and if required, with the required resources. Then at every step taken by the contractors, we will check out the level of the work and ask them to proceed only if they work satisfactorily. These supervisors will not be present with the contractors at each point of time, they will meet them only when required.

DURING WEDDING Once the venue and the day is decided our supervisors will decide the time to report at the venue and all the people to whom we have outsourced our work will also report there. Then the supervisors will see to it that they do their work properly and will also guide them in doing so. This will help us to maintain a certain level of standard and also minimize mishaps. Once the supervisors approve the work, the client or any of his substitute will be called for pre checking. This would happen a day before or few hours before the wedding according to the requirement. The changes, if

any would be made instantly. Apart from this, the supervisors will also keep an account of the quantity of goods brought to the venue. He has full authority to sue the contractor for not providing quality service.

POST WEDDING Once the wedding gets over, the responsibility of the supervisors does not get over. They take the feedback from our clients and ask the contractors to emphasise on those areas where the clients were not satisfied. Also, our contract with the contractor does not finish there. We place orders with them continuously as per the requirement of our new clients and hence have to stress more on these people and help them improvise in the dynamic environment. Hence, the role of these supervisors is one of the most delicate one. The success of our events depends mainly on them. This makes it important that we recruit the most responsible & efficient people. Also, when the decision to be taken is urgent, either of us will report to the place immediately & take the best & most appropriate action.

Once the client chooses a few among the various services provided, they also have the freedom to order for other services not mentioned earlier. They can come up with their own ideas & help us nurture. We will see to it that all the necessary services will be provided to each of our client & tuned according to their requirements.

After all this is decided, we have the knowledge of approximate cost & hence we will take advance from the clients. This will differ for each person from as low as 15% to as high as 60% of the approximate expenses.

STEP 2- CO-ORDINATING The next step is that of co-ordination. Our task does not get over with the selection of contractors, we need to place orders with each kind of person. Hence the process of co-ordination starts where that of planning ends. It is as follows: o Selecting Vendors for the various products and Services required- Our

clients will mention the kind of service required & in most cases even the service provider. It then becomes our duty to match the requirements to that of the provider & select the contractor. This is done due to the freedom given to us by our clients. o Estimation of Costs and Reports to the Clients- Matching up all the

clients requirements, choosing the contractor, etc gives us the idea of the total expenses to be incurred for the event. We then jot down the total expenses & make an approximate report of the same. Then send a report to our clients & wait for their final approval. o Food Tasting- The exact menu for the wedding will be decided by both

the client & our supervisor. On a pre- mentioned date, they both will go to the caterer

& taste the various dishes & then finalise the menu. They will also guide the caterer if required regarding the changes to be made (if any). o Booking of venues- According to the pre informed requirements, we

will book the venue/s for the wedding. o Booking Of Accommodation- We will choose among the various

accommodation, the one choosing our customers requirement & book the same. o Signing Contracts- this is a very important task of our business. We will

not only sign contracts with our customers, but also with the service providers. The contracts will contain all the details of the particular contract & the rules & regulations to be abided by. This will mark the materialistic beginning of our project. This is the 1st evidence of our contract. o Detailing the entire Wedding plan- All the services will be outsourced

by us. Our next task is to put the whole wedding plan into papers. The detailed wedding plan will be prepared. This will contain the minutest details. This will then be approved by our clients. This is nothing but the blue print of the wedding day. A dream which will be conceptualized soon. o Organizing people and establishing their roles- After the preparation of

detailed wedding plan, we can derive the total manpower required & work on arranging for them too. Each of the contractor will be assigned some task or the other & will be asked to report to the venue of the event few hours before the mark of the beginning of the event. This is done before hand so that no two tasks clash for each

person. Also this has to be done in order to check out the availability of human resource for the wedding. Another reason for the same is arranging for the required resources if deficit. o Delegation of work to the Wedding Staff- After all this, we will

delegate all the work to our staff. Then, mention the in depth details of the wedding to the supervisors as well as the various staff members of the firm Also, the supervisors will be assigned the task of handling each & every small issues smoothly. The process of coordinating ends with this step.

STEP 3- IMPLEMENTATION The work of our people does not get over with coordination. All our pre decided activities are now implemented. Till this point of time, everything was in black and white. Now the plan is brought into reality. Last Minute Details- Inspite of meeting the client ennumerable times,

we might make the mistake of forgetting some of the important tasks. Due to this arises the need of taking the last minute details from the clients. We have contacts with various contractors who would be ready to make up the last minute set up for the wedding. Final Timings- After taking up the last minute details and matching

them with the pre existing schedule, we will make changes and prepare the final report according to the will of our client.

Follow Up- Our supervisor/s will be present at the venue during the

scheduled timings & will see to it that the services are provided as desired. Ensuring that the Clients get what they planned and paid for. Creating

a Smooth and Hassle Free Wedding.
