TWO POSITION ACTION CONTROLLER ON A LINE SIMULATOR

1 Aim / excercise This exercise enables one to 1.1 . . . . . Explain the characteristic response of a two point stabilizer.
1.2 . . . . . describe the periodic response of the controlled variable or a controlled line, 2nd

Order in an automatic contol system containing a two - point 1.3 . . . . . . explain the effect of stabilizer hytersis on the response of the controller 1.4 . . . . . . interpret the effect of the delay time of the controlled line on the controller response in an automatic control system containing a 2 point stabilizer
1.5 . . . . . . Describe the effect of the setting of the reference value on the response of the

controller in a controlled line, 2nd, order , Containing a 2- point stabilizer.

4 4.1

Introduction the 2 position action controller is a non continous regulator wich switches the controller output on when the reference value is not reached or off. When the reference value is exceeded. The amplitude and frequency of the resulting oscillation from this type of regulation is dependent on the delay time constants of the line and on the controller hysteresis. The hyterisis in an electronic 2 position action controller is variable, where as , in a mechanical controller , for example , a bi metal strip , the histerisis setting cannot be changed.

5. 5.1

Exercise construct the circuit as shown in the diagaram in section 2, make the following setting : 1. Reference value , w = 5V (50%) 2. Time constant of the delay line , T1 = T2 = 5 sec.

3. Controller hyterisis = 1 V

5.2

Switch on reference value. Set the controlled line to a delay line . 1st . Order . Record the periodic response of the controlled variable and the controller output, on the plotter.

5.3 5.4 5.5

Change the controlled line to a delay line, 2nd . Order. Record the response as in 5.2 Comment on the comparison of the result of 5.2 and 5.3. Change the controlled Hysteresis to 3 V. , and repeat 5.3 . What changes are seen in the periodic response of the controlled variable ?

5.6 5.7

Set the reference Value firstly, 7 V and then 2 V . repeat the measurement as in 5.3 What changes can be seen in the response of the controller ?

6.3

For 5.4 In a delay line, 1st. Order, at t = 0s ., the e fungtion 1st . Order, is clearly seen on the response curve, whilst in the delay line, 2nd . Order, the typical starting bend is seen. In the response of the controller and the delay time of the line, can be identified. The oscillation of the controlled output shows the typical e function of delay lines, 1st and 2nd Order.

6.4

For 5.5 An increase in the controller hysteresis causes a marked increase in the oscillation amplitude of the controlled variable with a reduction in the switching frequency.

6.6

For 5.7 When the reference valus is 50% of the maximum controlled variable ( w = 5V ), no residual control deviation is apparent. This means that the reference value is equal to the value of the controlled variable oscillation. With lower values ( w= 7V ) , tje oscillation is displaced by a negative residual control deviation.
