Frederick County Report
Publishers note: In the 2008 and
2012 Presidential elections, Virgin-
ias results more closely matched
the nations than any other state.
With New Jersey Gov. Chris Chris-
tie enjoying record approval ratings
and expected to coast to re-election
in the countrys only other 2013
gubernatorial contest, the nation
will look to Virginia as a harbin-
ger of whether President Obamas
re-election was a result of a bet-
ter campaign or a sign of the na-
tion becoming more accepting of
the Democratic agenda. Tis year,
our gubernatorial election will be
national news for a bigger reason
than the fact that it is easy for the
national media to cover since it is
right next door to D.C.
It seems as if the frenzy of the
2012 election has yet to die down,
and the political environment is al-
ready fully charged here in Virginia
for next years gubernatorial battle,
shaping up to be the marquee po-
litical event in the entire coun-
try in an otherwise dull of year.
While both sides in Washington
are grappling and positioning over
the looming budget crisis, and
concerned citizens here in Virginia
rightly worry about the fscal clif
and its consequences, events are
already moving at a fast pace for
our statewide elections next fall.
Considering how closely Virginia
mirrored the national popular
vote and our now likely place as a
perennial battleground state, next
years gubernatorial election was
bound to be exciting and closely
watched. But that was before it
became clear just who the two
nominees were likely to be. Now
that we know their identities, it is
clear that the 2013 matchup will
be bitter, bruising, and viewed as a
microcosm for the nation moving
into the 2014 midterms.
On the Republican side, Lieu-
tenant Governor Bolling decided
against waging a fght for the nom-
ination after the Republican Party
decided to switch from a primary
election to a party convention. It
is widely believed that a party con-
vention tilts dramatically toward
the most conservative elements in
the party, who are largely support-
ers of Attorney General Ken Cuc-
cinelli. Seeing no plausible path to
the nomination, Bolling dropped
out of the race this week and
made it clear he was disappointed
in the change and make it even
clearer that he doubts Cuccinellis
electability in November. For the
moment, the Republican party is
rallying around the controversial
Attorney General and he appears
to be the presumptive nominee.
On the Democratic side, it has
been no secret that former Demo-
cratic National Committee Chair-
man Terry McAulife was plan-
ning on making another run at
the nomination that was denied to
him in 2009. Te real question for
the Democrats was, What Would
Marker Warner Do? Senator
Warner, already a former popular
governor, could likely have gained
both the nomination and the gen-
eral election win had he decided
to run. However, after apparently
giving it serious consideration and
prompting some speculation, War-
ner decided against it and seems
ready to run for reelection to the
Senate in 2014. Either the Senate
or the Governors Mansion could
serve as a ftting platform for a
possible 2016 Presidential run for
Warner.
With the matchup between
McAulife and Cuccinelli, the bas-
es of both parties get what they
want and political junkies get what
they love, a knock-down drag-out
brawl between two seasoned tal-
ents. However, Virginias growth
in political importance has come
about largely because of neither
political base but the presence of
a large moderate swath of voters
open to both parties and scared
by extremes. While the race will
certainly be entertaining, it is hard
to believe either candidate will en-
dear themselves to the swing vot-
ers in Northern Virginia and Rich-
mond suburbs that will decide the
election. McAulifes identifcation
with the national Democratic Party
over so many years wont necessar-
ily play in his favor in a state only
recently purple. Certainly, Mr.
Cuccinellis outspokenly conserva-
tive positions on social issues will
cause him deep and possibly fatal
problems in Fairfax and Loudon
Counties.
With a year to go, and both men
capable of raising massive amounts
of money, one thing is certain: the
respite Northern Virginia voters
thought they were going to get
from negative attack ads wont last
that much longer. Enjoy it while
you can.

Frederick County Report
Frederick County is home to
its frst and only class A winery.
Valerie Hill Vineyard and Win-
ery, in Stephens City, is a delight-
ful place to while your time away.
Te winery is owned by Joyce
and Phil Newcome, their son Ty-
ler, and friend Shawn Stefey.
Tyler and Shawn are old
friends. Tey were long inter-
ested in starting a winery. When
Joyce and Phil retired from bank-
ing and selling recreational ve-
hicles respectively, they were ap-
proached by Tyler and Shawn to
invest in their winery dream. Te
couple decided it was a great way
to invest their retirement money
Shawn did the leg work of look-
ing for the perfect location. Tey
found it at 1687 Marlboro Road.
Phil says the minute he and Joyce
drove up the tree-lined driveway
to the 1807 manor house they
knew Shawn had found the per-
fect spot.
In about 1801, Revolutionary
War Captain Peter Rust was in
the area fghting an Indian upris-
ing. He met the Widow Hickman
who was running a tavern on the
property. Te two married and
had fve children; Laura Bush is
a descendent of one of the Rust
daughters. Since the Rusts built
Valerie Hill, only fve families
have owned the property.
Te Federal style brick manor
house and 18 acres were pur-
chased in 2011. Te house was
already in good shape, so the en-
trepreneurs began renovating the
house with an eye to its becom-
ing the nucleus of the winery. All
of the rooms are designed to en-
tertain wine tasters. Each of the
six rooms has its own freplace.
Te outside also is set up for
tastings.
In May 2012, the frst Nor-
ton grapes were planted with
the help of a consultant. Te old
farm has great soil for the grapes.
All of the plants were purchased

from Chrysalis Vineyards in
Middleburg. In all, ten of the
eighteen acres will be planted
with various grape varieties.
Justin Boughti, from Veramar
Vineyards in Berryville, makes
the wines according to Valerie
Hill specifcations with Virginia
grapes. Tyler is training to be-
come a winemaker. All four own-
ers are learning the industry as
they develop the business.
Valerie Hill is currently tasting
a 2011 sauvignon blanc; a 2010
chardonnay; the Manor House
white, which is a semi-sweet
blend; a 2010 viognier; a 2011
cabernet franc; and a 2011 Stone
Chimney Red, another blend.
Come spring, petite verde and
rose grapes will be planted.
Tere is a kitchen behind the
wine tasting bar where light ap-
petizers are prepared by a ter-
rifc chef. Food choices include
artisanal cheeses, cured meats,
soup of the day, and a variety
of spreads, all chosen with the
highest quality in mind.
Te ambiance of the house and
grounds is wonderful. Its a very
comfortable place to visit, ei-
ther alone or with friends. Tere
are wine tasting dinners every
month. During the fall there are
Fireplace Fridays where fre
pits are set up outside for visitors
to enjoy. Tere is live music on
the week-ends, when local musi-
cians come and play. During nice
weather, picnics are encouraged.
Dogs and children are welcome.

Federal Beneft Paper Checks to Stop in
2013 - Sign Up for Direct Deposit
All federal beneft payments will be electronic by March 1, 2013.
People applying or federal beneft payments must choose an electronic
payment option direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to
a Direct Express Debit MasterCard card from the beginning. People
currently getting beneft checks must switch to an electronic payment
option by March 1, 2013. People who have not chosen an electronic
payment option by March 1, 2013, will receive their money after the
deadline date via the Direct Express card, so they will not experience
any interruption in payment.
Te move to all-electronic federal beneft payments provides signif-
cant savings to American taxpayers who will no longer incur the $120
million price tag associated with paper checks. Electronic payments
also are safer, easier and more convenient for beneft recipients. Te
Go Direct campaign is helping federal beneft recipients sign up for, or
transition to, electronic payments.
Why:
Both direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or a Direct Ex-
press card are safe, easy ways to get federal beneft payments.
Tey eliminate the risk of stolen checks, help protect people from f-
nancial crime and provide them more control over their money.
Direct deposit and the Direct Express card give people immediate
access to their funds from virtually anywhere.
Problems with electronic payments are fewer and measurably easier
to track and resolve than problems with mailed checks.
Who:
People who get Social Security, VA, Supplemental Security Income
(SSI), Railroad Retirement Board, Department of Labor (Black Lung)
and Ofce of Personnel Management beneft checks.
When:
Anyone applying for federal beneft payments must choose an elec-
tronic payment method from the start, while those currently receiving
paper federal beneft checks must switch by March 1, 2013.
How:
People applying for federal beneft payments must choose an elec-
tronic payment option at the time they apply for the beneft. Tis will
ensure they get their beneft payments in the safest, most reliable way
possible and avoid the inconvenience of making the switch later.
To get beneft payments by direct deposit into an existing fnancial
institution account, people should be prepared with the following in-
formation for a smooth enrollment:
Account type: checking or savings
Account number
Financial institutions routing number
To sign up for the Direct Express card, people should notify their
federal beneft agency at the time of enrollment. Once approved for
federal benefts, they will receive their Direct Express card and an in-
formation packet in the mail.
People who currently receive federal benefts by paper check, should
make the switch today to get their money a safer, more reliable way im-
mediately.
If the beneft recipient has a bank or credit union account, they
should sign up for direct deposit online, or by calling (800) 333-1795, or
visiting their local bank/credit union branch or federal beneft agency
ofce.
If the beneft recipient prefers a prepaid debit card or doesnt have a
bank account, they can call (800) 333-1795,or notify their local federal
beneft agency.

BestCare Home Care, a new
multi-services home health care
company, which brings a fresh
approach to the industry, has
moved its Winchester ofce to
130 Creekside Lane and Market-
ing Coordinator Missy Blitch is
eager for the community to know
about their comprehensive care.
Te company has its main
headquarters in Woodbridge and
BestCare in Creekside is one of
their satellite ofces. Nursing Di-
rector Betty Corey RN, and her
staf of 20 have settled into their
new space and are serving Fred-
erick, Clarke, Warren, Shenan-
doah, Page and Loudoun Coun-
ties.
We are the only one in the six-
county area to do multi-services.
Many people dont even realize
there is a company that does all
of these things. We provide such
a valuable service for so many
diferent types of people from
elderly to disabled, to those com-
ing home after a bad surgery or
accident, and more, Missy said.
She added that many also dont
realize that if they have Medicare
or Medicaid it is paid at 100 per
cent most of the time and Med-
icaid waivers are income-based
which allow people to receive
help at home.
Some people only need a little
bit of careonly for a few weeks
or months, but it also covers
long-term care, she noted.
Tey can also send one of their
skilled home health aides to
come for a few hours to help with
personal hygiene care, medicine
reminders, companionship, do a
safety or wellness check and help
with meals, or whatever may be
needed. A skilled, compassionate
person will help so other family
care-givers can have some free
time and dont have the full bur-
den on them.
According to Missy and their
website, the initial free home as-
sessment determines whether
the patient and family are eligible
for nursing services which re-
quire RN, LPN or CNA licenses
and skills, as well as occupation-
al, physical and speech therapy.
Also, were the only one that
provides wound care, said Mis-
sy.
In addition to that, a host of
other non-medical services like
light housekeeping, prepar-
ing meals, and whatever may be
needed by patients and the fam-
ily are ofered.

home as long as possible when
they need care.
According to the AARP, 90 per
cent of seniors would rather stay
in their own homes, rather than
move into a nursing home. Some
seniors need the intensive care
a nursing home provides, but
many more can and do thrive in
their own homes for longer than
might be expected, even when
faced with health and cognitive
challenges.
In fact, studies show that se-
niors in this segment of the ag-
ing population (who have health
problems that hinder their ability
to care for themselves with com-
plete independence, yet who are
not sick enough to require inten-
sive institutionalized care), tend
to live longer, healthier, more re-
warding lives if given the oppor-
tunity to stay in their homes with
skilled home care assistance,

Frederick County Report
Rob Campbell, Owner, and
manager of Sherando Family Fit-
ness Club, with a ten-year back-
ground in the ftness industry,
Marine Corps training, and the
desire to help people get ft and
stay well, believes he is destined
to succeed because of his deter-
mination to never give up.
Te family-and health-oriented
business opened Sept. 7 this year
and occupies the building which
previously housed Powerhouse
Gym. Rob has made a few im-
portant changes and he said that
comments from patrons indicate
they like them.
You guys might think the
changes are small, but its a big
deal to us, said one happy patron
and another agreed and added,
Te new name is a better ft for
this area.
More yoga classes have been
added along with others like
Zumba (a Colombian dance ft-
ness program involving dance
and aerobic elements), cross-
training, self-defense for women
and children as well as men,
and boxing. Saturday hours
have been extended and start-
ing Dec.1 massage and massage
therapy will be ofered.
Rob said he also tries to keep a
great atmosphere and to hire and
keep personnel who have a pas-
sion for the industry.
When people come in, they
fnd clean equipment that works.
Tey see someone with a smile
on their face and who can an-
swer questions, so theyll have a
great experience, he said.
Rob got into the ftness business
in 2003 as membership salesper-
son for Golds Gym in Charlotte,
South Carolina and was eventu-
ally promoted to sales manager.
For the last few years was with
Anytime Fitness in Winchester.
Tere he hired and coached per-
sonal trainers and made sure
they had clients to work with. He
is licensed with seven certifca-
tions related to ftness and nutri-
tion.
He played sports all his life,
he said, and always liked being
ft. After graduation from high
school, he joined the Marine
Corps and played football as a
running back , coaching in his
last year.
I learned about nutrition and
to do the best of my ability in the
Marine Corps, he said.
But when his father died at the
age of 50 due to issues related to
high blood pressure, it caused
him to look at the history of dia-
betes and high blood pressure in
his extended family due to poor
eating habits.
It also changed how he looked
at the ftness business.
Most of the people that I
worked with in ftness were in-
terested because of vanity. It hit
home what this is really about-
to prevent health problems and
it was a turning point. I started
working with a completely difer-
ent type of clientele, he said.
His relation to the business has
become more family-oriented,
and focused on preventive health
care. Rob is just now in the pro-
cess of planning seminars and
classes which will cover basic
information about nutrition and
health, as well as ftness.
And he makes it afordable with
rates for classes comparable or
less than others in the area.
Tere is a wide range of ways
to take and pay for classes, with
the longest contract term being
for just one year. Other options
are: no-contract; one-day passes;
short term membership with no
contract; or paying by the day.
I take pride in the fact that
I dont do bait and switch and
there are no hidden fees, he said.
Rob and his family have lived
in Stephens City for the last fve
years and like to visit family in
Baltimore and be close to Wash-
ington, D.C.
Its a great combination of city
and country here, he said, and
added, I like the growth in the
area and am happy to be part of
it, to make friends and help a lot
of people. I enjoy what I do and
have no intention of stopping
any time soon.
Some of the features ofered by
the Club are: one free class and/
or personal training session and
a 7-day free pass to all frst-time
guests; family and corporate
rates; one-class passes; and all
group exercise classes included
with membership. Tanning and
childcare have a separate fee.
From Dec.1 until Christmas
Eve, short-term membership gift
certifcates can be purchased-to
be redeemed after Christmas.
Te Grand Opening will be held
on Feb.16, 2013 with live enter-
tainment, food and drinks, prize
giveaways, and a one-day mem-
bership special.
Te words Warriors Never
Quit! underline the logo on the
webpage and this is refected in
what Rob says is his overall busi-
ness philosophy.
Te most absolute way to not
succeed is to not try at all, he
claims.

Many people harbor strong opin-
ions with regard to which type of
Christmas tree they want to pur-
chase. Some cannot live without a
natural, freshly-cut Christmas tree,
while others prefer the convenience
of artifcial trees. Tose who insist
on a natural tree might want to con-
sider the following tips when buying
whats likely their biggest decorative
item of the holiday season.
* Ask when the tree was cut down.
Precut trees may be cut down weeks
before theyre sold. So if youre buy-
ing a precut tree, chances are the
tree was cut down much earlier than
you think. Tis doesnt mean the tree
wont make it through the holiday
season, but a tree that was cut sev-
eral weeks ago should have some of
its bottom trunk removed before its
placed in the stand. Tis will make it
easier for the tree to consume water.
Tis step likely isnt necessary if the
tree was cut down the same day you
bring it home.
* Have the tree shaken before taking
it home. A tree should be shaken in
a shaker before you put it in your car
and bring it home. A shaker removes
any debris or dead needles from the
tree, which can save you the trou-
ble of cleaning up all of those dead
needles from your living room foor
later on.
* Have the tree wrapped before tak-
ing it home. A tree should also be
wrapped in twine before taking it
home. Te twine should be tight
enough to keep the trees branches
from blowing in the wind when you
attach the tree to the top of your
vehicle. If possible, keep the tree
wrapped in twine as you place it in
the stand. Tis makes the tree easier
to control.
* Choose the right location. When
looking for the right place to set up
your natural tree, its best to choose
a spot thats cool and free of drafts.
Te tree should not be placed near
heat sources, including appliances,
freplaces or vents, because such
heat sources create a safety hazard
and can make it difcult for the tree
to retain moisture. Tere should also
be ample space between the top of
the tree and the ceiling.
* Place some covering on the ground
beneath the tree. Even a freshly cut
natural tree will shed needles over
the course of the holiday season. Be-
fore placing the stand in the location
youve chosen, put some type of cov-
ering, such as a tree bag, beneath the
stand so its easier to gather all those
needles once the holiday season has
ended.
* Remember that natural trees are
thirsty. Men and women who have
never had a natural Christmas tree
in the past might be surprised at just
how thirsty natural trees get. Te
stands reservoir should have lots of
water, which should never dip below
the stump. If the water dips below
the stump, you might be forced to
cut a little more of the bottom of the
trunk to ensure the tree will make it
through the holiday season. Tat can
be a hassle once the tree has been
decorated, so be sure to check the
water in the reservoir at least once
per day to maintain adequate water
levels.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Start
preparing now to make sure you get
the credit youre due for all that effort
you put in to get that project off the
ground. A new challenge emerges
after the 15th.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
Youre still charging full steam ahead
on the job and thats fine. But take
time to share the joy of preparing for
the upcoming holidays with folks you
love.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A for-
mer detractor resists joining your ranks
just yet. Give him or her time to learn
more about what youre doing. Mean-
while, devote more time to friends and
family.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be
careful not to be goaded into a tiff by
someone who might be looking for a
fight. Remain cool as you make your
exit. Be assured that others will rally to
your support.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Kudos
on getting the well-deserved Lions
share of the rewards for a job well-
done. Now you can take a breather
from your workaday duties and spend
time with your family.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) You enjoy a quick spurt of renewed
energy just in time to meet that upcom-
ing deadline. A potentially romantic
situation looms. How it develops will
be up to you.
LIBRA (September 23 to October
22) Watch out for distractions that
could cause delays and leave you run-
ning twice as fast to finish your work
by the 15th. Then go ahead and have
fun.
SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-
ber 21) You might prefer to work on
current tasks on your own. But be open
to a potentially useful suggestion from
someone who admires you and wants
to help.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) Avoid rushing full gal-
lop into that volunteer project without
knowing whats expected of you. Take
things a step at a time as you begin to
find your way.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to Jan-
uary 19) Good news: You should begin
to feel more comfortable expressing
your emotions. This will go a long way
in helping you with that personal situ-
ation.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-
ary 18) An old friend gives confusing
signals. Best advice: Dont assume
that things will necessarily work them-
selves out. Ask questions and demand
straight answers.
PISCES (February 19 to March
20) A new relationship needs time
to develop. Be careful not to let your
emotions flood your natural sense of
caution. Meanwhile, check out that
new job offer.
BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of
right and wrong sometimes causes you
to come into conflict with others. But
you invariably come out ahead.

On Dec. 13, 1621, under the care
of Robert Cushman, the first American
furs to be exported from the continent
leave for England aboard the Fortune.
During the crossing, the Fortune was
captured by the French, and its valu-
able cargo of furs was taken. Cushman
was detained on the Ile dDieu before
being returned to England.
On Dec. 14, 1799, George Wash-
ington, the first U.S. president, dies at
age 67. Two days earlier, he rode out
into a freezing sleet to survey busi-
ness affairs on his estate. He returned
home late for a dinner engagement and
refused to take the time to change out
of his wet clothes. The next day, Wash-
ington developed a severe respiratory
infection and died the following day.
His last words were Tis well.
On Dec. 16, 1811, the greatest
series of earthquakes in U.S. history
begins in the Mississippi River Valley
near New Madrid, Mo., when a quake
of an estimated 8.6 magnitude slams
the region. The earthquake raised and
lowered parts of the Mississippi Valley
by as much as 15 feet and changed the
course of the Mississippi River.
On Dec. 10, 1915, the one-millionth
Ford car rolls off the assembly line
at the River Rouge plant in Detroit.
Between 1908 and 1927, Ford sold
more than 15 million Model Ts in all;
they initially cost $850 (about $20,000
in todays dollars).
On Dec. 11, 1946, the United
Nations votes to establish the United
Nations International Childrens
Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to pro-
vide relief and support to children.
Only two countries have failed to
ratify the treaty Somalia and the
United States.

races in a single year. Hawley achieved
his historic win aboard Charlie Jr., in
the third race at Marylands Laurel
Park race track.
On Dec. 12, 1989, hotel magnate
Leona Helmsley receives a four-year
prison sentence, 750 hours of com-
munity service and a $7.1 million tax

became the object of loathing and dis-
gust when she quipped that only the
little people pay taxes.

Heather Spencer is the photographer behind Little Birdie
Photography. A graduate of Warren County High Schools
class of 2005, she is now the mother to three young boys.
She began studying photography once her second child
was born. His father was deployed and she wanted a way
to appropriately capture his childhood. The hobby grew
into a passion and Little Birdie Photography was born. She
is self-taught and loves working with natural light. She has
recently volunteered her time and work to Front Royal Po-
lice Department. Heather loves to network with others that
share her love of photography.
When she doesnt have her big camera in hand, she is
capturing the little moments using her iPhone and the popu-
lar app Instagram. She is a breastfeeding activist and hopes
to pursue a nursing degree and become a lactation consul-
tant. To learn more about Heather and to view her work, you

James Wood High School names new Varsity Boys Soccer coach
James Wood High School has named Matt Dunsmore its new varsity boys soccer coach. For the past fve years,
Dunsmore has served as the coach of James Woods JV boys soccer team. He says, Im excited to have the opportu-
nity to continue coaching soccer at James Wood at the varsity level. During my time as the JV coach, Ive taken great
pride in seeing our younger players progress and move on to compete at the varsity level. Im looking forward to
working with our players and the school administration to continue building the soccer program at James Wood.
Dunsmore succeeds Christopher Hild who served as James Woods varsity boys soccer coach for the past four sea-
sons. Hilds teams accumulated a record of 24-37-6.
In addition to his coaching experience at James Wood High School, Dunsmore has served as a coach with Win-
chester United for the past six years. He served as an assistant coach his frst year with Winchester United and has
been a head coach the past fve years.
Dunsmore also had a distinguished career as a player. He played four years of varsity soccer as a high school stu-
dent. During three of his four years as a high school player, he represented South Dakota in the Olympic Develop-
ment Program. As a club and select soccer player, Dunsmore was part of three state championship teams in South

James Wood Principal Joe Salyer says, Coach Dunsmore has done an excellent job with our JV soccer program
the past several years. Im looking forward to seeing him move up to the varsity level and continuing to develop our
