(b) What are the advantages of solid propellant systems over the liquid propellant systems? (a) Explain the two types of propellant feed systems in liquid rockets. (b) Explain the factors influencing the suitability of these systems for a given liquid rocket engine. (a) Explain the different parts of a rocket generating significant aerodynamic forces. (b) How do they cause dispersion in the altitude and range of a rocket? Derive expressions for the burn-out velocity of a rocket: (i) flying in free space (ii) flying at constant pitch angle in homogeneous gravity field. (a) Derive an expression for the burn-out velocity of a two stage rocket in vertical flight in vacuum in a homogeneous gravity field. (b) How is the velocity affected if the flight is in atmosphere? (a) Briefly describe the different aerodynamic forces and moments acting on a rocket in flight. (b) Which among these are the forces and moments to be maximized, minimized or optimized? Explain clearly. Derive an expression for the burn-out range of a rocket following gravity turn in a homogeneous gravity field. Explain all the assumptions very clearly. (a) Draw the sketch of a two stage rocket and explain all the parts. (b) Derive an expression for the burn-out velocity of a two stage rocket. Explain all the assumptions clearly. (b) Explain the procedures available for the estimation of drag of a rocket. (a) In the context of assessing rocket flight what is the difference between free space and homogeneous gravitational field. How do they differ from the normal understanding of gravity? (b) Derive an expression for the burn-out altitude of a rocket flying in a homogeneous gravity field, assuming constant pitch angle. (a) Explain, clearly, the requirement for staging in rockets. (b) A two stage rocket carries 4 kg payload. The structural masses of the two stages are 80 kg and 20 kg respectively. They carry 400 kg and 40 kg of propellant in the two stages. The specific impulse of the propellants is 285 seconds. What is the velocity of the payload at the burn-out of the second stage? Explain with the help of neat sketches, different ways of controlling the direction of thrust in a rocket. Explain the different systems used in stage separation. Draw neat sketches. What are the ranges of temperatures which the different parts of a rocket are exposed to in flight? Describe the materials that are required to manufacture these parts.
