We will review each of these sections throughout the guide.

Degree Navigator – An “Island” Overview

Degree Navigator uses an island concept to display different programs of
study and academic progress towards those offerings. This means each
degree requirement is an island as are groups of courses within a
program of study.
Top Level
X (Disciplines)
This level represents
search islands, which
are typically groups of
program offerings. You
would click one of
these to view a specific
program of study.

Y 2nd Level
(Program
Offerings)
This level represents
related program
offerings for the
selected program of
study.

Z 3rd Level
(Course
Requirements)
The 3rd level
represents the courses
required to complete a
program of study.

[ Final Level
By clicking on one of
the islands in the final
level, you can see the
course designator of
the individual’s
required courses.

Viewing Your Program of Study

To view your program of study, click the My Programs button at the top of
the screen. Notice the screen defaults to the undergraduate programs of
study.

Follow the same steps to change the view back to Undergraduate.

Please note it is not necessary to display specific program offerings to view

your individual program(s).

Interpreting (Viewing) Academic Progress

Viewing your degree completion progress is easy! Simply click the Academic
Progress button at the top of your screen.

Each island represents a set of courses as outlined in the catalog: Core,

Program Specific, Electives and Capstone (For Graduate).

Academic Progress Screen

The courses (disks) on each island are the courses you must choose from to
complete the requirement.

Courses (disks)

In the screenshot below, you’ll notice there is a number assigned to each

island. These numbers represent either the number of courses or the number
of credits required to satisfy the degree requirements.

Sometimes when viewing your academic progress, you may see a WV-Elect
Island appears. This happens if you waived any courses and must take
electives to replace them. If you have not waived any courses, this island will
not appear at all (Graduate Only).

Graduate Students Only

The number shown in the pie chart illustrates the number of credits required
to complete the program.

If you had successfully completed any courses this number would have the
number of courses complete in front, for example “40/45”.

By clicking anywhere on one of the programs will raise the course tower,
stack of all courses, as shown below. This allows you to see the individual
course designators that make up the tower.

meaning. The list below provides an explanation of what each means. Notice
they are also marked numerical in the illustration.

Unused Stack
At left of the screen in the course status panel is a set of unused courses. The
courses that make up this category are not applicable to the degree in which
you are enrolled:

• Requisite Skills Courses, i.e. GM400, IS525, MTH090, ENGL034

• Failed or Withdrawn (Incomplete) Courses

• Courses that do not apply to the current program, may apply to

other programs in which you are enrolled.

Selected Courses
A selected course(s) is a course you plan to take in an upcoming term, for
example (insert example). If a course is selected, it is shown as a green disk
in Degree Navigator.

Important Note: Selecting a course does not register you or reserve

a seat for you in that course. You will still need to follow the
procedures establish at your campus/center to register in person
or through Student Self Service.

This feature of Degree Navigator is a useful tool to assist you with planning
out your remaining courses.

Page 12

The steps to selecting a course are similar to those discussed above for
viewing a course description.

Follow the steps illustrated in the screens below.

course, click on the course
disk and click Select.

The screen below will appear.

You will see a reminder message stating
by selecting the course you are NOT
registered for the course.

This was explained earlier in this section, but to reiterate, if you have waived

until you have replaced all waived courses.
