WEEE and RoHS Compliant

This includes compliance with Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) (Combined WEEE/RoHS) requirements now mandated in Europe, and being adopted in other parts of the world. Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) 2002/95/EC mandates: Recycling of devices at end of life and the elimination or reduction of a list of hazardous substances. This includes six key hazardous materials typically used in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium (chromium VI or Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) 2002/96/EC sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods. The directive imposes the responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) on the manufacturers of such equipment. The companies are compelled to use the collected waste in an ecological-friendly manner, either by ecological disposal or by reuse/refurbishment of the collected WEEE. Under WEEE "Users of electrical and electronic equipment from private households should have the possibility of returning WEEE at least free of charge"

Standard ADC Device Controller Configurations

Two standard configurations are offered based on the current versions of ADC software:

both cases, the RS-422 connections from the Device Controller are connected to relay panels, which are able to simultaneously switch all RS-422 links at one time.

The relay panels have internal jumpers that must be correctly set for the appropriate mode of operation. A label is applied to the outside of the panel indicating the configuration as shipped, but care must be taken to ensure that the jumpers are properly set if the system is reconfigured. In situations where a customer-supplied switching method, such as a data router, is used, it is the customers responsibility to determine the appropriate method of wiring the serial connection. For additional information on wiring of the RS-422 connection, reference document ADC Cabling Standards.

About Single Device Controller in the system If there is only a single Device Controller in the system, or the Device Controllers are not in redundant pairs, for 8-Port Serial card RJ-11 adapters are provided and for 16Port Serial Cards 68-way high density adapters are provided to terminate the serial cables in a DB-9. An optional bulkhead panel for mounting in the rear of the rack may be purchased from Harris. For more information regarding cabling requirements and pinouts reference document, ADC Cabling Standards.

CHP Processor seating

Even though the processor card has a retaining bracket at the rear, the end of the edge connector furthest from the bracket can become unseated from the motherboard during shipping. It is therefore advisable to ensure the card is seated properly while installing other peripheral cards during the chassis setup. This avoids incidents of CHP CPUs refusing to boot-up first time on site.

8-Port Serial Card

8-Port Serial Card

About the 8-Port Serial Card
In addition to standard, fixed cards, ADC automation systems also install serial cards in the Device Controller chassis. This ADC serial board has 8 serial ports, each utilizing an RJ14 connector. ADC controls devices via an RS-422 connection with these ports. The number of boards installed is directly related to the number of devices that need to be controlled. Up to 8 serial cards may be installed for a maximum of 128 ports. IMPORTANT NOTE ON 8-PORT & 16-PORT CARDS: 8-Port and 16-Port serial cards cannot be mixed in the same chassis. Only configurations in which all of the serial cards installed within a single chassis are of the same type are supported. However, within a facility any combination of 8 and 16 port cards may be used without restriction.

Drivers
8 port cards use a Windows driver that can be uniquely identified by normal Windows hardware installation processes. For the 8 port card, the driver files are: PCISer2K.inf PCISer2K.sys

Once installed, the card used is completely transparent to ADC.

Harris 8-Port Serial Card Configuration

The Harris 8-port serial card must be configured for the proper serial ports. The cards should be numbered in order and there should be no duplicates. If a board is misconfigured, all remaining boards will remain functional, except any duplicate boards after the initial board will be ignored.

Switches 1-3 define the serial ports for that card.

16-Port Serial Card

16-Port Serial Card

About the 16-Port Serial Card
In addition to standard, fixed cards, ADC automation systems also install serial cards in the Device Controller chassis. This ADC serial board has 16 serial ports, each utilizing an 68-way high density (VHDCI) connector. ADC controls devices via an RS422 connection with these ports. The number of boards installed is directly related to the number of devices that need to be controlled. The PCI serial controller card implements 16 full duplex serial channels with RS422/RS485 I/O and a standard PCI 3.0 interface to the host processor. All serial channels allow user setup of standard UART parameters including number of data bits, parity, stop bit, and baud rate.

The card includes 256 x 1 character FIFOs implemented for the transmitter and 512 x 1 character FIFOs implemented for the receiver for each of the serial ports. Connectivity to the serial ports is made via a single multi-pin connector to be defined separately. RS422 Receiver Termination: Individual fixed surface mounted 121 ohm +/- 5% terminations are provided on the card for the RS422 receive signals. Power Supply: Power for the PCI Serial Controller card is drawn from the +3.3V PCI connector power pins. The PRSNT1# and PRSNT2# pins are grounded indicating the card is present and demands a maximum of 7.5 Watts- dependent on the actual requirement of the final design. The card contains two FPGA configuration EEPROMS programmable through a JTAG interface. One part contains the configuration for the ADC mode and the other contains the configuration for the Standard Serial Comms.

16-Port Serial Card Configuration

In addition to standard, fixed cards, ADC automation systems also install serial cards in the Device Controller chassis. This ADC serial board has 16 serial ports, each utilizing an 68-way high density (VHDCI) connector. ADC controls devices via an RS-422 connection with these ports. The number of boards installed is directly related to the number of devices that need to be controlled. Up to four 16-Port serial cards may be installed in a chassis for a maximum of 64 ports. The 32Bit/33MHz PCI bus is the interface between the serial ports and the system computer. The card installs in a standard PCI 3.0 compliant motherboard with 3.3V signaling environment. The card supports standard PnP functionality by implementation of the standard PCI configuration space. Supported commands are Memory Read, Memory Write, Configuration Read, and Configuration Write.

Drivers
16 port cards use a Windows driver that can be uniquely identified by normal Windows hardware installation processes. For the 16 port card the driver files are: PCISer16.inf PCISer16.sys

Once installed, the card used is completely transparent to ADC.

PCI Interrupts
PCI interrupts are not used in ADC mode

Table of Switch Settings

The Harris 16-port serial card must be configured for the proper serial ports. The cards should be numbered in order and there should be no duplicates. If a board is mis-configured, all remaining boards will remain functional, except any duplicate boards after the initial board will be ignored. An 8 position DIP switch is present on the card and is used to set the system port addresses and mode (ADC/D-Series). This register is read by the CPU and allows the application to set physical port locations to the dynamic address assigned to the card base address register by the operating system. The DIP switch setting is echoed in the Subsystem ID location of the configuration space.

Switches 1-3 define the serial ports for that card. Switch 4 is reserved for factory testing. Switches 5-8 are reserved for future use.

Using Fanout Cables

Instead of the individual RJ-11 cables for each port, a single fanout cable is provided with each card. This cable allows a single connection to the board, while providing individual RJ-11 connection, with the same pinout as the 8 port card, at the other end. The design of the cables allows this to be accomplished without splices within the length of the cable. This approach greatly reduces the number of cables, simplifies the installation, connection, labeling, and dressing of cables, and improves the overall cabling to the CHP chassis. It does so without reducing the flexibility, as each port remains individually available and retains compatibility with all existing connections and documentation.

Determining Ports on the Fanout Cable

The 8 port card was supplied with individual RJ-11 cables, which were unlabeled. This allowed the labeling of the cables according to each sites standards. Due to the need to identify the individual ports of the 16 port fanout cable, they are manufactured with labels on each of the individual RJ-11 connectors. As the same cable would be used for all of the cards in a chassis, each port is labeled with both a number and a letter, with I and O omitted to avoid confusion with the numerals 0 and 1. Customer supplied labels can then be applied to identify the position of the VHDCI connector and each of the RJ-11 connectors.

Using Longer Fanout Cables

The standard cables provided are 7 ft (210 cm) in total length, with a 3 ft (90 cm) portion a single cable from the VHDCI connector, carrying all 16 ports, and the remaining 4 ft (120 cm) individual cables for each port. 16 ft (485 cm) cables, with the single cable portion correspondingly longer, will also be available as a standard length if needed and can be specified at the time of the initial order. If a custom length is required, these can be manufactured at an additional cost and will have to be specified with sufficient advance notice.

Making your Own Fanout Cables

The VHDCI connector is extremely high density, requiring specialized tooling for making connections, and the construction of the fanout involves re-jacketing of conductors within the length of the cable. The user assumes any risks involved in the use of cables other that those supplied by Harris. It is strongly suggested that Harris supplied cables be used to fan out from the 16 port cards VHDCI connecter to relay panels or RJ-11 bulkhead connectors, and locally supplied wiring be used from that point. However, all of the signal, pinout, and connection data can be provided for the fabrication of cabling or other connections.

GPI Card

GPI Card
About the GPI Card
In addition to standard, fixed cards, and configuration specific serial cards, ADC automation systems also install GPI cards in the Device Controller chassis. The GPI (General Purpose Interface) Card used by the ADC playout automation system can have up to 8 input and 8 output GPI connections.

Eight Form C relays can switch and carry 2A loads making it suitable for latching power, data or other electronic signals for control applications. Eight optically isolated inputs (rated for 5-30V) allow monitoring of off board switch closures, relays or for any other general purpose monitoring needs.

A maximum of four GPI boards may be installed, for a total of 32 input and 32 output GPIs, but not all are usable.

The actual number of GPI Inputs supported varies due to software restrictions. In current versions of ADC software, only the first 16 GPI inputs- those on the first two GPI cards- are usable.

This card is optimized for 24V DC/AC usage and is PCI bus specification 2.1 compliant.

GPI Inputs (for triggering lists)

The GPI inputs on the first two cards are used to trigger lists with the inputs on card 1 controlling lists 1-8 and the inputs on card 2 controlling lists 9-16. The mapping of each GPI input to a particular list is fixed and the inputs on cards 3 and 4, if installed, are not used. The GPI card requires a voltage across the input in order to trigger it and the GPI breakout panel can be used to supply this voltage. This allows a contact closure to act as a list trigger. By default, the panel is supplied already configured to utilize its own power supply. For each input, there is a pair of jumpers that may need to be configured.

GPI Card

If the trigger itself supplies a voltage, the jumpers can be set to pass it to the card. The inputs will trigger on the leading edge of a pulse of either polarity, as shown in the following examples: I

GPI Connector Pinouts

It is expected that all GPI wiring will be done using the supplied breakout panel to facilitate both wiring and supplying power for input triggering. In most (almost all) cases, the supplied cable is used to connect the GPI card to the supplied breakout panel, thus eliminating the need to break directly into the connector's pinout. For reference the following pinouts of the PCI HD GPI card connectors is provided. IMPORTANT: Only PCI footprint cards are used in the new Device Controller Chassis.

LTC Time Code Card

LTC Time Code Card

About the Time Code Card
For an ADC playout automation system installation the Device Controller chassis comes with an LTC Time Code card installed. The time code input provides a reference for synchronizing operation to your house clock system.

It is recommended that no daylight savings time offset be applied to the time code, especially in environments where lists in multiple time zones are controlled. In NTSC environments, it is essential that this be a drop frame source.

Time code input

The time code input requires output HIGH and LOW from a SMPTE/EBU time code source.

This is a balanced signal with a floating ground. The cable shield is not used. The TC reader card can accept an input signal from +1.4Vpp to +2.8Vpp.

To Install the Mating Connector on the Time Code Cable

The TC/Sync board has a Mini-XLR audio connector installed for the time code input, and one mating connector is supplied. The following steps explain how to properly install the mating connector on the time code cable: NOTE: Although quite durable, once installed, this connector is easily damaged and care should be taken. If the connector is damaged, contact your Project Manager for a replacement.

Step 1

Action Unscrew the black plastic hood from the back of the connector then slip it over the end of the audio cable you will be using. Make sure that the threaded end of the hood is closest to the end of the cable. Pull the 4-fingered cable clamp assembly out of the Mini-XLR connector body then slip it over the end of the audio cable. Make sure that the black plastic end of the cable clamp assembly is closest to the end of the cable. Gently tap or push the pin block out of the Mini-XLR connector shell then carefully fill each of the three solder cup pins with solder. Being careful not to cut any of the soft copper conductors, prepare the end of your audio cable by cutting back the outer insulation and shield by 11mm (7/16"). Then strip the end of each wire back by 3mm (1/8") and then thin the end of each wire. We recommend that the ground connection be insulated and left unattached. Note the tiny pin numbers molded into the pin block face. When making the ground connection, sweat solder your ground wire to the pin 1 solder cup. Note that this pin is recessed slightly with respect to the other two pins (will always make the ground connection first). Sweat solder your "LTC+" wire to the pin 2 solder cup (this is the pin farthest away from the flat side of the pin block). Sweat solder your "LTC-" wire to the pin 3 solder cup (the only one left). Push the pin block back into the Mini-XLR connector shell, noting the alignment key that engages the slot in the shell then slide the cable clamp assembly firmly into place. Use pliers to clamp the four fingers around the cable (this keeps it from pulling out) then screw the black plastic hood onto the Mini-XLR connector.

Video Sync
A video reference signal to the Time Code Card must be provided. The signal may be black burst or bars that are locked to house sync. Although this board is used to lock the system to vertical sync, a composite sync signal must be provided. To connect the video reference to the Device Controller, simply connect the coaxial cable (providing the video signal) to the sync boards standard BNC connector.
