Dr Serge Engamba, Yaounde/Cameroon MSc Public Health and Partnerships in Care The MSc Public Health and Partnerships in Care programme gives me the highly sought after knowledge in Public Health, however it also provides a useful insight into social care and social sciences which I was also looking for. To my opinion, appropriate health care cannot be achieved if it is not considered along with the social setting in which it deemed to take place. While I looked for universities last year I found that Swansea offered one of the cheapest tuition fees for the programme I was interested in. For that reason I was expecting a lower standing of teaching and overall student experience. But I must say I was really impressed by the setting and assistance I received. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high standing student experience at an affordable cost. The friendly attitude of teaching staff was a highlight for me and I enjoyed the synergy and continuous link established between health and social care. I hope to pursue a PhD in health science at Swansea University.

Swansea University offered the kind of experience that not only suited my personal needs but also professional goals. No doubt, the training at the Swansea University offers me a platform for career advancement and a competitive edge over other professionals in a field (public health) that presents an abundance of job opportunities to suit a variety of interests and skills.

Olive Mtema, Malawi MSc Research Methods in Psychology Olive Mtema was a Commonwealth sponsored student and graduated from the Masters in Public Health and Partnerships in Care in 2007. She returned to Malawi in January 2008 and is making an impact in a difficult and sensitive area. As Policy and Advocacy Advisor for Futures Group, Olive organised a two-day conference that focussed on the planning and prevention of HIV/AIDS among Muslim communities in Lilongwe, Malawi through appropriate Islamic teachings. The conference was such a success that USAID, the Ministry of Health and other development partners promised to use the conferences resolutions as bases for future health programs with Muslims populations. Olive said, All the modules we studied on the Masters in Public Health and Partnerships in Care helped to shape us to be leaders in public health, who are able to conduct research and generate evidence for effective programme implementation. Discussion as a mode of teaching and learning provided us with an opportunity to widely explore public health issues from both European and international perspective. It was very informative and home students had chance to learn from us how different public health issues in UK are from developing countries like those in Africa.

Anita Ren, China MSc Research Methods in Psychology It has been great experience studying Psychology in Swansea University. I have completed both BSc degree and MSc Research Methods in Psychology at Swansea University in the past 4 years. The learning environment was great and the staff members of the psychology department were very friendly and helpful. The department has given extra attention to us international students; a mentor helped us with study skills by proof reading our coursework etc. The MSc research course provided us with both theoretical and practical research skills. I got to work on different types of projects that cover a wide variety of topics.

All the modules we studied on the Masters in Public Health and Partnerships in Care helped to shape us to be leaders in public health.

Francis Kapapa, Zambia MSc Public Health and Health Promotion Before I came to study at Swansea University, I did a BA in Sociology and Public Administration at the University of Zambia, which I completed in 2005. I chose to come to study at Swansea because I was encouraged by the efficiency and effectiveness in communication. I am a trained teacher with a certificate and diploma in education. I taught as a Zambia Air Force teacher for fifteen years at primary and secondary level of education before studying Sociology and Public Administration. During this time, I was involved in community work as a project coordinator, taking care of the chronically ill patients of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis including orphans for nine years. I resigned after twenty years to join Bwafwano Community Home Based Care (HBC) Project as the Integrated HBC Coordinator. My main role was to coordinate activities of the orphans, HIV/AIDS patients and TB patients. I held this position for four months before coming to Swansea in September 2007. Luckily, Michael Kelly Bursary Committee, under Zambia National AIDS Network, offered me sponsorship out of thousands of applicants to study abroad! The Placement Module was the best experience for me. Issues that concern children and the youth are of great concern and passion for me. I had an opportunity to talk to and visit one home of foster parents in Swansea who take care of the Looked After Children. The aim of the placement was to observe and compare the care of the Looked After Children with the HIV/ AIDS orphans in Zambia. It was also an opportunity for me to share good practice to improve the care of these children. One of the important lessons learnt from this placement was how it linked to health promotion activities through partnerships in order to improve access and quality care for children. I also learnt that patience and presence for the children were virtues in care. It was a fantastic experience.

Andrea Bozza, Niagara Falls, Canada MSc Abnormal and Clinical Psychology After completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology and History in Canada, Andrea Bozza wanted to continue her Psychology education to give her the best start in a related career. After researching Swansea, it seemed like an amazing community to be a part of. The University was diligent in responding to my questions, and had tons of information regarding programs, events and clubs to be a part of. I am studying for an MSc in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology, which is incredibly specified and perfect for the career I would like to get in to. The professors and students have been so welcoming and the student accommodation has been a particular highlight. It has allowed me to meet an incredible variety of people. The course is perfect for developing knowledge and skills for my chosen career. Each week presents new lecturers, specialised in their particular field of study, who bring such a passion and depth of knowledge of different mental disorders. When asked if she has received enough support from the University Andrea replied, Absolutely. I have spoken to several staff members since being here, from day one they made the transition of schools such an easy process and are always willing to meet and communicate with me. They have been incredible. When asked if she would recommend Swansea University to other international students, Andrea replied Most definitely! The staff at Swansea and people from Wales have made it an enjoyable experience. The program has been excellent, my professors are enthusiastic about teaching and the campus is beautiful. Who wouldnt recommend to their friends a University across the street from a beach?

Laura Patterson, Colorado, USA MA Developmental and Therapeutic Play Laura first studied at Swansea University during an exchange programme as part of her undergraduate degree (Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University). She loved the community so much, that she returned here to study for her masters in Developmental and Therapeutic Play. I enjoy being an international student at Swansea. There are a lot of international students and people are very friendly and welcoming. Theres a lot of opportunity to travel and I would say the social atmosphere is the best thing about Swansea. People are so lovely and it is easy to make friends! The staff are very helpful and the facilities are good. I enjoy the library a lot and find it very helpful for my studies and research. The highlight so far has been getting to know some of my friends here. I have made lifelong friendships!

Laura explains that the course is hands-on, which she feels will help her specialise in her field - I know much more about children and play therapy than I did from my undergrad degree. I love that my course is so small, there are only 15 other girls, because we get a lot of one-on-one time with the lecturers. I also get to know the girls on my course really well. Laura received a 3000 scholarship from the international office at Swansea University, which she says has been really helpful. When asked if she would recommend Swansea University to other international

students, Laura said Definitely! International experience is priceless, studying abroad means learning as much outside of the classroom as in the classroom. You learn about yourself and gain a confidence and adaptability for life. Plus, it is so much fun!

The highlight so far has been getting to know some of my friends here. I have made lifelong friendships!

Vanessa Chong, Hong Kong BSc Psychology Born and bred in Hong Kong, BSc Psychology undergraduate Vanessa Chong was excited from the start to have an opportunity to study at Swansea University. When I attended an open day at the University, the first thing that I noticed was that there were lots of people from different countries; it felt like an equal proportion between each place. I chose to do psychology because I was unsure of what career I wanted when I graduated. I have found the course really interesting because of the various approaches to psychology and I like the way the course has been set up for us - in the first half of the first two semesters we got an introduction to the modules, before progressing to more advanced knowledge. Ive also been able to do social and developmental psychology, which is not available in all universities. We have module-related tutorials and personal tutors to assure us, if we have any difficulties we can go to them and they are happy to answer any questions. I remember I was really stressed about my first ever essay - I talked to my personal tutor and he assured me that it was not that hard and gave me a few tips on how to start the essay. I would definitely recommend Swansea University to other international students as it provides a great atmosphere for study! All the people here are friendly and enthusiastic, and there are a wide range of activities that you can join in with when you come here. The city centre is not that far away from the university campus which is always a plus. We also have a fantastic beach across the way, which is a sight that you must see for yourself. I would hugely recommend visiting Swansea University to get a feel for what it would be like studying here.

Michelle Dawn Amoroso, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean PhD Health Sciences Before studying at Swansea I studied at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus, doing Medical Physics and Bioengineering; Im now continuing as a split-site student still registered at both the UWI and Swansea University. I chose to study at Swansea after a short research visit with my joint supervisor here; my research supervisor is based here, and I found good research facilities like the library and liked the helpful, supportive staff at the College. I thought it would be good for research, and the beautiful park and beach nearby are a bonus. I chose this course as its supervised by one of the pioneers in fetal biomagnetic cardiac scanning research, and this research was previously done at Swansea as well. Were currently setting up a biomagnetic research programme in my home country at the University of the West Indies, where we would like to develop biomagnetic scanning as a cardiac diagnostic aid in fetuses and diabetic adults, so this course should help me learn techniques and gain experience that will be directly applicable to the programme in T&T.

Overseas Nurses Programme

Who should take this module? Nurses who trained outside of the EEA,who wish to work in the UK and have overseas registration. The module details The programme provides 20 days protected learning time, including supervised practice. The study time will be divided between eleven study days in college and the remainder in practice. Students will develop knowledge and skills to equip them for safe and effective practice in the UK in order to provide high quality nursing care underpinned by a sound evidence base. Clinical learning outcomes will be achieved through practice based assessments and evidenced by the completion of clinical competency documents. Topics covered include: The structure and organisation of the National Health Service Professional aspects of the role of the nurse - including risk management, clinical governance and leadership Continuing professional development Delivery and Management of clinical care All Wales Passport for Manual Handling Introduction to child and mental health issues in nursing Students may obtain UK Registration only by taking the ONP Module SHGE03. Students may obtain UK Registration plus gain 40 credit points at level 2 by taking ONP Module SHN250.

Successful completion of SHN250 would require the student to complete the required practice competencies for UK Registration and submit a written reflective assignment at level 2. Module Duration This module runs for twenty days. Eleven days are spent in college and the remainder in supervised practice. The period of supervised practice can last from 3-6months dependent upon the conditions indicated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) following individual assessment by the NMC of prior education and practice. Cost of programme 960+VAT Candidates will also be required to pay for a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check which is (at the time of going to print) 60.36. This is a modular undergraduate honours degree programme. The aim of the course is to enable you to develop a critical understanding of policy, theory and practice in health and social care and to work across professional and organisational boundaries promoting professional and service-user relationships and interprofessional collaboration. You will be enabled to identify and assess the nature and extent of the issues involved in managing public health locally, nationally and internationally. Who should take this programme? The programme is aimed at individuals who are interested in careers in either health or social care environments, including the NHS, Social Services, independent health and social care, voluntary and charitable sectors. Students should have an interest in working with people. Useful subjects

to have studied prior to taking this degree are the humanities especially sociology or psychology. The study of human biology and the biosciences are also helpful. Prospective students should possess the ability to communicate well with a diverse range of people and demonstrate the potential to develop personal qualities useful for team working, leadership and management.

The Medical Sciences and Humanities degree explores both the scientific and human sides of medicine and healthcare. This innovative, interdisciplinary degree, developed in conjunction with the School of Medicine at Swansea University, allows you to study the broad spectrum of subjects encompassing both the science and the art of medicine. Who should take this programme? You will be interested in the natural sciences and how they apply to the human body. However, you will also be curious about how we experience health and illness, and why that might also be central to modern conceptions of medicine and healthcare. You should also be fascinated by the way that medical knowledge is made and applied, and in understanding medicine as a feature of our society and culture. As well as studying anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and other medical sciences, you will also address questions such as: how did doctors get the power to tell us how to eat, drink, and think; how did we get a National Health Service, and how does it work;what is the role of medicine in controversial areas like euthanasia and suicide prevention?

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) has agreed to recognise the qualification of Master of Osteopathy (MOst) awarded by the College of Human and Health Sciences at Swansea University, subject to approval by the Privy Council.

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) define osteopathy as a manner of detecting, treating, preventing and rehabilitating people with conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, namely muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints, in a holistic and scientifically based way. When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well tuned engine, it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living. Osteopathy is a well recognised and evidence based profession that encompasses a holistic and life-span approach to the provision of diagnostic, assessment and rehabilitation. Who should take this programme? Effective osteopathic diagnosis, assessment and treatment require a holistic, person centered approach that demands the application of higher level knowledge, understanding and clinical osteopathic skills. The aim of this Integrated Masters is to enable students to personally and professionally develop, attain competences in key osteopathic skills, incorporated business management principles in order to produce osteopaths who will be analytical, assertive, creative, safe, confident and decisive, embracing change and be consumers and users of research.

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour, of the brain and of the mind. At Level 1 students are required to take Introductory Psychology modules. These provide a general opening to the subject and a basic framework for the theoretical and experimental study of Psychology and its applications. Level 1 modules include: Cognitive Psychology Social and Developmental Psychology Biological Psychology Individual and Abnormal Psychology Statistics and Experimental Psychology Study Skills for Psychology In Level 2 students will follow up, in greater depth, topics pursued in Level 1 along with other topics. Students will take modules in Memory, Attention and Learning; Perception, Thinking and Reasoning; Social Psychology; Language and Lifespan Development; Brain and Behaviour; Individual Differences; Experimental Methods and Statistics. In Level 3 students select modules from an extensive list of optional modules. The modules cover areas such as Applied, Biological, Social, Abnormal, Health, Cognitive and Evolutionary Psychology.

A substantial research project is also undertaken. Who should take this programme? Potential students studying either Sciencebased and/or Arts and Humanities subjects are welcome to apply. It is not essential to have studied Psychology at A level; lecturers presume no prior knowledge of the subject in the first year modules. The Psychology Degree is validated by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and (providing a minimum of a 2:2 Honours Degree is achieved) confers Graduate Basis for Registration (G.B.R), giving students an ideal foundation for further training.

The aim of the programme is to equip students with an advanced understanding of issues relating to the theory and practice of various elements of clinical psychology. This programme provides an opportunity to research and learn about a wide range of topics in psychology; from basic learning and cognition, to neuropsychology, and to applied topics in clinical and educational psychology, driven by the individual students interests, and supervised by experts in the fields. Former students have gone on to use this knowledge in psychological research, in work in educational and clinical settings, and also in business, marketing, and advertising careers, where understanding how people think and behave is important. This programme provides students with high-level training in advanced research methods and skills, and offers exciting opportunities to conduct basic and applied research projects in a wide range of areas. The course equips students with advanced training in research methods covering all relevant skills, including reviewing literature, developing hypotheses, writing research proposals, designing and carrying out empirical studies, conducting advanced statistical and qualitative analyses, and presenting results. Students learn to use a range of research tools, such as databases, statistical software, and computer programmes. Teaching is conducted

through a variety of means: seminars, small group lectures, and practical classes, and is assessed primarily by written course work, and reports of empirical projects carried out both individually and in groups. By the end of this training, students will have acquired a wide range of practical research skills to apply in any context where human behaviour is important. Human and health sciences make up the largest college on campus at Swansea University, providing you with an environment in which to pursue your research passions, and to benefit from the wealth of experience of our academic staff. From the moment you begin youll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the dynamic and supportive research culture needed to start a career in research. Research can be undertaken from basic and applied, policy and professional practice oriented including laboratorybased experiments, social research, and action research which blurs the boundaries between education, practice and research. Many of our academic staff are active researchers, and with 13 research centres and groups spanning health science, psychology, ageing and social science research areas.

Our research students Our research students are highly valued by the University for the contribution they make to the academic community. Guiding the direction of all research activity at an academic level, all research groups and centres fully integrate our postgraduate research students to ensure they have the support and skills development needed for their studies. Current research degrees available include: MPhil and PhD These programmes are ideal for those hoping to pursue research-focused or academic careers or for development and recognition of their skills in their chosen professional career. Students on this programme will undertake supervised research and study, which will be supported throughout by at least two academic supervisors. These programmes may be offered on a fulltime or part-time basis.
