The course will examine the research process, problem definition, formulation/ development of theoretical framework, identification of information needs, setting up a research proposal, data collection and analysis and the reporting of research results. The pre-requisites for this course Statistics II; thus, it is assumed that students have knowledge of basic statistics. 3. Instructional Objectives On successful completion of this unit you should be able to: 1. understand the scientific research process. 2. locate problem areas in the firm and conduct research to help solve these problems. 3. apply the concepts and models of research to help develop a research proposal for your thesis. 4. write and present research reports; and 5. discriminate "good" from "bad" research reported in academic, business, and trade contexts.

7. Assessment Compliance Information There will be 810 small quizzes, and 4 big quizzes. The weighing are on your student guide. Contribution of your own thoughts and participation in class activities is rewarded in this unit. Lecturers will allocate participation marks to students based upon their contribution to the class. Note that these marks are given for taking a risk and contributing to the class so that everyone can learn. It is not necessary to be perfectly correct as any contribution will lead to discussion, but it is necessary to speak up as the marks are not allocated for sitting quietly in class. The lecturers will give you many opportunities to participate in group discussions, case studies and class exercises by asking questions, answering questions, or taking an active role in activities will also gain you participation marks. Assessment Summary The assessment for this unit consists of the following items. No. Assessment Activity 8-10 Minor Quizzes Due date Ongoing Percentage % 10% 45% if Exam score < (Major Quizzes + Assignments) score 25% Week 14-15 if Exam score > (Major Quizzes + Assignments score) 45% if Exam score < (Major Quizzes + Assignments) score 65% if Exam score > (Major Quizzes + Assignments score)

Major Quiz I Class presentation This presentation should be carefully timed to last no more than 10 minutes. The presentation will be held in class on 26th / 27th September, 2011. You are required to hand-in a brief summary of the proposed research. The intention of this exercise is to give students the opportunity to share their research idea before they embark on it, in order to get feedback from the Lecturer and peers. The presentation is a summary of: 1. Introduction/Background (1-3 pages): This should cover: Background information to the business problem; a description of the business problem; an explanation/description of the research problem, list specific objectives of the proposed research study; briefly give/provide/discuss a justification (need) for the proposed research study. Literature Review (3-15 pages): This should cover a comprehensive review of literature on aspects surrounding the research topic (research problem/business problem) in a logical and sequential manner, discuss the findings/results of previous research studies in this area topic, the consistency of findings/results among the previous studies the inconsistencies/differences in the findings/results in previous studies, the reasons for the inconsistencies/ consistencies in the findings of findings/result, your observations on critical review of the findings and the current industry practices (with appropriate illustrations/examples). These should form the basis for justification for your proposed study. Please note that a Literature Review is not a separate summary of each of the articles that you have collected. Instead, it is a synthesis of all the published research work in the area.

2.

Major Quiz II & III In-Class Assesment Students will be required to answer a set of questions to demonstrate their understanding of the theoretical concepts and the application of these concepts to practical business situations. Details will be discussed closer to the date. Major Quiz IV and FINAL EXAM Research Proposal (Group Project) Each group will have a specific topic for the research proposal. Students must complete the research proposal during this course, the format of which is given in the Faculty Guidelines. Within the assigned topic, students should identify a researchable idea, conduct comprehensive literature review (the review should critically evaluate the general area of the proposed research), formulate propositions/hypotheses, put together a research plan, and outline anticipated results and implications. The intention of this exercise is to give students the opportunity to think about doing publishable research, and to gain some hands-on experience in this area, as well as prepare them to undertake the business thesis unit later in the degree program. Students are required to share their ideas by presenting their research proposals to the class for Major Quiz IV, which will be due in week 14-15. Following the presentation, students are required to submit their revised version of research proposal for Final Examination.

NOTE: YOU are responsible for making YOUR group work. This is a true reflection of a workplace environment where people MUST work together. Please ensure to keep a RECORD of meetings, attendance at meetings, medical certificates and dates when documents were submitted by each group member as evidence of contribution, to support peer appeals against group members. A mark of ZERO (0) will be awarded to any student who does not participate and does not have a medical certificate. 8.
