T

he debates have begun,

the TV commercials are
in our faces, the media
is in its glory increasing ad rev-
enue after a lackluster year, the
nation is polarized and the peo-
ple are tuned-in, eager to see
what happens!
What does this all mean to
you, a resident of North Jersey,
looking to grow and maintain
your net-worth and portfolio; to
preserve your standard of living
while increasing the quality of
life for yourself, your spouse and
your children? Can the elec-
tion of the President really
influence any of these factors?
Does he or will he affect the
tone of the Nation and the peo-
ple who live here? Does the
winner have the influence to
really effect change? Can the
President motivate and manipu-
late Congress to make effective
improvements that will have
both a short term and long-term
positive effect on your finances
and bottom line? Does it really
make a difference who the vic-
tor is?
The answer to these ques-
tions in this authors opinion is
a resounding YES. All we need
to do is look back at the
Presidencies of Republican
Ronald Reagan and Democrat
Bill Clinton who left an indeli-
ble impression. The country
prospered under their leader-
ship and these facts are undeni-
able. These two leaders had a
divergently different approach
to governing and leading, yet,
both were successful in their
own right. In both cases, their
actions affected the people
long after their terms expired,
in some cases to this very day.
As an individual and a voter,
whether you voted for these
men or not there are some ques-
tions you should ask yourself.
Were you proud of the job they
performed and the legacy they
left behind? Were you proud to
be an American while they held
the highest office in the land?
Did you personally prosper as a
result of their actions and
choices? Did the job market at
the time benefit your career?
Did your portfolio grow, was
money more plentiful then, and
was the general attitude and
sentiment of the public, better,
under their leadership? Were
you a happier person during the
Reagan and Clinton years?
How did these leaders, in
your opinion handle foreign
affairs? What was the worlds
opinion of America and
Americans at the time as com-
pared to the last few years? Was
our country a safer place to live
and raise a family then, when
weighed against today? What
happened over the last 12 years
to change or diminish America
as we once knew her? In your
opinion, are prospects for the
future less or more opportunis-
tic now, as opposed to then?

Estate Planning Specialist, it

he 2010 Healthcare
Act included several
significant tax
changes scheduled to take
effect next year. Listed below
is information on two provi-
sions that could impact
numerous taxpayers, and
what you can do before year-
end to minimize the negative
impact of these provisions.
Cap on healthcare flexible
spending account (FSA)
contributions
Before the Healthcare
Act, there was no tax-law
limit on the amount you
could contribute each year to
your employer's healthcare
FSA plan. That said, many
plans have always imposed
their own annual limits.
Amounts you contribute to
the FSA plan are subtracted
from your taxable salary.
Then, you can use the FSA
funds to reimburse yourself
tax-free to cover qualified
medical expenses. Good
deal! Starting in 2013, how-
ever, the maximum annual
FSA contribution for each
employee will be capped at
$2,500. An employee
employed by two or more
unrelated employers may
elect up to $2,500 under
each employer's health FSA.
Tax planning implica-
tions: If you have an FSA
plan, your employer will ask
you near the end of the year
to decide how much you
want to contribute to your
healthcare FSA for 2013. At
that point, the new $2,500
contribution limit may affect
you. Other than that, just
make sure you use up your
2012 contribution before the
deadline for doing so.
Higher threshold for item-
ized medical expense deduc-
tions
Before the Healthcare
Act, the allowable itemized
deduction for unreimbursed
medical expenses paid for

ooth sensitivity can be
caused by a problem
with the tooths nerve
and blood supply (pulp), or by
exposure of dentin, resulting in
dentin hypersensitivity.
Dentin is a sponge-like,
hard layer underneath enamel
(the outer white, hardest
layer of a tooth) that contains
small channels that connect
the pulp to the outside of the
dentin. When dentin is
exposed, there can be hyper-
sensitivity.
Dentin hypersensitivity is
a short, sharp pain not caused
by tooth decay. It can affect up
to one in every two people at
sometime in their lives. This
condition is estimated to affect
40 million people in the U.S.
Hypersensitivity mostly
affects people in their 20s and
30s. Age changes dentin and
decreases tooth sensitivity. Age
increases gum recession (expos-
ing dentin), enamel erosion,
and tooth structure loss.
Enamels hard texture pro-
tects the pulp and dentin.
When it is lost, hypersensitivi-
ty occurs. The most common
complaints are caused by cold
and sweets.The pain from
enamel loss is caused by:
1.Acidic foods and drinks
(sodas,sports drinks,fruits,etc.)
2.Vigorous over-brushing, re-
moving the enamel
3.Abrasive toothpastes
4.Using a medium or hard
toothbrush (not American
Dental Association approved)
5.Gum recession
6.Use or overuse of tooth
whitening products
7.Clenching or grinding your
teeth (bruxism)
Part 2 discusses the actual
reason hypersensivity hurts,
damaged to the pulp (nerve),
and available treatments.

ressing up and
engaging in role play
is an important com-
ponent of childhood learning
and having fun. Although
costumes are regularly used
in day care centers, schools
and at home, they become
the center of attention when
Halloween arrives.
The practice of wearing
costumes dates back at least
2,000 years to ancient
Europeans and Celts. These
cultures celebrated a holiday
called Samhain, which repre-
sented their new year.
Samhain fell on November 1
and marked the first day of
winter after the summer har-
vest. These ancient people
associated the winter with
coldness, darkness and death
and believed the day before
Samhain October 31
established a distorted
boundary between the living
and the dead. Therefore,
individuals wore costumes
and masks to avoid being rec-
ognized by the ghosts that
came out on the night of
Samhain. They would also
place bowls of food outside of
their homes to satisfy the
ghosts and keep them from
entering the home.
Although Halloween
has transformed more into a
commercial holiday than one
associated with death and
the afterworld in the literal
sense, many adults and chil-
dren continue to participate
in the rituals that were set
forth many years ago, most
notably wearing costumes.
Parents may want to ensure
that the costumes their chil-
dren wear are safe to help
make Halloween a day with-
out injury.
Create a cape that doesnt
choke. A long cape can be
stepped on and then tug at a
childs neck. Instead, make a
cape that has arm loops to
keep it in place instead of a
tie around the neck. This
way there never will be a
choking hazard.
Check makeup labeling.
There are many safe
Halloween cosmetics on the
market, but some should not
be used around the eyes or
mouth because allergic reac-
tions could occur. Double-
check all ingredients lists
and package warnings before
using makeup on children,
who tend to have more sensi-
tive skin than adults. Also, it
is a good idea to do a test
patch of the product. Put a
small dab of the makeup in
the crook of the inside of the
childs elbow. Wait 24 hours
and see if any itching or
a rash forms. This could
indicate an allergy to the
product.
Keep eyes open. Masks are
popular components of
Halloween costumes, but
some designs can obstruct
vision or even impair breath-
ing. Masks always should be

you, your spouse and your
dependents equaled the
excess of your qualified med-
ical expenses over 7.5 per-
cent of your adjusted gross
income (AGI). Starting in
2013, the deduction thresh-
old will be raised to 10 per-
cent of AGI for most individ-
uals. However, if either you
or your spouse reach age 65
by Dec. 31, 2013, the new 10
percent threshold will not
take effect until 2017. (In
other words, the long-stand-
ing 7.5 percent threshold will
continue to apply to those
taxpayers for 20132016.)
Also, if you or your spouse
turn 65 between 20142016,
the long-standing 7.5 percent
threshold will apply for that
year through 2016. Starting
in 2017, the 10 percent
threshold will apply to every-
one.
Tax planning implica-
tions: If you will be affected
by the new 10 percent
threshold next year, consider
accelerating elective qualify-
ing unreimbursed medical
expenses into 2012 so that
your allowable medical
expense deduction for this
year will be based on the
more taxpayer-friendly 7.5
percent threshold.
College loan repayment plan
application is simplified
Federal college loan bor-
rowers have several repay-
ment plan options. One
option income-based
repayment (IBR) is about
to get simpler. Under IBR,
required monthly payments
are capped based on income
and family size. Previously,
applicants had to enter their
income tax data onto the
application. Now, the
Department of Education is
collaborating with the IRS so
applicants can import their
tax return data directly into
the IBR application and sub-
mit it online. This will allow
borrowers to complete the
application in one sitting.

The Pompton Lakes
Republican Club invites you
to its monthly meetings on
the third Thursday of each
month at the VFW Post 2906
off Wanaque Avenue in
W
hat are you doing
on Tuesday, Nov-
ember 6? Are you
one of the millions of
Americans who will choose
not to vote? If so, how come?
If the answer is because youre
too busy, youre definitely not
alone. The California Voter
Foundation found that 28 per-
cent of infrequent voters (and
23 percent of unregistered
voters) said they were just too
busy to vote. Yet a whopping
91 percent of infrequent vot-
ers said that voting is an
important part of being a good
citizen!
So whether you are too
busy with work or simply dont
want to waste time waiting in
line at the polls, there is a sim-
ple solution fill out an
absentee ballot!
Anyone registered to
vote can now do so by absen-
tee ballot. You do not need to
provide a reason! This way you
can cast your vote easily from
wherever you are and on
your own time. To get your
ballot, go to this website:
www.state.nj.us/state/elec-
tions/voting-information-
vote-by-mail.html. Your ballot
must be received by the coun-
ty clerk seven days prior to the
election.
In addition to being too
busy to vote, there are other
excuses people provide every
year. However, the answers to
these excuses may not be quite
as simple as obtaining an
absentee ballot.
Many voters believe their
vote doesnt truly matter.
Although the way the
Electoral College system works
might make an individual vote
seem insignificant, its not.
Each state is deciding which
candidate its electoral votes
will go toward. If your vote did
not count, there wouldnt
even need to be an election to
begin with. You have a voice
and you have the right to be
heard.
Even those who know
their vote counts might be dis-
appointed with both candi-
dates. That doesnt mean you
shouldnt vote; take the lesser-
of-two-evils approach. Whom
would you definitely NOT
want to have in office? Maybe
youre dissatisfied with
President Obamas past term
in office. If thats the case, vote
for Romney! Do you know for
sure that you dont want
Romney in office? Then secure
President Obamas position for
a second term! The winner of
the 2012 Presidential Election
is going to be leading our
country for the next four years.
Even if you absolutely hate the
candidates, you should choose
the one whom youd rather
have lead the country.
Then again, maybe you
just dont care. Americans
have a bad reputation for
being apathetic and voting is
one of those areas where this
apathetic attitude really stands
out. Many are disinterested in
politics and would much
rather hear none of it.
However, people who claim
not to care about what goes on
in our government are often
the first ones to complain
when things dont go their
way. If youre upset with the
state of the country, but take
no interest in it and refuse to
participate in elections, you
really have no right to com-
plain. Dont stay home and be
disinterested whatever the
results of Tuesday, November 6
hold, they will have an impact
on your life for at least the
next four years.
Voting is one of the many
rights that had to be fought for
so we could enjoy the freedom
of choosing our future leaders.
At the birth of our country,
only white men who owned
their own property were
allowed to vote; minorities and
women, although citizens, were
denied participation in elec-
tions. It took years of protesting
to extend this right to all U.S.
citizens. If we refuse to exercise
our rights, we put ourselves in
danger of forfeiting them. So
on Election Day, go out and be
heard. (Or stay in and mail
your absentee ballot!)
If you are not yet regis-
tered, its simple and takes
about five minutes. Go to
www.registertovote.org.

Make it visible. Trick-or-

tricky. Darkness can make it
hard for drivers and other
pedestrians to see costume-
clad children. If going door-
to-door will be happening at
night, consider giving chil-
dren glow sticks or flashlights
to carry. There also are
reflective tapes that can be
attached to costumes that
make them light up when
lights shine on the
tape.

the use of fake teeth (such as

meant to be bitten, so they
wont be swallowed.
Halloween is meant to
be a time of fun and adven-
ture. Ensuring costumes are
safe for children can help
make the day even more
enjoyable for all involved.

H
alloween is a fun-
filled holiday for
children, as well as
adults. However, for your pet,
Halloween can be a stressful,
frightening and even danger-
ous holiday. Your pet depends
on you to protect it, so please
take a few extra precautions to
help keep your pet safe during
this Halloween season.
Your companion animals
may look very cute in a cos-
tume, but make sure that it is
not annoying or unsafe for
them. It should not obstruct
your pets vision, or constrict
movement, hearing, or its
ability to breathe or bark.
Also, check for small, dan-
gling or easily chewed-off
pieces on the costume that
your pets could choke on, or
that may cause harm to them,
such as elastic, rubber bands
or buttons. When buying a
Halloween costume for your
pets, its very important to
select the appropriate size.
Do not leave your pets
outside on Halloween.
Instead, keep your pets safely
inside, away from trick-or-
treaters and other Halloween
activities. Your pets will be
less frightened and will not
feel threatened by noisy, cos-
tumed children. Plus, these
ghouls and goblins can scare
pets, causing them to escape
from the yard. It is a good idea
to keep your outdoor cat
inside several days before and
after Halloween. Black cats in
particular may be at risk from
children's pranks.
Its best not to bring the
family dog along trick-or-
treating. Although it is nice
for them to get out and trick-
or-treat with the family, dogs
may become difficult to han-
dle during the noise and con-
fusion of the festivities. Some
children you meet may be
afraid of dogs, especially in the
dark. Also, take your dog on
its walk before the Halloween
festivities begin. This will
help keep your dog safe and
calm.
Even the most social
dogs and cats should be kept
in a separate room, away from
the front door, during trick-or-
treat visiting hours. Too many
strangers can be overwhelm-
ing for a dog or cat, and some
children may be afraid of ani-
mals. Also, you open the door
many times during the
evening for trick-or-treaters,
so be very careful your dog or
cat does not dart outside.
Make sure your cat or
dog wears a current animal
license tag or ID tag on its col-
lar or is micro-chipped. If, for
any reason, a pet does escape
or become lost, you increase
the chances that your pet will
be returned to you if he is
wearing a collar with an ID
tag.
Dont share any
candy with pets, espe-
cially chocolate. Tell
your children not to
share their candy
with the family pet
and make sure that
candy is put out of
reach after children
return from their trick-or-
treating adventures. Candy
can be harmful and chocolate
is toxic for animals, causing
vomiting, restlessness, heart
disturbances and even death.
If you suspect your pet has
eaten chocolate or other
candy that causes discomfort,
consult your veterinarian
immediately. Throw your
candy wrappers away, too.
Wrappers and lollipop sticks
can be dangerous if your pet
swallows them.
Keep your pet away from
potentially hazardous decora-
tions. Flames from jack-o-
lanterns and candles could
singe or burn your pet. Keep
small Halloween decorations
away from your pet, since they
could cause choking.
Use these tips to have a
festive and safe Halloween. For
more information and tips
about holiday safety for pets,
call or visit your family veteri-
narian. Remember, your veteri-
narian is your very best source
for advice on keeping your pet
safe, healthy and happy!

P
icasso once said, Art
washes from the soul
the dust of everyday
life. Art therapy is based on
the idea that art can be heal-
ing and taps wordlessly into
the very core of our inner
lives. It is an established
mental health profession that
uses the creative process of
art-making to improve and
enhance the physical, mental
and emotional well-being of
individuals of all ages. In art
therapy, people are encour-
aged to express what they
cannot say in words through
a variety of art forms, includ-
ing painting, collage, draw-
ing and sculpture.
The Riverdale Art
Center (RAC) and Healing
Arts Family Connection, two
non-profits dedicated to
bringing the healing aspects
of art to all, have combined
efforts to offer a unique
workshop: Family Open
Studio for Children with
Autism. Children and their
families will have the oppor-
tunity to create art together
and be able to connect with
other families. Art projects
will be varied and adapted to
all abilities, and no prior
artistic training or ability is
required to attend. The
workshop will encourage self-
expression and provide the
opportunity to share artwork
with the group. Most impor-
tantly, there will be opportu-
nities for children to work on
building their social skills.
Children with autism
have many challenges to
overcome, especially those
that involve communication
and socialization. It can be
hard for parents to find
appropriate activities for
their autistic children to
experience joy and self-
esteem because of behavioral
challenges. However, chil-
dren with autism can be
extremely creative if directed
and guided in a nurturing
way that encourages them to
relate and respond. For indi-
viduals with autism, Art
therapy can be beneficial due
to their intense sensory
needs; they generally benefit
from more visual, auditory,
kinesthetic, concrete and
hands-on therapies. A
trained art therapist will be
able to understand children
with autism through art
media and the creative
process, and help them with
their behavioral issues.
Pamela Ullmann, a
licensed and trained art ther-
apist with 15 years of experi-
ence, joins the RAC as the
Director of Art Therapy. She
currently serves as the presi-
dent-elect of the New Jersey
Art Therapy Association and
has worked with children
and families in a variety of
community and healthcare
settings. Pamela will be lead-
ing this workshop and devel-
oping more unique programs
for the RAC in the coming
year. To find out more about
Pamela and art therapy, visit
her website at www.colorsof-
play.com.
The workshop is sched-
uled on Wednesdays from
4:155:30pm at the RAC,
starting Nov. 7 and running
through Dec. 12. The RAC
is located at 5 Mathews Ave.
in Riverdale. For more infor-
mation on this event or to
register, please call the RAC
at 973-513-9250 or go online
to www.riverdaleartcenter
.org. The workshop fee is $20
per session for an entire
family and includes all art
materials.

Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower. Albert Camus
R
aking leaves is an
annual event for peo-
ple in many parts of
the country. Some people
enjoy getting out in the crisp,
autumn air and spending a
day cleaning up the yard.
Others do not relish the idea
of hours upon hours of leaf
removal from their lawns.
Making the process easier
and more enjoyable benefits
all involved.
The majority of home-
owners realize that in order
to keep their lawn pristine,
leaves and debris must be
routinely removed from the
yard. Raking leaves is an
activity that takes time and
energy. It also can be strenu-
ous work. However, by
employing a few techniques,
the work doesn't have to be
that difficult and it might
even be fun.
Invest in a quality rake,
particularly one that bends a
bit with each stroke. This
will help maximize the num-
ber of leaves that will be col-
lected with each pass.
If raking routinely causes
aches and pains in your arms,
shoulders and wrists, look for
ergonomic rakes that are the
proper height for your body.
Move your legs when you
are raking instead of remain-
ing stationary and just using
your arms. This will help
reduce your risk of back pain.
Use smaller passes of the
rake to collect leaves. This
method is more efficient and
less taxing on your muscles.
* Turn on music while you
are raking. Sing along to the
tunes or move with the beat,
and it just may take your
mind off of the task at hand.
Be sure to rake downwind;
otherwise every pile of leaves
you collect may end up blow-
ing around and giving you
more work.
Rake leaves in groups.
Enlist the help of all family
members so that it will take
much less time. Plus, every-
one gets to spend time work-
ing together. Talking and
joking around will certainly
pass the time more quickly.
Use a leaf blower sparingly.
It may seem advantageous to
simply blow the leaves to the
curb, but this can take more
time and leaf blowers are
much noisier. Use the blower
to dislodge leaves from hard-
to-reach areas, like behind
bushes or under decks. Then
rake the leaves into manage-
able piles.
Wait until after the peak
time for leaves to be falling
before you do the majority of
raking. Otherwise, you could
spend just about every
Saturday and Sunday clean-

ing up leaves.
Create family-centered
games while raking. Have
contests to see who can rake
the largest pile in the short-
est amount of time. Take
breaks so that everyone can
enjoy jumping in a giant leaf
pile or horsing around.
Host a leaf-raking party
with friends and family mem-
bers. Tie it into a day when
there is a football game on
television, or toss around the
old pigskin after the job is
done.
Use two garbage pail lids to
pick up leaves and put them
into disposal bags. You'll grab
more leaves in each pass.
There are some leaf blowers
that can vacuum up leaves
and mulch them at the same
time. Put a portion of this
leaf mulch into a compost
pile or in your garden beds.
If your town collects leaves
curbside, be sure to keep
them in a neat pile to reduce
the likelihood of leaves mak-
ing their way into a nearby
sewer.
Leaf cleanup is a neces-
sary task, but the task doesn't
have to be tedious and time-
consuming.

ight from Broadway
to the Rhino stage!
Dont miss this
grand scale musical per-
formed at the Rhino Theatre
weekends November 2
through 25, 2012. Just
recently, this show had its
second Broadway revival and
starred Daniel Radcliffe in
the lead role. The Rhino
Theatres J. Pierrepont Finch
will be portrayed by Anthony
Crouchelli of New Milford,
who boasts impressive
regional and professional
credits!
How to Succeed is the
story about the triumph of
the common man. The hero
is a window washer named J.
Pierrepont Finch. After
Finch happens upon a book
entitled How to Succeed in
Business Without Really
Trying, he decides to begin
his rise up the corporate lad-
der. Following the instruc-
tions of the book, Finch
lands a job in the mailroom
at the World Wide Wicket
Company. With the help of
his handy book, Finch quick-
ly gains promotions and out-
smarts his rival, Frump who
also happens to be the boss
nephew. Finch then gains the
love of Rosemary, a secretary
at the company. In the end,
however, after Finchs ad
campaign goes awry, the
book can no longer help him.
He is forced to rely on his
own wits and performs so
admirably that he is promot-
ed to chairman of the board.
Show dates are the first
four weekends in November.
Friday and Saturday shows
are at 8pm and Sunday shows
are at 2pm Ticket prices are
$25 for adults, $22 for seniors

Then the cake balls are put

Candied fruit: Caramel-cov-

Chocolate bark: Create a

P
eanut butter is not only
a staple of childrens
lunches, but it also is a
healthy food. While commer-
cially made peanut butter is
popular, foodies can also
make their own homemade
peanut butter.
Rich in fiber and pro-
tein, peanut butter makes a
healthy addition to any diet.
Fiber helps maintain a
healthy colon and reduce bad
cholesterol in the blood and
also may help to regulate
blood glucose levels, while
possibly reducing an individ-
uals risk of developing col-
orectal cancer. Individuals
looking to eat high protein
foods can choose peanut but-
ter as a good protein source
that can help the body feel
full longer.
Peanut butter sometimes
gets a bad rap because of the
amount of fat per tablespoon
of the food. While a serving
of peanut butter is roughly
188 calories and may have 16
grams of fat, the fat is mono-
saturated, meaning it is heart-
healthy. When enjoyed in
moderation, peanut butter is
healthy.
There are several advan-
tages to making your own
peanut butter. One of the
main reasons is you have
complete control over the
ingredients. Unlike store-
bought varieties, your peanut
butter will not contain extra
additives, such as preserva-
tives, sugar, salt and oils -- all
of which can make commer-
cial peanut butters less
healthy. Taste is another fac-
tor in homemade peanut but-
ter. Many people find the
taste is more authentic in
homemade peanut butter.
Plus the saltiness, sweetness
or roasted flavor can be cus-
tomized based on preference.
Heres how to make
homemade peanut butter.
(Note: This recipe yields
roughly 1 quart.)
1.Purchase 1 bag of unshelled
peanuts or 1 can (1 pound) of
shelled, raw or roasted
peanuts.
2.Set aside about a table-
spoon of vegetable or peanut
oil.
3.Shell the peanuts, if neces-
sary, and put them into a food
processor.
4.Pulse the food processor to
start chopping the peanuts.
Scrape down the bowl to
ensure that all of the peanuts
get finely chopped.
5.Add the vegetable oil to
help make a smooth butter
and continue to blend until
smooth.
6.Taste the peanut butter and
mix in salt or a small amount
of sweetener depending on
personal preference. Honey
makes a good sweet alterna-
tive to sugar.
7.Peanut butter can remain
fresh in a sealed container for
roughly one month. It also
can be frozen.
Making homemade pea-
nut butter ensures you have
control over the ingredients,
potentially creating a healthi-
er alternative than store-
bought varieties. It is an
activity that families can do
together and youre guaran-
teed a great-tasting peanut
butter customized to your
palate.
