Women Potential Can Be the Economic Growth Driver Sri Lanka has distinction of having the worlds first

female prime minister. Sirim avo Bandaranaike served three terms in the parliament as prime minister. Her fir st term for 5 years started on 21st July 1960. That great achievement assumed a greater significance for the fact that never before any woman had reached such a high office. India can boast to be second in this race when Smt. Indira Gandhi made it to the highest executive post of the country in the year 1966. Without gloating about this issue of woman premiership, it would be pertinent to say that the western world which projected itself as pioneers of womens rights h ad to wait longer to find a woman head for one of their countries. Savka Dab?evi ? Ku?ar became the first woman prime minister of Socialist Republic of Croatia i n 1967. Israel, a Middle East country, considered protg of the US, got in the year 1969 its prime minister in Golda Meir who was popularly known as Israels Iron lad y, an epithet used for Margaret Thatcher who became British prime minister in the year 1979. With this preview of woman prime ministers, the idea is to establish that Asia P acific countries have traditionally favoured woman in politics and the seat of p ower. It is, however, a stark reality that though India got its first woman prim e minister within two decades of independence, but the discrimination against wo man in terms of wages, education, and social status still remains a question des pite many reforms introduced over the years and improvements that resultantly to ok place. By and large women are getting good education and bright career opportunities in India. This is even more visible for the other countries of the Asia Pacific re gion. Woman now go for all sorts of vocations including those which were once co nsidered as prerogative of men. Sever al Banks as prominent as ICICI Bank and HSBC Bank have woman CEOs for many years . Many big corporate ventures are being run by women bosses. For example, Apollo Hospitals, Biocon, Kinetic Motors, and Times Group, all have a woman on the top . These are encouraging signs. Women are realizing their goals. They have largel y proved that they are more successful when given a level field. But there is mo re scope for their growth. It doesnt require anybodys sympathy. It requires a fair mindset and a policy vision at the government level. Women constitute half of the human power, and it can be a growth accelerator if nurtured sagaciously by introducing right plans and policies. By reaching top sp ots in every field, women have succeeded to break the archaic mould build around them. Now, the need is to utilize their potential in making the growth story of the region. Indopac summit which focuses on many issues which are important to economic grow th of India and the other Asia Pacific countries, would prove a major platform f or delving into these subjects.
