Paramahansa Madhavadasji was a major advocate for the revival of yogic practices, which had almost died out in much of India at that time. He encouraged Swamiji to scientifically investigate the effects and

benefits of Yoga practices, for the propagation of health, and spiritual inspiration of all humanity. In response to his Teachers request, Swami Kuvalayananda went on to establish the Kaivalyadhama Institute. Established in 1924 it was the first Yoga Institute of its kind in India, and continues to be a premier center for the medical and scientific study of Hatha Yoga, as well as a resource of ancient texts, teachings, training and yoga therapy. Swamiji had a clear vision about how Yoga could play a greater role in health and healing. In an information booklet published by the Mumbai branch of the Kaivalyadhama, he is quoted to say, I am far more anxious to prevent diseases than to cure them. He was convinced that Yogic exercises were capable of building such strong vitality in every individual who sincerely and regularly practiced, so much so that one would rarely become ill, if at all. He notes, To practice Yoga daily and systematically is to develop immunity against all diseases." (Kaivalyadhama Institute, Mumbai Branch) Although he maintained that Yoga was first and foremost a science of Spiritual development, he believed it could also be used as a science for health and healing. He believed that Yoga could greatly help in the spiritual and material resurgence of the human society, and this became his life's mission.
