Drug Addiction and Its Remedies (

In recent years

Drug Addiction has significantly increased in Bangladesh. This agent of human devastation has spread its tentacles worldwide and also in our country. Every intelligent and humane person in the world society and international organisations such as the UN and WHO are alarmed by the present rate of addiction. In our country the regular seizures of stocks of heroin and other hard drugs by the police and narcotics department gives us an indication of the extent of addiction in our country. Nowadays nearly ten per cent of outpatients in our hospitals are cases of drug addiction involving heroin, ganja and phensidyl. These are generally youths and young men between 15-30 years of age and come from all strata of the society. But there are adolescents below 15 years of age and men and women over 30. Hospital surveys show that average age of drug addicts is 22. The addicts are students, professionals, businessmen, laborers, rickshawallahs and from other professions. Students are most affected and drugs have caused deterioration in standards of education and students have also given up going to schools and colleges. These addicts are turning to various criminal activities, in order to procure drugs.

There are thousands of addicted people in Bangladesh and most of them are young, between the ages of 18 and 30 from all walks of life. Drug addiction in young Bangladeshis are mainly seen because of reasons like depression. [3]

A recent Department of Narcotics study estimated the number of drug addicts in the Muslim-majority country at two million and rising. Local non-governmental organisations, however, say anecdotal evidence suggests the figure is much higher in a country where 60 percent of the 140 million population are under the age of 30. Psychiatrist Golam Rabbani began treating a very small number of drug addicts in the early 1980s.

Although there is no precise figure of the drug dependant people, but is estimated around 4.0 million people mostly youths are dependant to some from of drugs, and increased trend among all kinds of people is alarming.[15]
About half of Bangladeshi men and one-fifth of women use tobacco in either smoking or smokeless (more information: http://www.who.int/ncd/surveillance/surveillance_publications.htm) form. Although there is no comprehensive tobacco control policy or legislation, a few measures currently are being enforced in the country: warning labels on cigarette/biri packets, banning of advertising in electronic media and specific locations, prohibitions of smoking in public places and transports. The situation has been improving because of these measures. The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has targeted tobacco as a modifiable risk factor for non-communicable diseases prevention in its conceptual framework for "Health Nutrition and Population Sector Programme" 2003 - 2006. Some organisations of GOB have been educating people about the harmful effects of tobacco, and some NGOs are organising antitobacco campaigns. On the other hand, tobacco companies are promoting their products by hoisting attractive billboards, and publishing advertisements in newspapers and magazines. A few private satellite TV channels still telecast advertisements on tobacco. [16]

Higher tobacco tax sought 'to cut consumption'

[17] According to Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), 43.3 percent population of Bangladesh consumed tobacco products in 2009; of them, 23 percent smoked cigarette or bidi. Every year 57,000 people die from tobacco consumption and nearly 382,000 become disabled. At present, the average tax on cigarette and 'bidi' are 64 and 56 percent respectively. Total consumption of tobacco product during 2008-09 was between Tk. 9,000 and Tk. 10,000 crore, according to the research. Bangladesh earned a total of Tk.5,393 crore from tax on tobacco product in the last financial year. [18]

Cigarette production and consumption patterns in Bangladesh were examined and the health, nutritional, and economic consequences of these patterns was assessed. Consumption of cigarettes and biri, handmade tobacco rolls, is increasing. Annual per capita consumption of cigarettes, taking into account all males and females over the age of 15, is 350 cigarettes. Previously conducted surveys of 2 villages indicated that 67% of the males and 1% of the females, over the age of 15, smoked 1 or more cigarettes or biri each day. Smoking is more prevalent among younger aged adults than among older aged adults. Cigarette smoking is promoted as a status symbol and is widely advertised. Most of the cigarettes and biri sold in Bangladesh are locally produced. Each month approximately 1500 million cigarettes and 3000 million biri are produced. 57% of all commercially produced cigarettes are manufactured by 1 company, which is affilated with the British American Tobacco interest group. Biri are generally produced in cottage industries. Cigarette production is expected to increase by 40% between 1980-1985. The cigarette industry is not labor intensive and it

provides only a small number of jobs for the population. 123,000 acres of land are currently devoted to the production of tobacco. This constitutes a serious loss of land which might otherwise be used to raise needed rice. It is estimated that the annual rice production loss attributable to the use of land to raise tobacco is equal to 1/2 of the country's yearly food grain deficit. Food must be imported to make up this deficit, but the poor of Bangladesh cannot afford the cost of imported food. As a result cigarette production has a negative impact on the nutritional status of the poor. Furthermore, among the poor, who must spend the vast majority of their income on food, the purchase of cigarettes reduces the amount of money available for purchasing food. Despite the low life expectancy extant in Bangladesh, lung cancer is already the 3rd most common form of cancer among the male population. The rate of chronic and acute respiratory disease is high and smoking probably aggravates these conditions. Policies, aimed at altering the trend toward increased cigarette consumption, are clearly needed.[19]

Differences by Sex in Tobacco Use Bangladesh, Thailand, and Uruguay

The majority of the worlds 1.3 billion tobacco users are men, but female use is increasing. To examine differences in tobacco use and awareness of tobacco marketing by sex, CDC and health officials in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Uruguay (among the first countries to report results) analyzed 2009 data from a newly instituted survey, the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which indicated wide variation among the three countries in tobacco use, product types used, and marketing awareness among males and females. In Bangladesh and Thailand, use of smoked tobacco products was far greater among males (44.7% and 45.6%, respectively) than females (1.5% and 3.1%, respectively). In Uruguay, the difference was smaller (30.7% versus 19.8%). Use of smokeless tobacco products in Bangladesh was approximately the same among males (26.4%) and females (27.9%), but females were significantly more likely to use smokeless tobacco in Thailand (6.3% versus 1.3%), and use in Uruguay by either sex was nearly nonexistent. Males in Bangladesh were twice as likely as females to notice cigarette advertising (68.0% versus 29.3%), but the difference between males and females was smaller in Thailand (17.4% versus 14.5%) and Uruguay (49.0% versus 40.0%). In all three countries, awareness of tobacco marketing was more prevalent among females aged 1524 years than older women. Comprehensive bans on advertising, sponsorship, and promotion of tobacco products, recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), can reduce per capita cigarette consumption if enforced. GATS* is a new nationally representative household survey of persons aged 15 years, initially conducted during 20082009 in 14 countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russian Federation, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and Vietnam. Bangladesh, Thailand, and Uruguay were among the first countries to report results. The GATS core questionnaire includes detailed questions regarding the demographic characteristics of respondents, their tobacco use, and a wide range of tobacco-related topics (e.g., cessation, secondhand smoke, economics, media, and

19

Smoking, health, and survival: prospects in Bangladesh.

knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions). In each country, a multistage cluster sample design is used, with the number of households selected proportionate to population size. Households are chosen randomly within a primary sampling unit or secondary sampling unit, and one respondent is selected at random from each selected household to participate in the survey. Interviewers administer the survey in the countrys local language, using handheld electronic data collection devices. Interviews are conducted privately and same-sex interviewers are used in countries where culturally appropriate (e.g., Bangladesh). Response rates and number of participants for the three countries in 2009 were as follows: Bangladesh, 93.6% and 9,629; Thailand, 94.2% and 20,566; and Uruguay, 95.6% and 5,581. To examine differences in tobacco use by sex, estimates of current tobacco use in the three countries were analyzed for both smoked tobacco products and smokeless tobacco products. To examine differences in tobacco marketing awareness by sex, yes responses were analyzed to questions regarding whether participants had noticed advertising, promotion, or sponsorship of cigarettes in the preceding 30 days. Estimates were reported for noticing any cigarette marketing, noticing marketing in stores where cigarettes are sold, and noticing marketing other than in stores where cigarettes are sold.** In Bangladesh, similar questions regarding bidi and smokeless tobacco marketing were included in the survey. All estimates were weighted to reflect the noninstitutionalized population aged 15 years in each country, accounting for clustered sampling in the variance estimation. Statistical significance of differences in values was determined using a chi-square test, with significance determined at p<0.05. In all three countries, current tobacco use was higher among males than females, but use of tobacco varied substantially by sex. In Bangladesh, overall smoking prevalence among females (1.5%) was far lower than males (44.7%). However, the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use among females (27.9%) and males (26.4%) was approximately the same. In Thailand, smoking prevalence was much lower among females, compared with males (3.1% versus 45.6%), but smokeless tobacco use was higher among females than males (6.3% versus 1.3%, respectively). In Uruguay, 19.8% of females were current smokers, compared with 30.7% of males, but only one of the 5,581 participants reported using smokeless tobacco. Regardless of age group or region type smokers (urban or rural), males were more likely to smoke than females in all three countries. Among both males and females, smoking prevalence varied by age group but did not vary greatly by region type. In Bangladesh and Thailand, smokeless tobacco use among both males and females increased with age group, and smokeless tobacco use was higher in rural than urban areas. In each of these countries, the greatest prevalence of smokeless tobacco use was among women aged 65 years: 64.1% in Bangladesh and 32.9% in Thailand. The percentage of females who noticed any cigarette advertising, sponsorship, or promotion in the preceding 30 days was 29.3% in Bangladesh, 14.5% in Thailand, and 40.0% in Uruguay. Among males, the prevalence was 68.0% in Bangladesh, 17.4% in Thailand, and 49.0% in Uruguay. Among females, awareness of cigarette marketing in stores where cigarettes are sold was 22.0% in Bangladesh, 7.6% in Thailand, and 24.0% in Uruguay. In Thailand and Uruguay, little or no difference in awareness of instore cigarette marketing was observed between males and females; however, in Bangladesh, the prevalence among males (54.8%) was more than double the prevalence among females. Similar patterns by sex were observed for awareness of cigarette marketing other than in stores where cigarettes are sold. The percentage of females who noticed tobacco advertising, sponsorship, or promotion other than in stores where cigarettes are sold was 16.5% in Bangladesh, 8.3% in Thailand, and 31.6% in Uruguay. In all three countries, awareness of cigarette advertising was greater among females aged 1524 years than women aged 25 years. Similar age differences were observed among males in all three countries. In Bangladesh, awareness of bidi (80.1%) and smokeless tobacco (69.9%) marketing was widespread among females and did not vary by age. In Thailand, for both males and females, those who lived in urban areas were more likely to report exposure to cigarette marketing than those in rural areas. This relationship also was observed among males in Uruguay. In contrast, awareness of both bidi and

smokeless tobacco marketing in Bangladesh was more common among males in rural areas than in urban areas.

Alcohol or wine or intoxicant is prohibited almost all major religion! Compiled by Md. Naim Khan President, Islamic Research Center Sweden (IRC) Email: info@ircs.se Mobile: 0046(0)704358955 Ref. Nr.: 2011/02/25-5:90-040
The question arises: Why is the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Islam? Answer: Alcohol has been the scourge of human society since time immemorial. It continues to cost countless human lives, and causes terrible misery to millions throughout the world. Alcohol is the root cause of several problems facing society. The statistics of soaring crime rates, increasing instances of mental illnesses and millions of broken homes throughout the world bear mute testimony to the destructive power of alcohol. PROHIBITION OF ALCOHOL IN THE QURAN The Glorious Quran prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verse: AL-QURAN 5:90: "O ye who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, (Dedication of) stones, And (divination by) arrows, Are an Abomination Of Satans handiwork; Eschew such (abomination), That ye may prosper." [1] Surah Baqaraa 2:219:Surah Nisa 4:43:Surah Maidah 5:90:PROHIBITION OF ALCOHOL IN THE BIBLE The Bible prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verses:

PROVERBS 20:1:"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." [2] EPHESIANS 5:18:"And be not drunk with wine." [2] PROHIBITION OF ALCOHOL IN HINDU SCRIPTURES MANUSCRIPT 9:235:The slayer of a Brahmana, (A twice-born man) who drinks (the spirituous liquor called) Sura, he who steals (the gold of a Brahmana), and he who violates a Guru's bed, must each and all be considered as men who committed mortal sins (mahapataka). [3] MANUSMRITI CHAPTER 9 VERSE 237-238237-For violating a Guru's bed, (the mark of) a female part shall be (impressed on the forehead with a hot iron); for drinking (the spirituous liquor called) Sura, the sign of a tavern; for stealing (the gold of a Brahmana), a dog's foot; form urdering a Brahmana, a headless corpse. 238- Excluded from all fellow ship at meals, excluded from all sacrifices, excluded from instruction and from matrimonial alliances, abject and excluded from all religious duties, let them wander over (this) earth. [3] LAW OF MANU 9:225 225. Gamblers, dancers and singers, cruel men, men belonging to an heretical sect, those following forbidden occupations, and sellers of spirituous liquor, let him instantly banish from his town. [3] LAW OF MANU 7:47 47. Hunting, gambling, sleeping by day, censoriousness, (excess with) women, drunkenness, (an inordinate love for) dancing, singing, and music, and useless travel are the tenfold set (of vices) springing from love of pleasure. [3] LAW OF MANU 7:50 50. Drinking, dice, women, and hunting, these four (which have been enumerated) in succession, he must know to be the most pernicious (harmful) in the set that springs from love of pleasure. [3] MANUSMRITI CHAPTER 11:55:Killing a Brahmana, drinking (the spirituous liquor called) Sura, stealing (the gold of a Brahmana), adultery with a Guru 's wife, and associating with such (offenders), they declare (to be) mortal sins (mahapataka). [3] MANUSMRITI 11:94 Sura, indeed, is the dirty refuse (mala) of grain, sin also is called dirt (mala); hence a Brahmana, a Kshatriya, and a Vaisya shall not drink Sura. [3]

RIGVEDA: BOOK 8, HYMM 2, VERSE 12:12 Quaffed juices fight within the breast. The drunken praise not by their wine, The naked praise not when it rains. [4] RIGVEDA: BOOK 8, HYMM 21, VERSE 14:14 Thou findest not the wealthy man to be thy friend: those scorn thee who are flown with wine. [4] ALCOHOL INHIBITS THE INHIBITORY CENTRE The human beings possess an inhibitory centre in their brains. This inhibitory centre prevents the person from doing things that he considers wrong. For instance a person does not normally use abusive language while addressing his parents or elders. If he has to answer the call of nature, his inhibitory centre will prevent him from doing so in public. Therefore he uses the toilet. When a person consumes alcohol, the inhibitory centre itself is inhibited. That is precisely the reason that an inebriated person is often found to be indulging in behavior that is completely uncharacteristic of him. For instance the intoxicated person is found to use abusive and foul language and does not realize his mistake even if he is addressing his parents. Many even urinate in their clothes. Neither do they talk nor walk properly. They even misbehave. A. CASES OF ADULTERY, RAPE, INCEST AND AIDS ARE FOUND MORE AMONG ALCOHOLICS According to National Crime Victimization Survey Bureau of Justice (U.S. Department of Justice) in the year 1996 alone everyday on an average 2,713 rapes took place. The statistics tell us that the majority of the rapists, were intoxicated while committing the crime. The same is true in cases of molestation. According to statistics (Incest book by Rev. Jimmy Swegat), 8% of Americans commit incest i.e. one in every twelve to thirteen persons in America is involved in incest. According to Jimmy Swegat an Evangelist writes his book Incest that 13% American commits incest (father-daughter, mother-son, fatherdaughter in law, brother-sister etc). Almost all the cases of incest are due to intoxication of one or both the persons involved. One of the major factors associated with the spread of AIDS, the most dreaded disease, is alcoholism. EVERY ALCOHOLIC WAS INITIALLY A SOCIAL DRINKER Many may argue in favour of liquor by calling themselves social drinkers. They claim that they only have one or two pegs and they have self-control and so never get intoxicated. Investigations reveal that every alcoholic started as a social drinker. Not a single alcoholic or drunkard initially starts drinking with the intention of becoming an alcoholic or a drunkard. No social drinker can say that I have been having alcohol for several years and that I have so much self-control that I have never been intoxicated even a single time. IF A PERSON IS INTOXICATED JUST ONCE AND COMMITS SOMETHING SHAMEFUL, IT WILL REMAIN WITH HIM FOR A LIFETIME. Suppose a social drinker loses his self-control just once. In a state of intoxication he commits rape or incest. Even if the act is later regretted, a normal human being is likely to

carry the guilt throughout his life. Both the perpetrator and the victim are irreparably and irreversibly damaged. ALCOHOL IS PROHIBITED IN THE HADITH The Prophet of Islam Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3371.: "Alcohol is the mother of all evils and it is the most shameful of evils."In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3392 "Anything which intoxicates in a large quantity, is prohibited even in a small quantity." Thus there is no excuse for a nip or a tot. Not only those who drink alcohol are cursed but also those who deal with them directly or indirectly are cursed by Allah. According to Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3380. : It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Allahs curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol. The one who distills it, the one for whom it has been distilled, the one who drinks it, the one who transports it, the one to who it has been brought, the one whom serves it, the one who sells it, the one who utilizes money from it, the one who buys it and the one who buys it for someone else."[1] DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH ALCOHOLISM There are several scientific reasons for the prohibition of consumption of intoxicants i.e. alcohol. The maximum number of deaths in the world related to any one particular cause is due to the consumption of alcohol. Millions of people die every year only because of intake of alcohol. I need not go into the details of all the ill-effects of alcohol since most of them are commonly known. Below is a simple list of few of the alcohol related illnesses: Cirrhosis of Liver is the most well known alcohol associated disease. Others are Cancer of Oesophagus, Cancer of Head and Neck, Cancer of Liver (Hepatoma), Cancer of Bowel, etc. Oesophagitis, Gastritis, Pancreatitis and Hepatitis are linked with alcohol consumption. Cardiomyopathy, Hypertension, Coronary Artherosclerosis, Angina and Heart Attacks are linked with heavy alcohol intakes. Strokes, Apoplexy, Fits and different types of Paralysis are linked with alcohol intake. Peripheral Neuropathy, Cortical Atrophy, Cerebellar Atrophy are well-known syndromes caused by alcohol consumption. Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome with amnesia of recent events, confabulations and retainment of memory to old events with different types of paralysis are mainly due to thiamine deficiency due to excessive alcohol intake. Beriberi and other deficiencies are not uncommon among alcoholics. Even Pellagra occurs in alcoholics. Delerium Tremens is a serious complication that may occur during recurrent infection of alcoholics or post operatively. It also occurs during abstention as a sign of withdrawal effect. It is quite serious and may cause death even if treated in well equipped centres.

Numerous Endocrine Disorders have been associated with alcoholism ranging from Myxodema to Hyperthyroidism and Florid Cushing Syndrome. Hematological ill effects are long and variable. Folic acid deficiency, however, is the most common manifestation of alcoholic abuse resulting in Macrocytic Anemia. Zeives syndrome is a triad of Hemolytic Anemia, Jaundice and Hyperlipaedemia that follows alcoholic binges. Thrombocytopenia and other platelet abnormalities are not rare in alcoholics. The commonly used tablet metronidazole (flagyl) interacts badly with alcohol. Recurrent infection is very common among chronic alcoholics. The resistance to disease and the immunological defense system are compromised by alcohol intake. Chest infections are notorious in alcoholics. Pneumonia, Lung Abcess, Emphysema and Pulmonary Tuberculosis are all common in alcoholics. During acute alcoholic intoxication, the drunk person usually vomits, the cough reflexes which are protective are paralysed. The vomitus thus easily pass to the lung causing Pneumonia or Lung Abscess. Occasionally it may even cause suffocation and death. The ill effects of alcohol consumption on women deserves special mention. Females are more vulnerable to alcohol-related Cirrhosis than men. During pregnancy alcohol consumption has a severe detrimental effect on the foetus. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is being recognised more and more in the medical profession. Skin diseases are also related to alcohol indulgence. Eczema, Alopecia, Nail Dystrophy, Paronychia (infection around the nails) and Angular Stomatitis (inflammation of the angle of the mouth) are common diseases among alcoholics. ALCOHOLISM IS A DISEASE Medical doctors have now turned liberal towards alcoholics and call alcoholism a disease rather than an addiction. The Islamic Research Foundation has published a pamphlet that says: If alcohol is a disease, it is the only disease that: Is sold in bottles Is advertised in newspapers, magazines, on radio and television Has licensed outlets to spread it Produces revenue for the government Brings violent deaths on the highways Destroys family life and increases crime Has no germs or viral cause ALCOHOLISM IS NOT A DISEASE IT IS SATANS HANDIWORK Allah (swt) in His Infinite Wisdom has warned us against this snare of Satan. Islam is called the "Deen-ul-Fitrah" or the natural religion of Man. All its injunctions are aimed at preserving the natural state of man. Alcohol is a deviation from this natural state, for the individual as well as for society. It degrades man to a level below that of the beasts he claims to be superior to. Hence the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Islam. Read news article says about Sweden: Sweden tops European rape league-

In Sweden, 46 incidents of rape are reported per 100,000 residents. Researchers behind the EU study, which will be presented on Tuesday, conclude that rape appears to be a more common occurrence in Sweden than in continental European countries. This figure is double as many as in the UK which reports 23 cases, and four times that of the other Nordic countries, Germany and France. The figure is up to 20 times the figure for certain countries in southern and eastern Europe. The study, which is financed by the Brusselsbased EU fund Daphne II, compared how the respective judicial systems managed rape cases across eleven EU countries. Sweden is shown in an unfavourable light, according to the study. The high figures in Sweden are not only due to an increased tendency to report rapes, and even other more minor sexual offences. The opposite is in fact the case, the researchers argue; rape simply appears to be a more common occurrence in Sweden than in the other EU countries studied. Over 5,000 rapes (5-10% are reported according to br) are reported in Sweden per annum while reports in other countries of a comparable size amounted to only a few hundred. Early sexual debuts, high alcohol consumption, "free sexuality" and the "right to say no" quite simply results in more rapes, the study concludes. [5] More notes from following references (2) will be added soon.

WHOs recently published International Guide for Monitoring Alcohol Consumption and Harm (WHO 2000) stresses the need for individual countries to develop their own capacity and empirical base for national alcohol monitoring. Alcoholic beverage marketers targeting of young drinkers in recent years, introducing an array of inexpensive new products, such as alcopops, alcoholic energy drinks, premixed cocktails At the same time, beverage preferences among young drinkers, at least in the developed countries where there is evidence, appear to be converging on heavily marketed and inexpensive products such as beer and cider, as well as the products mentioned above. There is evidence that young people are starting to drink at earlier ages. Longitudinal studies have found that the earlier young people start drinking, the more likely they are to experience alcohol-related injury and alcohol dependence later in life. Alcohol use may also cause physiological harm to young people. There is no evidence that alcohol use has any health benefits for young people. The patterns of alcohol use among young people in developed countries lead to a number of negative consequences, including alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides and drownings, that play a significant role in mortality statistics. The impact of these drinking patterns on youth mortality and morbidity as they spread into developing countries is as yet unknown, but likely to be of equivalent or greater magnitude as a result of the relative lack of health care services and other mitigating or protective factors. Marketing has played a critical role in the global convergence of patterns of alcohol use. In developed and developing countries, marketing activities include contests, games, and cartoons on world-wide web pages; use of popular music and the issue of alcohol-branded CDs; promotions in hip clubs and magazines oriented to young people; sponsorship of sporting events; and the creation of alcoholbranded CD and comic books stores. Such marketing activities in developing countries diffuse in an environment with few of the health and safety protections available in developed countries. Boys are more likely than girls to drink and to drink heavily, except in in several European countries, where levels of drinking among young females have risen to or surpassed those among young males. These findings should be a powerful impetus for action world-wide. It is critical that countries begin to monitor alcohol use and consequences among young people, and WHO recommends that Member States use the International Guidelines for Monitoring Alcohol Consumption and Related Harm (WHO 2000) to begin to do so.

However, monitoring a ship that is sinking will not save the lives of those on board. Alcohol use among young people is approaching the status of an international epidemic. The global alcohol market is dominated by a few multinationals, whose concentrated resources fuel the world-wide expansion of alcohol marketing. Building a web of subsidiaries and joint ventures, these companies are using marketing technologies tested and in some cases banned in developed countries to promote alcohol consumption in the developing world (Jernigan 1997). An international problem requires an international solution. Action must be taken, by the alcohol industry and its marketers, by public health policy makers in Member States, by non-governmental organisations, and by international organisations to avert replicating or exceeding in developing countries the already high levels of alcoholrelated harm among young people in the developed countries. Specifically: Use of alcoholic beverages should not be promoted in any way among young people. This includes the creation of products oriented to young drinkers; the appropriation of activities, images and language such as games, cartoon characters and slang to promote alcoholic beverages; and the packaging of alcohol in amounts and at prices oriented to the limited financial resources of most young people. National governments should employ a culturally appropriate mix of policies to support the above, including restrictions on the content and placement of alcohol advertising and marketing materials, the promotion and implementation of health oriented taxation policies, and limits on the availability of alcohol to young people such as minimum age drinking laws. International trade agreements must allow exceptions in order to restrain trade in alcohol, when such exceptions are taken to support the health of the public.

News articles published on Monday, Nov. 17 2008 (HealthDayNews): Even low levels of alcohol can impair brain function, says a study that found the specific areas affected by amounts of alcohol tantamount to social drinking. Low levels of alcohol affect motor coordination, memory and lower social inhibitions at a blood alcohol level of 0.01 percent, far below the legal drinking and driving limit of 0.08 percent, says lead researcher Dr. Richard Olsen, a professor of pharmacology at the University of California at Los Angeles. "This is the effect one or two drinks will have," he adds. In experiments with gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in animal cells, Olsen and his colleagues found some receptors, namely GABA receptors with a beta-3 subunit and a delta subunit, responded when exposed to low levels of ethanol. These GABA receptors responded to low levels of alcohol compared with other GABA receptors with subunits, such as gamma-2, that respond to much higher levels, far higher than achieved in social drinking, Olsen says. The GABA receptors that respond to low levels of alcohol are in cellular areas and brain regions that control the effects of alcohol on behavior, he notes. These areas include the cerebellum, which controls motor coordination, the hippocampal formation, which affects memory loss, and the thalamus, which is involved with sleep and effects of anesthetics. The report appears in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Olsen says some of these receptors have not been tested for reaction to alcohol before. These receptors are also being looked at to see the effects of anesthetics. This finding is useful because researchers may be able to effect the action of alcohol if they know exactly how it works at the molecular and cellular level on GABA receptors, he adds. It is possible the changes that occur in the brain after chronic abuse of alcohol can involve changes in these receptors, and this may help scientists understand alcohol dependence and abuse. Researchers have some evidence that GABA receptors are indeed modified by continued exposure to alcohol, Olsen notes. Currently, Olsen's team is taking the next step by trying to duplicate their findings in rats. "If we understand the action of alcohol at the cellular and molecular level, it is helpful in treating the bad effects that alcohol may have," Olsen says. "We may be able to develop antidotes or treatments for intoxication or overdoses and coma and life-threatening effects as well as being able to understand and treat alcohol abuse," he adds. Dr. H. Scott Swartzwelder, a professor psychiatry of at Duke University, comments, "We have always known that alcohol has some kind of effect on GABA function, because GABA is involved in learning and sleep." The results of this study are compelling because it shows concentrations that are relevant to the human experience, and there may be a specific target that will let researchers study the effects of alcohol, [Leading researcher, of California University,

Swartzwelder adds.] "This is important because alcohol is a very dirty drug: it doesn't just do one thing; it affects many types of receptors in the brain," he says. "This finding could lead to the development of drugs that could
block or reverse some of the effects of alcohol."

"We have hoped for a long time to find a drug that would counteract the acute effects of alcohol and also the chronic effects of alcohol. Chronic alcohol use does change the ways the GABA system works, and it stays changed. Knowing how alcohol affects the GABA system may lead to drugs that can reverse these changes," Swartzwelder speculates. Sweden counts the cost of substance abuse

The cost of drug, alcohol and prescription medicine abuse amounts to 150 billion kronor ($22.4 billion) per annum in Sweden, according to an ongoing government inquiry. Alcohol abuse is calculated to cost the society the most - 66 billion kronor - followed by narcotics and prescription drug abuse, which costs an annual 62 and 20 billion respectively. a scientific study published yesterday in the UK rates alcohol as being more damaging than heroin - when the measure of damage is extended from the individual user to the whole society http://www.thelocal.se/29968/20101102/

Efforts to curb youth drinking 'ineffective'

A new report released on Monday has questioned the efficacy of the Swedish government's investment of about 900 million kronor ($135.81 million) over the last 10 years in reducing youth alcohol consumption. Girls aged 16 drank 2.9 litres of alcohol in 2000 and 2.1 litres in 2009. The corresponding amounts for boys were 4.6 litres and 3.2 litres. The percentage who do not drink at all has also increased from 33 percent to 48 percent among boys and 25 percent to 36 percent among girls from 2000 to 2009. http://www.thelocal.se/29948/20101101/

Young men at greater risk for alcohol dependence

The number of young men who drink sufficient amounts of alcohol that they risk becoming dependent has almost doubled in four years, according to a forthcoming report from the National Institute of Public Health (Statens folkhlsoinstitut FHI). Most evident is that an increasing number of young men between the ages of 20 and 29 drink so much that they run the risk of becoming dependent on alcohol. The risk level for the entire group increased significantly between 2004 and 2008. Among men aged 20-24, those at risk increased from 9 to 13 percent. Among women aged

Alcohol Abuse - The Facts!

An alcohol fact sheet published by the Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) reports that in developed countries, alcohol is the third leading cause of disease and injury, alcohol causing nearly 10 percent of all ill health and premature deaths in Europe. This is ahead of obesity, diabetes and asthma and second only to smoking and blood pressure conditions. In addition to the large-scale problems of intoxication, addiction and a multitude of alcohol related social problems, alcohol on a worldwide level causes an estimated 20 30 percent of cancer of the oesophagus, liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, epilepsy, homicide / murder and motor vehicle accidents

In the 2002 World Health Report, the World Health Organisation estimated that globally 1.8 million peoples deaths every year are directly attributable to alcohol consumption. Moreover, it has been proven that a countrys drinking levels directly parallel the level of harm caused, ie the more a country drinks, the more alcohol-related harm occurs. The UK is one of the top ten in the world for alcohol consumption per head of population and alcohol abuse is clearly escalating. The Office for National Statistics reported in November 2006 that the alcohol related death rate in the UK doubled from 4,144 deaths in 1991 to 8,386 deaths in 2005. The death rate may be broken down by gender, with studies indicating that alcohol related death rates are much higher in males. The gap between female and male death rates is increasing and in 2005 the rate was more than twice that of females with males accounting for more than two thirds of the total alcohol related deaths. Those living in deprived areas have a much greater risk of an alcohol related death.

Alcohol abuse as a cause of death in the UK has been estimated at 8000 40,000 according to the IAS. The lower figure constitutes deaths caused by alcohol defined causes such as chronic liver disease. The upper figure is an estimate of all other deaths in which alcohol has contributed but is not alcohol defined, such as falls, suicide and motor vehicle accidents. Alcohol misuse within the UK is highest in Scotland. Whilst the population in England drink more frequently, the Scottish population are more likely to exceed recommended daily limits of alcohol with males consuming more than double female alcohol intake. A quarter of women and two in five men in Scotland exceed their daily limit. There were 41,651 alcohol related discharges from hospitals in Scotland alone in 2006/7 which is an increase from the previous years statistic of 39,061. According to the Chief Executive of the national charity Alcohol Focus Scotland, the number of people in Scotland hospitalised through drink has soared by 270% in only 15 years.

Additional Alcohol Statistics

Here are some examples of alcohol related harm in Scotland caused by factors other than an alcohol related disease as published by the Scottish Government:

Nearly half of those who commit murder in Scotland - whose drink status is known - were drunk at the time of the offence. Alcohol is the greatest single contributory factor in deaths caused by house fire in Scotland. A third of adult pedestrians killed on the roads in Scotland had been drinking and one in six road accident deaths are due to drinking. Alcohol misuse costs Scotlands economy around 1.6 billion per annum along with tragic human costs including the fact that between 80 100,000 children are living in homes in Scotland where one or both parents suffer from an alcohol problem.

The Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker estimates the overall economic damage as somewhat heavier alcohol abuse still costs us 20 billion a year in crime and damage to health. The UK is demonstrating its commitment to combating alcohol misuse and action taken so far includes the allocation of funds to alcohol treatment and rehabilitation centres, public information campaigns to raise alcohol awareness, a licensing act and implementation of local alcohol action plans with strategies for a long term proactive approach to dealing with nationwide alcohol abuse.
In the UK, there have been several recent (November 07) studies released that show an increasing statistical trend in both drug and alcohol abuse affecting young people and their safety. As a company, we regularly monitor drug statistics - which we often write about in our drug-aware blog. The drug abuse statistics below are of

particular note, so we have developed a page on our main web site specifically for them:

Drug Abuse Statistics from Auto Trader:

One detailed survey of over 8000 young motorists (aged from 17 to 24) carried out by Auto Trader, which is a UK motoring magazine and website, showed a frightening trend towards driving under the influence of either drugs, drink or both. In today's drug abuse and binge drinking culture amongst young adults and teenagers it is unfortunately no surprise that the statistics are high. In fact, as many as 17% of the young motorists surveyed admitted regular use of Cannabis, more alarmingly 12% frequently use the dangerous and addictive class A drug Cocaine, and 10% revealed regular use of Ecstasy. However, the greater danger comes from upwards of 10% admitting that they regularly drove their cars whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. When questioned about driving under the influence of substances, over 40% felt fine to drive their vehicles after using illegal drugs and 31% found it acceptable to drive after consuming alcohol. A high proportion were unaware of the actual legal limits for alcohol consumption when driving and as a result 8% had already been involved in an accident while under the influence, with a further 11% admitting a near miss.

Drug and alcohol abuse statistics in relation to road deaths.

Just over a third of deaths on UK roads are now young people aged 25 or under, so this is without doubt a serious problem. This equates to the death or serious injury of a young motorist or passenger every hour on average across the United Kingdom.

Teenage drug and alcohol use statistics.

Other notable recent statistics include the number of younger teenagers using drink or drugs. Last year one in seven people admitted to Accident and Emergency departments across the UK for alcohol related health issues were under 14 years old - a total of over 2239 cases. Many have blamed a surge in advertising for alcohol between 3pm and 5pm, which corresponds to when children have come home from school. Of course, the government spend approximately 3.7 million annually on anti-drinking and alcohol awareness campaigns, but this is dwarfed by the estimated 200 million annual spend on advertising by the alcoholic drinks industry. Drug and alcohol abuse in teens is becoming more of a problem each year as our culture changes. A key statistic is that the average starting age of Heroin use in many towns and cities in the UK is just 15 years of age - so we have an obvious duty to prevent young people from getting inadvertently caught up in addiction through misguided experimentation. See also our article entitled Scottish Drug Abuse Statistics.

What can parents do about these drug statistics?

Many parents don't know where to start when considering how to tackle the problem. So what can be done about this? Well, many parents aren't aware that home drug testing kits and alcohol test kits are easily available and can be used to act as a deterrent. They can also be used by teenagers as a valid reason why they can't use illegal drugs when under peer pressure. Being able to say "Sorry, I can't take drugs because I get tested at home" really can make a significant difference. The responsible use of home drug test products (with open communication and cooperation) can play a pivotal role in keeping younger people safe and can help to mend damaged relationships and build trust. Some people wonder whether testing removes trust from a relationship, but we believe that the substance abuse has often already done that and home testing can be used to rebuild trust. So if you would like more drug information, or to purchase drug or alcohol test kits for use in the home, visit our dedicated home drug test site www.1st-home-drugtests.com to buy drug tests online. Alternatively, for employers we have a page specifically for information on random drug testing in the workplace on our drug-aware web site.

Drunk driving Swedish police rarely fired: report

Published: 18 Feb 11 12:39 CET | Double click on a word to get a translation Online: http://www.thelocal.se/32132/20110218/

Share Despite 55 serving police officers being caught drink driving over the past five years, only one has lost his job, the Metro daily reported on Thursday.

Strike looms as Swedish bank union locks horns (18 Feb 11) Sweden Democrat expelled from union (18 Feb 11) Soviet-era files reveal Swedes' civil war fears (17 Feb 11)

"If there is a disorder and a treatment plan, we generally do not decide on dismissal according to established practice," general counsel Lotta Gustafsson of the National Police Board (Rikspolisstyrelsen) told the newspaper. The number of police officers convicted of drunk driving has sharply increased in the last two years. Of the 216 police officers who were prosecuted from 2005 to 2010, one-quarter faced drunk driving offences, according to statistics compiled by the Metro. Of the 55 police officers who were convicted of drunk driving, one-third of the cases involved aggravated drink driving, often accompanied by short prison sentences. In several cases, the officer were also involved in crashes with other vehicles and also neglected treatment plans. However, only one officer has lost his job through the police's staff disciplinary board (Polisens personalansvarsnmnd - PAN), which expresses its opinions according to the Swedish Labour Court's (Arbetsdomstolen) practices, the report showed. The sole policeman who lost his job was twice suspected of driving drunk through two police checkpoints in Gothenburg and was sentenced for a total of 11 different crimes. Other police officers were allowed to keep their jobs due to reasons such as that they were not considered to have substance abuse problems and had relatively low blood alcohol content levels when they were pulled over, the report said. Among the incidents included in the report included drunk police officers driving into ditches and garage doors and one was involved in a highway crashes heavily under the influence of alcohol. All of the officers involved kept their jobs. All the convictions involved incidents which occurred while off-duty. When asked if there is a risk that police officers would abuse the practice of not being fired after getting caught for the first time, Swedish Police Union (Polisfrbundet) chairperson told Metro, "I believe and hope that they will not." Swedes drink less alcohol: study

Published: 19 Feb 11 10:35 CET | Double click on a word to get a translation Online: http://www.thelocal.se/32146/20110219/ Share Swedish average alcohol consumption declined in 2009, in comparison with 2008, but remains high in a historical perspective, a new report published on Friday showed.

Drunk driving Swedish police rarely fired: report (18 Feb 11) Beer in Sweden: it's not as bad as you think (17 Feb 11) Swedish alcoholism drug awaits human study (14 Feb 11)

Average alcohol consumption, measured as litres of pure alcohol, amounted to 9.3 litres per person aged 15 and over, according to the report compiled by The Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD) at Stockholm University. The figure represents a decline from the 9.5 litres recorded in 2008 and SoRAD concluded in its report that a further decline is anticipated in 2010. "The decline in the total alcohol consumption which was noted nationally during 2009 covers the whole country as a result of a reduction of imports and smuggling," SoRAD concluded. In real terms this means that an average Swede drank 5 litres of spirits, 30 litres of wine, 69 litres of strong and medium strength beer and around 3 litres of cider and mixed drinks. The state-owned monopoly alcohol retailer Systembolaget accounted for an increasing proportion of beer and wine sales and, together with licensed premises and sales of medium strength beer, accounted for 78 percent of total consumption, up from 74 percent in 2008. Systembolaget's sales accounted for 62 percent of total sales while import and smuggling accounted for 14 and 6 percent respectively; 10 percent was consumed in restaurants, 6 percent was accounted for by beer sold in grocery retail stores, and 2 percent was homemade. Wine is the most popular drink of choice for Swedes, accounting for 41 percent of consumption, followed by beer and spirits on 35 and 22 percent respectively. With regards to smuggling and import, there were significant regional variations highlighted in the report, with as much as 30 percent of the alcohol consumed in southern Sweden brought into the country this way.

Stockholm residents consumed the most alcohol on average in 2010, with around 10 litres of pure alcohol per person, while the province of Norrland came in lowest with 7.5 litres. Norrbotten and Vsterbotten in the north of Sweden, and Jnkping in central Sweden, lead the country when it comes to alcohol abstinence, with 35 percent of women and 25 percent of men eschewing the drink. Despite the small total decline in recent years, alcohol consumption remains relatively high in a longer historical perspective, with 2009 consumption some 15-20 percent higher than in the middle of the 1990s.

Question no.7518)Is Non-Alcoholic bear permitted to a muslim? Please give me an answer in light of Quran and Sunna.
[Topic:Alcohol]

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Is Non-Alcoholic bear permitted to a muslim? Please give me an answer in light of Quran and Sunna.
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer: Non-alcoholic bear lawful In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Your Question: Is Non-Alcoholic bear permitted to a muslim? Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 90-91: O you who have believed! Khamr (all types of intoxicants), games of chance, idols, and divining arrows are all abominable works of Shaitaan; therefore, stay (far) away from these so that you may attain success. Indeed, Shaitaan seeks to sow enmity and hatred among you by means of khamr (intoxicants) and gambling, and to prevent you from the Remembrance of Allah and from Salaah. Will you not, then, abstain from these things? Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3672 Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: Every intoxicant is khamr, and every intoxicant is haraam. Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3679 Narrated by Aisha I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: Every intoxicant is haraam; quantity of anything causes intoxication, a handful of it is (also) haraam. if a

Sahih Muslim Hadith 4962 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah Allah's Messenger (saws) said: Every intoxicant is haraam! Verily Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, made a covenant to those who drank intoxicants to make them drink Tinat al-Khabal. The companions asked: O Allah's Messenger (saws), what is Tinat al-Khabal? He (saws) said: It is the sweat of the denizens of Hell, or the discharge of the denizens of Hell. Allah and His Messenger (saws) have declared every type and manifestation of khamr, or a drink which causes intoxication, as absolutely unlawful for the believers who sincerely fear in Allah and the Last Day.

If what is known today as non-alcoholic beer intoxicates when consumed then indeed it would be included amongst the drinks which are classified as khamr, and thus unlawful..but if the non-alcoholic beer when consumed does not intoxicate, regardless of what it is called or named, it will be considered absolutely lawful for the believers to consume, if indeed they wish to do so. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Assalamu Aleikum Brother. First of all let me wish you Ramadan Mubaarak. Brother what I need to know is, we have some of our relatives who hold parties and also they serve liquor (but in a separate room) so we are also invited for these parties. Brother, please let me know should we attend such parties since their our relatives or should we avoid. Appreciate your answer. Jazakallah.

Answer: Attend parties with alcohol In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3732 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar The Prophet (saws) said: He who does not accept an invitation (without a genuine or valid reason) which he receives has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (saws). The Messenger of Allah (saws) commanded and guided the believers to accept the invitations of their believing brethren; and in light of the above guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws), if one rejects an invitation without an absolutely genuine or valid reason has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (saws). Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 90-91:

O you who have believed!

Khamr (all types of intoxicants), games of

chance, idols, and divining arrows are all abominable works of the Shaytaan; therefore, stay (far) away from these so that you may attain success. Indeed, the Shaytaan seeks to sow enmity and

hatred among you by means of khamr (intoxicants) and gambling, and to prevent you from the Remembrance of Allah and from Salaah. you not, then, abstain from these things? Will

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2776 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik Allah's Messenger (saws) invoked the curse of Allah on ten people in connection with wine: the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 4477 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah The Prophet (saws) said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must not sit at a cloth (table or gathering) where wine is being circulated." Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3765 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar The Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade the sitting at a cloth (table or gathering) on which wine is drunk. Allah Subhanah has commanded the believers to stay far far away from any and all types of intoxicants, and the Messenger of Allah (saws) explicitly forbade the believers to sit or join in a gathering where alcohol is being served. Thus, if one has prior knowledge that alcohol will be served at a gathering or party, it would be purer and better for them to fear Allah and abstain from attending such gatherings, for Allah indeed has the biggest right that He be obeyed. But if one attends a gathering or party, knowing that alcohol will be served there, even if they do not consume alcohol themselves, they will indeed share a burden of the sin. Thus as much as it is an extremely preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to accept the invitations of their believing brethren, if one has prior knowledge that alcohol will be served at the gathering, it would be best to decline such an invitation. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

[Topic:Alcohol]

no.8188)Children

consume

alcohol.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Dear Mr Burhan, A friend who is a practicing Muslim was grieved when he found out recently that his two grown up sons consume alcoholic beverages and that too for many years but not in his presence or in their house. One was in business with him, the other lived with him in the same house. My friend's reaction was to 'disown' them, turn the son out of his business and the other out of his house with grandchildren. The sons felt they are adults and responsible for their own actions. Parents should not take the onus upon themselves or feel guilty about it. While my friend feels good that he has cleansed the ill, his wife is upset at the separation and the harsh stance taken by the husband, though she accepts he has done the right thing according to their shared belief. Secondary questions that arise: 1. Are the parents responsible for breach of Shariah by adult children, in the eyes of Allah? 2. Would the parents be guilty by way of association if they allowed status quo even if they would tell them that it is wrong and they should stay away from alcohol? 3. The mother feels she would persuade them to give up and instead of taking drastic action they could have made an effort to educate them of this gross error and sin they picked up knowing full well the parents abhor it. In the light of the above, could you please guide how the parets can remain firm about the wrong but work on them rather than chase them away - from sight. Your reply will be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Children consume alcohol In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1: Are the parents responsible for breach of Shariah by adult children, in the eyes of Allah? Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 164 (part): .Every soul draws the meed of its acts on none but itself: If the believing parents of the children themselves feared Allah, strove their utmost in instilling the fear of Allah and the Last Day into their children during their growing years, strove to give them the best possible education and environment and tarbeeyah during their growing years and thus fulfilled their duty unto them.then if such children of believing parents chose to transgress the prescribed Boundaries of their Lord Creator after they have passed the age of puberty, the off-spring themselves shall bear the responsibility for their evil deeds and their parents will be absolutely blameless for the evil deeds committed by their off-spring. But if the parents themselves did not fear Allah, nor strove to fulfill their duty unto their children by instilling the fear of Allah and the Last Day into them in their growing years, or Allah forbid, encouraged them towards the transgression of the prescribed Boundaries of the Lord Creator..indeed the parents will bear a portion of the blame of the evil deeds committed by their children. Q-2: Would the parents be guilty by way of association if they allowed status quo even if they would tell them that it is wrong and they should stay away from alcohol? If the believing parents have fulfilled their duty unto their children during their growing years to the best of their ability, and subsequently find out that their adult off-spring are involved in as manifest a transgression as the consumption of alcohol..it would simply not be fitting for the believing parents, if indeed they fear Allah and the Last Day, and fear the consequence of what will inevitably befall their beloved offspring in the Presence of their Lord to maintain a status-quo or disregard or turn a blind-eye to the abominations committed by their adult off-spring without showing their utter disapproval at their manifest transgressions! Q-3: The mother feels she would persuade them to give up and instead of taking drastic action they could have made an effort to educate them of this gross error and sin they picked up knowing full well the parents abhor it. If the believing parents of such off-spring who have chosen to transgress the prescribed Boundaries of Allah Subhanah have even an iota of control over them.they should indeed try to persuade or even plead with them to fear Allah and the Last Day and save themselves from the Wrath and Anger of their Lord. If after their very best efforts, their persuasion or their pleading does not bring about the desired results, and they are in a position to be strict with them, or threaten them, or even punish them.and they believe that such actions would have the desired effect on the evil behavior or habits of their adult children, they should not hesitate to utilize whatever is their ability in their efforts to bring their children back to the Straight Path. What is not permissible in Islam that one disown or completely break the blood relations which the Lord Himself has created for them Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 13 Surah Ar-Raad verse 25: As for those who break their covenant with Allah after confirming it, who cut asunder relationships which Allah has bidden to be joined, and spread chaos on

the earth, theirs shall be the curse, and they shall have a wretched abode in the Hereafter. Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Bakarah verse 27: And He leads astray only those who disobey Allah, who break Allahs covenant after ratifying it, who cut asunder relationships what Allah has ordered to be joined, and who produce chaos on the Earth. These are indeed the people who are the losers. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.17 Narrated by Abu Huraira The Prophet (saws) said, "The word 'Ar-Rahm (womb) derives its name from ArRahman (i.e., one of the Names of Allah) and Allah said: 'I will keep good relation with the one who will keep good relation with you (the womb, i.e. kith and kin), and sever the relation with him who will sever the relation with you (the womb, i.e. kith and kin). Other than severing or completely breaking relations with them, the parents are well within their rights to do whatever it takes to show their utter and abject disapproval at the manifest transgressions of their adult children.and strive with whatever is in their power to remind their children to fear their Lord and His Inevitable and Tumultuous Accounting of that Last Day. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Not all haraam (forbidden) things in Islam are impure for example: gold and silk are declared haraam for the believing men, but gold and silk in their essence are not impure substances. Similarly, the majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that although the consumption of alcohol is haraam and absolutely forbidden, alcohol by itself is not an impure substance. If one uses or applies a beauty product like a cleanser or a toner, and that product happens to have some alcohol ingredient in it..as long as one does not actually consume that alcohol, the majority of the scholars are of the opinion that there is no harm in its external application. And Allah Alone Knows Best. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Assalamualikum. As understood we know that any food product is halaal if they are prepared as per the halaal requirement that is alcohol or any haraam product is not used during its preparation. But if any of the vessel used in the production is cleaned by disinfectants containing Alcohol. Will this food product still be termed as Halaal.
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer: Alcohol as cleansing agent In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Thus if a vessel or utensil used for preparing food has perchance been cleansed by disinfectants containing alcohol, and that vessel is thoroughly washed thereafter whereby no trace of the alcohol remains.lawful food prepared in this vessel will be deemed lawful for the believers to consume. and

alcohol.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Salaam o walekum my daddy is namazi after goin to umrah but hasn`t stop drinking alcohol. he drinks alcohol everyday..plz give us some solution...according to quran....khuda hafiz
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer: Prayer and alcohol In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Respected sister in Islam, if one is addicted to the evil of alcohol and at the same time one is steadfast in offering ones obligatory prayers..it is evident that such a person fears their Lord Creator and the Last Day, and has kept their relation with their Lord alive in their hearts..for such a person there is hope that if made aware, with wisdom and with patience, of the gravity of their sin of consuming alcohol which has been absolutely prohibited by their Lord, the person will be inclined towards taubah and repentance, Insha Allah. Depending on the nature of the person, one should try with patience and with wisdom, to amend the evil habit of consuming alcohol either by encouraging the person to turn back to his Lord Most Gracious in taubah and seeking repentance for his past transgressions.and if after ones very best efforts that does not work, one might try to warn the person regarding the severity and the gravity of the punishment which the Lord and His Messenger (saws) have described for those who consume intoxicants. As long as the person does not leave his obligatory prayers, there is always hope and a very good chance that one day the person might be persuaded to turn unto his Lord Most Merciful in repentance and thus amend his conduct, Insha Allah. Ref: Encourage the person towards the Mercy and Forgiveness of the Lord Whatever deeds one might have done in ones past, if one turns to Allah Subhanah in sincere Taubah and seeks forgiveness, Allah Subhanah has promised in the Holy Quran that He will forgive all the sins of such a repentant believer, even if one has committed the gravest sin of all: Shirk! Not only that, our Lord is so Merciful and Generous, that He not only will forgive the sins of such sincerely repentant believers, He will change their evil deeds done into good deeds!

The conditions or ways to seek sincere Taubah or Repentance from the Merciful Lord are: One is aware that he has sinned, and feels sorry and ashamed at his sin. Makes a solemn covenant and promise with Allah that he will not repeat his sin again. Turns to Allah and seeks forgiveness, before he has met with his appointment of death. Is a believer and does righteous good deeds thereafter. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumur verses 53-54: (O Prophet) say: O My servants who have wronged their own souls.Do not despair of Allahs Mercy! Surely, Allah forgives all sins. He indeed is the All Forgiving, All Merciful. Return to your Lord and submit to Him before the scourge overtakes you; for then you may get no help from anywhere. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 135-136: Allah likes such good people very much, who, if ever they commit a base deed or wrong their own soul by the commission of a sin, remember Allah instantly, and ask for forgiveness from Him for their shortcomings. For who, but Allah, can forgive sins? (And Allah loves those) who do not knowingly persist in the wrongs they did. These will be rewarded with forgiveness from Allah, and with Gardens beneath which canals flow, and they will reside therein forever! How excellent is the reward of those who do good deeds! Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 25 Surah Furqaan verses 63-71: The (true) servants of the Merciful are those who walk humbly on the earth. When the ignorant people behave insolently towards them, they say, Peace to you; (And those) who pass their nights in prostrating themselves and standing before their Lord and pray, O our Lord, save us from the torment of Hell, for its torment is killing! It is an evil abode, and an evil resting place. (And those) who, when they spend are neither extravagant, nor miserly, but keep the golden mean between the two extremes. (And those) who do not invoke any god but Allah Alone, nor kill a soul unjustly, which Allah has forbidden, nor commit adultery He who does this shall be punished for his sin, and his torment shall be doubled on the Day of Resurrection, and he shall abide in a state of ignominy; EXCEPT THE ONE WHO MAY HAVE REPENTED (AFTER THOSE SINS), AND HAVE BELIEVED AND DONE RIGHTEOUS DEEDS. For then, Allah will change his evil deeds into good deeds, and He is very Forgiving and Merciful. In fact, one who repents and does righteous deeds, returns to Allah as one rightly should! Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 54: When those come to you who believe in Our Signs, say: "Peace be on you! Your Lord had inscribed for Himself (the rule of) Mercy. Verily if any of you did evil in ignorance, and thereafter repented and amended (his conduct), Lo! He is OftForgiving, Most Merciful." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2357 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "He who repents of a sin is like him who has committed no sin." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2338 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Allah accepts a servant's repentance (taubah) till he gives up his spirit in death." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2339 Narrated by Abu Sa'id Allah's Messenger (saws) said that the Shaytaan said, "By Thy Might, my Lord, I shall continue to lead Thy servants astray as long as their spirits are in their bodies!" The Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, replied, "By My Might, Glory and Exalted Station, I shall continue to pardon them as long as they ask My forgiveness!" Sahih Muslim Hadith 6499 Narrated by Abu Dharr Ghaffari Allah's Messenger (saws) said that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, stated: He who comes with goodness, there are in store for him ten like those and even more than those; and he who comes with vice, it is only for that that which he is called to account. I even forgive him as I like, and he who draws close to Me by the span of a palm, I draw close to him by the cubit; and he who draws close to Me by the cubit, I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands; and he who walks towards Me, I rush towards him; and he who meets Me in the state that his sins fill the earth, but not associating anything with Me, I would meet Him with the same (vastness) of pardon (on My behalf)." Ref: Warnings regarding the Wrath and the Anger of Allah on those who consume intoxicants. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 90-91: 90 O ye who believe! Intoxicants (wine, alcohol, etc.), and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are (all) an abomination of the Shaytaan's handiwork: stay far far away from such (abominations) that ye may prosper. 91 The Shaytaan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the Remembrance of Allah and from prayer: will ye not then abstain? All types of intoxicants are so detestable and despicable in the Sight of Allah Subhanah that not only has The Lord Most Exalted and His Messenger (saws) declared all types of intoxicants (wine, alcohol, etc.) absolutely unlawful and haraam for the believers to consume, Allah Subhanah has specifically Commanded the believers in His Glorious Quran to stay far far away from it. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2776 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik Allah's Messenger (saws) invoked the Curse of Allah on ten (types of) people in connection with wine: the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 4477 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah

The Prophet (saws) said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must not (even) sit at a cloth (table or gathering) where wine is being circulated." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3653 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr The Prophet (saws) said, "An undutiful son, a gambler, one who casts up what he has given, and one who is addicted to wine will not enter Paradise." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3643 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "If anyone consumes khamr (intoxicants), Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he again repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats it a fourth time Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, and if he repents Allah will not forgive him, but will give him to drink of the river of the fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell." Question

[Topic:Alcohol]

no.7992)Wine

made

from

grapes

unlawful.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: Assalamualikum... I would like to know about wine, i know wine is regarded as haram in Islam but wine is made of grapes so why is it haram? and when a muslims goes to a non muslim country , and drinking wine before meal is tradition in some non muslim countries, if we dont drink its considered as bad manners in such cases are we supposed to drink????how will we explain them ..
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer: Wine made from grapes unlawful In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 90-91:

O you who have believed!

Khamr (all types of intoxicants),

games of chance, idols, and divining arrows are all abominable works of the Shaytaan; therefore, stay (far) away from these so that you may attain success. Indeed, the Shaytaan seeks to sow enmity

and hatred among you by means of khamr (intoxicants) and gambling, and to prevent you from the Remembrance of Allah and from Salaah. Will you not, then, abstain from these things?

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3672 Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: Every intoxicant is khamr (alcohol, wine, beer, drugs, etc.), and every khamr is haraam. Your Question: but wine is made of grapes so why is it haram?

Although the fruit grape is lawful in its essence, when the extract of this fruit is treated and fermented, it produces a drink which intoxicates..and every type of drink (or substance) which intoxicates when consumed is absolutely prohibited for the believers who sincerely fear Allah and the Last Day. Your Question: .if we dont drink its considered as bad manners in such cases are we supposed to drink????how will we explain them .. Such is the absolute detestability of intoxicants in the Sight of Allah that not only has the Lord Most Majestic and His Messenger (saws) prohibited its consumption for the believers, the Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade the believers to sit at a table or gathering where intoxicants are being drunk or circulated! If one perchance happens to visit a nation where wine or intoxicants are consumed, and one is invited to a gathering where one knows wine or alcohol will be drunk or circulated..it would be the duty of the believer who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day to politely but firmly inform the host that it is against his moral and religious principles to attend a gathering where wine is circulated. In our own humble experience, the disbelieving host has always and without exception, accepted the excuse without any ill-feeling whatsoever. But if perchance one fears that the host would feel bad or hold an ill-feeling, a believer should know that the consequences of the Displeasure and Wrath and Anger of the Lord Who Created far supersedes the displeasure of any in creation by a considerable and unimaginable margin! The Lord Most Majestic Most Supreme has a greater right that the believers should fear Him and His Displeasure. If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Question no.7703)My question is, an intoxicant is an intoxicant only when it intoxicates.

[Topic:Alcohol]

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters, As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you) One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question: I had read your explanation about the Alcohol. Two points I want to clarify. You have explained that Allah has forbidden any intoxicant to all beleivers. My question is, an intoxicant is an intoxicant only when it intoxicates. So why not use it as a medecine in very small quantities as it does not intoxicate. Like for some people they do not react when a snake or a scorpion bites, for some people alcohol or wine does not react. So for such people the intoxicant is not an intoxicant. So why they cannot consume it? And besides the word intoxicate means to loose ones control mentally and physically. If one does loose control mentally and physically, then it means that he is not intoxicated. Please explain.

Allah Subhanah and His Messenger (saws) have categorically forbidden the consumption of absolutely all types of intoxicants for the believers who sincerely fear Allah and the Last Day. Your Question: My question is, an intoxicant is an intoxicant only when it intoxicates. So why not use it as a medecine in very small quantities as it does not intoxicate. Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3679 Narrated by Aisha I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: Every intoxicant is haraam; if a (large) quantity of anything causes intoxication, a handful of it is (also) haraam. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that the use of intoxicants and other prohibited things as medicine, is unlawful. They base their arguments on the following guidance: Wa'il ibn Hujr al-Hadrami reported that, "Tariq ibn Suwaid asked the Prophet (saws) if he could use alcohol as medicine. The Prophet (saws) replied: 'It is not a cure, but a disease'.'' (Related by Muslim, Abu Daw'ud, and Tirmidhi.) Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (saws) reports that he (saws) once said: "Allah has not placed a cure for your diseases in things that He has forbidden for you.'' (Related by Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban. Bukhari has also related the same hadith on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud.) Abu ad-Darda reported that the Prophet (saws) said: "Allah has sent down both the malady and its remedy. For every disease He has created a cure. So seek medical treatment, but never with something the use of which Allah has prohibited.'' (Related by Abu Daw'ud.) Your Question: Like for some people they do not react when a snake or a scorpion bites, for some people alcohol or wine does not react. So for such people the intoxicant is not an intoxicant. So why they cannot consume it?

Such is the categorical prohibition of consuming any type or manifestation of khamr or intoxicants in Islam that not only has The Lord Most Majestic prohibited the believers from ever consuming it, The All-Knowing All-Wise Lord has Commanded the believers to stay far away from it, if indeed they fear Allah and wish to attain salvation on the Last Day! The appetite or level of intoxication of each individual might indeed be different; it is possible that one might need to drink a whole liter of whisky to get intoxicated, when another might get intoxicant with half a can of beer.that the consumption of alcohol intoxicates the human mind is not in question, but rather what quantity of its consumption intoxicatesfor alcohol is indeed a natural intoxicant! Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3679 Narrated by Aisha I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: Every intoxicant is haraam; quantity of anything causes intoxication, a handful of it is (also) haraam. if a

Such is the categorical prohibition of consuming alcohol in Islam, that not only did the Messenger of Allah (saws) call intoxicants the Umm-al-Khabaith (mother or root of all evil), but he (saws) declared that if one has knowledge that the consumption of a substantial quantity of something causes intoxication, even a handful (or drop) of it is also prohibited! Although the Messenger of Allah (saws) explicitly declared the consumption of intoxicants as haraam, the words used in the Glorious Quran by Allah Subhanah for the prohibition of intoxicants is fajtanebu (stay far far away from it!). For example, the consumption of swine, or blood, or dead meat, etc. are declared as haraam in the Quran..but there is no prohibition if for any reason one happens to approach it or sits at a table where these haraam products are being consumed..The majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that the term fajtanebu (stay far far away from it!) is much more stronger than

haraam, for not only are the believers forbidden from consuming intoxicants, they are forbidden from even coming near it!!!! Sahih Muslim Hadith 4962 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah Allah's Messenger (saws) said: Every intoxicant is haraam! Your Question: Some even claim you can drink ginger beer, is that true? Ginger beer is a type of carbonated beverage flavored primarily with ginger, lemon and sugar. The original recipe of what is known as ginger beer requires ginger, sugar, and water, to which is added a gelatinous substance called "ginger beer plant". Fermentation over a few days turns the mixture into an alcoholic beverage or what is traditionally called ginger beer. The alcohol content when produced by the traditional process can be as high as up to 11%. The beverage produced industrially today and called ginger beer is often not brewed or fermented. Such ginger beer is carbonated with pressurized carbon dioxide, does not contain alcohol, and is sold as a soft drink. Ginger beer is similar to ginger ale except that it has a significantly stronger ginger taste. If by the term and name ginger beer one means the beverage with is traditionally made through the process of fermentation and has even an iota of alcohol content, then without an iota of a doubt, such ginger beer would be an intoxicant and it would be absolutely unlawful and prohibited for the believers to consume it. Allah and His Messenger (saws) have declared the consumption of any type of intoxicants as absolutely and categorically unlawful for the believers. Your Statement: .we were at 5 star hotel to dine with friends, my friend told me almost in all the 5 star restaurants while cooking they add wine, rum etc . (it burns out while cooking ) they add in cakes, japanese / italian cuisines The statement of your friend that almost all five-star restaurants add alcohol while cooking is obviously untrue and inaccurate, but there is a possibility that some types of food in such restaurants sometimes do indeed include alcohol amongst their ingredients. If one is at such a restaurant where one fears that even an iota of alcohol has been added to their food, they should confirm with the chef or the restaurant manager before they consume the food, if indeed they fear Allah and the Last Day. Your Question:........ we are in a muslim country how can they do that. there were many muslims there having the dinner. what should we do? we are not sure Respected sister in Islam, it is indeed unfortunate that in the times we live in, the majority of muslim nations allow the sale and consumption of alcohol in their jurisdiction.and that is something the rulers or lawmakers of these land will have to account for in the Presence of their Lord Most High on that Inevitable and Tumultuous Day of Judgment! Your Question: what should we do? Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 64 Surah Tagabhun verse 16: 16 So fear Allah as much as ye can; listen and obey. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 5083 Narrated by Abu Dharr Allah's Messenger (saws) said to him, "Fear Allah wherever you are. Answer: Alcohol based creams medicine In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. Your Question: These all creams contains Alcohol in them. My question is, do this creams using is also Forbidden or Haram in ISLAM? Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 90:

O you who have believed!

Khamr (all types of intoxicants), gambling,

(ungodly) shrines, and divining devices are all abominable works of Shaitaan; therefore, refrain from these so that you may attain true success!

Allah and His Messenger (saws) have categorically forbidden and declared as haraam the consumption of intoxicants for the believers.

Not all haraam or forbidden things are impure for example: gold and silk are declared haraam for the believing men, but they are not impure. Similarly, most of the scholars of Islam are of the opinion that although the consumption of alcohol is absolutely forbidden and haraam, alcohol by itself is not an inherently impure substance. Thus there is no harm if one uses products that contain alcohol like perfumes, creams, soaps, shampoos, etc. provided the alcohol is not consumed and entered into the body which would cause one to loose ones senses. And Allah Alone Knows Best. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Answer: Forgiveness for past sins In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Whatever deeds one might have done in ones past, if one turns to Allah Subhanah in sincere Taubah and seeks forgiveness, Allah Subhanah has promised in the Holy Quran that He will forgive all the sins of such a believer, even if one has committed the gravest sin of all: Shirk! Not only that, our Lord is so Merciful and Generous, that He not only will forgive the sins of the believer, He will change his evil deeds done into good deeds! Verily if any of you did evil in

ignorance, and thereafter repented and amended (his conduct), Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Lo! He is Oft-

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2357 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "He who repents of a sin is like him who has committed no sin." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2338 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Allah accepts a servant's repentance (taubah) till he gives up his spirit in death." Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Drunken Swedish soldiers charged for ambushing group of campers

Published: 6 May 11 08:04 CET | Double click on a word to get a translation Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33614/20110506/ Share Three drunken and uniformed members of Sweden's National Home Guard (Hemvrnet) have been charged for attacking a group of campers in the forests of eastern Sweden, south of Stockholm.

The national guardsmen threw firecrackers at the campers' tent, poured dirt in their campfire and shouted racial slurs at the campers. "Bastard Afghans, bastard Iranians, go home!" screamed one of the soldiers, according to the local Eskilstuna-Kuriren newspaper. The attack, which took place in the summer of 2009 between a platoon of national guard troops and seven campers, stemmed from a dispute over which group should be allowed to sleep in a shelter along the Srmlandsleden hiking trail. Following the initial disagreement, the soldiers decided to exact their revenge by returning to the campsite in their canoes under the cover of darkness in an attempt to intimidate the unsuspecting campers. Under questioning following the incident, the soldiers admitted they were intoxicated and in uniform when the carried out their ambush on the unsuspecting campers. Three of the men in the Home Guard platoon have now been charged with assault, according to the paper. Despite the charges, the Swedish Armed Forces have no plans to discipline the soldiers any further. Sweden's National Home Guard is a part of the Army, serving as part of the country's national territorial defence. The volunteer Home Guard troops undergo three months of basic training, after which they are expected to train an additional 20 hours per year.

The primary role of the Home Guard to protect vital infrastructure against attack or sabotage, as well as assist in case of civilian disasters. According to the Armed Forces website, there are currently around 30,000 active Home Guard soldiers in Sweden. External link: National Home Guard website http://www.thelocal.se/33614/20110506/

Alcoholism linked to family drinking: study

Published: 17 May 11 11:21 CET | Double click on a word to get a translation Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33818/20110517/ Share5 Having a relative with an alcohol problem increases the risk of an individual developing alcoholism, a new Swedish study published on Tuesday has shown.

Swedish alcoholism drug awaits human study (14 Feb 11) Young men at greater risk for alcohol dependence (7 Sep 09) Swedish researchers uncover addiction's genetic roots (24 Sep 08)

We dont know exactly why, but having a relative with a certain type of alcoholism increased the risk of developing these problems with up to 50 percent, Anna Sderpalm Gordh of Gothenburg University told The Local. There are two types of alcoholism, type I and type II. Scientists have previously found that sufferers from type I alcoholism may have had a hereditary trait but the onset of the addiction has to a large extent been triggered by external factors, such as habits of ones social circle or the onset of a crisis. In type II alcoholism there is a significant genetic risk that the person will develop a drinking problem, regardless of external influences. In the new Swedish study, scientists gave 51 participants, of which 29 were a control group and 22 were relatives of type I alcoholics, a small amount of alcohol or placebo and asked them to report back how it made them feel. The results showed that those with a relative with type I alcoholism reported back more positive effects after drinking the alcohol than those from the control group. These also said they wanted a second drink to a higher degree than the others. The results show that some of us are more sensitive to the rewarding effects of alcohol. It also indicates that relatives to people who have type I alcoholism have a hereditary inclination to become addicted to alcohol and could be at a higher risk from developing alcoholism, Sderpalm Gordh said. According to Sderpalm Gordh these results are important because it is a definite step towards the ability to identify markers for groups that may carry an inherent risk of developing alcohol problems in the future. In Sweden almost 40 percent of the population has a relative with a drinking problem, according to Sderpalm Gordh. Armed with these new results it is important that those who

know they may be in a risk group are aware of their drinking habits. I think that if you know that you are in a risk group and perhaps are going through a crisis it is potentially vital to keep within the limits of recommended weekly units, she told The Local. The study will be published in medical journal Alcohol: Clinical & Experimental Research (ACER) and is the first that investigates a group of people that are relatives of type I alcoholics. The drug influences the brain's dopamine reward system, which is activated by alcohol, and has demonstrated positive results in experiments on rats. "We really believe in the concept. It can have a positive effect because it has clearly proved so in results in experiments on animals," Helga Hifdt Lid, who successfully defended the research last week, told The Local on Monday.

Eighty-five percent of the rats in the study demonstrated positive results from using the drug. Current drugs to fight alcoholism only work on a minority of patients. Hifd Lid was awarded a PhD in neuropharmacology following her defence. She is anxious to have the drug tested on humans. While the school had previously begun a clinical study on humans, it was suspended. "A clinical study with our partners was under way. Unfortunately, during the process, they were acquired by a major pharmaceutical company and it led to several clinical trials being shut down, including this study," said Hifdt Lid. However, she is confident that funding will be found to resume the study later this year. "The preclinical findings were remarkable, incomparable to other substances screened for alcoholic intake reducing agents and superior to anything else I've ever seen. It has great potential in humans," she said. "The safety profile is okay. It has already been tested in man for schizophrenia to good effect. There are no reports of serious side effects, no abuse risk for these compounds, it's all about getting a clinical trial up and running," she added. Hifdt Lid has researched determining glycine levels for five years as part of her PhD research in conjunction with broader studies in the field The human study was a multi-centre undertaking involving alcoholics in Europe and Australia. When it was suspended late last year, 150 patients were enrolled, with more to follow. It had already been under way for six months, the expected duration of participation for each subject, but patients enrolled at different times. Several clinical studies were closed immediately before the results were analysed following the takeover due to financial reasons, according to Hifdt Lid. The number of alcohol-related injuries has also increased, reports Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper. We are seeing several extremely troublesome developments, said FHI's Nils Stenstrm, who was the main author of the forthcoming report on drug prevention that is to be submitted to the Swedish government. Among women aged 25-29, the number at risk increased from six to eight percent. Only among women in the 20-24 age group was there a decrease, from 10 to 8 percent. In the population as a whole, seven percent had risky alcohol consumption habits, according to statistics from 2008. Acute alcohol-related injuries such as alcohol poisoning, abuse, and drunk driving have also increased. TT/The Local (news@thelocal.se/08 656 6518) http://www.thelocal.se/21918/20090907/

It feels exciting and totally new, said Elisabeth Jerlhag, one of the researchers from the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the University of Gothenburgs Sahlgrenska Academy, to the Gteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper. The hormone ghrelin, found primarily in the stomach as well as the brain, is well-known for its role in controlling peoples appetites. Previous research on ghrelin has focused on its role in dietary-related diseases such diabetes and obesity. But the Gothenburg teams research points to a broader role for the hormone when it comes to the reward systems in peoples brains associated with various types of addiction. After reviewing previous studies which indicated that alcoholics were found to have higher levels of ghrelin in their blood, Jerlhag and the rest of the team led by Professor Jrgen Engel then examined the genes of 417 people, 138 of whom had sought medical treatment for high alcohol consumption. We found variations in the gene for ghrelin which had a strong connection both with high alcohol intake and with obesity, said Sara Landgren, another researcher in the group, to GP. The team also found similarities between those suffering from both obesity and alcoholism which indicate that people with a certain variation of the ghrelin gene are more vulnerable to addiction. The results have led to further research on ghrelins role in other forms of addiction in animals, but the results of the new research have been embargoed pending their publication in a scientific journal. Additional research is being carried out on Swedish women with alcohol problems, and plans are underway to examine the hormones affects on other types of drug addiction. The idea is to develop a drug which can affect the ghrelin system, Jerlhag told the newspaper, adding that she and two other researchers have already submitted patent applications. Crime falls when Sweden 'drinks like Europe'

"Continental" drinking habits among Swedes have had a positive impact on violent crime levels, despite rising alcohol consumption, according to a report on Tuesday. Teen alcohol programme has 'no effect': study (24 Oct 11) Google snaps suspected illegal booze deal (20 Oct 11)

Queen under fire for giving kids wine (17 Oct 11) We have changed from a 'spirit culture' to more of a 'beer-and-wine culture'. We have made our alcohol consumption more 'continental', said criminologist Sven Granath, from the National Council of Crime Prevention (Brottsfrebygganderdet,Br) to the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily. The connection between drinking and violent crime has always been strong in Sweden, according to Granath. During the period when Swedes have been more prone to heavy drinking, levels of violent crime have risen accordingly. Swedes drank rather a lot during the first half of the 19th century. And during the same time, more people per capita were killed through violent crime, Granath told the paper. During the second half of the century the state started regulating alcohol consumption of the population by outlawing home distilling and establishing controlled outlets for alcohol sale. According to Granath, these measures led to a decrease in both murders and manslaughter in Sweden. But in more modern times, the connection between alcohol and violent crime has weakened, according to Granath. In the 1980s the number of incidents of alcohol-related murder and manslaughter levelled out without consumption changing much, while consumption increased in the 1990s at the same time as violent crimes decreased. One of the reasons for this development is the change in Swedish drinking habits to a more continental style of drinking, according to Granath. Swedes are more likely to have a drink every day than binge-drinking on the weekend. However, there is no denying that there is a strong connection between alcohol consumption and crime and that both perpetrators and victims are often heavily intoxicated, said Granath. If you look at statistics of murder and manslaughter, close to 50 percent of both victims and offenders are very drunk at the time of the offence, Granath told the paper. A doctor in Malm in southern Sweden has been fired after punching and refusing to treat a female patient he thought was drunk. The matter has also been reported to police. The female patient came to the emergency room of the Skne University Hospital in Malm complaining of severe abdominal pain. It is alleged that the doctor refused to help the woman, telling her that she was drunk and then refusing to speak with her. According to the woman's complaint, the doctor then hit the woman on each leg and in the stomach several times, wrote the Sydsvenskan newspaper. The womans mother came to the hospital, where her daughter immediately complained: the doctor has hit me, the doctor has hit me, according to the paper. Then, upon the mothers request, the doctor made a second examination of the woman, and claimed that there is no need to rip her up needlessly. The event, which occurred three months ago, is now under police investigation.

Staff members of the hospital explained that the police investigation was delayed as there was a preliminary and timely internal investigation that took place first. I dont want to comment on what the doctor said to us as I would not want to pre-empt the investigation, said Lisbeth Hedenius, an employee of the Skne hospital, to Sydsvenskan. The doctor has contested the dismissal and contacted his union, according to the TT news agency. Jens Bernow, chairman of Malms Medical Assosciation (SknskaLkarfrening) also refused to comment. I dont want to comment on the doctors aptitude, the investigations will show whether he has done anything [wrong], he told the paper.
