The Cracker - The Non-Explosive Cracking Agent for Universal Application

The Cracker is a non-explosive cracking agent which enables standard demolition to be carried out with comparative accuracy, without the need for special preconditions or equipment. The Cracker is supplied in powder form and is sealed in handy plastic containers. The Cracker must be mixed with a specific quantity of water. This mixture is then filled into the holes which are predrilled in the material to be cracked. The ideal drill hole diameter is maximum 1 1/4 in hot weather (above 72 F) and maximum 1 1/2 below 72 F. After a few hours reaction time, The Cracker develops an extremely high expansion pressure which quickly increases to such an extent that any hard stone or reinforced concrete is broken. Compared with a number of other conventional methods of demolition, The Cracker is virtually noiseless and free from vibration. It is, moreover, ECOLOGICALLY BENEFICIAL. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

THE CRACKER Is filled into vertically drilled holes When mixed, the material is liquid Maximum development of expansion pressure (12,000 psi) Only one product for all temperatures between 32F and 100F No storage problems / minimum one year shelf life Easy to use Universal demolition application Sold in 5 kilogram (11 lb.) and 2.5 kilogram (5.5 lb) heavy-duty plastic containers
The Cracker may be used indoors as well as outdoors. The Cracker can be used in dry or humid surroundings and underwater. Above all, The Cracker is used in places where other methods of demolition cannot be accommodated.

PRINCIPLES OF USE FOR THE CRACKER

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Protective goggles Five (5) gallon plastic bucket (for mixing The Cracker) Bucket for water Water supply (cool & clean; ice will be required in warm environments) Measuring cup (calibrated) Rubber gloves Jiffy mixer attachment for 1/2 electric drill (no hand mixing) Packing rod

WATER
Two critical factors in using The Cracker is the amount and temperature of the mixing water. Water must be added in the proper amount according to the temperature of the material being broken. Directions will advise 1 liter (33 oz.) or 1.16 liter (38 1/2 oz) per 5 kg (11 1b.) container, depending on the temperature. Addition of too much water can cause a blow-out. Refer to temperature chart for proper water temperature. When ambient temperature and concrete or rock temperature is 73F or above, it may be necessary to ice the mixing water. This is to prevent overly rapid reaction. In cold weather, mixing water may be slightly warmed to speed up the reaction and facilitate cracking. Refer to the temperature chart for correct temperatures.

FREE EDGE / OPEN FACE

Just as with blasting, The Cracker must have an area of least resistance toward which it can break. At least two edges are required. If you are in bedrock or removing part of a slab without free edges, an open face can be created by opening a small area with The Cracker to provide relief.

HOLE DIAMETER
Hole diameter is as crucial to safety and breaking stress as the correct use of mixing water. The temperature of the material to be broken is the determining factor for hole size. Holes that are too small (less than 1 1/4) can cause too much restriction and product failure. Holes of too large diameter can be dangerous to your personnel. 1. When the temperature of concrete or rock is over 73F, hole diameter should not be greater than 1 1/4 (see temperature chart, pages 8 and 9.
Adhesives Technology Corp. I 450 E. Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064 I Tel: 800-892-1880 I www.atc.ws

-5-

PRINCIPLES OF USE OF THE CRACKER

HOLD DIAMETER (Contd)
2. When the temperature of concrete or rock is below 73F, 1 1/2 hole diameter is optimum for expansive stress. Smaller holes will decrease effectiveness. 3. FOR SAFETY, HOLE DIAMETERS SHOULD BE BETWEEN 1 1/4 AND 1 1/2 DEPENDING ON TEMPERATURE - ALWAYS REFER TO TEMPERATURE CHART.

HOLE DEPTH
The hole depth should be 85% - 90% of the depth to be broken in reinforced concrete or hard rock. This percentage will give you maximum production. Do not ever drill all the way through the material to be broken. The Cracker will simply run out of the hole. The Cracker is not recommended for slabs of less than six (6) inches, as hole depth must be at least five (5) times the diameter in order for The Cracker to remain in the hole and achieve breaking stress. Holes that are too shallow can create a blow-out. 1. Hole depth should be at least five (5) times the diameter of the hole. 2. If drilling in shallow material, it may be necessary to decrease the hole diameter in order to achieve breaking depth. 3. Do not drill all the way through concrete or rock. 4. Maximum hole depth when using The Cracker is ten (10) feet. If breaking deep foundations or high wall or rock formations, lifts are recommended. 5. It is permissible to cast holes with PVC pipe in concrete being poured which will have to be broken later. However, it is recommended that 1 1/2 OD pipe be used and removed. If pipe is left in the concrete, do not leave pipe protruding above concrete surface. If filled above surface with The Cracker, a blow-out can occur. Also, be sure that pipe is not extremely hot if sitting in the sun.

HOLE SPACING
Hole spacing is often a matter of testing the material to be broken if tensile strength of rock or reinforcing is unknown. As a general rule, hole spacing can be on 12 centers in reinforced concrete or hard rock. However, in rock of extremely high tensile strength (above 5,000 psi) or greater reinforcement on 6 centers, holes should be placed on 6-8 centers. In light or nonreinforced concrete or rock of low strength, holes can be placed on centers ranging from 15 - 14. Particularly in rock, it is always helpful to do some test holes in order to save time and material.

Adhesives Technology Corp. I 450 E. Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064 I Tel: 800-892-1880 I www.atc.ws

-6-

PRINCIPLES OF USE OF THE CRACKER

HOLE SPACING (Contd)
1. If drilling in rock of very low strength, never space holes at a distance less than the hole depth. 2. In very warm environments, hole spacing can usually be increased. Unless concrete is heavily reinforced or rock is extremely strong, 12 - 18 should be minimum spacing.

HOLE PATTERN
Hole pattern is determined by the material to be broken (strength or reinforcement) and by the size blocks or configuration which the object is to be broken.

HOLES
Holes must be clean (drilling dust blown out) and dry.

CONSUMPTION OF THE CRACKER / ESTIMATING QUANTITY REQUIRED:

1. Temperature of the concrete or rock to be broken will determine hole size (1 1/4 or 1 1/2). 2. Size pieces into which you wish to break will determine hole pattern. 3. Each container (5 kg - 11 lbs.) will fill 7 1/2 linear feet of 1 1/2 holes, 9 feet of 1 3/8 holes, and 10 feet of 1 1/4 holes. 4. Hard rock or reinforced concrete requires anywhere from one to three containers per cubic yard, depending on the size into which it will be broken. 5. Boulders often require less than one container per cubic yard - production can be up to 4 cubic yards per container, depending on the size into which the boulder will be broken. 6. Formulas for calculating quantities follows: For 1 1/2 holds: number of holes x depth of holes in feet divided by 7.5 = # of 5 kg For 1 3/8 holes: number of holes x depth of holes in feet divided by 9.0 = # of 5 kg For 1 1/4 holes: number of holes x depth of holes in feet divided by 10 = # of 5 kg

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE CRACKER

READ THIS PAGE AND ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THE CRACKER
It is imperative that all users of The Cracker must adhere to all guidelines, as the manufacturer and distributor of The Cracker assume no responsibility otherwise.
The Cracker is a technical product. As such, it must be used precisely according to instructions. If these instructions are followed exactly, The Cracker will produce excellent results as a demolition agent. If The Cracker is not mixed and installed according to directions, two things can occur. One is failure of the product to perform as required. The second is a potential for what is known as a blow-out, where the product expands upwards out of the hole, rather than developing lateral expansion for cracking. If there is a failure to mix and install The Cracker correctly, the user is risking a chance of injury. When a blow-out occurs, hot, dry power shoots upward out of the hole. It will make a loud noise. If some initial cracking has taken place, there is the potential for concrete or rock fragments to fly up as well. Standing over a hole looking down, without safety glasses, could result in serious eye injuries or burns. Do not consider plugging the holes or placing a rock or some heavy object on top of the hole. This only creates the possibility of flying objects. Risk of blow-out increases at higher temperatures which can cause The Cracker to react too rapidly. At any temperature, it is recommended that holes be covered, preferably with a wet cloth. Safety goggles must be worn at all times when using The Cracker. As stated above, The Cracker is an excellent product. It affords the user with demolition capabilities in areas that are otherwise inaccessible. The Cracker offers quiet and safe cracking of concrete or rocks where blasting is not permitted or where heavy equipment, noise and vibration cannot be accommodated. It is, however, a technical and sophisticated product. Therefore, it must be handled accordingly. Adherence to the instructions is a must.

REMEMBER AT ALL TIMES: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES WHEN USING THE CRACKER THE CRACKER IS AN IRRITANT TO EYES AND SKIN

SOME ACTIONS WHICH CAN CAUSE A BLOW-OUT

(Product coming out of hole - particularly in warm weather)
1. Use of water that is too warm (see temperature chart & mixing instructions). 2. Use of too little water (see temperature chart & mixing instructions). 3. Waiting too long to install after beginning to mix (never more than 5 minutes in warm weather). 4. Holes of too large diameter (see temperature chart - never over 1 1/2 inches). 5. Holes that are too shallow (must be at least 5 times the hole diameter). 6. Hole spacing which is too close in hot weather. 7. Dust in the holes (which absorbs water). 8. Installation of The Cracker in the hottest part of the day in warm weather, when concrete or rock is heated and the sun will be directly on it. 9. Allowing a container of The Cracker to become super-heated (standing in sun or in hot vehicle) prior to usage. Keep The Cracker as cool as possible.

Some Actions Which Can Cause Product Failure:

1. Use in extreme cold (temperature below 32 F). 2. Use of too much water (see temperature chart & mixing instructions). 3. Allowing moisture into or contamination of the stored product. 4. Water, dust or other material in holes. 5. Holes of too small diameter (less than 1 1/4). 6. Hole spacing too great in hard rock or heavily reinforced concrete. 7. Use of The Cracker without free edges or an open face toward which it can break.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Read the Technical Manual carefully prior to use. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION. The jobsite should be closed to the public and cleared of personnel after installation of The Cracker. Wear rubber gloves. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. The Cracker contains unhydrated lime. Upon contact, flush liberally with cool water. Do not drill holes larger than maximum 1 1/4 in warm weather (concrete or rock temperature 72F or above) or maximum 1 1/2 in cool weather. Pour The Cracker into pre-drilled holes immediately upon mixing. Time lapsed from beginning of mix to installation should not exceed five (5) minutes. Do not look directly into the filled holes after installation. Be aware of the ambient temperature and the temperature of the concrete or rock and mixing water. Use the CHART FOR CORRECT USE OF THE CRACKER IN VARYING TEMPERATURES and follow all instructions. Do not fill glass or metal containers which widen toward the bottom with The Cracker. When left in a large container, very high temperature develops and expansion ensues. Cover the drill holes if temperatures are high or personnel remain in the area. It is wise to cover holes with wet cloth at any time. Do not attempt to pump The Cracker into holes under any circumstances. If hole temperatures exceed the safe range, they can be cooled with ice water and then blown out with compressed air. Do not attempt to plug holes or place heavy objects over holes for safety reasons. Do not use a funnel or other objects when installing The Cracker. The Cracker should not be used in coal mines or other areas with potential for ignition of gases as temperatures of the mixed product can turn very hot for a short period during the hydration process. THE CRACKER SHOULD ALWAYS BE KEPT OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USAGE & MIXING THE CRACKER

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Read this manual and any other instructions provided thoroughly before attempting to use The Cracker. Adhere to all safety precautions. All personnel should wear safety goggles at all times. Clear site of non-essential personnel. Use a thermometer to determine temperature of rock to be broken. Consult the temperature chart, for correct hole size, amount & temperature of mixing water, time of installation and other recommended procedures specific to the temperature of the material to be broken. Pre-drill holes at 1 1/4, 1 3/8 or 1 1/2 diameter according to temperature (do not deviate from recommend diameter). a. Depth should be 85% - 90% of area to be broken (a minimum of five (5) times the hole diameter and a maximum of 10). b. Blow drilling dust from holes and remove any water. c. Hole spacing and pattern is determined by structure and sizes into which it will be broken. d. Allow holes to cool from friction of drilling. 7. 8. 9. 10. Assemble all mixing and safety equipment, water and ice (if necessary). Pour The Cracker into plastic mixing bucket. The Cracker should be kept as cool as possible prior to mixing it in warm weather. Prepare mixing water by icing (or warming if extremely cold) to correct temperature specified in the temperature chart. Measure correct amount of water according to temperature chart: a. When concrete or rock is below 73F, use one liter (33 oz) water per 5 kg container. Do not add extra water. At first, The Cracker will appear to be too dry, but will liquefy itself as mixing proceeds. Excess water will slow or stop reaction. b. When concrete or rock is 73 - 84, use 1.16 liters (38.5 oz) water per 5 kg container. The additional water reduces the chances of a blow-out). c. When concrete is 85F or above, also use 1.16 liters (38.5 oz) per 5 kg container. The additional water is essential in hot environment for safety reasons and to reduce chances of a blow-out.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USAGE & MIXING THE CRACKER

11. 12. Pour proper amount of water into bucket with The Cracker. Begin mixing The Cracker and water with a jiffy-mixer attachment in a 1/2 electric or pneumatic drill. a. Using a mixing attachment is far superior to hand mixing, as it allows rapid mixing and installation of The Cracker (well within advised 5 minute limit) and provide more effective blending of the product. b. Hand mixing is not recommended as it can take too much time to achieve the correct consistency, thereby increasing the danger of a blow-out. c. Mix only until a smooth, pourable liquid consistency develops (almost no lumps). d. If over mixed or allowed to stand in the bucket, The Cracker will thicken and begin to react. 13. Pour the mixed Cracker directly from bucket into clean, pre-drilled holes immediately upon achieving a smooth liquid consistency. (TIME ELAPSED SHOULD NOT EXCEED FIVE (5) MINUTES FROM BEGINNING TO MIX). Do not use any type of funneling device. Start filling at out holes (or holes nearest free edges or open face) and work into center or away from free areas. a. Fill holes to top. b. Do not pour freshly mixed Cracker into holes partially filled from a previous batch. c. Do not plug holes or place heavy objects on top of hole. 15. Cover holes with wet cloth if personnel will remain in the area, or if holes are exposed to sunlight in high temperatures. Personnel should avoid looking down at the holes. If unused material remains in the bucket, it may be poured onto the ground (non-hazardous) or diluted with a large amount of cool water.

14.

16. 17.

SAFETY NOTE: If The Cracker begins to steam in the bucket at any time, immediately add at least 1/2 gallon of water to stop the reaction. In case of eyes or skin getting in contact with The Cracker in powder form or liquid, during mixing or possible blow-out, immediately wash and rinse with plenty of water.

USE OF THE CRACKER UNDERWATER OR IN THE EVENT OF WATER IN THE HOLES

The Cracker can be used in an underwater environment. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine if The Cracker presented any danger to aquatic life when used underwater. With a buffer of 10 cubic meters of water (stagnant or flowing) per every 3.5 kgs of The Cracker, there is no appreciable change in PH value. Therefore, The Cracker was not found to be harmful to underwater life if the stated ratio of The Cracker is maintained. If it is necessary to perform demolition underwater, or if there is rain or seepage of water into holes prepared for the use of The Cracker, the situation can be handled as follows: MATERIAL REQUIRED: 1. Use thin wall polyethylene hose of slightly larger diameter than the hole to be filled. (This may often be obtained from blasting supplier.) Plastic or metal tube of a diameter smaller than the hole to be filled. Funnel (for restricted application only). All usual materials for mixing The Cracker.

2. 3. 4.

DIRECTIONS: 1. 2. 3. Tie knot in one end of polyethylene hose. Place metal or plastic tube into the polyethylene hose. Insert both together into the hole in submerged concrete or rock (tied end of polyethylene hose goes in first). Place funnel into top of metal tube. When hole is sufficiently filled, slowly twist tube as it is removed from hose and hole. Leave polyethylene hose above water(if depth permits) without tying out end, or if necessary, tie off the hose at a distance of two (2) feet above the opening of the surface of the hole. After each single hole filling, immediately clean funnel and tube!!!

HOLE LOCATION, DIRECTING CRACKS

An individual drill hole or evenly scattered drill holes produce a random crack development.

Neighboring drill holes inevitably promote a crack along the axis of the drill holes.

Omitting to fill a corner drill hole relieves the tension in two (2) main crack lines thereby enabling them to combine in a curve.

CRACKING ROCKS
2 1 a a 2

Depth max. 1.80 m

In the case of rocks without free access from the side it is necessary to crack an opening which provides access. The drill holes (1) of the opening are filled with The Cracker and then, at one hour intervals, the drills holes (2) are filled, one row after the other.

In the case of rock formation it is first necessary to fill the holes at the foot of the formation, i.e., the foot holes, with The Cracker (a1). It is advantageous to drill these closer together than the actual demolition holes (a2). Here too, each row of holes must be filled at intervals with The Cracker, i.e., one row after the other. 30 cm underdrill

COMPARISON OF THE VARIOUS METHODS OF DEMOLITION

It is not a simple matter to compare the various methods of demolition. The decisive factors for an assessment are probably the kinds of material to be demolished and the technical and legal prerequisites which have to be taken into consideration in each case. The table below establishes without obligations that in comparison with other methods of demolition The Cracker performs on the whole extremely well.
