ONEWORLDTRADECENTER ARCHITECTURALFACTSHEET AsthefirstofficetowertoriseontheWorldTradeCentersite,One WorldTradeCenterrecapturestheNewYorkskyline,reasserts downtownManhattanspreeminenceasabusinesscenterand establishesanewciviciconforthecountry.Itisamemorable architecturallandmarkforthecityandthenationabuildingwhose simplicityandclarityofformwillremainfreshandtimeless.Extending thelongtraditionofAmericaningenuityinhighriseconstruction,the designsolutionisaninnovativemixofarchitecture,structure,urban design,safetyandsustainability. OneWTCisaboldiconintheskythatacknowledgestheadjacent memorial.Whilethememorial,carvedoutoftheearth,speaksofthe pastandofremembrance,OneWTCspeaksaboutthefutureand hopeasitrisesintotheskyinafaceted,crystallineformfilledwith, andreflecting,light.Thistowerevokestheslender,taperingtriangular formsofgreatNewYorkCityiconssuchastheChryslerBuildingand EmpireStateBuildingandreplacesalmostonequarteroftheoffice spacelostonSeptember11,2001.(Overall,downtownlost approximately11millionsquarefeetofofficespaceonSeptember 11th,withtenmillionsquarefeetlostattheWorldTradeCenter proper.) Asthetowerrisesfromthiscubicbase,itssquareedgesare chamferedback,transformingthesquareintoeighttallisosceles trianglesinelevation.Atitsmiddle,thetowerformsaperfectoctagon inplanandthenculminatesinaglassparapetwhoseplanisasquare, rotated45degreesfromthebase.Itsoveralleffectisthatofa crystallineformthatcapturesaneverevolvingdisplayofrefracted light:asthesunmovesthroughtheskyorwemovearoundthetower, thesurfacesappearlikeakaleidoscope,andwillchangethroughout thedayaslightandweatherconditionschange. Safety Thebuildingincorporatesadvancedlifesafetysystemsthatexceedthe requirementsoftheNewYorkCityBuildingCodeandwillleadtheway indevelopingnewhighrisebuildingstandards.Inadditionto structuralredundancyandcementitiousfireproofingthatisdenseand highlyadhesive,thebuildingincludesbiologicalandchemicalfiltersin theairsupplysystem.Toallowforoptimumegressandfirefighting capacity,extrawidepressurizedstairs,multiplebackupsystemsfor emergencylighting,andconcreteprotectionforallsprinklersand emergencyrisersarebeingprovided,inadditiontointerconnected

Design

redundantexits,additionalstairexitlocationsatalladjacentstreets, anddirectexitstothestreetfromtowerstairs.Allofthebuildingslife safetysystemsegressstairs,communicationantennae,exhaustand ventilationshafts,electricalrisers,standpipes,andelevatorsare encasedinathreefootthickconcretecore. Thisbuildingisbeingdesignedtofacilitateemergencyresponsewith enhancedcommunicationsystems,togetherwithadedicatedstairfor usebyfirefighters.Theseareusedinconjunctionwithenhanced elevators,housedinaprotectedcentralbuildingcore,thatserveevery floorofthebuilding.Inaddition,protectedtenantcollectionpointsare locatedoneachfloor. Tosatisfysecurityconcerns,thebuildingssetbackdistancefromWest Street(Route9a)wasincreasedfrom25feettoanaverageof90feet inJune2005. SustainableDesign OneWTCusesnewtechnologiestomaximizeefficiency,minimize wasteandpollution,andreducetheimpactofitsdevelopment.The buildingsdesignincorporatesstrategiesforwaterandenergy conservationthatgowellbeyondtherequirementsestablishedbythe WorldTradeCenterSustainableDesignGuidelines. OneWTCwilluse30percentlesswaterthantheNewYorkCity BuildingCodeallowsforthistypeofbuilding.Asystemforcollecting 100percentoftherainwaterthatfallswithinthesiteboundariesis beingputinplace;thisreclaimedwaterwillbeusedforlandscape irrigationandtofilltheplazapool.A1.2megawatt,nextgeneration fuelcellplantoneofthelargestcommercialfuelcellinstallationsin thecountryisintegratedintothebuildingsmechanicalandelectrical systemsandcontributestoenergyusethatis20percentlessthan proposedunderthecitybuildingcode.OneWTCusesanewformof highperformance,lowEglasscoatingtechnologytomaximize daylightingandminimizeheatgain.Maximizingtheamountof naturallightusedinthebuildingcontributestoenergysavingsby reducingtheneedforartificiallighting. Location FromitssiteadjacenttotheWorldTradeCenterMemorial,OneWTC rises1776feettomarkitsimportantplaceintheNewYorkCity skyline.Thebuildingislocatedonthenorthwestcornerofthe16acre WorldTradeCentersite,onlandclaimedfromtheHudsonRiverover twocenturiesofdevelopmentinManhattan.Thesite,severalblocks eastoftheriverandintheheartofthefinancialdistrict,will ultimatelyhousemorethan10millionsquarefeetofcommercial developmentinfivetowers. OneWTCisapubliclyownedcommercialbuildingwith2.6million squarefeetofofficespace,anobservationdeck,aworldclass restaurantandbroadcastandantennafacilities.Thebelowgrade concoursesincludeapproximately55,000squarefeetofretailspace andconnecttoanextensivetransportationandretailnetworkthat includes13subwaylines,PATHcommutertrainstoNewJersey,and possiblefuturetrainconnectionstoLongIslandandtheairports

Program

Theprogramisorganizedasfollows:Risingfromtheplazalevel,a50 foothighpubliclobbyistoppedbyaseriesofmechanicalfloors; togethertheseformthe185foothighbuildingbase.Seventyone officefloors(floors2090)riseabovethebasetoanelevationof 1131feet.Mechanicalfloors,arestaurantandatwolevel observationdeckculminateinametalandglassparapetthatmarks 1362feetand1368feetthetwoheightsoftheoriginalTwinTowers. Acommunicationsplatformringrisesabovetheparapetanda408 foot,cablestayedantenna,designedincollaborationwithartist KennethSnelsonandstructuralengineerHansSchoberofSchlaich BergermannandPartner,crownstheproject. Antenna Theantennaconsistsoftwomajorcomponents:a408footmastand acommunicationsplatformring.Themastisahybridstructure, consistingofasteeltowersupportingtheantennaandaspecial protectiveenclosure,calledaradome,thatistransparenttoradio waves.Thesteeltowerhaseightsectionsstackedverticallyand decreasinginwidth,whiletheradomeenclosureisformedofa modular,fiberglasscompositesandwichpanelsystemarrangedas octagonalantiprismmodules.Thisfoldedplateenclosurestructureis thefirstofitskindtobeusedinantennaconstruction.Thepanels worknotonlyassimpleplatesinbending,asisthecaseformost cladding,butthefoldedplatestructureexploitsthespatialgeometry andstiffenstheensembletoresistwindloading.Thegeometryofthe radomeshellisbasedonarepeatingmodularsystemthatallowsfor easyreplacementanderectionandalsocreatesaprotected maintenanceareathatisuniqueintheantennaindustry.Largehelical channels,calledstrakes,arebuiltintothegeometryoftheradome andwraparoundtheantennatodirectwindupandawayfromthe structure. Toaddmoresupportagainstwind,eightRF(radiofrequency) transparentKevlarguycablesareconnectedfromthemastbackto thering.Windowwashingequipmentisincorporatedintothe antennaringstructure.Becauseofitscircularshape,thisdesign makesitpossibletoservicethebuildingwithonlythreemaintenance units. Whenlitatnight,themastssurfacewillappearasafacetedsurface, whileabeaconatthetopwillsendoutahorizontallightbeamthat canbeseenfrommilesaway. Forthecurtainwall,architectsworkedwithindustryexpertsto developglassofanewmonumentalscalethatiscapableof withstandingthewindpressureofasupertallbuildingaswellas stringentsecurityrequirements.The5by134insulatedglasspanels spanthefull134floortofloorheightwithnointermediatemullion afirstinskyscraperconstruction.Theseglasspanelsallowfor maximumdaylightingandimpartmonumentalscaletotheproject. Theeightcornersofthebuildingarecladwithstainlesssteelpanels, witheachpanelspanningthefullheightofafloor.

CurtainWall

Base

Thetowerrisesfromapodiumwallbasewhosesquareplan200feet by200feetisthesamesizeasthefootprintsoftheoriginalTwin Towers.Thepodiumwallbaseis185feettallandconsistsof laminatedprismaticglassandweldedaluminumscreens.Itiscladin morethan2000piecesofprismaticglass;eachmeasures4feetby13 feet4incheswithvaryingprismaticprofiles.Thedesignutilizesthe opticalpropertiesofprismaticglasstoreflect,refractandtransmit lightinvariousspectrumstocreateadynamic,shimmeringglass surfacethatdrapesthetowersbase.Theprismaticglasswas developedoverthecourseoffouryearsinconjunctionwithsomeof theworldstopglassmanufacturers,whoworkedwiththearchitects toachievethedesiredvisualqualitiesandtoproducetheinnovative prismaticglass. Anarchitecturalconceptionallowsthebuildingtoflowoutintothe plazastocreateareasforpeopletogather,sit,relaxandreflect. Ribbonsofstainlesssteelcascadedownfrombehindtheprismatic glassfaadeofthebasetoformaseriesofstepterracesthatintegrate thehorizontalsurfacesoftheplazaintotheverticalsurfaceofthe building.Atnight,theribbonsareilluminatedfromwithintocreate continuousstripsoflight.Theterraces,madeoftexturedstainless steel,areshadedbyaringoftreesthatfurtherhumanizesthescaleof thespace.Theplazaisrichlytexturedwithsetsofsmallgranite cobblestones. Generousopenspacesarefilledwithtrees,water,andplacesof respiteforthetenantsandtheestimated3millionannualvisitors. Theseareasconnectthetowerwiththeadjacentneighborhoodsand allowviewsandaccessintothememorial.Glasswallsattheplaza edgesprovideprotectionfromthewind.Whileincorporating enhancedsecuritymeasures,thebuildingremainsopenand accessible.

Plaza

Lobbies

Entrancesonallfoursidesofthebuilding,each60feethighand ranginginwidthfrom30feetontheeastandwestsidesto50feeton thenorthsideand70feetonthesouth,activatethebuildingatstreet level.Theentrancesaredefinedbyglasscanopiesandlargeclearglass cablestayedwallsframedbymetalportals. Thewestportalprovidesentrancetoboththelobbyofthe observationdeckontheconcourselevelandthetransportation systems.Theeastportalprovidesaccessforofficetenantsand restaurantpatronswhowillascendtothetopofthebuilding.

Thewidernorthandsouthentrances,whichprovideaccessfor commercialofficetenants,aremarkedbyanarrayofdichroicglass panels.Thesepanels,composedofmultiplelayersofclear,etchedand dichroicglass,drawonthespectralqualitiesoflighttocreatevibrant colorpatternsacrossthesurfacesofthelobby.Thedesigndrawson theresultsofayearlongresearchprojectintotheopticaleffectsof dichroicglassintransmissionandreflection.

ConstructionProgress

Thegrandlobbyencirclesthecentralcoreandisfilledwithnatural lightthatentersthespacethroughtheeastandwestentrancesas wellasthroughaperturesinthenorthandsouthwalls.Carraramarble willbeusedtocladthelobbywalls. Constructionofthetowerisonpacetomeetitstargetcompletion datein2013.Belowgradesteelandconcreteworkiscomplete.The groundlevelslabsareinplaceforthemajorityofthestreetsand plazassurroundingthetower.Theeastandwestplazasnowsupport twoManitowoccrawlercranes,whichareworkingtoerectthe perimetersteelatthebaseofthetower.Thelargerofthesecranes hasan835tonliftingcapacity,makingitthelargestcraneeverusedin Manhattan.Withinthetower,anEFCOselfjackingliftsystemis constructingthemassivecorewalls. Fromthestreet,theformofthetowerisclearlyvisible.Completionof theframingatthebasewascompletedinearly2010.Sinceachieving thismilestone,constructionwillproceedontheofficelevelsabovethe baseatarapidpaceofapproximatelyonefloorperweek.Toppingout ofthesteelframeisscheduledforFall2011.
