A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The end of this month marks the two year point in my tenure as Director of this amazing Center. It is therefore once again time for a State of the Center Report, detailing all of the changes and accomplishments that our Center has seen in the last twelve months. Our Centers attendance is booming, with average daily numbers well above our contracted amount. Our online presence on Facebook and elderpedia.org continues to grow, as does our email list, which offers our monthly calendar and announcements to anyone interested. We administered over 100 flu and pneumonia vaccines at NO COST to seniors in our area. We distributed 200 farmers market nutrition checks to eligible clients. Moriah has really stepped up its commitment to senior health this year with its Wellness Project, funded in part by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Our August health fair was attended by over 120 people and our weekly pilates and Fit n Fun classes have been joined by our Friday morning yoga and our monthly therapeutic chair massages. We even had a Spanish language Silver Sneakers exercise class over the summer! Weekly blood pressure screenings are of course a staple of our health care programming. We have also increased our nutrition education programming this year and have added variety with healthy eating cooking demos by Isabella's Yum on the Road. We have once again secured a grant from the Neighborhood Fund, which allows us to bring our seniors high quality craft classes, including beading, sachet and soap making, on a regular basis. We continue to do wonderful things with the Monica Cohn Endowment funds. This year we hosted museum outreach, improv programs, a barbershop quartet and a Celtic music show, just to name a few. Stay tuned for more exciting and interesting music and art programs already in the works. We instituted a highly appreciated morning Game Hour this summer, which continues this fall. Our book club discussion group is garnering record numbers. We are currently reading our TENTH book and at our last meeting, attendees actually outnumbered available book copies! We took THREE off site trips this year! We went to Gracie Mansion, the Emma Lazarus Exhibit at The Museum of Jewish Heritage and enjoyed the hidden harbor boat cruise. We have begun incorporating more intergenerational activities into our programming with intergenerational bingo and exercise classes and hope to expand this venture in the coming year. Moriahs parties are becoming legendary, for their artful dcor and fabulous entertainment. The spirit at our recent Purim and July 4th parties could not be beat. Join us for our upcoming Succos Party, Thanksgiving Banquet and Chanukah Celebration. All these goals could never have been realized without the tireless efforts of our crackerjack office staff Chani Hilewitz and Rachel Zezon. They both have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make our seniors a priority both in and out of the Center. Im sure you join me in thanking them for their continuous efforts. In addition, I must thank the many members of our Center who have offered me their wise counsel and careful suggestions and supported me in all my endeavors. In addition, your generous donations are much appreciated. You are helping build the best center for YOU! Looking forward to another wonderful year.

Holiday Insights: Succos

Succos is a holiday with roots in many different parts of the Jewish tradition. Succos is one of the three pilgrimage festivals during the time of the Temple during which Jews would journey to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. Succos commemorates the wandering of the Jews in the desert for 40 years. During that time, the Jews lived in temporary huts or booths called succos in Hebrew. Also referred to as the Feast of Gathering, the holiday reminds us to thank G-d for the many fruits of the earth. It is easy to look at the work of modern farmers and forget that the harvest is in G-ds hands. Recognizing G-ds place at the center in the wheel of fortune keeps our egos in check during the good times and keeps despair in its place during hard times. Lastly, Succos is often called the time of our rejoicing. In contrast to the solemn message of the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Succos is a joyous festival.

Rejoice with us at our Annual Succah Party on Thursday, October 4th at 12 pm. Please register in advance.
