Pankration Essay:

In the novel Pankration by Dyan Blacklock the main character Nic develops significantly from a self centred and immature boy to a autonomous, self sufficient, justice seeking and courageous man. This essay will convey the reasons how and why Nic has changed during the course of the story. At the beginning of the story Pankration Nic is very selfish and shows no care for slaves. Basically, he believes that the slaves are worthless objects. A quote from the book which reflects this is: Nic didnt want to hear anymore. Anyway, a few slaves dying wasnt the end of the world. His stepfather could just buy some more. Nic also expected to be looked after at a high standard and took his fortunate and spoilt life for granted. This is because he had never experienced life as a lower class citizen (slave) and consequently couldnt comprehend a slaves perspective. However, Nic is caring and loving to most members of his family (Gorgias and Artemis). At the end of the story Pankration Nic has changed immensely. He has become mentally and physically stronger due to his experiences and hardships he has had to endure during the journey of the story. For instance, in Chapter 17 when the sinister Amasis captures and imprisons Nic he doesnt lose hope and shows that he has become more resilient and determined. He has also become more formidable due to the bravery and courage he has developed, whilst a goat herder, which is displayed in Chapter 5 when he defeats a wolf of such menacing behaviour. Nics attitude towards slaves has changed as he has a sudden realisation whilst a goat herder that lower class citizens (slaves) are just like him and they should be treated with the same respect (i.e. have the same rights). He also understands slaves perspectives as he has experienced all the hardships they usually have to endure. Consequently, he is determined to make changes in the name of Truth & Justice. Nics physical appearance has also changed dramatically from a young boy to a mature man and he can now cope with tough physical work. This is reflected in the novel: The boy who had left Athens was now a young man. Overall, he has become more empathetic and attained a resourceful, autonomous, courageous and determined personality. For instance, in Chapter 5 he is able to make a flute, a slingshot and a drum which demonstrates a self sufficient quality in Nic. In conclusion, Nic has developed immensely throughout the pilgrimage of the story and consequently become a better person.
