First of all congratulations to your KVK team members for this great web site. Thanks to all members who are really working hard and giving answer to each and every farmers on their questions. This is only sight I found who gives such detailed information. I regularly read your answers on dairy farming. I have 10 Acres land with good irrigation system near Karad in my village. I want to start a Dairy farm starting from 10 Cow / Buffalo then increase upto 50 in One years time and upto 200 in Two years time. Is it possible? I want to know various things from you. If one cow / Buffalo is start giving milk from 1st Jan.For how many days she can give milk before next lactation? How much is Dry period ? Again when this cow / buffalo start giving milk? I want to Know this cycle period in days say for 365 Days or for 730days? What is meaning of Dairy farming in Scientific way? How it works? What is advance technology in Dairy Farming? If I keep my farm in scientific way how much maximum yield can I get from buffalo / cow. Can you give list of commercial Dairy farming units to whom we can visit? Did you know any dairy farm who is using advanced technology for their dairy farming for high yield and clean milk? Which is profitable Cow or Buffalo in our region.? Does companies like Chitale, Dynamix provides good quality Cows or Buffalo? Did you finalise your next Date of 5 Days Dairy Training Program at KVK Baramati? ---------------------------------------[Edit 1 times, last edit by ajit.desai at Nov 27, 2006 5:30:38 PM]

According to subjects cited by you,you are going to start a dairy unit of 10 cows /buffaloes.You want ot expand it up to 200 buffaloes and it is possible .However following points should be keep in mind before starting dairy unit, 1. Daily requirements of green fodder for adult animals ( comprising cereal and legume green fooder) a.Cereal green fodder- 12 to 13 kg b.Legume green fodder- 12- 13 kg. c. Dry fodder- 5-6 kg 2.Land requirement for growing green fodder A) Green fodder 0.06 to 0.07 ha per animal. # Cereal green fodder- 0.04 to 0.05 ha #Legume green fodder- 0.03 ha Toatl area- 0.14 to 0.16 ha It means that we can fed 10 lactating animals in one hactare area.

One cow/buffalo start milking at 1st january then it will give milk for following daysCrossbred cow:- 280- 305 days. Buffalo (Murrah)- Average 250 to 300 days . Ideal dry period of animals- Crossbred cow 60 to 90 days. Buffalo- 110 to 184 days. After dry period cow/buffalo will calved and will start milking. #Dairy farming in scientific way means getting one calf from cow/buffalo per year.It works on advance knowledge of management than traditionalanimal rearing. This includes following techniques1.Use of high quality animals having good Pdegree record.:-Indian animals like Sahiwal,Sindhi,Gir, Gaolao,Dangi Haryana or Crossbred Holstein fresean/Jersy are good animals in cattle species. In buffalo Murrah,Mhaisana, Jafrabadi ,Surti,Bhadawari etc are good animals. 2.Use of artificial insemination:- to produce good vigour of crossbred animals. 3.Prevention of diseases in animals by doing regular preventive vaccination. 4.Provision of balanced ration for high producing animals. 5.Use of regular deworming of animals by afer dung sample analysis. 6.Provision of mineral supplements for high producing animals. 7.Provision of good quality of silage to animals throughout year. 8.Care of newborn calves. 9.Reproductive management by identifying heat in animals and use of artificial insemination. 10.Record keeping of Pdegree,Regular Management practices(calves, heifer, bulls, vaccination ,deworming),Milk yield,Sale and purchase etc. 11.Maretting products and byproducts of dairy. 12.Culling of unproductive and undesirable animals from the flock. All the above said comes under scientifis way of dairy farming.all these points are interrelated in daily activities of dairy farming.

Advance technologies in dairy farming: Following are the advance technologies used in dairy farming:* Artificial insemination- This is now used for production of high quality of cross bred animals from indegenous poor producing animals. * Embryo transfer technology:- Useful for getting good genetic material in farm animals. * Laboratory diagnosis technique- Radio immmuno assay and PCR ,these techniques are useful for disease diagnosis and animals reproduction. * Sonography- Useful for disease diagnosis and interventions in reproduction of animals. Computer - Programming in animal management. However, due to cost of implementation ,these techniques have limitation except Artificial insemination and Sonography. As per yield per animal is concern, use of scientific method will increase yield than traditional farming. Commercial dairy farm- Dynamix dary industry ltd,94.MIDC,Bhigwan road,Baramati,Dist- Pune Ph-02112-243822/24. - Govind milk & milk product,Pandharpur road,Kolki,Phaltan.Dist- satar Ph02166/221302 - Chitale milk and milk products,A/P- Bhilwadi,Dist- sangli Ph- 02346/233112. In above said unit, you can see advance technology used as well as implemented conecept of clean milk production. In region of Karad,in coe HF crossbred ans in buffalo Murrah and Mhaisana are profitable animals. For supply of good quality of cow and buffalo, you can visit to Chitale dairy. Re: Advance / Commercial Dairy Farming

Sir Thanks for valuable information. Also I will registering my name for 5 Day workshop.Sir, you said that Dairy farming in scientific way means getting one calf from cow/buffalo per year. I want to Know that1. Then How much maximum yield we can get by this way both from good cow/buffalo in one year. 2. Yield is depends on which factors? Like Fodder, Other ration, Health, etc. Which is the most imp. factor so that we can concentrate on that. Is it possible to know in percentage wise which factor affects yield. Thanks Once again.Ajit Desai.

with reference to subject sited by you in scienctific dairy farmaing one calf / year policy depends on following factors. - Inter calving period & conception rate interval is below 90 days - Inter calving perion & first insemination period is below 70 days - Conception rate at first insemination is above 60 % - No of insemination / conception is below 1.5 - abortions ( between 45 - 265 days of pregnancy) is below 3 % & culling due to infertility is below 5% - Age at first calving in cow is 24 months.

Regarding yield factor all the noted points namely health, balanced ration, etc. are interlinked with each other and each point is very imp. Production factor also depends on genetic composition of animal so it is impossible to interprit maximum yield / animal at this stage. but taking into consideration all points cause good production by the animal thanking you Dr. D.P.
