LEN: ESCULTURA URBANA EN SIETE RUTAS URBAN SCULPTURE IN SEVEN ROUTES

En los ltimos aos Len ha abierto sus espacios pblicos a la creacin contempornea. La escultura y las intervenciones escultricas se integran en la arquitectura urbana como un elemento ms, aportando nuevas seas de identidad al territorio compartido. Rincones, jardines, rotondas, calles, plazas... han empezado a ser espacios habitados por extraos inquilinos, por obras artsticas que, de alguna manera, cobran vida en la memoria colectiva, dibujando el mapa singular que identica y otorga personalidad a una ciudad. Algunas de las esculturas pblicas pasan desapercibidas, como si hubieran sido mimetizadas por su entorno inmediato. Otras se convierten en hitos para los transentes, en sus andanzas y paseos a travs de la urbe. Como objetos de arte, no obstante, han sido creadas para el gusto y la contemplacin de los ciudadanos. Y las huellas del arte, como las de la naturaleza, se inscriben en la memoria y conforman paisajes singulares en el subconsciente individual, pero tambin en el colectivo. La nmina de artistas que rman estas obras es amplia: desde el escultor y gran

imaginero cntabro Vctor de los Ros a los pujantes artistas leoneses Amancio Gonzlez o Jos Luis Casas, pasando por nombres como los de Marino Amaya, Juan Carlos Uriarte, Jurez y Palmero, Muiz Alique, Trapote, Ramn Villa, Corinne Van Bergen, Alberto Bauelos, Jos Luis Fernndez, Pedro Santamarta, Francisco Chamorro, Ricardo Echegaray, Juan Villoria, Ramn Villa, Vinicio Momoli, Ral Fernndez... sin olvidar la importante aportacin que ultima Eduardo Arroyo con un conjunto escultrico para el entorno de Puerta Castillo. Esta pequea gua propone distintos itinerarios por la ciudad de Len, invitando a descubrir sus esculturas pblicas, a contemplarlas ms de cerca e incluso a contextualizarlas en el relato de la historia urbana. concurrida, la ms visitada, pero tambin la ms descontrolada y expuesta al deterioro, si no se cuida. Porque, no hay que olvidarlo, la escultura pblica forma parte del patrimonio de una ciudad y enriquece las miradas que la habitan. In the last years, public spaces in Len have ourished with contemporary art. Sculpture and sculpture production have blended with urban architecture as if they were another element, bestowing the shared spaces with new signs of identity. Spots, gardens, roundabouts, roads, squares they have all turned into spaces which are starting to be inhabited by strange occupants, by works of art that somehow shine in collective memory, therefore designing the particular map that identies and gives personality to a city.

Some of the sculptures in the city go unnoticed, as if they had merged into their immediate background. Others turn into milestones for the passer-by, taking part in their adventures and promenades across the city. Inasmuch as works of art, however, they have been created for the sake of the delight and contemplation of citizens. And art traces, like natures, are part of memory and they build up particular landscapes both in the individual and in the collective subconscious. There is a wide range of names undersigning these works: from Cantabrias great sculptor and maker of religious images Vctor de los Ros to the booming Leonese artists Amancio Gonzlez or Jos Luis Casas, counting also with names such as Marino Amaya, Juan Carlos Uriarte, Jurez y Pal-
mero, Muiz Alique, Trapote, Ramn Villa, Corinne Van Bergen, Alberto Bauelos, Jos Luis Fernndez, Pedro Santamarta, Francisco Chamorro, Ricardo Echegaray, Juan Villoria, Ramn Villa, Vinicio Momoli, Ral Fernndez..., not to forget the important contribution of Eduardo Arroyo, nishing his sculptural group for Puerta Castillo surroundings. This small guide suggests dierent routes through the City of Len, inviting you to discover its sculptures in open places, to contemplate them more closely and even to set them in the context of the urban history. It is a promenade through the most popular yet uncontrolled and menaced art exhibition, if it is not properly preserved. Public sculpture, let us bear in mind, is part of a citys legacy, and it enriches the eyes and regards of its inhabitants.

SANTUARIO DE LA VIRGEN DEL CAMINO Fachada dedicada al Pentecosts El destacado creador cataln Jos Mara Subirachs autor de una parte de la obra escultrica de la Sagrada Familia de Gaud, en Barcelona es el artce de las esbeltas guras de bronce de la fachada de este santuario vanguardista, de gran signicacin para Len y su alfoz, construido en 1961 por el arquitecto dominico portugus Francisco Coello. La obra de Subirachs, con un tratamiento expresionista, se sita en la tradicin narrativa de la arquitectura religiosa. Y si el Pentecostes exterior es magnco, el visitante podr comprobar cmo en el interior del templo la perfecta combinacin de luces y colores las vidrieras son del artista cataln Rafols Casamada se transforma en una atmsfera de armona espiritual.
VIRGIN OF THE ROAD SANCTUARY Faade consecrated to the Pentecost The outstanding Catalan creator Jos Mara Subirachs author of some of the sculpture works at Gauds Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona is also the creator of the slim gures in bronze displayed on this avant-garde sanctuarys faade. This sanctuary, built in 1961 by the Dominican Portuguese architect Francisco Coello, is of great importance to Len and its surrounding area. Subirachs expressionist work is inscribed in the narrative tradition of religious architecture. And if the outside Pentecost representation is wonderful, inside the temple the visitor will marvel at the perfect combination of lights and colours formed by the stained glass windows by Catalan artist Rafols Casamada which give an atmosphere of complete spiritual harmony.

Monumento a la lucha leonesa | ngel Muiz Alique
PLAZA DE TOROS / ESTADIO ANTONIO AMILIVIA Monumento a la Lucha Leonesa Situado en las proximidades del Estadio Antonio Amilivia, el monumento es obra de ngel Muiz Alique, autor de numerosas obras escultricas en Len. Pieza de tema tradicional leons, en este caso un deporte autctono, como la lucha leonesa o aluches. Un deporte que cuenta con muchos seguidores en distintas zonas de la montaa y de la ribera, fundamentalmente en la parte por la que discurren los ros Toro, Curueo, Porma y Esla. La obra es descriptiva de este juego en el que dos luchadores se enfrentan, dentro de un crculo, y mediante tcnicas denominadas maas intentan que el contrincante toque el suelo con la espalda.
BULLRING / ANTONIO AMILIVIA STADIUM Leonese Fight Memorial This memorial by ngel Muiz Alique, sculptor of many other works in Len, is located near the Stadium Antonio Amilivia. The sculpture depicts a traditional Leonese subject: Leonese ght, or aluches, the native sport. This sport has many adepts in dierent mountain and river-side areas, specially the area formed by the owing of Toro, Curueo, Porma and Esla rivers. The work describes this sport, in which the two ghters are confronted inside a circle, and by means of techniques called maas (tricks), they try to make their opponent touch the oor with their back.

Toro ancestral | Juan Villoria
PLAZA DE TOROS / JARDINES EXTERIORES Toro ancestral Realizada por el escultor leons Juan Villoria, hace referencia al ro Toro y a la cultura rural y ganadera de la montaa leonesa, pero conceptualmente tambin se vincula con esculturas ancestrales, como los Toros de Guisando. El Ayuntamiento de Len adquiri la obra en 2005 para colocarla en los jardines exteriores de la Plaza de Toros, sobre cuyo csped destaca esta esquemtica gura bovina, llena de contrastes visuales y geomtricos, con su juego colorista de distintos metales (acero inoxidable al chorro de arena y acero cortn).
BULLRING / OUTDOOR GARDENS Toro ancestral This piece by Leonese sculptor Juan Villoria is a reference to Toro River and the rural and cattle-raising culture on the Leonese hills, but also, from a conceptual point of view, it is connected to ancestral sculptures, as the Guisando Bulls (Toros de Guisando). Len City Council purchased the work in 2005 and placed it in the outdoor gardens of the bullring, where it stands out on the lawn, full of visual and geometrical contrasts, and playing with the colours of its dierent metals (sand-jet stainless steel and weathering steel).

Intramuros | Jos Luis Casas Paramio
BARRIO DE LA LASTRA Intramuros Enorme escultura de Jos Luis Casas Paramio, ubicada a nales de 2006 en la gran rotonda del nuevo barrio de La Lastra (la que unir la prolongacin de la calle Jos Aguado y el acceso a la Ronda Sur). Construida con hormign y acero cortn, los juegos geomtricos son protagonistas de esta obra, pero tambin el contraste entre materiales y el dilogo entre composicin y descomposicin. Cada uno de los tres grandes muros de hormign con los que est hecha mide casi 10 metros de altura. Una compleja estructura de acero se apoya en ellos y aumenta an ms el tamao de la pieza, una de las ms ambiciosas de Casas Paramio.
LA LASTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD Inside the walls This is a great sculpture by Jos Luis Casas Paramio, installed in the late 2006 in the big roundabout of the new neighbourhood of La Lastra (this roundabout will connect the extension of Jos Aguado street to the access to Ronda Sur). Made of concrete and weathering steel, this work presents geometry plays, as well as a contrast between the materials and a dialogue between composition and decomposition. Each of its three walls of concrete is almost 30 feet long. They support a complex steel structure which enlarges the work even more, being one of the most ambitious works by Casas Paramio.

Sueo reejado en el tiempo | Aquilino Fernndez Barrio
BARRIO DE LA LASTRA Sueo reejado en el tiempo

El escultor Aquilino Fernndez Barrio ha trabajado sobre chapa de hierro de un 1,2 cm para dar forma de L inclinada a esta obra de ms de ocho metros, que pesa unas seis toneladas, y que se puede contemplar a lo lejos (como dos tubos de un inconfundible color rojo) desde la entrada a Puente Castro. Instalada a nales de 2006, en una rotonda del futuro barrio de La Lastra, estamos ante una obra conceptual, alusiva al lecho que dejan las lastras (piedras de ro, estrechitas y alargadas, de las que toma su nombre este barrio) cuando se levantan con la mano. El hueco de las lastras, como esquirlas de la memoria, es tambin una metfora de las ilusiones perdidas, sobre las que a su vez se puede levantar (construir) un nuevo sueo (en este caso un nuevo barrio). En el interior de los tubos de hierro est previsto que doce cristales con mercurio (smbolo del tiempo) iluminen la pieza desde dentro.
LA LASTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD Dream reected on time

Sculptor Aquilino Fernndez Barrio has worked on 0.50-inch iron sheet to give this work the shape of an inclined L that is more than 24 feet high and weights some six tons. It can be seen from afar, as two unmistakeably red tubes, from the entrance to Castro Bridge. This conceptual work was installed in the late 2006 in a roundabout of the coming neighbourhood of La Lastra, making reference to the bed that lastras leave when they are lifted with the hand (lastras are river stones, narrow and with elongated shape, from which this neighbourhood borrows the name). The empty spaces inside these stones are like the remains of the memory, and they are also a metaphor of lost hopes, upon which a new dream (in this case, a new neighbourhood) can be raised (built). Twelve mercury crystals placed inside the iron tubes (as a symbol of time) are expected to illuminate the piece from inside.

Personajes | Ramn Villa
ESTACIN DE FERROCARRIL / JARDINES INTERIORES Personajes Escultura del artista leons Ramn Villa, realizada en 1989 y ubicada en los jardines interiores de la Estacin de Ferrocarril, sobre una plataforma. El escultor ha trabajado sobre dos grandes bloques de piedra casi simtricos, buscando potenciar la expresividad de la materia utilizada. En contraste, ha incorporado a la obra otra serie de pequeos elementos de acero que remiten a paisajes industriales. En conjunto, la obra plantea un dilogo y una tensin muy sugerentes entre lo industrial y lo natural, e invita a su contemplacin circular.
TRAIN STATION / INDOOR GARDENS Characters This sculpture was created by the Leonese artist Ramn Villa in 1989, and was placed on a platform in the indoor gardens of the train station. The sculptor worked on two big, almost symmetrical blocks of stone, trying to power the expressivity of the material used. In contrast, he has incorporated to the work a series of small steel elements that remind us of the industrial landscapes. As a whole, the work sets up a dialogue and a suggesting strain between the industrial and natural worlds, and invites us to contemplate it in a circular way.

Atrapar el paisaje | Jurez y Palmero
ESTACIN DE FERROCARRIL / JARDINES INTERIORES Atrapar el paisaje Esta instalacin, realizada por el equipo de artistas leoneses Jurez y Palmero en 1999, es el testimonio de una performance de ejecucin colectiva, promovida por el Centro de Operaciones Land Art El Apeadero en la localidad de Bercianos del Real Camino (Len). En aquella performance intervinieron decenas de personas fotograando a la vez el paisaje circundante. En recuerdo de aquella experiencia, esta obra est formada por cien balizas de hierro, sobre las que se sitan otras tantas cmaras de fotos fundidas en aluminio.
TRAIN STATION / INDOOR GARDENS Seizing the landscape This installation, carried out by the team of Leonese artists Jurez & Palmero in 1999, is a testimonial to a collective performance, promoted by Centro de Operaciones Land Art El Apeadero, in the town of Bercianos del Real Camino (Province of Len). In that performance, dozens of people participated by taking photographs of the surrounding landscape. In memorial of that experience, this work is made of a hundred of iron posts, each of which supports cameras cast in aluminium.

Len | Alberto Bauelos
ESTACIN DE FERROCARRIL / JARDINES EXTERIORES Len Obra del burgals Alberto Bauelos, realizada en 1990, y ubicada en los jardines exteriores de la Estacin de Ferrocarril en 1993. La pieza, un gran bloque monoltico, forma parte de la coleccin artstica de la compaa ferroviaria, y se enmarca en la abstraccin ms pura. El escultor ha sometido un bloque de basalto, vertical e irregular, a una manipulacin respetuosa, en un intento de no despojarlo de su propia esencia y con un criterio no demasiado alejado del que pudo poseer un escultor del Neoltico.
TRAIN STATION / OUTDOOR GARDENS Len This work was created by the Burgos-born artist Alberto Bauelos in 1990, and was installed in the outdoor gardens of the train station in 1993. The item is a great monolithic block belonging to the art collection of the railway company, and belongs to the purest abstraction. The sculptor has worked with a vertical, irregular block of basalt in a respectful way, trying not to undermine its own essence and taking the viewpoint that could have been taken by a Neolithic sculptor.

PLAZA DE GUZMN Monumento a Guzmn el Bueno La primera gran escultura monumental que se instal en la capital leonesa es obra de Aniceto Marinas, y fue inaugurada en 1900, despus de permanecer casi dos aos tapada con un saco. Est dedicada a la memoria de Alonso Prez de Guzmn (Len, 1256), llamado El Bueno por su abnegada defensa del sitio de Tarifa en 1294, cuando preri entregar el pual con el que dar muerte a su propio hijo en poder del enemigo antes que rendir la plaza que le haba conado el rey Sancho IV. La pieza, realizada en bronce, recibi muchas crticas en su da, pero ha llegado a ser una de las ms emblemticas de la ciudad. El pedestal sobre el que se levanta la gura es de Gabriel Abreu y sobre l guran tres leyendas: A Guzmn el Bueno la provincia de Len MDCCCXCV;

Los buenos caballeros ni compran ni venden la victoria, y No engendr yo jo para que fuese contra mi tierra. GUZMN SQUARE Guzmn el Bueno Memorial The rst monumental sculpture in Len was created by Aniceto Marinas, and was inaugurated in 1900, after remaining two years below a cover. It was raised in memory of Alonso Prez de Guzmn, born in Len in 1256 and called El Bueno (The Good) because of his erce defence of Tarifas siege in 1294. The story goes that he preferred to give away the knife with which his son would be killed by the enemy before yielding the stronhold that king Sancho IV had trusted him. Although very criticized in its days, this bronze sculpture has become
a landmark in the city. The pedestal that supports the sculpture is Gabriel Abreus, and three maxims read on it: To Guzmn el Bueno, from the Province of Len, MDCCCXCV, Good gentlemen neither sell nor buy victory and I did not engender a son to see him go against my homeland.

Los cuatro leones | Victor de los Ros Campos
PUENTE DE LOS LEONES Los cuatro leones Como cuatro guardianes, cuatro leones de piedra protegen las entradas del puente sobre el ro Bernesga, que comunica la Estacin de Ferrocarril con la ciudad de Len. Estas cuatro guras blancas, smbolos de la ciudad, salieron del taller del escultor e imaginero cntabro Vctor de los Ros Campos en 1967, y enseguida se convirtieron en imgenes seeras de la capital del antiguo Reino de Len.
LIONS BRIDGE The Four Lions Just as four guardians, four lions of stone protect the entrances of the bridge that connects the train station to the City of Len, and goes across the Bernesga River. The author of these four white gures is Vctor de los Ros Campos, a Cantabrian sculptor and maker of religious images. The four lions are a symbol of the city, and they emerged from his atelier in 1967, becoming soon the emblematic images of the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Len.

Ventana de la luz - Homenaje a Maese Nicols | Ricardo Echegaray Fraile
PASEO DE LA CONDESA Ventana de la luz - Homenaje a Maese Nicols Realizada por el escultor cntabro Ricardo Echegaray Fraile, sta es una de las mejores piezas de las que puede presumir la ciudad. Con ella gan el artista, en 1982, el Certamen de Escultura Ciudad de Len convocado excepcionalmente ese ao por el Ayuntamiento y la Diputacin. La obra est realizada en acero inoxidable, y en ella se articulan tres unidades plsticas idnticas que componen una estructura geomtrica regular: un tringulo issceles que termina, en su lado ms pequeo, en forma semicircular. Esta elegante escultura se integra perfectamente en los jardines de La Condesa, donde fue colocada en 1983.
PASEO DE LA CONDESA PROMENADE Window of the Light - Homage to Maese Nicols This piece, by Cantabrian sculptor Ricardo Echegaray Fraile, is one of the best works of which the city boasts. With it, the artist won the 1982 Len Sculpture Contest, organized in that year exceptionally by the Council and the Provincial Parliament. The piece is made of stainless steel, presenting three identical gures that form a regular geometric structure: an isosceles triangle, having in its smaller side a semicircular shape. This elegant sculpture is perfectly integrated within La Condesa (the Countess) gardens, where it was settled in 1983.

La rana | Pedro Santamarta Cuenca
CALLE ROA DE LA VEGA La Rana As se conoce popularmente esta escultura de Pedro Santamarta Cuenca, inslitamente colocada en una pequea entrada que presenta la calle Roa de la Vega ante uno de los edicios de la acera izquierda, entrando desde La Condesa. Realizada en fundicin de cemento blanco, la obra juega con las lneas curvas y sugiere un cuerpo animal de extraa apariencia (de ah el nombre de La Rana). E incluso incorpora un cierto enfoque funcional, puesto que de alguna manera tambin anima a ser utilizada como asiento para descansar.
ROA DE LA VEGA STREET The Frog Thats how this sculpture by Pedro Santamarta Cuenca is popularly known. It was unexpectedly placed in a small entrance in Roa De La Vega Street in front of one of the buildings on the left pavement, if you come from La Condesa. Cast in white cement, the work plays with curving lines, suggesting the body of a strange animal (thats the reason why it was called The Frog). It even oers some kind of functionality, because it encourages people to use it as a seat to have a rest.

Mural | Jos Luis Snchez
GRAN VA DE SAN MARCOS / FACHADA DEL HOTEL QUINDS Mural El prestigioso artista y escultor Jos Luis Snchez rma este mural que se coloc sobre la fachada del Hotel Quinds hace aos. La obra original fue reutilizada, ya que no haba sido concebida para este espacio, sino que, en realidad, formaba parte de la puerta principal de una nca. La pieza, realizada en bronce fundido, muestra una composicin equilibrada y sugerente, en la que se combinan supercies curvas y formas semicilndricas, incorporando un delicado movimiento ondulatorio.
GRAN VA DE SAN MARCOS STREET / QUINDS HOTEL FAADE Wall ornaments The knowledgeable artist and sculptor Jos Luis Snchez undersigns this piece displayed on the Quinds Hotel faade years ago. The original work was reused, since it had not been designed for this space, but for the main entrance of another estate. The piece, cast in iron, shows a balanced and suggesting composition, in which curving lines and semi-cylindrical shapes are combined, incorporating a delicate wavy movement.

Conjunto de Medallones | Pedro Santamarta Cuenca
PLAZA DE SAN MARCOS Conjunto de Medallones Realizados por Pedro Santamarta Cuenca, los 18 medallones de bronce aparecen colocados en la franja ajardinada que discurre desde la sede del Procurador del Comn (antigua Casa del Peregrino) hasta el viejo puente de piedra sobre el Bernesga, por delante de San Marcos. Las piezas, toscas y simples en su concepcin, incorporan un tratamiento entre realista y expresionista, y cada una de ellas hace alusin a una localidad del Camino de Santiago. El paralelismo que mantienen con los magnifcos medallones de piedra de Juan de Juni, sobre la fachada de San Marcos, provoca la comparacin inevitable, en perjuicio de los de bronce.
PLAZA DE SAN MARCOS SQUARE Set of Medallions The 18 medallions that comprise this work by Pedro Santamarta Cuenca are located in the gardened stripe that goes from the oce of the Castilian Ombudsman (former House of the Pilgrim) to the old stone bridge across Bernesga river, in front of San Marcos. The pieces, which are rough and simple in their conception, are a medley of Realism and Expressionism, and each of them is a reference to a place on the Road to Santiago. Their analogy with Juan de Junis stone medallions in San Marcos faade turns the comparison unavoidable, to the detriment of the bronze pieces.

PLAZA DE SAN MARCOS Peregrino sentado en el Crucero Esta obra de Martn Vzquez de Acua se incorpor a la plaza de San Marcos en 1998, dentro del itinerario urbano del Camino de Santiago. Realizada en bronce fundido, representa a un romero descansando al pie del Crucero, admirando la hermosa fachada del monumento plateresco. Con sus gastadas sandalias junto a sus pies, el peregrino adquiere en este contexto arquitectnico un sentido ms metafrico y ornamental que artstico. El Crucero, en s, es una nueva versin del que siempre existi en este lugar (al menos desde el siglo XV).
PLAZA DE SAN MARCOS SQUARE Pilgrim seating on the Cross This work by Martn Vzquez de Acua was incorporated to San Marcos square in 1998, taking part in the urban itinerary of the Road to Santiago. Cast in bronze, it depicts a pilgrim while resting at the feet of the Cross, admiring the wonderful faade of the Plateresque monument. With his wornout sandals resting by his feet, the pilgrim acquires in this context a metaphorical and ornamental meaning, more than an artistic one. The Cross in itself is a new version of the one that has always been in this place (at least since the 15th century).

ERAS DE RENUEVA / GLORIETA JUNTO AL AUDITORIO Homenaje al Maestro Odn Alonso Obra conmemorativa, realizada por el escultor ngel Muiz Alique, en recuerdo del entraable director de orquesta, msico, compositor y profesor Odn Alonso, que aparece representado junto a dos nios. Realizada inicialmente en fundicin de cemento y posteriormente en bronce, esta obra estuvo colocada en el Paseo de la Condesa, y hace unos aos se reubic en esta glorieta cercana al Auditorio Ciudad de Len, un lugar mucho ms apropiado para recordar al viejo Maestro padre del director de orquesta Odn Alonso que inculc el amor por la msica a tantos nios y nias leoneses.
ERAS DE RENUEVA / ROUNDABOUT BY THE AUDITORIUM Homage to Odn Alonso This memorial was created by ngel Muiz Alique, as a tribute to the so much cherished orchestra director, musician, composer and teacher Odn Alonso, who is depicted with two children. Initially cast in cement, and then in bronze, it was located in the Paseo de la Condesa, and was relocated some years ago in this roundabout near the Ciudad de Len Auditorium. Undoubtedly, a much more convenient place to pay homage to the old Maestro father of the orchestra director Odn Alonso who taught so many Leonese children to love music.

PLAZA DE LA INMACULADA La Inmaculada Escultura del artista maragato Marino Amaya, sobre un pedestal del arquitecto Ramn Caas. Fue realizada en los aos 50 del siglo XX, convirtindose en el monumento ms emblemtico del Ensanche de Len y en un hito de referencia y distribucin urbana. Se trata de la segunda gran obra escultrica de carcter pblico que se coloc en la ciudad, despus de la dedicada a Guzmn. Su contenido religioso dene la sociedad de la poca, en pleno rgimen franquista: colocada sobre una gran columna, la delicada gura de la Virgen se eleva distante, sin inmutarse ante la realidad circundante.

PLAZA DE LA INMACULADA SQUARE The Inmaculada Sculpture by Maragatera-born artist Marino Amaya, on a pedestal created by architect Ramn Caas. It was done in the 1950s, turning into the most emblematic monument of Ensanche de Len, and a landmark in the city. This was the second great public sculpture which was displayed in the city, after the one consecrated to Guzmn. Its religious theme denes those times society, which was crossing Francos regime. Standing on top of a great column, the delicate gure of the Virgin rises in the distance, unperturbed before the surrounding reality.

CALLE JULIO DEL CAMPO / SEDE ACTUAL DE ASPRONA Fachada La fachada de esta antigua escuela construida en 1917 por el lntropo y escultor Julio del Campo llama la atencin tanto por su calidad tcnica como por su amplio despliegue iconogrco. Desde un tratamiento clsico, en la obra se han utilizado recursos variados pilastras, arcos de medio punto, hornacinas, distintos ornamentos... para crear una estructura en la cual se van incorporando diferentes personajes y temas vinculados a la Ilustracin, a modo de homenaje pblico. La fachada despliega, adems, un discurso con un cierto sentido didctico y educativo.
JULIO DEL CAMPO STREET / CENTRAL OFFICE OF ASPRONA Faade This old schools faade, built in 1917 by the philanthropist and sculptor Julio del Campo, calls ones attention for the quality of its technique as well as for its ample iconographic deployment. Employing a classical method, varied resources have been used to create a structure in which the dierent characters and themes dealing with Illustration are incorporated, as a public homage. These resources include pilasters, semicircular arches, niches, various ornaments, etc. In addition, the faade represents a discourse made somehow in a didactic and educative sense.

CALLE ORDOO II / AYUNTAMIENTO Homenaje al Ayuntamiento Pieza del artista leons Juan Carlos Uriarte, colocada en el ao 1998 frente a la entrada de la actual sede administrativa de la Casa Consistorial, en recuerdo de la construccin del Ayuntamiento. Realizada en piedra de Boar y bronce, la escultura reproduce la fachada de la Casa de la Poridad de la Plaza de San Marcelo (antiguo Consistorio), y un documento de Alfonso XI de 1345 en el que se nombran ocho hombres buenos para que tomen decisiones sobre la ciudad. La escultura contiene tambin una hornacina para depositar el libro de rmas de la ciudad.
ORDOO II STREET / CITY COUNCIL Homage to the City Council This piece by Leonese artist Juan Carlos Uriarte, placed in 1998 in front of the entrance of the nowadays administrative oce of the Consistory House, was raised in memory of the construction of the City Council. Made of stone from Boar and bronze, the sculpture portrays the faade of the former City Council (Casa de la Poridad) in San Marcelo square. It also portrays a document by Alfonso XI, dating from 1345, in which eight good men are appointed to take decisions on the city. The sculpture also has a niche where the signatures registry of the city is left.

CALLE ORDOO II / AYUNTAMIENTO Mural forjado El mural forjado sobre la fachada del Ayuntamiento es obra del gran escultor zamorano Jos Luis Alonso Coomonte, un artista formado en los secretos de las tcnicas artesanas. Representa un extrao mundo orgnico, multiforme, del que surgen, como frutos o ores, las monedas (una alusin a la entidad nanciera antao propietaria del inmueble). Plsticamente, la pieza acierta en su integracin con el edicio, estableciendo un dilogo conciliador entre distintos materiales y formas. El acero forjado recorre con sus lneas sinuosas y sus texturas la estructura geomtrica de la fachada, a modo de friso, as como las puertas principales de acceso al edicio.

ORDOO II STREET / CITY COUNCIL Ornaments in forged steel The ornamentation in forged steel that can be found on the City Council faade is the work of Zamoras sculptor Jos Luis Alonso Coomonte, an artist who was formed in the secrets of handcraft technique. It depicts a strange organic, multiform world, from which the coins come up like fruits or owers (a reference to the nancial institution which was the owner of the estate in the past). Aesthetically, the piece ts properly in its integration with the building, setting forward a conciliating dialogue between these materials and the shapes. The forged steel covers with its sinuous lines and its textures the geometric structure of the faade, as if it were a frieze, as well as the main entrances to the building.

PLAZA DE SANTO DOMINGO La vieja negrilla Sentada en el suelo, la vieja negrilla parece pedir limosna con sus grandes manos apoyadas en el suelo. Esta magnca escultura de Amancio Gonzlez Andrs se realiz en 1997, en fundicin de cemento tintado, para un proyecto de Parque Escultrico en Trobajo del Cerecedo que no lleg a realizarse. Al nal se coloc en la plaza de Santo Domingo, donde poco a poco se ha ido erosionando. Se trata de una de las obras con ms expresin, potencia y dinamismo de las que existen en Len. Una pieza clave que se ha integrado como pocas en el paisaje urbano de la ciudad, y que requiere peridicas restauraciones. El Ayuntamiento tiene en proyecto pasarla a bronce.
PLAZA DE SANTO DOMINGO SQUARE The old elm tree Seating on the oor, the old elm tree seems to be begging with her big hands on the oor. This magnicent sculpture was created in 1997 by Amancio Gonzlez Andrs, cast in pigmented cement, intended for a project for the Sculpture Park in Trobajo del Cerecedo that never came true. It was nally installed in Santo Domingo square, where little by little it started to deteriorate. This is one of the most expressive, strong and dynamic works ever to exist in Len. It is a masterpiece which has blended with the urban landscape and requires constant restoration. The City Council is planning to cast it in bronze.

JUAN DEL ENZINA Busto de Juan del Enzina Realizado por el escultor leons Laureano Villanueva Gutirrez en 1968, se trata de un busto en bronce de buena factura, en el que cobran importancia la expresividad y las texturas. El rostro del msico y literato del Renacimiento que da nombre al Instituto de Enseanza Secundaria ubicado en esta plaza, junto al Edicio Pallars (nueva sede del Museo de Len), ofrece asimismo un tratamiento expresivo de gran intensidad.
SANTO DOMINGO SQUARE / JUAN DEL ENZINA STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL Bust of Juan del Enzina Expressivity and textures are of the utmost importance in this bronze sculpture created in 1968 by the Leonese sculptor Laureano Villanueva Gutirrez. The face of the Renaissance musician and writer that gives the name to the state secondary school situated in this square, by the Pallars building (the new building for the Museum of Len) also oers an expressive treatment of great intensity.

PLAZA DE SANTO DOMINGO / CALLE PILOTOS REGUERAL Los Chopos Vista desde la lejana, la pequea chopera parece surgir como una mnima expresin volumtrica sobre la acera. Sin embargo, cuando el observador se acerca, el fantstico bosquecillo, como un oasis metlico en medio del asfalto, alcanza su mxima signicacin. Realizada por Francisco Chamorro Pascual, esta instalacin se coloc en 1998 con motivo de la peatonalizacin de Pilotos Regueral. El conjunto est formado por cuatro elementos verticales sumamente estilizados, realizados en acero cortn, a los que coneren alegra algunos detalles en espiral. Un autntico homenaje a las tradicionales choperas leonesas, con una esttica renovadora y contempornea.
SANTO DOMINGO SQUARE / PILOTOS REGUERAL STREET Black Poplars Seen from afar, the small set of trees looks like a minimum volumetric expression on the pavement. However, as one gets closer, the fantastic small wood, just as a metallic oasis in the middle of the city, reaches its maximum signicance. The installation was created by Francisco Chamorro Pascual, and was placed 1998 when Pilotos Regueral Street was adapted for pedestrians use. The set is formed of four, highly stylized vertical elements, made of weathering steel, to which spiral details were attached, conferring cheerfulness to the whole work. It is an authentic homage to the typical Leonese poplars, with renewing and contemporary aesthetics.

PLAZA DE BOTINES San Jorge y el dragn La imagen en piedra de San Jorge lanceando al dragn que corona la puerta de la Casa de Botines es obra de Andrs de Seoane, destacado escultor y restaurador gallego, a partir de un modelo en escayola que realiz Garca Morales en 1955. Por decisin de Gaud, est obra sustituy, en 1956, al original (realizado sobre un vaciado de Lorenzo Matamala y tallado por Antonio Cant), cuya primera versin, a su vez, ya haba sido destruida en 1936. En 1950, al remover la escultura original a causa del deterioro que presentaba la piedra, se encontr oculto en su pedestal un tubo de plomo con dibujos y planos del edicio, fechados en 1891 y rmados por Gaud.

BOTINES SQUARE Saint George and the Dragon The stone image of Saint George plunging the spear into the dragon crowns the doors of Casa de Botines, and it was created by Andrs de Seoane, a prominent Galician sculptor and restorer, who made this from a plaster model by Garca Morales in 1955. Following Gauds decision, the original work was replaced in 1956 (slip cast by Lorenzo Matamala and carved by Antonio Cant) by this one; its rst version had been destroyed in 1936. In 1950, when removing the original sculpture because of the deterioration of the stone a lead tube was found, containing the designs and plans of the building, dating from 1891 and signed by Gaud.

PALACIO DE LOS GUZMANES Warriors In the 1950s, the Galician restorer Andrs de Seoane made the copies of the two warriors that replaced the original work (in deterioration) and that guard the main entrance of the 16th century palace, at present the oce of Len Provincial Parliament.

PALACIO DE LOS GUZMANES Obispo Juan Quiones y Guzmn Escultura de bulto redondo realizada por Valentn Yugueros en 1973, situada a la entrada del Palacio de Los Guzmanes. Una pieza muy sencilla en su composicin, con un tratamiento realista, que combina la piedra con el bronce. La obra est dedicada al obispo Quiones y Guzmn, quien en 1560 encarg la construccin de este palacio al arquitecto Rodrigo Gil de Hontan. Cabe destacar que, en los aos 70, Valentn Yugeros particip adems en la reconstruccin de temas herldicos y relieves de este edicio que hoy es sede de la Diputacin de Len.
PALACIO DE LOS GUZMANES Bishop Juan Quiones y Guzmn This round-shaped statue by Valentin Yugueros, made in 1973, was placed at the entrance of Palacio de los Guzmanes. From the point of view of its composition, it is a very simple piece, which combines stone with bronze. The work is consecrated to the bishop Quiones y Guzmn, who commissioned architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontan the construction of this palace in 1560. It is worth to highlight that, in the 1970s Valentin Yugueros took part in the reconstruction of the heraldic themes and relieves of this building, which is nowadays the oce of the Provincial Parliament of Len.

PLAZA DE BOTINES Antoni Gaud sentado en un banco (en compaa de las palomas) Obra de Jos Luis Fernndez sobre la gura del arquitecto emblemtico del modernismo, Antoni Gaud. La pieza, fundida en bronce en 1998, se ubic desde el primer momento frente a la fachada de la Casa de Botines, uno de los escasos proyectos realizados por Gaud fuera de Catalua. Se trata de una escultura de tipo realista, que se combina con cierto hiperrealismo en el banco y un curioso enfoque sinttico en las formas en el caso de la paloma. Como pieza ornamental funciona muy bien, sobre todo con los turistas, que aprovechan para fotograarse junto al genial arquitecto cataln.
PLAZA DE BOTINES SQUARE Antoni Gaud seating on a bench (with pigeons) This piece, by Jos Luis Fernndez, deals with the most representative modernist architect, Antoni Gaud. The piece, cast in bronze in 1998, was placed from the beginning in front of Casa de Botines, one of the few projects by Gaud outside Catalonia. It is a realist sculpture, somehow hyperrealist regarding the bench, and presenting also a curious synthetic approach in the shape of the pigeons. It works really well as an ornamental item, especially with tourists, who take the opportunity to have a photograph with the magnicent Catalan architect.

PLAZA DE SAN MARCELO Len, ciudad bimilenaria El artista leons Juan Carlos Ponga tard casi tres aos en realizar las tres maquetas de bronce que conmemoran los dos mil aos de existencia de la ciudad de Len. Una de las dos maquetas pequeas reproduce el campamento romano de la Legio VII Gemina que dio origen a la ciudad, y la otra reeja cmo era la ciudad medieval en el siglo X, cuando el viejo Reino tuvo aqu su Corte. La maqueta ms grande recrea la ciudad de Len en el ao 2000, con sus distintos barrios.
PLAZA DE SAN MARCELO SQUARE Len, a two thousand-year city It took almost three years for Leonese artist Juan Carlos Ponga to sculpt the three bronze scale models that commemorate Lens two-thousandth anniversary. One of the two small scale models represents the Roman Legio VII camp that originated the city; the other one portrays how the medieval city was in the 10th century, when the ancient Kingdom settled its Court here. The biggest scale model depicts the City of Len in the year 2000, with its dierent neighbourhoods.

CATEDRAL / FACHADA Virgen Blanca La copia de la Virgen Blanca que sustituy al original en la fachada de la Catedral fue realizada por Andrs de Seoane. En su da se decidi sustituir la escultura original (que data de 1456 y actualmente se conserva en una de las capillas del templo gtico) por motivos de seguridad y para protegerla de la contaminacin y las inclemencias del tiempo. La obra de Seoane est considerada como un trabajo perfecto de copista.
CATHEDRAL / FAADE White Virgin This copy of the White Virgin by Andrs de Seoane replaced the original on the faade of the Cathedral. The original sculpture dates back to 1456 and is currently exhibited in one of the chapels of the Gothic temple. It was replaced for security reasons, and in order to protect it from the pollution and the harshness of the weather. Seoanes work is deemed as a perfect copy work.

PLAZA DE LA CATEDRAL Homenaje a los Constructores de Catedrales Esta obra del leons Juan Carlos Uriarte se coloc en 1997, cuando se peatonaliz la plaza, y rinde homenaje a los vidrieros, canteros y herreros que participaron en la construccin de la Pulchra Leonina. Realizada en bronce fundido, la obra se encuentra plagada de detalles simblicos en los que conviene jarse despacio. En conjunto dibuja la silueta de un hombre Nicols Francs, autor del retablo de la catedral leonesa, sobre la que se han ido depositando las imaginarias manos de los constructores annimos del templo. Rodeando la obra, inscrito en el pavimento, destaca un laberinto de mrmol que, de alguna manera, recuerda el laberinto inicitico que exista en las catedrales gticas francesas.
CATHEDRAL SQUARE Homage to the Workers of the Cathedral This piece by the Leonese Juan Carlos Uriarte was placed here in 1997, when the square was adapted for pedestrians use. It is a tribute to the glaziers, stoneworkers and blacksmiths who took part in the construction of the Pulchra Leonina, as the Cathedral is known. Cast in bronze, the work is teeming with symbolic details worth to observe quietly. The whole work outlines the silhouette of a man Nicols Francs, creator of the altarpiece of the cathedral on which the imaginary hands of the anonymous workers have been settled. Surrounding the work, on the pavement, a marble labyrinth stands out. This labyrinth could remind us of the initial labyrinth of French Gothic cathedrals.

PLAZA DE LA CATEDRAL Padre e hijo Esta pareja hiperrealista es obra de Jess Trapote Medina. Realizada en bronce, se instal en la plaza de la Catedral en 1997, provocando no pocas crticas y una intensa polmica, tanto en el mbito artstico como en el social, ya que la escultura, de escaso valor plstico, tan slo parece cumplir un objetivo meramente ornamental. Sin embargo, se trata de una de las piezas ms populares entre los turistas, que gustan de sacarse fotografas junto a este padre y su hijo que, de alguna manera, respectivamente simbolizan el pasado y el futuro.
PLAZA DE LA CATEDRAL Father and Son This hyperrealist couple is Jess Trapote Medinas work. Made of bronze, it was installed in the Cathedral Square in 1997, raising a lot of critics and an intense controversy, both in the artistic and the social realms, since this sculpture, of scarce aesthetic value, only seems to play an ornamental role. However, it is one of the most popular pieces among tourists, who like taking photographs with this father and his son, who may symbolize, respectively, the past and the future.

PLAZA DE LA CATEDRAL / DETRS DE LA GIROLA Sin ttulo Ubicada en la parte trasera del templo gtico, en el pavimento que rodea la girola, esta pieza de Mariano Dez Senz de Miera parece que busca pasar desapercibida, y prcticamente lo consigue. Su autor, arquitecto conservador de la Catedral leonesa, quiso hacer un pequeo homenaje a Oteiza y trabaj con lminas metlicas hasta conformar una estructura vertical, de carcter abstracto, que el tiempo parece ir oxidando. En comparacin con el impresionante monumento que le brinda su sombra, esta pieza colocada aqu en los ltimos aos del siglo XX resulta de un minimalismo intrigante, contemporneo y peculiar.
CATHEDRAL SQUARE / BEHIND THE AMBULATORY No title Located behind the Gothic temple, on the pavement surrounding its ambulatory, this piece by Mariano Dez Senz de Miera seems to intend to go unnoticed. And it practically achieves it. Its author, an architect-preserver of the Cathedral of Len, wanted to pay a humble homage to Oteiza, and worked with metal sheets to shape them into a vertical, abstract structure, seemingly rust by time. Compared to the impressive monument that provides it with a shadow, this piece set here in the late 20th century is of an intriguing, contemporary and peculiar minimalism.

INSTITUTO LEONS DE CULTURA / PATIO Maternidad Deliciosa obra del escultor astorgano Marino Amaya que representa a una madre sosteniendo amorosamente a su pequeo hijo. Una pieza llena de armona, muy equilibrada en sus lneas curvas, como suele ser habitual en este artista del que se pueden contemplar otras obras en Len. Durante muchos aos esta pequea escultura estuvo colocada en el antiguo Hospicio de San Cayetano, antes de encontrar asiento en el patio del Instituto Leons de Cultura.
LEONESE INSTITUTE OF CULTURE / YARD Motherhood This is a wonderful work by the Astorga-born sculptor Marino Amaya, which represents a mother lovingly holding her small child. The piece is full of harmony, balanced in its curving lines, as usually happens with this artist, from whom other works can be contemplated in Len. This small sculpture was displayed for many years in the former San Cayetano orphanage, being afterwards placed in the yard of the Leonese Institute of Culture.

INSTITUTO LEONS DE CULTURA / PATIO Monumento dedicado a Fray Bernardino de Sahagn El artista vallisoletano Jess Trapote Medina realiz esta pieza en 1990 para la Diputacin de Len, con motivo del IV centenario de la muerte de Fray Bernardino. La obra, que se mantiene en su lugar original, a la intemperie, est formada por un muro de acero cortn y la gura en piedra de Fray Bernardino fraile nacido en Sahagn que pas parte de su vida en Mxico y lleg a ser un gran conocedor de la cultura maya. El contraste de color entre ambos elementos (acero y piedra) potencia la gura del personaje que, partiendo de una concepcin gurativa, ofrece un tratamiento muy esquemtico, con una potenciacin evidente del volumen.
LEONESE INTITUTE OF CULTURE / YARD Fray Bernardino de Sahagn Memorial Valladolid-born artist Jess Trapote Medina did this piece in 1990 for Len Provincial Parliament, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Fray Bernardinos death. The work, still in its original place in the open air, is composed of a wall of weathering steel and the stone gure of Fray Bernardino. The friar was born in the village of Sahagn; he spent part of his life in Mexico and was very knowledgeable on the Mayan culture. The colour contrast of the elements (steel and stone) favours the outline of the gure, a gurative conception which oers a schematic treatment, with an evident development of volume.

La familia | Manuel Dez Rolln
CALLE BURGO NUEVO La Familia Conjunto realizado por el leons Manuel Dez Rolln en 1992, cuando se convirti esta calle en peatonal. El artista opt por su elaboracin en chapa de acero soldada y tratada con pintura. Con una concepcin muy geomtrica del volumen, el escultor logra dar forma a las tres guras combinando cilindros, paraleleppedos y ovoides, con un resultado esttico y fro. La informacin narrativa de la pieza se concentra en su parte delantera, y la denicin de los miembros de la familia viene dada por la incorporacin de mnimos elementos, arquetpicos y tpicos.
BURGO NUEVO STREET The Family Set of works created in 1992 by the Leonese artist Manuel Dez Rolln, when this street was adapted for pedestrians use. The artist chose to elaborate it with welded steel sheet, treated with pigment. With a highly geometric conception of volume, the sculptor achieves the shaping of the three gures by combining the parallelepiped and ovoid cylinders, provoking a static and cold impression. The narrative information is concentrated in the frontal part, whereas the denition of the members of the family is given by the incorporation of minimal archetypical and trite elements.

Arco viajero | Corinne Van Bergen
PLAZA TORRES DE OMAA Arco Viajero Monumental escultura diseada por la artista holandesa Corinne Van Bergen, quien entre 1998 y 2002 particip en el proyecto El espacio inventado, promovido por la Galera Trco de Arte, con el objetivo de difundir el arte pblico. La pieza representa una puerta arco que anuncia un tiempo nuevo, sin lmites ni fronteras, y supone un nuevo hito referencial al Camino de Santiago en el espacio urbano leons. El trnsito que implica el Camino aparece simbolizado en la disposicin de los dos enormes pilares, que sugieren, frente al estatismo propio de la pieza, un cierto movimiento o desplazamiento lento del arco por la supercie de la plaza.
TORRES DE OMAA SQUARE Travellers Arch Monumental sculpture designed by the Dutch artist Corinne Van Bergen, who, between 1998 and 2002 took part in the project El espacio inventado (The invented space), organized by Trco de Arte Gallery, aiming at spreading public art. The piece represents an arch door that announces new times, with neither limits nor borders, and it implies a new referential landmark in the Road to Santiago for Lens urban space. The transit that the Road implies is symbolized in the disposition of the two big pillars, suggesting, as opposed to the immobility proper to the piece, some sort of slow movement of the arch throughout the area of the square.

JARDN DEL CID / EXTERIOR Figura sentada con pjaro muerto Sugerente creacin de Amancio Gonzlez Andrs, fechada en 1998, y que alguien ha denido como un verdadero canto potico a la amistad. Realizada en bronce, esta pieza de ms de dos metros de altura estuvo instalada varios aos en el Museo Evaristo Valle de Gijn hasta que se decidi su denitivo traslado a Len. Se trata de una obra de gran potencia expresiva, con una fuerte intencionalidad potica, en la lnea expresionista de este joven artista leons que, desde 1985, no ha parado de evolucionar y de explorar nuevas vas en el campo de la escultura.
CID GARDEN / OUTSIDE Seating gure with a dead bird This is a suggesting and beautiful creation by Amancio Gonzlez Andrs, dating from 1998, which was dened as a true poem to the friendship. This piece, cast in bronze and measuring more than 6 feet, was exhibited for several years at Gijns Evaristo Valle Museum, until it was denitely translated to Len. This is a work of great expressivity, of a strong poetic intensity, expressioniststyled, coming from this young Leonese artist, who, since 1985 hasnt stopped developing and exploring new ways in the eld of sculpture.

JARDN DEL CID / INTERIOR Busto de ngel Barja Muy cerca de la casa donde vivi el msico leons de origen gallego ngel Barja (1938-1987) se ha colocado un busto en su memoria, realizado por Muiz Alique en 1993. La ciudad de Len a sus msicos, reza el grabado sobre la piedra que lo sostiene. El escultor le ha dado un tratamiento realista al rostro, dentro de un esquema hiertico y frontal.

JARDN DEL CID / INTERIOR Busto de Felipe Magdaleno Dedicado a otro msico leons del siglo XX, Felipe Magdaleno (1928-1983), este busto lleva tambin la rma de Muiz Alique y se instal en 1993 en un rincn del jardn romntico para rendir homenaje a la memoria de este organista, musiclogo y compositor nacido en Castroverde de Campos (Zamora). Felipe Magdaleno lleg a ser cannigo y Maestro de Capilla de la Colegiata de San Isidoro, donde fund la Coral Isidoriana que dirigi hasta su muerte.
CID GARDEN / INSIDE Bust of Felipe Magdaleno Consecrated to another 20th-century Leonese musician, Felipe Magdaleno (1928-1983), this bust is also a work by Muiz Alique, and was placed in 1993 in a spot of the romantic garden in order to pay homage to this organist, musicologist and composer born in Castroverde de Campos (province of Zamora). Felipe Magdaleno was a canon and a master of the chapel of Colegiata de San Isidoro, where he founded the Coral Isidoriana which he directed until his dead.

PLAZA DE SAN ISIDORO Las Cabezadas Realizada por el asturiano Jos Luis Fernndez en la dcada de los 90, la pieza incorpora una temtica tradicional muy leonesa, sobre una histrica costumbre que se ha convertido en todo un rito anual. La ceremonia a la que rinde homenaje se celebra el ltimo domingo de abril, como agradecimiento al ruego de lluvia implorado a San Isidoro por el pueblo leons en 1158. Los representantes de la Corporacin Municipal, en traje de gala, y los del Cabildo Isidoriano se saludan con respectivas inclinaciones de cabeza y discuten sobre si la entrega de un cirio al abad de San Isidoro, por parte de un miembro del Ayuntamiento, es foro u oferta.
SAN ISIDORO SQUARE Head bowings This sculpture from the 1990s by the Asturian Jos Luis Fernndez deals with a very typical subject in Len, a historical tradition that has become an annual ritual. It is a tribute to a ceremony that takes place on the last Sunday of April, as a thanksgiving to the pray for rain that the Leonese people made to San Isidoro in 1158. The representatives of the municipal organism, in their gala suits, and those of the Isidoro congregation, greet each other by bowing their heads and start debating whether the giving of a candle to San Isidoros abbot by a member of the City Council is foro u oferta, that is to say, an obligation or something made willingly.

Fuente de la Legin | Mariano Salvatierra e Isidro Cruela
PLAZA DE SAN ISIDORO Fuente de la Legin La fontana de la plaza data de 1787 y es obra de Isidro Cruela, quien en esa epoca construy otras fuentes monumentales en la ciudad. En sta se observa un len que sostiene un trozo de columna soberana, adornada con el escudo de la ciudad, con la inscripcin: LEG VII GEM. Es un homenaje al igual que la prominente columna que en 1968 se levant justo en el otro extremo de la plaza a la Legio VII Gemina, a la que generalmente se atribuye la fundacin de la ciudad en la poca romana. La gura original del len fue elaborada por el escultor Mariano Salvatierra, y rehecha muchos aos despus por Andrs Seoane.
SAN ISIDORO SQUARE Fountain of the Legion The fountain in the square dates from 1787 and it is Isidro Cruelas work, who was also the creator of other monumental fountains in the city. A lion rests on a pillar, which is ornamented with the citys coat of arms, together with the inscription LEG VII GEM. Just as the prominent column which was raised on the other side of the square in 1968, this is an homage to the Roman Legio VII Gemina, to which the foundation of Len is attributed, in the times of the Roman Empire. The original gure was sculpted by Mariano Salvatierra, being reproduced many years later by Andrs Seoane.

Homenaje a las Infantas de Len | Mara Salud Prada Morolln
CALLE RAMN Y CAJAL Homenaje a las Infantas de Len Monumento realizado por Mara Salud Parada Morolln en 2002. El conjunto escultrico se coloc inicialmente ante la fachada principal de San Isidoro, lo que provoc fuertes crticas en la ciudad y motiv un cambio inmediato de ubicacin. Al nal, se decidi dejar la pieza en la plazoleta situada entre las escaleras y la rampa que conducen a la Colegiata romnica. Formada por tres estilizadas guras femeninas que representan a Doa Sancha y a sus hijas, Doa Elvira y Doa Urraca (fallecidas en 1101), la obra intenta conjugar guracin y abstraccin.
RAMN Y CAJAL STREET Homage to Lens Infantas This monument was created by Mara Salud Parada Morolln in 2002. The sculpture composition was initially placed in front of the principal San Isidoros faade, resulting in a controversy which provoked its immediate change to another place. The piece was nally located in the small square situated between the staircase and the ramp leading to the Romanesque Colegiata. Composed of three stylized feminine gures which represent Sancha and her daughters Elvira and Urraca (dead in 1101), this work tries to combine gurative and abstract art.

RUZ DE SALAZAR STREET La Lola Lolo Zapico, from the region of Laciana, is the creator of this work, which was a gift to the City of Len by Manuel Quijano, the father of the music trio Caf Quijano, and his family. It is a tribute to a bizarre woman leading a sad life, who inspired one of the most popular hits by the Leonese trio.

Un busto fro, hiertico y frontal, en el que el escultor ha trabajado sobre las facciones de este escritor leons del siglo XVIII, autor de Fray Gerundio de Campazas.
FEVE TRAIN STATION / OUTDOOR GARDEN Bust of Father Isla In the base of this bust by Muiz Alique there is a legend that reads: Lens City Council homage to Father Isla in the 200th anniversary of his death. Len, 1982. A cold, hieratic and frontal bust, on which the sculptor worked the face features of this 18th century Leonese writer, author of the book Fray Gerundio de Campazas.

Fuente del Mercado | Flix Cusac e Isidro Cruela
PLAZA DEL GRANO Fuente del Mercado La escultura de esta hermosa fuente de Isidro Cruela es una creacin artstica de Flix Cusac. Ubicada en el centro de la histrica Plaza del Grano, que durante siglos fue testigo del mercado del pan y del grano, la fuente se construy en 1789. Se compone de pedestal, sobre el que se sita una columna rematada por el escudo de Len. Abrazados a ella aparecen representados dos robustos nios que simbolizan los ros Toro y Bernesga. A pocos pasos, un crucero restaurado recientemente, cuyo original data de 1889, marca el lugar donde, segn la tradicin, apareci una imagen de la Virgen, un 9 de febrero del lejano ao 560.
PLAZA DEL GRANO SQUARE Market Fountain This beautiful fountain by Isidro Cruela presents an artistic creation by Flix Cusac. Located in the centre of the historical Plaza del Grano, which was for centuries a witness of bread and grain market, this fountain was built in 1789. A pedestal supports a column with the coat of arms of the City of Len. There are two robust boys embracing the column, representing rivers Toro and Bernesga. Very close to it, there is a stone cross recently restored, originally from 1889, which signals the place where, according to tradition, an image of the Virgin appeared, on February 9th in the faraway year of 560.

PARQUE DE LA CHANTRA Homenaje a los Donantes de Sangre Esta enorme pieza del escultor maragato Marino Amaya fue ejecutada a nales de la dcada de los 90. El conjunto est formado por dos guras de bronce, sobre un soporte de piedra en forma de cruz, en una formalizacin armnica muy sinttica y esquemtica. La curva aparece como elemento clave de la composicin, aportando un cierto movimiento pendular al conjunto. Un aspecto que destaca siempre en las creaciones de este artista es su perfecta concepcin de la obra tridimensional y la capacidad para generar composiciones plsticas que cuentan con una visin de 360 grados.
CHANTRA PARK Homage to Blood Donors This huge piece by Maragatera-born artist Marino Amaya was created in the late 1990s. The set is composed of two bronze gures, standing on a cross-shaped stone support, achieving a synthetic and schematic composition. Curves appear as a key element in the composition, giving to it some sort of smooth movement. An aspect always present in this artists creations is his perfect conception of works in three dimensions, and his capacity to generate compositions which can be seen at 360 degrees.

PARQUE DE LA CHANTRA Homenaje al Negrilln de Boar Obra del leons Manuel Dez Rolln, realizada en 1994. La escultura se sita sobre una especie de pdium formado por rocas alineadas irregularmente que se asientan, a su vez, sobre el csped del jardn, produciendo una integracin de elementos y una cierta sensacin de elevacin. Sobre las rocas, el artista ha colocado una estructura metlica a la que ha aplicado un tratamiento que anula los brillos, y que funciona como una silueta. Una obra sencilla y esquemtica que, en la actualidad, no se puede contemplar de forma ptima por la inadecuada colocacin de rboles en su entorno.
CHANTRA PARK Homage to Negrilln de Boar This piece was created in 1994 by the Leonese artist Manuel Dez Rolln. The sculpture is placed on a podium composed of rocks which have been irregularly aligned. These rocks are on the lawn of the garden, and all this setting results in the integration of elements and a feeling of elevation. On the rocks, the artist has placed a metallic structure which has been treated in a way that its bright is dimmed, and which takes the appearance of a silhouette. It is a simple and schematic work, which cannot be perfectly contemplated because of the inappropriate disposition of the trees.

JARDN DE SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco de Ass De 1987 data esta escultura de ngel Muiz Alique, y que no es sino un pequeo homenaje al santo que amaba a los animales, San Francisco de Ass, que tambin da nombre a la iglesia aledaa. El santo aparece representado con un lobo, una oveja y una paloma, y en el pedestal de piedra sobre el que se sostiene han sido grabadas pequeas escenas y una jaculatoria: Alabado seas mi Seor por todas tus criaturas.
SAN FRANCISCO GARDEN Saint Francis of Assisi This sculpture by ngel Muiz Alique dates from 1987 and is a humble homage to the saint who loved animals, Saint Francis of Assisi, after whom the nearby church was named. The saint is portrayed with a wolf, a sheep and a pigeon. On the small pedestal supporting the piece, there are carvings representing dierent scenes, as well as an inscription that reads: May You be gloried, my Lord, for all your Creatures.

Fuente de Neptuno | Mariano Salvatierra e Isidro Cruela
JARDN DE SAN FRANCISCO Fuente de Neptuno Esta fuente histrica y monumental data del siglo XVIII y es una obra del arquitecto Isidro Cruela, ejecutada por Flix Cusac y Jos Velasco. La preside una estatua de Neptuno sobre un delfn, con tridente en la mano izquierda y jarra de agua en la derecha. Rodeando el conjunto, tres tritones se sitan sobre otros tantos pedestales, portando gansos como oferta al dios. El conjunto escultrico es obra de Mariano Salvatierra, escultor de la Catedral de Toledo. Cuando se construy esta fuente, en 1789, se coloc en la Plaza de la Catedral. En 1913 se aprob su desmonte, con el argumento de que impeda contemplar la belleza del templo gtico, y en 1931 se traslad a la Plaza Mayor, donde permaneci hasta 1943.
SAN FRANCISCO GARDEN Neptune Fountain This historical and monumental fountain dates from the 18th century and is a work by the architect Isidro Cruela, realized by Flix Cusac and Jos Velasco. It is crowned by a statue of Neptune on a dolphin, with a trident in his left hand and a water jar in the right one. Surrounding this composition, there are three tritons on their pedestals holding geese as an oer to the god. The sculpture composition is Mariano Salvatierras, a sculptor from Toledo Cathedral. When this fountain was built, in 1789, it was initially placed in the cathedrals square. Its translation was approved in 1913, with the argument that it blocked the sight of the marvellous gothic temple. It was translated in 1931 to the Plaza Mayor, where it remained until 1943.

PARQUE FRENTE AL EDIFICIO DE CORREOS Busto dedicado al historiador Snchez Albornoz Realizado por la escultora Cristina Carreo, se coloc en 1985 en el pequeo parque situado frente al edicio de Correos y el Conservatorio. El busto, un bronce de mediana dimensin, no ofrece demasiado inters artstico. Sirve para recordar al intelectual madrileo Claudio Snchez Albornoz (18931984), presidente del Gobierno Republicano en el exilio. En 1984 Snchez Albornoz fue nombrado hijo adoptivo de la provincia de Len, a la que en su da dedic un famoso libro, Estampas de la vida en Len durante el siglo X.
PARK IN FRONT OF THE POST OFFICE Bust of the historian Snchez Albornoz This work by the sculptor Cristina Carreo was placed in the small park located in front of the Post Oce and the Conservatory in 1985. The mid-size bronze bust is not of great artistic value. It is only a memorial to the Madrid-born intellectual Claudio Snchez Albornoz (1893-1984), president of the Republic government in exile. In 1984 Snchez Albornoz was named adopted child of the City of Len, to which he consecrated a famous book called Stamps of Lens Life in the 10th Century.

PABELLN EL ALBITAR / PATIO INTERIOR Figura que parece pensar A la entrada del Pabelln El Albitar (antigua Facultad de Veterinaria), esta dramtica gura de Mariano Navares, realizada en 2003, hace referencia a un mismo tema: el Homo Consumens. Navares despoja al personaje de sus atributos humanos para mostrar su degeneracin. Para ello utiliza chatarra y otros desechos metlicos que conservan el aspecto de su ltimo uso (latas, piezas de coches, materiales ferroviarios...) y que, remodelados, recuperan parte de su utilidad para convertirse en denuncia, en smbolo y, an ms, en obra de arte.
EL ALBITAR PAVILION / INDOOR YARD A Figure seemingly thinking At the entrance of El Albitar (former Faculty of Veterinary), this tragic gure by Mariano Navares, done in 2003, is a reference to the Homo Consumens. Navaro denudes the character of its human attributes in order to show its degeneration. To achieve this, he employs scrap and other metal wastes that still preserve the aspect of its former function (cans, car pieces, railway materials...) which, once remodelled, recover part of their functionality to become a denounce, a symbol, and even more, a work of art.

PABELLN EL ALBITAR / PATIO INTERIOR Obrero n 0516 y Obrero n 0517 Otra pieza del escultor de Miranda de Ebro Mariano Navares, un artista que, con su manera de trabajar, quiere reivindicar la libertad artstica y transmitir una actitud vital ecolgica y anticonsumista. En esta obra realizada en 2001, y que lleva la inscripcin (V=p x t) relativa a que el trabajo (V) es igual a potencia (p) por tiempo (t), los dos obreros portan grandes maletas y de alguna manera han sido despojados de su condicin humana.
EL ALBITAR PAVILION / INDOOR YARD Worker n 0516 and Worker n 0517 This is yet another piece by the sculptor from Miranda del Ebro Mariano Navares. This artist, with his work style, wants to vindicate artistic freedom and transmit a vital ecological and anti-consumer attitude. This work, dating from 2001, holds the inscription (V= p x t), meaning that work (V) equals power (p) by time (t). The two workers carry big luggages and seem to have been denuded in some way of their human condition.

UNIVERSIDAD DE LEN / CAMPUS DE VEGAZANA Don Quijote en Sierra Morena Esta escultura fue encargada en 1964 por la Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Len a Vctor de los Ros. Al principio se coloc en el Alto del Portillo, y all permaneci durante aos. Posteriormente se traslad al Campus de Vegazana. Realizada en piedra de Seplveda, mide casi cinco metros de altura y la visin de cerca es espectacular. Se encuadra dentro de una guracin tradicional con un cierto tratamiento expresionista que potencia el sentido narrativo de la obra. Describe un momento literario de la obra de Cervantes en el que aparece Don Quijote en Sierra Morena, sentado en una roca sin su armadura y medio desnudo, meditando, ensimismado en la gura de Amads de Gaula.
UNIVERSITY OF LEN / VEGAZANA CAMPUS Quixote in Sierra Morena Vctor de los Ros was commissioned this sculpture in 1964 by Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad (a Spanish bank). It was initially placed in the Alto del Portillo (a highland near Len), and it remained there for years. Then, it was translated to Vegazana Campus. This sculpture made of stone from Seplveda measures almost 16.40 feet, and if you stand close to it, its sight is impressing. It belongs to the realm of traditional gurativeness, with a somehow expressionist treatment which powers the narrative sense of the work. It describes a literary moment in the work of Cervantes, in which Quixote is in Sierra Morena, seating on a rock without his armour and half-naked, thoughtfully reecting on Amads de Gaula.

UNIVERSIDAD DE LEN / CAMPUS DE VEGAZANA Johnny Saurius Legionense El artista leons Juan Carlos Uriarte ha utilizado hierro, unido a piezas industriales reutilizadas, para realizar esta pieza que representa el esqueleto de una especie de dinosaurio, y que se coloc frente a la entrada de la Facultad de Biologa en 1989. La articulacin y reciclaje de diferentes elementos de maquinaria industrial conguran una especie de metfora en referencia directa a la ms pura tradicin dadasta y surrealista, al generar una imagen orgnica y animal a travs de lo inorgnico e industrial. La obra desaparece ante la mirada, convirtindose en una simple lnea vertical, cuando el ojo se enfrenta a la cabeza del supuesto esqueleto del dinosaurio.
UNIVERSITY OF LEN / VEGAZANA CAMPUS Johnny Saurius Legionense The Leonese artist Juan Carlos Uriarte used iron, together with recycled industrial pieces, in order to achieve this work that represents the skeleton of a dinosaur species, located in front of the entrance of the Faculty of Biology since 1989. The combination and recycling of dierent elements of industrial machinery is somehow a direct metaphor of the purest Dadaist and Surrealist tradition, as it generates an organic, living image from inorganic, industrial elements. The work disappears to the sight, turning into a simple vertical line, if you stand in front of the head of the would-be dinosaur skeleton.

UNIVERSIDAD DE LEN / CAMPUS DE VEGAZANA Sin ttulo Escultura de Jess Pombo de los Arcos, ubicada en los jardines de la Facultad de Filosofa y Letras, junto a la entrada del edicio. Realizada en los aos 80, esta pieza surge de la utilizacin de un plano de chapa metlica que, por medio de pliegues y cortes, origina un volumen cerrado. El plano y el elemento curvo regular se convierten en los protagonistas de una composicin muy estable. Su ubicacin no es demasiado buena, y si se eliminara el pdium que la sustenta (ajeno al proyecto del artista) y la pieza de acero rompiera directamente sobre el csped, la escultura mejorara de forma sustancial.
UNIVERSITY OF LEN / VEGAZANA CAMPUS No title This sculpture by Jess Pombo de los Arcos is placed in the gardens of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, next to the entrance to the building. The work, made in the 1980s, results from a metallic sheet which, by means of bents and cuts, originates a closed volume. The plane surface and the curving, regular element acquire the main role in this highly stable composition. It has not been properly installed, though. If the podium supporting the work, which is not part of the artists project, were eliminated, and the steel piece broke directly into the lawn, the sculpture would be substantially enhanced.

UNIVERSIDAD DE LEN / CAMPUS DE VEGAZANA Piedra de Boar Conjunto conmemorativo realizado por el artista napolitano Vinicio Momoli, instalado en los jardines existentes entre las Facultades de Filosofa y Biolgicas, delante de la cafetera. Dos bloques polidricos, realizados en piedra de Boar, se sitan simtricamente con respecto a un eje vertical. En uno de los bloques aparece el vaciado material y frontal de una silueta que sugiere el torso esquemtico de una gura humana. La potencia expresiva y volumtrica del bloque de piedra alude a la grandeza de la naturaleza. Pero la sutil silueta en su parte inferior habla tambin de la tensin del ser humano por alcanzar el conocimiento y de su necesaria y conictiva relacin con el mundo natural.
UNIVERSITY OF LEN / VEGAZANA CAMPUS Stone from Boar This commemorative composition by the artist Vinicio Momoli, from Naples, was installed in the gardens between the faculties of Philosophy and Biology, in front of the cafeteria. Two polyhedrons made of stone from Boar are symmetrically placed with respect to a vertical axis. In one of the blocks there is a frontal carving of a silhouette which suggests the schematic torso of a human being. The expressive and enormous power of this stone block is a reference to natures greatness. But the subtle silhouette below also deals with the tension of the human being to achieve knowledge and with its necessary and troublesome relation with natural world.

UNIVERSIDAD DE LEN / CAMPUS DE VEGAZANA La otra orilla Obra realizada in situ, en el jardn entre Filosofa y Biolgicas, por el reconocido escultor argentino Ral Fernndez Olivi. Se inaugur en julio de 2004, tras casi dos meses de trabajo por parte del artista. El resultado es una pieza de cemento muy emotiva, que en cierto modo plantea el reencuentro entre Argentina y Espaa. El ttulo hace referencia a la cultura y al hecho artstico como elementos fundamentales de interrelacin y de encuentro. Pero La otra orilla, representada por ese ro o mar que nos separa, tambin supone una metfora muy potica de la emigracin, el trnsito, el viaje, la distancia...
UNIVERSITY OF LEN / VEGAZANA CAMPUS The Other Shore This work was done on the spot, in the garden between the faculties of Philosophy and Biology, by the renowned Argentinean artist Ral Fernndez Olivi. It was inaugurated in July 2004, after almost two months of work. The result is a deeply touching cement piece, which somehow represents the reunion of Argentina and Spain. The title is a reference to culture and art as fundamental elements within cross-relation and reunion. As well, The Other Shore, represented by that river or sea that separates us, also implies a highly poetic metaphor of migration, trac, travel, distance...

ANEXO 1 PARQUE ESCULTRICO DE LA DIPUTACIN DE LEN: MONTE SAN ISIDRO

Tres escultores leoneses y una artista maragata sern los primeros en exhibir sus obras el Parque Escultrico proyectado por la Diputacin de Len (a travs del Instituto Leons de Cultura) en el Monte San Isidro, a las afueras de la ciudad: Juan Villoria, ganador del Premio de Escultura Pblica del ILC; Juan Carlos Uriarte, Jos Luis Casas y Castorina.
Est previsto que este Parque Escultrico abra sus puertas en plena naturaleza durante la primavera de 2007, con el objetivo de sacar a la luz parte de los fondos escultricos de la Diputacin y tambin para que se conozca un poco ms a los escultores de esta tierra. Las obras se dispondrn a lo largo de un sendero que atraviesa de un lado a otro el Monte San Isidro (ubicado en el kilmetro 3,6 de la Carretera de Carbajal, nada ms pasar el antiguo Hospicio de San Cayetano). Aunque en una primera fase slo sern cuatro los artistas presentes en este nuevo museo al aire libre, el proyecto de la Diputacin contempla ir incrementando el nmero de creadores y de piezas a lo largo de los aos.
ANNEXE 1 SCULPTURAL PARK OF LEN PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT: MONTE SAN ISIDRO

Three sculptors from Len and another one from Maragatera will be the rst ones to exhibit their works in the Sculptural Park planned by Lens Parliament (through the Leonese Institute of Culture) at Monte San Isidro, in the outskirts of the city: Juan Villoria, winner of the ILC Public Sculpture Contest; Juan Carlos Uriarte, Jos Luis Casas and Castorina.
This Sculptural Park is expected to open its doors in the middle of nature in spring 2007, with the aim to bring to light part of the sculpture treasure of the Parliament and also to give an impulse to the sculptors of this place. The works will be displayed throughout a lane that crosses Monte San Isidro (located at kilometre number 3.6 of Carbajal Road, after the former orphanage San Cayetano). Although in the rst phase of the project there will only be four artists in this new open-air museum, the Parliaments project is to raise the number of creators and pieces year by year.

Desencuentro | Jos Luis Casas Paramio
Desencuentro El joven escultor Jos Luis Casas Paramio juega en esta obra con geometras y volmenes fragmentando el espacio, conjugando integridad y simplicidad. Esta pieza data de 2005, cuando se coloc, de forma provisional, frente a la Casa Botines. La piedra de granito aporta un volumen compacto y denso, en oposicin al acero que en ella se encarna, en una interpretacin libre de la articulacin de volmenes geomtricos. Los materiales utilizados contrastan en su esencia y en su comportamiento (la piedra slida e inmutable, frente al acero hueco y oxidado). De ah el desencuentro, quiz, al que alude el ttulo.
Opposites The young sculptor Jos Luis Casas Paramio plays in this work with geometry and volumes, cutting the space, mixing integrity and simplicity. This piece dates from 2005, when it was provisionally placed in front of the Casa Botines. The granite stone gives the piece a compact and dense volume, in contrast to the steel that reincarnates in it, in a free interpretation of the articulation of geometric volumes. The materials used in this work present a stark contrast in their essences and their reactions (the solid and imperturbable stone as opposed to the hollowed and rust steel). This might be the opposition to which the title makes a reference.

Grgola que mira hacia el sur Asterin El artista Juan Carlos Uriarte aporta dos esculturas a este nuevo espacio expositivo, realizadas en hierro, que representan animales mitolgicos, como los que pueblan las grgolas de la catedral, en un nuevo homenaje a la Pulchra Leonina. Se trata de dos obras que ya se pudieron ver en 2005, en la exposicin que realiz este escultor en la Diputacin, en compaa del pintor Manuel Jular. En este caso, Uriarte ha estudiado cmo adaptar las esculturas al espacio del Monte San Isidro, de modo que miren desde lo alto a los paseantes.

Gargoyle Looking to the South Asterin The artist Juan Carlos Uriarte endows this new exhibition space with two sculptures, made of bronze, representing mythological animals, as those inhabiting the gargoyles of the cathedral, in a new homage to the Pulchra Leonina. These two works had already been shown in 2005, in the exhibition held by this sculptor in the Provincial Parliament, together with the painter Manuel Jular. In this occasion, Uriarte has studied the way to adapt the sculptures to the space in Monte San Isidro, so that they look on pedestrian from the heights.

Trinitas AEqualis | Juan Villoria
Trinitas AEqualis El escultor Juan Villoria ha creado para este nuevo museo una obra titulada Trinitas AEqualis (en latn, Trinidad Igual), conformada por tres grandes piezas de granito. En el momento de realizar esta gua, la obra se encontraba en fase de realizacin. No se trata del mismo proyecto con el que este artista leons obtuvo el Ier Premio de Escultura Pblica del ILC, ya que si bien el premio contemplaba la realizacin de la obra para ser exhibida en este parque, sus grandes dimensiones llevaron a sustituir la pieza galardonada por esta otra de menor tamao.
Trinitas AEqualis The sculptor Juan Villoria has created an original piece called Trinitas AEqualis (in Latin, Equal Trinity), and which is composed of three big pieces of granite. At the moment of the redaction of this guide, the work was yet in the process of realization. Its not the same project which won the 1st ILC Public Sculpture Contest, since although the contest expected this work to be exhibited in this park its big dimensions resulted in the substitution of the awarded piece for this one, which is of a smaller size.

Desnudo La artista astorgana Castorina ha proyectado para este nuevo espacio expositivo una gran escultura en bronce, que se realizar a partir de otra obra original, ms pequea, en la que se representa a una mujer desnuda. La bsqueda de lo ms humano, a travs de lo sencillo y tierno, es una de las constantes en la trayectoria de esta veterana y comprometida escultora. Castorina utiliza temas recurrentes, como la mujer y la maternidad, para crear piezas de gran potencia volumtrica, muy cercanas a la guracin, dotadas de una enorme carga expresiva.
Nude Castorina, an artist from Astorga, has planned for this new exhibition space a great bronze sculpture, which she will make from another smaller original work representing a naked woman. The search for the most human quality, through simplicity and tenderness, is a constant in the trajectory of this mature and committed sculptor. Castorina uses recurring topics, as women and motherhood, to create pieces with a great volumetric power, very close to gurativeness, and endowed with a great expressive touch.

CENTRO DE LEN / BARRIO ROMNTICO El espacio inventado Proyecto promovido por la galera Trco de Arte, con la colaboracin del Ayuntamiento de Len y otras instituciones, en el entorno de la Plaza Torres de Omaa. Desde 1997 se viene desarrollando de forma continuada esta propuesta, a la que distintos artistas han aportado sus sugerentes propuestas. Ao tras ao, y durante unos das, el espacio de este entorno urbano se ve transformado y modicado por medio de una intervencin efmera, generando una nueva realidad creativa. Bruno Marcos, Jurez y Palmero, Corinne van Bergen, Fermn Santos, Yamaoka o Carlos Cuenllas son algunos de los artistas que han participado en este proyecto.
CITY CENTRE / ROMANTIC NEIGHBOURHOOD The Invented Space This project was promoted by Trco de Arte Gallery, with the support of Len City Council and other institutions, in the surroundings of Plaza Torres de Omaa square. This proposal has been developed with no interruptions since 1997, and many artists have ever since contributed with their suggestions. Year by year, and for several days, the space in this part of the city is transformed and modied by means of an ephemeral intervention, generating a new creative reality. Bruno Marcos, Jurez y Palmero, Corinne van Bergen, Fermn Santos, Yamaoka and Carlos Cuenllas are some of the artists who took part in this project.

UNIVERSIDAD / FACULTAD DE FILOSOFA Y LETRAS El hall transformado

Desde 1994, la Facultad de Filosofa y Letras acoge el proyecto denominado El hall transformado, organizado por la Asociacin de Estudiantes de Historia del Arte y comisariado por el profesor Javier Hernando Carrasco, con el objetivo de aproximar al ambiente universitario la actividad artstica actual. Cada ao, durante los meses de febrero y marzo, el hall de Filosofa se ve enriquecido en su percepcin, gracias a la versatilidad y riqueza de propuestas de los creadores participantes. En el saln de actos de esta Facultad se pueden ver fotografas de las distintas intervenciones realizadas, a lo largo de los aos, por artistas como Bruno Marcos, Marcos Parra, scar de Paz, Juarez y Palmero, Ana Cristina Martnez, Gloria Rubio Largo, lvarez Cuenllas, Yamaoka, Juan Galdeano o Virginia Calvo.
UNIVERSITY / FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY AND ARTS The Transformed Hall

Since 1994, the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts has been housing this project, called The Transformed Hall, held by the Students Association of Art History and curated by Professor Javier Hernando Carrasco, with the aim of approaching the current artistic activities to the university medium. Every year, during the months of February and March, the hall of this faculty is enriched in how it is perceived, thanks to the versatility and richness of the proposals of the participants. In the assembly hall of the Faculty, many pictures of the dierent interventions of artists like Bruno Marcos, Marcos Parra, scar de Paz, Jurez y Palmero, Ana Cristina Martnez, Gloria Rubio Largo, lvarez Cuenllas, Yamaoka, Juan Galdeano and Virgina Calvo can be seen.

Bosque de la noche | Salvador Armesto Nez
DEPSITOS DE AGUA DE LA CIUDAD Bosque de la noche El artista Salvador Armesto Nez promovi en 2001 esta intervencin en los depsitos de agua. Su accin implic una actuacin de tipo espacial en un entorno mixto, entre lo urbano y lo natural, a las afueras de la ciudad (carretera de Carbajal). Integrando volumen y pintura, el espacio sumamente degradado de los depsitos acuferos sufri una autntica transformacin, recuperando su valor como elemento de arqueologa industrial. Dos bosques uno de rboles blancos dedicado al Sol, y otro de rboles azules dedicado a la Luna recorren en forma de friso los enormes depsitos cilndricos, introduciendo importantes cambios de escala en la percepcin visual.
CITY WATER DEPOSITORY Woods of the night The artist Salvador Armesto Nez promoted in 2001 this artistic intervention in the water depository. His action implied working in a mixed background, between the city and nature (Carbajal Road). With this work, which integrates volume and painting, the ruined space of the water depository went through a sea change, recovering its value as an element of industrial architecture. Two woods one with white trees, consecrated to the Sun, and the other one with blue trees consecrated to the Moon are arranged as a frieze in the huge cylindrical depositories, thereby introducing important changes as regards visual perception.

BARRIO DE SANTA MARINA / PUERTA CASTILLO Conjunto escultrico de Eduardo Arroyo Hace ya varios aos que el Ayuntamiento de Len encarg al prestigioso artista Eduardo Arroyo una intervencin escultrica, en el entorno de Puerta Castillo, que ha provocado cierta polmica entre los vecinos, con los consiguientes retrasos en su ejecucin. El conjunto, segn el proyecto de Arroyo, estar compuesto por 60 moscas de acero, una de ellas de gran tamao en relacin al resto, y varios elementos mitolgicos, como un dios Eolo, un unicornio y un minotauro. Para el artista madrileo, vinculado por sus orgenes a la comarca leonesa de Laciana, ste es uno de los proyectos ms ambiciosos que ha emprendido en Espaa: la decoracin de una plaza. Una decoracin que dene como teatral, en la que se

mezclarn la piedra, el bronce y el hierro, y que modicar el paisaje urbano de esta zona del barrio de Santa Marina, muy prxima a la Colegiata de San Isidoro. SANTA MARINA NEIGHBOURHOOD / PUERTA CASTILLO Sculpture Composition by Eduardo Arroyo Many years ago the City Council commissioned the prestigious artist, Eduardo Arroyo a sculpture intervention, near Puerta Castillo, which caused some controversy among the neighbours, with the resulting delay in its execution. The composition, according to a work by Arroyo, will comprise 60 ies made of steel, one of them of bigger size than the rest, and several mythological elements, as Aeolus, a unicorn and a Minotaur. In the opinion of this artist from Madrid, linked to

the Leonese region of Laciana by his origins, this is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by him in Spain: the decoration of a square. A decoration he denes as theatrical, in which stone, bronze and iron will be mixed, and which will modify the urban landscape of this area of the neighbourhood of Santa Marina, very close to the Colegiata de San Isidoro.

ENTORNO DE LA PLAZA DE SANTA ANA Hlito Durruti El Ayuntamiento de Len aprob en su da una propuesta de la CGT para instalar un monumento a la memoria de Buenaventura Durruti (Len, 1896-Madrid, 1936) en el entorno de la Plaza de Santa Ana, lugar donde naci el lder anarquista a nales del siglo XIX. Diego Segura, reconocido artista ceut ancado en la localidad leonesa de Genicera, ha proyectado una escultura de dos metros, realizada a base de roca de la montaa leonesa. El artista quiere insuar el hlito de Durruti en la roca, vacindola y forrando sus paredes interiores con planchas de bronce dorado pulido. El corazn de la piedra estar iluminado, y una tulipa o or de bronce y un pistilo simbolizarn la rectitud y la rmeza de las gentes que, como Durruti, lucharon por un mundo mejor.
SURROUNDINGS OF SANTA ANA SQUARE Durrutis Breath

Len City Council approved of a new proposal from the Spanish workers confederation (CGT) to install a monument in memory of Buenaventura Durruti (Len, 1896-Madrid, 1936), in the surroundings of Santa Ana square, the place where this anarchist leader was born. Diego Segura, a renowned artist from Ceuta settled in Genicera (Len), has projected a 6.50-feet sculpture, made of rocks from Lens mountains. The artist wants to impress Durrutis breath on the rock, emptying it and covering its inside walls with gilded and polished bronze sheets. The heart of the stone will by illuminated, and a tulip or a bronze ower together with a pistil will symbolize the honesty and resoluteness of the people who, just as Durruti, strived for a better world.
