Bs Worksheets CD Glory Box by Portishead

Overview
Learners practice recognition and production of the 3 vowel sounds , u and u: Having been introduced to the target sound in 3 short phrases, they first classify 18 words (some of which are from the song) according to the vowel sound they contain.

They then listen to the song and circle the words in the table from the previous activity which are in the song. They then use those words to complete the lyrics. Finally, learners complete a number of incomplete sentences which use language from the songs lyrics with their own ideas and beliefs and then discuss their answers in small groups.

Procedure
1. Intro (5 mins) Elicit the following expressions?: Good luck Who won? New shoes

*Perhaps with questions such as What do you say to some who has an exam tomorrow? or what things do women typically buy to go to a wedding, for example.

Have learners say the expressions a few times chorally and individually. Model the phrases yourself the first time and use a students pronunciation (obviously choose one with good pronunciation) as subsequent model until most students can say the phrases more or less comprehensibly.

Draw 3 columns on the board and classify

the words from the expressions according to the 3 target vowel Luc k sounds. Introduce the phonemic Wo n symbols (explain that they are used in Goo d

u:

Who

New

Shoes dictionaries to show pronunciation)

and drill sounds. Then drill the words in the columns and the expressions

Exercise 1 Dictation/Classification Task (10-12 mins) Give out worksheet 1. You read out the 18 words in the order they are on the worksheet and the students, working individually, classify them according to the vowel sound they contain. Once you have read the words out once, learners compare answers in pairs. Clarify any differences of opinion. Drill some words from the columns.

Exercise 2: First listening task (10 mins) *Dont give out the lyrics yet! Explain that learners will hear the song they have to circle the words from the table that they hear. *Only play the song once at this stage! Learners then compare answers in pairs or small groups - its doesnt matter too much if they dont have all the right answers at this stage or if some of their answers are wrong!

Exercise 3: Second Listening Task (10-15mins) Give out worksheet 2. Explain that learners have to complete the lyrics with words they circled in the previous task. Play the song again (and a third time if necessary). Check answers in pairs. Discuss and song and lyrics as appropriate.

Exercise 4 (10-15 mins) Give out worksheet 3, Tell learners to complete the sentences with their own ideas and beliefs. Perhaps give one example of your own. Monitor and check grammar (particularly the verb forms after tired of and stop) and vocab. Put learners in 3 or 4s and have them compare and discuss their sentences. Monitor and note errors.
