The 27th edition of Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services details the latest standards of practice in blood banking and transfusion medicine. As in the past, a quality management system is the framework of the standards, with each of the 10 chapter headings representing one of the 10 Quality System Essentials. Significant changes: A new (previously interim) standard requires the use of FDA-approved or FDA-deemed-equivalent bacteria detection methods. new requirements ensure that users follow manufacturers instructions with certain apheresis equipment when said instructions are more stringent than standards. Standards for the preparation and issue of tissues and derivatives have been separated from those for blood and components, for clarity. Requirements for new product Cryoprecipitated AHF after thawing have been added to Reference Standard 5.1.8A, Requirements for Storage, Transport and Expiration. The phrase transfusion transmitted has been replaced with the more inclusive term transmissible for clarity.

The fifth edition of Standards for Cellular Therapy Product Services details the latest standards of practice for accredited cellular therapy facilities. Significant changes: new standard requires that informed consent documents be reviewed and approved by the medical director. new standard requires a plan for the eventual implementation of ISBT 128 labeling for cellular therapy products. Several revisions to infectious disease testing requirements including changes to requirements for autologous donor testing. Several standards requiring inspection and verification, particularly at the time of issue or distribution, have been revised to allow for the use of one individual and an electronic equivalent instead of requiring that two individuals verify labeling information.
The 10th edition of Standards for Relationship Testing Laboratories (RT Standards) features new and revised requirements in areas such as personnel responsibilities, first-time accreditation, the use of autosomal markers, testing of backup systems and corrective action. Also incorporated are certain elements of the new Quality System Essentials 2011 as applicable to supplier and customer issues, as well as the interim standards relating to accredited vs nonaccredited activities described in promotional materials. The Guidance for Standards for Relationship Testing Laboratories accompanies the RT Standards as a CD-ROM. In addition to detailed technical appendices, the Guidance contains practical recommendations on how to meet the requirements of the RT Standards.

The first edition of Standards for Molecular Testing for Red Cell, Platelet, and Neutrophil Antigens (MT Standards) contains requirements for facilities using molecular methods to predict ABO, Rh, and other blood group antigens on red cells, platelets and neutrophils, as well as quality system requirements, operational standards and a detailed list of inventory resources necessary for the identification of targeted nucleotides that encode red cell, platelet and granulocyte antigens. Organized according to the Quality System Essentials quality template, the MT Standards addresses operational aspects such as test methods, including DnA, restriction fragment length polymorphism testing, and sequence determination or single nucleotide polymorphism (SnP) analysis.
The fourth edition of Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration contains requirements that address perioperative collection and preparation of red cell and non-red-cell components. The fourth edition includes a table of perioperative component descriptions that promotes standardization of terminology. The Perioperative Standards also contains requirements addressing the use of new or novel methods and defines expiration times for a number of different perioperative products.

This guidance is intended to assist in the understanding and practical application of the 1st edition of the Standards for Molecular Testing for Red Cell, Platelet, and Neutrophil Antigens (MT Standards). Primarily, it contains guidance on the quality concepts that provide the framework for the MT Standards. It is also intended to serve as helpful advice or to provide examples of how to implement a specific standard, focusing on those issues that may be least familiar to members of the molecular testing community. In addition to the Quality System Essentials that organize the standards, DnA resources and targeted nucleotides for neutrophil antigens are addressed.
The various fields represented by these six different Standards are symbolic of AABBs continued effort to adapt to changing clinical and laboratory environments and to address the expanding needs of its membership. In 1957, AABB published the first edition of Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services. The Standards were instituted in 1958, and AABBs Accreditation Program came into existence. More than 50 years and 25 editions later, AABB continues to be a leader in standard setting and accreditation. AABBs Standards and Accreditation Programs have evolved over time but are still supported by the work of volunteers and continue to strive for improvement in the quality and safety of blood collection, processing, storage and transfusion activities, as well as in the areas of cellular therapy, perioperative activities, molecular testing, immunohematology and relationship testing.

Circular of Information for the Use of Cellular Therapy Products
This CT Circular includes thorough descriptions of the most commonly used minimally manipulated HCT/P products. Although the main focus of this publication is on HCT/Ps, there is also a short discussion on more than minimally manipulated products prepared under investigational new drug protocols. AABB coproduced this CT Circular with 13 other blood and cellular therapy organizations and two federal liaisons. Anemia in prospective blood donors may indicate an underlying disease, may result in an ineffective blood product and may cause harm to the recipient. Thus, the measurement of donor hemoglobin as a means of determining donor eligibility is of paramount importance. This Guideline identifies several of the methods currently in use for determining hemoglobin levels. The advantages, disadvantages, technical aspects and quality assurance considerations of each method are described so that collection personnel can choose a particular method that ensures protection of the donor and a safe and effective product for the recipient.
