Fall 2012

Learning from an Olympian

Erick Barrondo might not be a household name to you, but Erick is now a celebrity in his home country of Guatemala. Erick recently won Guatemalas first-ever Olympic medal with silver in the mens 20 kilometer race walk (thats 12.4 miles of speed walking!). His family enjoyed watching the race on their firstever television that Erick bought for them before he left for London. After the race, Erick commented: I hope that this medal inspires kids at home to put down guns and knives and pick up a pair of trainers instead. If they do that, I will be the happiest guy in the world. This successful Olympian could have used his moment in the spotlight to highlight his wonderful accomplishments, but he didnt. Instead, he shared his desire that a young generation of Guatemalans make a changeto find a purpose beyond war and violence. Without trying to over-spiritualize Erick, there are a few things we can learn from him. 1. Do what you were created to do. How has God especially gifted you? What training have you received? What do you enjoy doing? Ephesians 2:10 states, For we are...created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. This doing good works could be summed up in this little word: SERVE. Serve God, and serve others. At Aim Right, we have been blessed with a multitude of volunteers who have poured their lives into sharing hope and love with at-risk youth. Do all of them share the same gifts and abilities? Thankfullyno! Some are taskoriented, with strengths like organizing, planning, and staying on budget. Others

are apt to be more spontaneous and are a great asset in an environment where flexibility is a necessity. If you wonder how you might fit in in reaching out to youth, explore the service track below to find your niche. We always have room for oneor twenty more volunteers! 2. Care about the next generation. Psalm 78 gives this challenge: tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord..that they should set their hope on God and not forget the works of God. A simpleyet powerfulway you can care about the next generation is to PRAY for them. Will you engage with us in praying for the next generation by coming to one of our scheduled prayer walks?* A sidewalk view may give you fresh eyes to pray about change for the next generation. Similar to Ericks desire, you may find yourself praying, May these kids put down these bad things and start doing this instead!
*For specific times and locations of the prayer walks, see page 2.

PERCEPTIONS

Thank You, Thank You, Jesus.

When camper Richard Vazquez returned home from Teen Camp in Colorado, he decided to write a song. He granted us permission to share the words with you here. Its really a prayer of thankfulness to his Savior! Father in the heavens, how can I thank You for my life and Your blessings? When you came into my life You turned it around and pointed it to Your path. You made me feel forgiven for all of my sin. Jesus, thank You for saving my life. No words can explain what You did to save my life. You shed Your blood for me high upon the cross. Lord, I know Youre real cause You answered all my prayers and saved me from death. I'll always worship You, Lord, till my last breath. I give You my life since You gave me Yours, and I'll use all my strength to bow before You, Lord. (Chorus) Thank You, Thank You, Jesus, for saving me from Satan. Thank You, thank You, Jesus, for being the only true God. Thank You, thank You, Jesus, for saving my life.

Help replace me!

In June, our only 15-passenger van was stolen, wrecked, and totaled. To make it through our summer VBS and camp schedules, we relied on borrowed or rented vans. Our goal is to raise an additional $6,000-$8,000 to supplement the insurance settlement to be able to purchase a reliable van to use for many years to come. Will you consider giving towards this cause?

(Above) Many teen campers trusted Christ to heal their wounded hearts. One teen said, Being in this camp changed my heart and my life. Jesus, I want You to know Im grateful to You for holding my hand through my drugged past. You were always there. You never left my side, but I lost my faith in You when I thought You left my side, but one night in jail, I got my faith back when I cried out for You, and I was set free. I was scared to pray to You cause I put the blame on You, but You led me to a group of people that helped me through my fear, and ever since then I believe in You. I would like to thank You for Aim Right Ministries.
